Step by step Instructions! RETURN TO STOCK FROM HBOOT 2.28 - HTC Rezound

I just spent 4 hours doing this to my own phone. YMMV. I thought I would share the step by step instructions that I spent the last few hours trying to figure out. This will also work to get to S-Off from HBOOT 2.28 (which was my goal, but also to give instructions to S-ON easily as well for returning for warranty, etc).
This assumes you already know how to load a rom, and are comfortable with the adb and fastboot commands (since you are here wanting to return to stock). This also assumes you have a booting rom, and/or access to side load a rom onto the sd card, and have access to recovery still.
CRITICAL: DO NOT DO THE S-ON PROCEDURE AT THE END UNTIL YOU CAN BOOT THE STOCK RUU!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2260154&highlight=stock+ota
Download and copy ota file from the link above to root of sd card
flash stock ota from recovery
Extract the boot.img from the ota.zip using any program other than windows (winzip, winrar). Flash the boot.img: fastboot flash boot boot.img
If you can boot into the ota stock rom, proceed to the S-Off section.
flash mainver.zip if you get errors about mainver (http://androidforums.com/rezound-al...ndly-root-guide-start-finish.html#post3997776)
S-Off (http://unlimited.io/juopunutbear.htm)
-> Windows files: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=40950251#post40950251
-> Run the controlbear.exe as administrator!
Load ruu (605.2)... a simple search should find lots of sources. (load as PH98IMG.zip on root of internal storage; reboot to hboot by shutting down or battery pull, then hold vol down + power, to load stock ruu - TAKES A LONG TIME!)
Once successfully booting to the RUU, then go ahead and S-ON:
S-on

*************DO NOT S-ON UNTIL RUU IS LOADED AND CONFIRMED BOOTING!!!!**************
Good luck! As usual, I take no responsibility for any problems. I literally just did this to my phone. I was getting tired of the reboots so I figured I would start from scratch...and s-off and I was on 2.28

Great work and links. I personally thank you for your time and effort into doing this for all users as developers can be busy in all aspects. Be it building, work or family I'm sure very many will appreciate this besides myself.

I s-off on infection, an AOSP ROM. I do not suggest it if you are just S-Off and nothing else, but in the case of you planning to RUU, it works just fine.

Yeah I figured the s-off people were just being overly cautious... but I personally would recommend using the know working 100% method... there are a lot of variables that could affect it with other mods I'm sure. Including Infection (which I use and love!)

Well good to know for those in a pinch thanks for sharing!

Ugh, I had the 4.3 JB flashed on my Rezound.
I now have to return the phone for my phone is being replaced.
I was having tons of issues trying to get stock rom to install until I found this one because I was getting an HBOOT older error.
I was able to successfully install this ROM and flashed boot.img
I cannot get it for the life of me to boot though, it boots to the HTC green and then basically just stays there OR it keeps booting into HBOOT.
I had it RELOCKED before loading the STOCK rom from this post, had to unlock again to flash boot.img
Thanks hopefully for any help.

To remove the tampered tag and have it say "locked" instead of "relocked" you must S-off.
I don't know why you couldn't boot after flashing the ota.zip from recovery and flashing boot img from hboot as it should boot up.
To use most fastboot commands, you need to be unlocked. The command is "fastboot flash boot boot.img" be sure to have that boot part in there. "Fastboot flash boot.img" will just not work. If you forget the "flash" part, it will just temporarily boot that boot.img once.

Flashing RUU returns to out-of-the-box stock?

I'm struggling with all the terminology and methods with flashing. Basically I just wanted root, so I read several different guides and got a rooted status and managed to install the Amon Ra recovery. However my bootloader (also called HBOOT - is that correct?) shows tampered / unlocked now. Basically, I want to flash back to the most current build and try again.
Would the link on the Android Police forums to download RUU 4.03.605.2 be latest Verizon build as if it were fresh out of the box?
I checked on the wiki, but didn't see anything for the Rezound there.
Also, to use this utility, I relock my bootloader using HTCDev and then move this zipped file to my sd card and reboot to the bootloader either using adb or the power + volume down, correct? It will see the zip file and begin flashing or do I run an executable from my PC with the phone connected? I'm not S-Off because I figured that is way above my head at this point.
I appreciate any help anyone can offer.
The tampered just means you have a custom recovery like Amon Ra installed.

