[Q] What to use for backups - Xperia Tablet Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I read on Google Play that Sony had disabled Helium. Anyone know why?
I am looking for a backup and restore app that covers everything without the need to root the XZT. There is a built-in app that seems to have covered it but does it? I have just had to re-build my device and used the restore from the PC companion and it was awful. I've spent another day re-downloading and configuring settings and apps.
Is there an app that backs up and restores everything including the folders and icons on the home pages?
Thanks

Is there a reason why you don't want to root it? Afaik you wont void your warranty unless you unlock your bootloader.
Titanium backup never failed me.

Yep, When I rooted before, I lost SkyGo and this is important to me. As much as I would love to be rooted, this is one facility I don't want to sacrifice.
Rgds

TB works perfectly
the only issue i got earlier with my droid razr was for apps which i move to sd card.

All i can say is wrong section

Temp root * Sigh*

Well I finally decided that I'm going to unlock my phone sometime this week because of all these roms I'm missing out on, but i have 1 obstacle keeping me from doing that. From my understanding when u unlock u factory reset without a backup of anything. I was wondering if there is a form of temp root that still works after the ota so o can use titanium backup before a factory reset. I can care less about settings and all that carp, I just want to backup my apps and settings. If anyone has an idea feel free to respond please!

I had some of the same concerns when I recently unlocked and rooted my Rez. I don't thnk there is any way to temp. root since the OTA, however, you might look at MyBackUp or App Backup. Both are backup programs that work without being rooted. After root, MyBackUp bought back in about 90% of my programs. There were several I had to go back to the Market to get. My settings were not saved but I think that is my fault. In MyBackUp you can choose to save both apps and/or data. I had just saved apps.
Goodluck! It is well worth doing.

Confused, are you trying to temp root or perm root?
I think he means that he wants to perm root but since he has to do a factory reset nd doesn't wanna loose all his data from apps then perm root nd get his data back correct me if I'm wrong

I tried using mybackup pro but none of the app data would restore =(
I am trying to transfer my game data from a defective rezound to a new one but both are OTA updated.
Did i miss something? Are we sure mybackup pro can backup/restore app data on the rezound?

I have MyBackup Pro and you can backup apps and data. I haven't used it for that before so I can't speak to how it restores but it did a great job of restoring my phone and home settings.
I'm running it on a rooted phone so I don't know if that changes the options or not.
I was in exactly the same boat and mybackup worked for some but not all apps. I looked all over, but if you already got the OTA installed then you don't have other options. Sorry man. There is no temp root after OTA due to fixes against zerg root exploit.

If you have Root access it will backup all Data/Settings for All applications.
If you have no root access, it will backup integrated apps data/settings.
darn it, well thanks for the closure at least
Ya thanks guys but I guess I'll just wait a few months before unlocking. Might get s-off before u no . I'll for sure unlock after ics though

Best way to back up an unrooted phone?

I need to exchange my phone (shutting down randomly).
I really don't want to have to set everything up again. Any suggestions on the best way to back up an unrooted phone before I return it? Id prefer to NOT have to root, backup then unroot.
[edit] So far, I've moved all apps to the SD card, what else can I do?
Thanks!

There really is not an easy way..there are a number of apps you can use like astro for app back up, sms back up and restore and bookmarks back up apps
Mybackup seems ok. I'm just a noob though.

I use SUPER MANAGER which doesn't require root and it will back up all your apps and some settings (but move the apps jack to the device first). Then when you get the new device just restore all the apps. Some settings won't move across but at least he tedious reinstall will be easier.
Super Manager has many other great features BTW.

My Backup

I've restored my backups from the app 'My Backup', and all my apps are still there, but I thought it was supposed to save my apps settings too? I've lost save games, opera bookmarks aren't there, whatsapp conversation logs gone. The phone just installed these apps and games as though they'd never been used before. I've also had to redo certain other phone settings that I thought My Backup was meant to take care of. What's up with that? Isn't the idea of a backup app to get your phone to be exactly as it was before a reset, including exactly where you left off in any given app or game?

I think you need root for that app to restore app data and settings.

Yes you need root to back up game data and other settings
Damn. Well thanks guys, at least I know. So if I rooted now, do the backups I currently have saved contain my settings, ie, can I still get my settings back, or would the phone have to be have been rooted before the backups were created?

I believe you'd have needed root privileges prior to the backup, to read from the /data partition.

For apps? No. Kies wouldn't back up app data/settings anyways. Even if you DID have root.

Ah well, such is life. Still, I noticed my memo app was empty, something else My Backup didn't do. Fortunately kies just restored all my memos. Not that I'd generally trust kies for backing up other things, it's so unreliable.

Indeed. I tried using Kies for various things (including updates) for about 2 weeks, but generally found it useless.

