[TIP] EE apps – Cash on Tap and Tap Wallet – NFC payments – Advice and installing on - Xperia SP Themes and Apps

Ignore this post if you’re not on EE (a UK network).
Though not widely advertised, Cash on Tap, (EE’s NFC payment app) does work on the Xperia SP (the EE website is ambiguous – in places it says the SP can use the service, but on the device compatibility web page the SP is not listed).
It’s a decent service and perhaps more reassuring than contactless payment cards because you top it up with how much you want, rather than it having direct access to your bank account/credit card balance. It can also be used as a virtual payment card – so if you’re ordering online from a website you’re unsure about and don’t want to give them your normal credit/debit card you can use the details on the virtual card. If it’s a dodgy website and they try and take more money, the most they can steal is the balance of your ‘tap wallet’.
More good news is that they give you £5 just for installing the app and a further £5 when you add money to the service – so yes, you get given £10 for doing next to nothing and who can argue with free money?
I bought my lunch using my phone yesterday, which whilst a bit geeky, did make me feel kind of cool (I know that in other parts of the world NFC payments are used a lot more, but it’s not common in the UK). I felt at the forefront of technology for once.
Anyway, what is evident is that for security purposes, to start using this service your device has to be authenticated by EE - you download a bridging app (cash on tap), then EE check your credentials (which can take two hours) and once this is done you are allowed to download the ‘tap wallet’ which is the app which actually allows you to make NFC payments.
Unfortunately part of this process involves validating the firmware of your phone and you simply won’t be allowed to install this service if you are using a custom rom.
However, if you install both parts on stock, set up your account etc. and make a CWM backup you can use Nandroid manager to restore the apps and data to a custom ROM (I guess this will work with Titanium too?) and the service will work perfectly, though I suspect if they update either app you will lose the service and have to do everything again.
EDIT: Also, you need an NFC enabled SIM from EE for this to work. Check your SIM card, if it has an N after the string of numbers it is the correct type, otherwise you'll have to get one from EE.

Sorry to bring up an old post, but do you (or anybody) know if this process would work to get it onto a different handset rather than just a different ROM?
I use this a lot but want to use it on my nexus5...

Traveling Advice

Hey Everyone,
I'm going to France/UK for a month in about 3 weeks
But I would still like to get in contact with my family here in the states. I was wondering if anyone knew the best way to get service while outside of the country.
Would it be cheaper to get a sim card there and plop it into my phone or call ATT and tell them I'm traveling and that I need service there.
Lastly, if I go the sim card route, do I need to do anything to be able to use the card or do I drop it in and it works?
Thanks again!
Firstly, congratulations and I hope you have an amazing time. Last summer I went to Greece, Italy, and France so what I did was turn off my data (just the toggle in settings) and used the wifi over there for apps that let you call or text others who have the same app. At&t also has a messaging plan where you get 100 texts for like ten dollars or so I think but you can't double up -_- for some reason. Don't buy any At&t overseas data plans, they will charge you an arm and a leg.
But any ways, if you know you are going to populated parts of the country where you'll get wifi, then you should be good with that to talk to friends/family here for a really good portion of the day. (many cafes and such offer free wifi but hotels, you'll have to pay but it's super minimal- equivalent to about three dollars on average for your stay there)
Again, wishing you the best of luck.
3 possible options outside of using ATT
first call att and see if they unlock your phone for you - if not use cellularunlock (~$25) to get the unlock code, once overseas, buy a local sim and use that
if wifi is available use that - first sign up for google voice then install grooveIP and log in with your google voice account - you can not make wifi based phone calls (caveat - not sure if groove ip enabled yet in Uk or france)
use Skype - sign up for thier very cheap monthly subscriptions, and use that when in wifi range

Thanks for the replies guys!
I think from the look of things I'll get my phone unlocked and just get a sim card there.
I'm going to hope that there is a ton of free wi fi so I can call the family back home but I also need service to keep in contact in towns while I'm there.
Also, will unlocking the phone affect anything? Because I'm currently rooted and running TheUnofficial.
Nope. Unlocking a phone lets you use carriers overseas. Has nothing to do with os.
-Once you go NOTE, you'd say 4 inches a Joke
-iOS = inspiring Outdated Software
Hey there,
Nowadays lots of things there, you can contact your family very easy and free services. There's lots of application on the phone, you can contact through Skype, WhatsApp, IMO and there is lots of apps are available. You can easily video call with these apps. You only need a good internet connection which you can easily find in the UK. Happy journey
Thanks!