If I want to load that RUU, do I have to relock my bootloader? Will I be able to load the file from the Android Police forum without being S-OFF since I've rooted and loaded a recovery?

Having S-OFF negates the need to relock your bootloader.
You should be able to flash the "RUU" zip file with your phone in its current condition.
If you do some research in this section in the S-OFF threads, you'll get some good info about not re locking after s-off.
Re-locking is only necessary if you don't have s-off.

to reinstall the RUU, first make sure you have fastboot on your PC and your phone is in the fastboot menu of the bootloader and connected to your PC. It should say "fastboot USB". (If you don't have the HTC drivers installed, download HTC Sync 3.0 and that should install it. I haven't gotten it to work on Windows 8 so if you use Windows 8 use these drivers)
Open a command prompt, change the directory to where your fastboot.exe is (example: cd c:\fastboot_directory). Type in 'fastboot oem lock'. Your phone will restart, then boot up. Turn it off, reboot to the bootloader and make sure it says *RELOCKED* on the top. Then, go back to fastboot and in your cmd window, type in 'fastboot oem rebootRUU'. Your phone will reboot and show a black screen with a grey HTC logo. Copy the RUU (doesn't matter if it's named PH98IMG.zip or something else) into the same folder as fastboot.exe and type in 'fastboot flash zip ruu_zip_name.zip' (obviously replacing ruu_zip_name.zip with the zip's actual name). The terminal will start sending the zip and details will be displayed on your computer screen. Your phone will also have a progress bar. Once the terminal on your computer says it's finished, you can reboot your phone.
I am currently S-On, unlocked, running Newts One XXX with the Global OTA (4.03.605) Sense 4 Kernel. I would now like to get the 4.03.605.2 firmware installed. Would the procedure described above work for my situation or is there another method I can use.
My next leap is to go S-off but for now I would just like to get the firmware updated before reflashing Newts.
Thanks in advance.
Yes, you can use the above method fine. However, going S-Off is very easy. It seems like a daunting task, but if you read the directions thoroughly it is very easy. I used the .5 version of Juopunutbear and it worked without a hitch. You are already unlocked and rooted, so if you S-Off, you won't have to do it all over again. From there you can flash the RUU, flash a FLASHABLE version of AR 3.15, then reflash any rom that you want. You will only get the benefit from global with roms that are built aroung the .2 base, but you will get updated radios. I haven't honestly noticed much of a difference with the new radios though.

Flash stock recovery here's a link http://www.mediafire.com/?wb21d2gdurui2c6 then lock bootloader. (Fastboot OEM lock)
After locking bootloader(cuz your s-on) rename the ruu you downloaded from android police To PH98IMG put on your sd return sd phone boot into bootloader run update, if it stops and powers off mid update remove battery and start it again, It flashed the hboot first then you gotta go back In And finish the update.

Just to clarify: when you reboot using "adb reboot" or power + volume down, are you booting into the bootloader or hboot? I've read the guides but still a little confused there.
Also, what does the stock recovery do versus something like Amon Ra? Does the stock recovery allow for creating backups and what-not? Sorry to be a total noob here. I can bake cookies or something for you all for your help, hehe.

The bootloader is the hboot. You power on holding vol down to get there.
The stock recovery does not allow you to create backups, or do much at all I'm pretty sure. That is why we have custom ones.

Sorry that you never got an answer to this. Yes, you should flash both recovery (stock) and the RUU as PH98IMG zip files. Wait to start this process until you have a pc/sd card reader available. Trying this without those basic tools is going to make this a frustrating process for you.

Update your twrp to 2.3.3.0 or if you want to return to stock you have to relock your bootloader
Sent from my PoS MoPho
TWRP won't take the update for whatever reason, and I can't get fastboot to work over this machine, so I'm thinking about running linux to get into the phone a little easier (hopefully.) I either have to wait til I can use my roommates machine, or start installing a dual boot
Have you tried goomanager to update twrp?
Yea, it downloads the file, gives a message stating it has been installed, then it does nothing. No reboot. when I manually reboot into recovery, it still sits at previous version.
Do you have adb setup on your PC? Also do you have the correct drivers installed ?

