[Q] Ready to root, but...... - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm in a quandry. I've had my Samsung Droid Charge for 2 years and while I qualify for an upgrade, I thought to myself it's time to root and see what this thing can do (and hopefully get some extended life out of it).
So I read thru a lot of root threads and how-to's, and was about ready to start setting up, went to connect my phone to my computer with the USB cable that came with the phone (which I have also used for 2 yrs) and lo and behold, there's no connection to the computer. Computer recognizes something trying to connect via USB, but notification on the computer that pops up says "USB Device Not Recognized." Now, when I used to connect to any computer, a screen on my phone would come on asking if I wanted to connect the phone as a mass storage device or media player. That screen doesn't come up any more when I plug in the USB. The phone beeps as if it was connecting but then just indicates that it is charging. I've never had any issues with this before.
I've gone thru the rigamorole of trying different USB ports, different computers, different USB cables. Nothing doing on any of those. Tried setting the phone on "ask on connection" and "mass storage" on different computers. Nothing there either. Tried with USB debugging on and off on the phone. No dice. I have even tried a couple of complete hard resets of the phone, and still will not connect to any computer. Based on some info from other forums I even tried downloading some Samsung USB drivers to my computer (which I never had before and had no problem connecting without), and they don't even seem to install properly. message I get when the install finishes says "Device driver was not successfully installed" and then just shows a list of my printer drivers????? My printers work fine - don't know what the hell that Samsung's Mobile Phone driver has to do with our HP printer.
Spent 45 useless minutes at the Verizon store yesterday only to have their "tech" guy give me the toll free number to Verizon and tell me it was their tech support number. Spent another hour on the phone when i eventually got to a tech support person only to be eventually told that I'm eligble for an upgrade.
Anyone have any ideas for me at this point? Frustrated by having spent waaaaaaay too much time on this already. I'd really like to go root, but I don't see how unless I can determine how to get this thing to connect to a computer again.

[Q] HELP - Why is it saying "USB Device Not Recognized" for WMDC?

So, I just got a HTC HD2 and am trying to connect it to the PC. By the way, did the TMOUSA HD2 ever come with a cd?
I have a vista and tried to download the Activesync 4.5 but it won't allow as I am suppose to download Windows Mobile Device Center. So, I download WMDC and installed it. I plug in the phone and all I get is "USB Device Not Recognized" . PC doesn't detect it.
I have searched everywhere and tried everything but can't seem to get it going. I haven't anything solid to get it to work.
I tried:
-reinstalling the WMDC
-check and uncheck "Enable faster data sync"
Anybody have any idea? TIA
Is the phone charging LED lighting up when connected?
Have you tried another USB cable and/or another computer?
Then you could boot the phone up in Bootloader Mode. It will say 'serial' at the bottom of the screen. Then plug in the USB cable. The 'serial' should change to 'USB'. Then this might indicate that your computer is viewing the device as a unknown device. This device can be removed and your phone, in normal mode, replugged in.
This may not help, but it's worth a try. Vista has a known issue where it just stops recognising USB devices, even basic ones. Plug your phone in via USB and then restart the computer. When it comes back on it may recognise the phone. If this works then it will be okay for a while at least, but you may have to do this again every now and then.
Vista's basically a bug-ridden bag of gash. If you can, upgrade to Windows 7.
Hope this helps mate.

I tried with a laptop with vista (WMDC) and a laptop with xp (activesync 4.5). The led charging light is on, so it is charging but for some reason device not recognized.
I tried the bootloader (not sure what that does) and it says serial and then I plugged in the usb and it still says serial.
Still not working

I think I tried that already but I'll give it a shot again. At this point, I'll do anything lol. I was so stoked in putting android in this too
does any one think a hard reset might help?
It sounds as though the USB controller in the phone is damaged. I had this problem with my HTC Diamond, and searched for ages trying to find a solution. I manged to flash it with a couple of times with different ROMs (from the internal memory via WiFi) - this did not solve the problem.
I am sure that a power surge from a car charger was the cause of the fault.

it couldn't hurt. i would - see what happens.
try checking cabling first or change the cable
Same problem
I am having the exact same problem. My phone can charge on the computer but I cant sync of even access it via the "Disk Drive" setting. I have tried both AcrtiveSync and the Disk Drive option, unchecking fast data synchronization, reseting the phone, and reinstalling WMDC. I have Windows 7 with the latest updates. I have also tried connecting it to two other Win7 machine with identical "device not recognized" results. The phone and cable and practically brand new. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm at my wits end with this phone and it has been beyond frustrating.
Dom
Try another pc... buddy wid wmdc in it... go for win 7
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
I am having same problems have tried on a vista pc, my mac and mac running parallels, nothing works. Reckon it is as fred_up says, damaged usb controller which means no NAND Android for me.
Been having similar problems, but seems to have been less likely to occur if I click "Safely remove hardware" in Vista or W7, and remove the device - yes even Activesync (doesn't seem to be available in XP)

did anybody find a soulution?
hi
did anybody get solution for this? i m having the same problem.
phone doesnt sync with wmdc, nor connect as disk, only charges itself.
message appears "usb device not recognised"
i have done everything, changed cables, pcs, re installed wmdc, even flashed new roms using micro sd....nothing happened.
is this a hardware issue? why can it be charged but not synchronised?
pls help anybody.
Try another Cable. In my case, changing the cable works. Now i m using my HD mini cable with HD2 and it is working well.