[Q] HTC One Stolen: Assitance please!

Recently got the new HTC ONE through Telus and little over a couple days it has been stolen from me.
I'm wondering now if there is any way for me to track it on regular google account and facebook has been setup on it, but the phone does have a secure security code to unlock the screen.
Does the carrier have anyway of finding this if someone tries to stick in another SIM? Granted they are also a telus user or am I hooped on this one?
I'm assuming a person with the right know-how or buddy could likely access the boot load reset the thing and unlock it and use it, but i'm hoping this isn't the case and I can still track it via some other way?
Thanks,
V
HTC use to offer the ability to track your phone if it was powered on. Or you could remotely lock and/or wipe the device. This was through the HTC sense website. I don't know if they still offer this feature or not. If they don't I'd recommend calling your carriers support line and see what they can do.

I doubt anything's gonna come about this. Phones get lost or stolen every day and even with todays technology very few get found or returned. Also police have better things to do then track someone's lost phone. And I say lost better than stolen because how are you sure that the phone was stolen and not lost? Did you get held up or did the person physically took it off for you?
I would suggest getting insurance next time.

Short answer: No.
Android has no built-in phone tracking capability. This is something you need to have installed yourself on the phone, or something the manufacturer includes. HTC used to do this, but no longer offers the feature.
Report your device stolen to the carrier (you may also report it to the police, but they won't do anything), so that when someone uses it on the network, they won't be able to. Most carriers will not alert you that your device has been found or anything like that. They simply blacklist the IMEI and that's it. If you don't have insurance, then you are pretty much on your own.
Your carrier may offer their own location tracking capability that you can add to your account, and that may allow you to track the phone (if they haven't already wiped the phone and removed your SIM card). Check with your carrier.

What does blacklisting the IMEI do? Could the individual just unlock it with a internet bought code and jam in any sim card and make it work after the fact? Or by blacklisting it if someone brought it to TELUS would they then be able to seize it as a stolen/ lost phone?
Thanks for all your comments and help thus far, it is greatly appreciated.

Blacklisting an IMEI will not allow someone to use that device on the network. This is something that has only recently caught on in the United States. T-Mobile and AT&T now block IMEIs that have been reported stolen/missing, while Sprint and Verizon have been doing it for a while. When you put your SIM into a blocked phone that tries to run on a supported network, you'll get a message that says the phone cannot be used.
Of course, this depends on your carrier. You may want to ask what your carrier does with lost/stolen IMEIs, as they may have different policies.
get on computer>google play> download lookout security or plan B...this would only work if the device is turned on and has data connection...plan B should get the gps location and send the map to your email address..

works only with Android 2.1-2.3! But maybe a good one for these Version!
Did you try Android Device Manager to locate it? It's in the settings menu on the play store website.

For the future try an app called Cerberus anti theft, it's a really great app to have. It has a free week trial so you can try it out, after that it cost $2.99 euro which is a little under $5 in US, also it's a one time fee and not a subscription. Just go online and track your phone and do many other things.

Samsung Pay - Bell Canada S9 Plus

Hi All,
I just discovered that RBC have added the ability to use their debit/credit cards with Samsung Pay. I excitedly added my debit & credit card and successfully activated both of them. I can open Samsung Pay from swiping up from the home screen and select either of the payment methods. My problem is so far I have tried numerous different locations over the last few days and when I present the phone to the payment terminal it simply doesn't register. No errors at all just nothing. I tried removing the phone from the Otterbox Symetry case but it didn't make a difference. I also deleted the app and re installed it. Still no joy. My wife has an S8 Plus and her Samsung Pay works with no issues whatsoever even with a really cheap folio case.
I would love to hear from anyone that is using Samsung Pay on the S9 Plus in Canada, particularly with RBC cards. Not sure if I am doing something stupid but I'd love to get it working.
Regards
Richard
This is how it works for me in the UK
Open samsung pay, tap where it says credit/debit cards, tap on the card you want to use.
Now you have two options. If you are using fingerprint unlock then use it now and the app will display your payment card on a black background and the phone starts to vibrate and you have 30 seconds to make the payment.
If you are using pin, tap on the pin button and enter your pin number then same thing will happen.