Ok, so finally got my fastboot to work

Worked. Awesome...now it's stuck in a bootloader loop. Won't let me into recovery, but I can still get to fastboot. I can't get to recovery, factory reset, etc. just hboot and fastboot.
screen shows tampered relocked and security warning.
Any ideas? I can get it to flash the PJ75IMG.zip but it says main version is older! or something to that effect and it fails. Any ideas?
UPDATE: Got it unlocked again and it booted back into OS.

Well since you are s-on you can't flash PJ75IMG files from bootloader if you want to update your phone to the latest OTA you have to relock your bootloader and reflash the stock recovery and take the OTA then unlock and flash twrp again.

How to "un-Dumlock" and get back to stock?

Need to get back to stock from twrp 2.5 w dumlock. Long story short, I was given a Rezound last year by a friend then I upgraded to Galaxy S4 and now my friend's mom needs the Rezound bc her phone is acting up. I need to get back to stock ASAP but I think Dumlock has thrown me for a loop when trying to fastboot oem lock before I run RUU.exe. I tried the restore recovery and restore boot in TWRP but when I moved my SD card from the rezound to my S4 I wiped all the data. Found on androidfiles.org/ruu/?developer=Vigor or any of the other ones it fails. Fortunately I have not bricked the phone yet but I am running out of options since android police site has one but says not to use it : This will not work if you used the HTC Bootloader unlock tool. After you rename it place it on the root directory of the SD card. Then power phone off. Then press volume down + power so it boots into bootloader. There it should ask if you want to update. Tell it yes. It won't brick you as its the same s/w you seem to be on. Worst case it won't flash.

Remember to flash a ph98img zip RUU, the bootloader must be relocked and internal storage will also be completely wiped. Backup the contents in recovery using usb mass storage mounts.

Sounds like all that needs done is a factory reset(wipe caches+data) and wipe system. Re-flash a Sense rom and fastboot flash the matching boot.img. Try my rom Viral OTA, just the data/system wipes prior to flashing and it willk get you back up to 100%. Rememer to reboot to bootloader if using TWRP.

Problem is, I don't have a copy of the recovery.img from the current OTA rom. Can anybody link me to it. Thanks

If you extract the firmware.zip, there is the recovery.img which you can either put into a custom ph98img.zip and run in hboot or flash it from your computer using adb stuff. I recently had to restore my Rez back to stock as it is getting returned to Verizon for a replacement. I used the ph98img route to reinstall recovery after unrooting. I also then had to S-on the phone so I had to make sure it was bone stock so the S-on didn't brick it.
ETA: I'm not sure if that full OTApkg.zip will be enough to get you back to stock but what I had done in the past was to flash this stock rooted rom with Amonra 3.16 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=40941755&postcount=1 ( I was already on 4.05.605.14), do the full unroot option using the supersu app that was already there, and then flash the stock recovery and I was back to fully stock.

Any chance your phone was S-off?

Here is a post with the full OTApkg.zip for 4.05.605.14:

If you extract the firmware.zip, there is the recovery.img which you can either put into a custom ph98img.zip and run in hboot or flash it from your computer using adb stuff. Thanks... I am S-ON but that should really be all I need... I don't really need to go 100% pure stock, but if I can get it close that will work. Replacing the recovery image and leaving it S-ON, then flash the Stock OTA Rooted ROM from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2260154 and I think I will be close enough to sell it. If someone wants it with a custom ROM I can just leave TWRP and Infection, or whatever ROM they want, but I just need a quick option to return to "stock" if the buyer wants.

You may want to flash the rooted stock before replacing the recovery back to stock. I don't know if the stock recovery will allow it...