Best method of backup and finding lost phone?

I am using Samsung Dive, I just tried it and it found my phone, though it needed wifi. I like it, it of course works and I'd be happy to stick with it, but am just curious if there are any potentially better options? I'm hoping for something that would work with just a GPS signal, if that's possible. Happy to stick with Dive, though.
Also, for backup, I'm using my Samsung account and daily backup. I'm guessing this is enough, is there anything again more effective?
Please note I am using stock and have no interest in rooting. Thanks for any help!

Cerberus is by far the best anti theft app out there.
Find it here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lsdroid.cerberus
Afaik, Dive also has GPS tracking.
Samsung backup only does your settings. I'm sure you have already synced up contacts and are saving new contacts in your google account, so that's taken care of.
The only remaining thing is your apps and you'll have to be rooted for that I'm afraid, either to do a Nandroid or Titanium backup.

I use SMS backup/restore for SMS, very simple.
If you get Google + or dropbox you can instantly upload photos you take.

I use Avast! Mobile for antivirus and theft protection. Does everything Cerebus does, plus antivirus, all for free.
If you are rooted, nothing beats Titanium backup. With a Dropbox or Box or Google Drive account, it will back up your files to the cloud.
Anyone else use Android Lost? Seems good, but hard to say until you really need it.

Thanks, just installed Cerberus, however the Device Admin rights seems quite scary. I'm guessing without that enabled the app can't really do its job?
So when you say Samsung backup only does my settings, what do you mean? The settings of the phone itself? (Display, sound, etc.).
Yes I have Google account syncing my contacts, calendar, etc.
For apps it doesn't seem a big deal, I'll just keep screenshots of my downloaded list if I had to wipe and reinstall. Particularly as I will not be rooting.

Yup, I use Dropbox and have a task in Astrid reminding me to upload all photos every couple days in case I forget
I just tried ultimate backup and backed up all my downloaded apps to the sd card, it seems to have worked? Is it a bs app or have I just backed everything up without root?
There is an option in dropbox to upload photos as soon as they are taken. No need to remind yourself
When I root i will need to try titanium.

Admin rights are only required for the app to become uninstallable. Everything else works without it.

titanium backup all the way. its the best backup solution so long as you are rooted. you dont have to be unlocked to use it, just rooted.
If you are unlocked id suggest a nandroid backup.
hope this helps

On JB, App Backup ( which also supposedly backs up app data as well ) is a factory installed program. Since you agree to the Asus bound EULA upon starting it up, im guessing its an ASUS app too

Well, If you can unlock your bootloader, Id suggest TWRP to create entire dumps of your current setup. If im not mistaken, titanium can pull the data from cwm / twrp dumps and restore pretty much everything. If you need a hand with unlocking and installing TWRP, you can pm me and ill walk you through it. Its not terribly difficult although you will need a computer nearby.

No problem My understanding is that ASUS , while a pain in the A$$ with warranty issues, will still take care of hardware ones with an unlocked / modded tf201. They just wont cover it if you brick it yourself.

I use Apex Launcher which is damn close to the stock launcher. It has a backup settings / desktop content setting built in. Im not sure but check to see if there is an entry in the app backup program for "Launcher2". If so, you are good to go as thats the program name for the OEM launcher

No, it doesn't take a backup of your home screen.
It does a pretty good job on backing apps and data, but you'll need to "rebuild" your home screen.

no it doesnt, it only backs up apps and app date (some games wont work - i found this the hard way).
best thing to save home screen layouts is just take a screen shot and re-do.

i wouldnt rely on this from Asus, ive seen people with things which are clearly hardware issues and they wont fix or they have really had to fight for it. basically if you unlock id take it as asus wont support you, anything on top of that is a bonus. ive insured mine.
As has been said, no the ASUS app doesnt backup home screen layouts. My cell phone camera however does.
I just went through this 3 days ago when exchange stopped synching and all the removing and re-adding of the account did not help.
All my apps except ironically the stock browser didnt have favorites I had set and bad piggies was at square one.
It also didnt backup my VPN settings, pictures/videos, screen timeouts and most basic OS settings (weather loc, temp in F etc..). The cam stuff I copied off via USB sync.
Basically after the restore I got my apps back, but no icons. I then used the pics I took with my cell phone to redo the homescreen. Then I set up email, VPN, basic OS settings. Had to log in to many of the apps that were restored. Chrome saved bookmarks so I loaded those and copied the URL to ASUS browser to restore them.
so in short a very manual job one way or another. But seriously lads thanks for the tips... been considering RAM of my tab the past few days , and have tons of custom settings and apps that I'd like to keep. Kinda sad that no auto solution has poped up.

Without root you cant get to those settings to restore and in a few cases read them.
Suggestions on how to save vpn settings?