Are you using your iris or fingerprint scanner to initiate the payment process? It's not as effortless as Android pay. It has the added redundancy.

I tried again last night with no luck,
I unlocked my phone, swiped up from the bottom of the home screen, selected my RBC debit card then used my fingerprint. This initiated the 30 second countdown. I placed the phone over the terminal exactly where the NFC receiver is both horizontally & vertically. It would not recognize the payment, no errors. I eventually had to use my actual debit card

Android 8.0 privacy and security

Hi all,
Im a still a bit green around the edges when it comes to dealing with android os.
I have 2 lgv30 (tmobile) and my goals are.....(this is what i need help with)
1. I want to run everything locally, no cloud, no sync, no backups, no services, nothing. I paid for these phones so i shouldnt have google or tmobile in my grille mining my personal data.
2. I dont care if google apps work or not....like i said im trying to get all my stuff on my phone working from my phone and not shared.
3. I have to use microsoft outlook and the home screen launcher microsoft makes is nice... Not intrusive like the google services stuff.
Im trying to clamp down on this privacy securitu stuff thats run amok with google... Copperhead OS is great and i would use it if my phone would work with it.... I dont login or sync any google accounts but i would really like to strip down and know how to achieve my goal with android 8.0.... The bloat, the privacy invasive crap, etc.... Looks like with 8.0 you can lockdown per app per permission....
Any thoughts or ideas?
Thanks

LOL. Do you even imagine why RIM and their BBOS vanished? And Meego too? Because Uncle Sam wants your data, not because Android was somewhat better than they or Win Mobile 6.5. With WinMobile 6.5 you could store all your data locally, but seems that now only option is either to disable all google apps on your phone or better get root and flash some Gapps-free ROM.
You may want to read such topics maybe you'll find there more helpfull advices

Let's hope you don't have a T-Mobile exclusive V30 then, because that one is unrootable, bootloader not unlockable, etc. (the only one out of all V30 that can be customized pretty extensively)
1. k, just flash e.g. lineageOS, RR, AEX, dot os, etc. and leave gapps away (only flash the ROM)
2. You want to minimize Google tracking ? Install AdAway as a basis with its 4 blocking lists to be added to your hosts file, then install Blokada - use the "Mother of All ..." (the XDA extensive blocking list), install firewalls (best opensource based) and block off internet access to apps. With "App Ops"/"Privacy Guard" you can fine-grained tweak which apps run in background, at boot, keep your device awake and other things (e.g. location permissions). There's others but that's it for now
3. See if you can get an app or functionality (via XPosed, etc.) that lets you see if there is more internet communication with Outlook & MS Home Screen Launcher than there should be and block it via firewall or add it to hosts file, the extensive blocking list on Blokada might be too much and prevent Outlook from functioning properly so you might need to go with a less aggressive option
Privacy/Security wise it's not only Google, it's Microsoft, Google, FB, Twitter, etc.
It's all companies together and a pretty wide surveillance net.
In any case use a Browser that supports adblocking, disabling of Javascript and additional features (thinking about tracking cookies, invisible image trackers, etc. etc.)
Yeah, there are more things you can tweak related to permissions with 8.0
The following might be interesting:

https://pjmedia.com/vodkapundit/ap-report-google-knows-where-you-are-even-if-you-disable-tracking/
So in that case we might need location spoofers or anything related (if those even work)
Well....?????
I do have the TMobile LG V30.
looks like im going to have to wait a couple months before it can be rooted???? From what im reading its still being worked on? Unfortuneatley i didnt have the option to go with the unlocked versions.

Won't ever be done. I'll be glad to be proven wrong, of course. I'm just stating probability. T-mobile H932 was released October 2017. This is now mid-August 2018.
1) RSA encryption on H932 is completely different from other North America variants.
2) Other phones are coming along which gets developers' attention. No one is really working on the H932 specifically, because of point #3...
3) There's no need since every V30/V30+/V30S on the planet -- EXCEPT for the T-mobile H932 has easy bootloader unlock, TWRP, root. Use one of those on T-mobile.