The beauty of being unlocked is it doesn't matter... All I need to do is go into fastboot and use "fastboot boot recovery.img" for TWRP and I can flash anything, irregardless of what the installed recovery allows. But thanks for the warning, this is probably what I would do anyway.
Doh!, I completely forgot about that way... Yup, that would work as well
I'm trying to give this phone to my buddy. Haven't used it since I got the S4, and he is still using a Dinc. I tried what was listed here, but it's only made things worse. I was on Stock 4.03.605 (leaked Global RUU) unlocked, rooted, s-on. I tried updating the firmware with the OTAzip. I made the PH98IMG.zip, and ran it through the bootloader. It only updated Hboot from 2.7 to 2.8. It did NOT give me 4.05.605 like I was looking for. I tried to run the Global Stock rom but got stuck in a white HTC screen. The only thing I can make work right now is a viperrom, but wifi will not turn on. I was hoping to give this to him as close to stock, but without wifi, it's not going to be very useful.
Currently I have it locked s-on with stock recovery, but I can unlock and put amon ra back on it. I use a mac so commands are a bit different for me, but I know the basics and what to on the mac (mostly). Any help would be appreciated. I tried to run the leaked global RUU again to reset it, but because the Hboot updated, it won't run it. I can't find an RUU for 4.05.605

My circumstance was very specific, this thread was not really intended to be a guide to take any version of software to another, I already had the firmware (HBoot & radios) for 4.5.605.14, just needed a few pieces to get back to "stockish"... There are other ways to return to stock for different software versions and this thread doesn't address any of those.
The OTApkg.zip is only for going from 3.14.605.13 to 4.5.605.14, no other combinations of versions will work properly. I am surprised that HBoot updated... what radios are you on now? If the radios updated then you might be OK, you can just unlock, then fastboot boot recovery.img of TWRP and flash in the stock/rooted 4.5.605.14 ROM (NOT an RUU, but just the ROM), otherwise you could be in a situation where you need to S-OFF and flash radios and tweak from there. If your HBoot updated then the leaked RUU won't work either, you could be in a tight spot.
BTW, the reason Viper won't work is you likely have a kernel mismatch, to install a ROM on an S-ON Rezound you need to flash the boot.img separately, that is where the kernel is, but that also requires you to be unlocked by HTCdev.

Damn....I have tried to flash the kernel (boot.img) through the fastboot command, but it never works right and leaves me stuck with a white HTC screen. Again, if it's bricked, it's not the end of the world for me as I upgraded to the S4, but my buddy was looking forward to 4g.
Basebands are 2.23.10.0123r, and 2.23.10.0124r
Well I think you're in luck, you have the firmware for the latest software installed... hboot and radios match for 4.5.605.14, all you need now is to unlock and flash a correct ROM! Working so I can't grab link right now, just get unlocked via HTCdev and post when that's done... all isn't list yet!

If you wish..
Actually installing a custom recovery is not required as long as you can fastboot boot the recovery image.
Did you want to return to mostly stock, or did you want to run a custom ROM like Infection Or something else?

I was looking for stock. 4.05.605 is ideal so he can play with it if he wishes. I don't want to have to field questions once its his. I don't mind helping him, but I don't want to cause him issues he's not looking for.
I have the image downloaded. How do I fastboot boot the recovery? Just ./fastboot boot recovery.img (as i have renamed the img as recovery.img)
Use this one
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2260154
[ROM] OTA-Global-Stock-4.05.605.14 710RD-Rooted 5/1/13
Flash ROM, extract boot.img and flash then should be goof to go.

I tried this earlier, but I get the white HTC screen lockup. When you say extract boot.img, you mean unzip the download, pull out the boot.img and put it in my android folder to fastboot flash correct? The command I use is ./fastboot flash boot boot.img. It appears everything works, but it never boots. Just gets stuck in the white screen.
I'm downloading it now, should be about 14 more minutes. I will try it all again, and see what happens. Fingers crossed. let me know if my commands are wrong or I'm missing anything. the ./ is needed for mac.
If you load TWRP via Fastboot boot it will flash boot.img for you, if you load if from hboot you have to flash manually.
Before flashing ROM, download and flash the CleanWipe x5 script found in a thread on the development forum.

That works, just requires extra steps. I don't flash recovery anymore, you can go into fastboot on the phone, then execute fastboot boot recovery.img from PC, this gives an unlocked HTC phone temporary S-OFF saving steps of flashing boot.img seperately and avoiding the dreaded Tampered flag (if it hasn't been set).
Lots of ways to skin a cat I guess.

I have the tampered flag. But I don't care about that. I'm long past warranty anyway. But when I use the command ./fastboot boot recovery.img it says cannot load "recovery.img"

You need to extract the recovery.img file from the TWRP zip and put it in the fastboot directory.