Why not? Somebody held a gun to your head? Lots of T-mobile users are using the unlocked versions on T-mobile. No one forced you to buy the H932 specifically.
The carrier unlocked US998 (or the H931, H933, VS996, AS998, LS998 CONVERTED to US998) runs just fine on T-mobile. Plus, the carrier unlocked V30S.
So, there's SEVEN different North America V30/V30+ variant choices for you to buy to run on T-mobile. Mint LS998 V30+ is $315 on eBay right now, and eBay often gives 10% to 20% flash sales to bring the price even lower. Lots of people in this forum bought for 20% off for Father's Day sale, including me.
I've been on AT&T since 2012 and I've NEVER owned an AT&T branded phone. I always buy carrier unlocked phones.
So are you saying i can install lineage os on my tmobile lg v30?
My company has a contract account with tmobile....similar to goverment accounts. Tmobile supplies the phones we have to use..They wont activate any phone except the ones they provide. However, phones can have custom roms and still be used.
I also have employees that have the need for two or more phones due to seperating phone from tethering needs and new bandwidth coming from tmobile. Tmobile provided ALL the phones at huge discounts, no money up front and low monthly payments.
Not everyone has money to throw around......And im guessing here....perhaps like you can? Maybe your the richest man in the world? It must be nice... If someone did hold a gun to my head at our time of purchase we would all be dead because we dont have trust funds like you might have? Its really wonderful you can purchase 2 lg v30 on ebay or amazon and drop 2k with no issues....my employees cant....

I'm saying you can NOT. H932 does not have the fastboot flash commands necessary to install TWRP and root, using the LG Oreo bootloader unlock expoit @TxanMoe found. The other North America variants can be "converted" to US998 for the necessary fastboot flash commands. For some after that, you can even convert back to original model if you wish.
H932 has different RSA encryption than the other North America variants so it's impossible.

Then you didn't read what I wrote. I suggest you read before replying. How does $252 per phone on eBay = $2,000? I'll post again since you didn't read. I'll even do the math for you:

$315 - 20% = $252.
Convert that to US998, root, use on T-mobile with custom ROM. Lots of people use them on T-mobile. It's called Bring Your Own Phone. T-mobile allows non-branded phones to be used on T-mobile -- example Google Pixel phones or ANY compatible phone.
If your company's contract prevents that, too bad. Personal accounts do not prevent that.
Can you buy a another V30 phone and put your company T-Mobile SIM card in? Then root?

How do I properly use Android Pay on Galaxy S9+?

Hello,
I'm confused how Android Pay is supposed to work on S9+ specifically in terms of unlocking phone. I expected if phone is unlocked already I just tap terminal and payment is processed but instead. I power on phone, tap terminal, Pay launches but asks to confirm unlock, at this point Terminal fails and Pay asks me to tap second time.
I'm from South Africa and Samsung Pay only started to work a few weeks ago. I installed the app and then there was an update. I was asked to decide which security option I wanted to use, iris/fingerprint or both. I decided on fingerprint. I have used it a couple of times. In my experience of using it, no issues.. On the lock screen or if the phone is unlocked, there is a small tab on the bottom of the phone. I just swipe up from the bottom and it launches Samsung Pay immediately. You will see your card and security option, in my case I use my finger on the fingerprint reader and it's active for +-30 seconds,(the phone "pulses/vibrates every couple of seconds) then hold against the card machine and when detected, the phone vibrates a bit longer and the card machine asks for pin depending on the bank etc and from there it's a normal transaction.
Yes, Samsung Pay is not an issue, question about Android Pay which works quite different from Samsung Pay.
Well I use it all the time everyday to pay and all I do is wait for the machine to ask for the card or contact less and at that point and unlock the phone put next to the reader and that's it payment done.

What happens if you phone is already unlocked when you powered it on? Does it ever prompt you second time to verify your Iris/Fingerprint?
Well to be fair there was a few times when waiting I was playing with the phone and she did activated it and all I did was put on top of it and did pay for it. Now there is the fact that to pay for things u do need to be fairly close to the NFC chip or u won't pay so don't think is any danger in people trying to get the phone to do payments plus u get the notification. With all of that said don't know if u go to settings u can choose to register finger every time u want to pay.