thanks,
but i have already tried all that.
today i called a phone repair shop and they told me that
this could be due to two reasons.
1. usb port problem.-in which case it is replaceable for about 15 usd.
2. problem with an IC (?) of the circuit (guess the motherboard) - in which case
it is either not repairable or very expensive.
i ll keep posting as i go and visit the shop.
if there's another solution pls share here.
Some possible solutions to non-USB
Having come here via a search, I'll resurrect the thread with a brief comment. I'm having the same problem, haven't tried them yet but found several promising suggestions:

solution...
oops...had forgotten all about this thread, until today till i received the notice about new reply.
thanks for resurrecting the thread.
actually i went to that phone repair shop i mentioned earlier and they fixed it by replacing the usb port. still it didnt work with win 7 laptops. but was fine with xp laptops. dont know why...anyway i have said good bye to my hd2 long ago & using android now
guess lots of people are.
good luck to you all.

Fascinate: Computer will not recognize phone, but phone will still charge

Ok.
So at some point I soft bricked my phone and I got the Phone -- ! -- Computer screen.
Managed to get it back into download mode, and then unbricked it by getting it flashed to EB01 as instructed in this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1026746
So now I have EB01, which is working, however there is a new problem.
When I try to plug the phone into a computer, it is not recognized (Says the device has malfunctioned).
I have tried 3 different computers. I made sure I used the cable that came with the phone.
I brought it into the Verizon store, and they were unable to get any of their computers to recognize the phone either (we tried a few other cables there as well)
This is both in download mode and within the OS itself.
They told me to try downloading Vcast however that didn't work either.
So now I'm wondering if there is something I can do to get it to recognize it properly again.
Has anyone run into this situation before and managed to fix it?
I did twice have the phone plugged in via usb to my car, and walked out the car (was talking on the phone), and the USB yanked out, so that could have potentially damaged it (though it still charges, so I don't know)
Yanking it out could have very well done it. Only thing I would suggest is reformatting the drivers and attempting again this time leaving it plugged in and rebooting the computer. If that doesn't work, replacement time.
Do you have "usb debugging" turned on?
Did you activate the connection from the phone after connecting to computer? (mine shows a green screen with a button to activate the connection for mass storage)
beyond that... idk.
redownload the samsung drivers
based on the fact that so many PC's have been unable to connect and the info on yanking the USB charger in the car (I think we have all likely done that - though for me it has happened at work with the laptop<->network cable...) you may have damaged the plug/receptor (not sure what would be proper...).
I would do a visual inspection for kicks, though I am sure there could be damage you cannot see.
I believe that these USB connections are a minimum of 4 conductors (some devices are more proprietary and use more pins to ensure you are using an official cable so they can get you to buy more of their stuff - though some of those pins are not actually wired through the cable, but rather short to each other...). If you damaged only one, that could likely be the reason that you can get a charge but no data comm - and since it seems likely that one of the two data pins would be tx and the other rx, then I could see why teh PC would report the device had malfunctioned...
I am guessing here - logic, please don't fail me...

[Q] usb mounting problems.

About 3 months ago I started noticing the problem. Sometimes windows would recognize the phone, sometimes it wouldn't. When it did, my phone would give me the mount sd card option, and show the usb icon. When it didn't work, it would show nothing. My computer would beep and say the device is not recognized. I would then unplug and try again. After a while it would work.
Then one day, I unplugged the device and have not been able to get it to mount since. I plug the device in, computer beeps and tells me unrecognized device. And there is no change displayed from the phone. No usb connected icon, no mount sd. BUT, it does still charge, the now battery icon changes to the charging icon.
This hasn't been a problem because I can get on LAN over wifi and do what ever I needed to do wireless(AWESOME!) But...alas..tmobile SUCKS. And I'm thinking about switching. Sprint will credit me 130.00 to cover the ETF..HAHAHA. But if I'm going to get as much as I can for this phone on ebay, I need to figure out whats causing this problem.
I have tried 3 computers(all available usb ports) and 3 cables. One of which was brand new.
I am currently running Simply Honey 5. And read online that I need different usb drivers for the newer version of Android. I have found and downloaded these drivers but cannot get them to install. Windows 7 tells me that the current drivers for 'unknown device' are current and up to date when I try to point to the newer drivers.
What should my next step be? Is there a chance the port on my phone went bad? Maybe a pin needs to be pushed up a little?
thanks in advance
Nick

Probably a bad usb connector on your phone. What rom are you currently on?
I was fearing this. Its all stock, not even rooted.
IF i have to get a new usb port, do i have to do any soldering?
When I had this problem I downloaded multiple different drivers and eventually found ones that worked . Try Google searching i777 usb drivers. I downloaded ones that worked from softpedia actually.

No soldering required. It's just a ribbon cable that connects to the main chip. Took me about an hour from start to finish, but i was being really careful.

He has said his computer recognizes the device, albeit it sees it as an unknown device. And it makes a sound when plugging it in. This tells me it's not a usb port problem but a driver problem. I have had this same problem. As I stated above. Even after installing kies it still didn't recognize it. I had to install the android sdk package, open the program and update, and then it still wouldn't recognize it. I had to download separate usb drivers for the phone as well. Who knows why, some computers or operating systems just have a harder time with the drivers. That's the problem in my opinion. Here's hoping it's not a usb port problem. Also this would prevent charging if it were a faulty usb port on the phone wouldn't it?

I wonder if the OP tried this on a computer with Windows XP. I've noticed Vista and 7 seem to have a hard time discovering/installing some usb devices. As for it not charging also..I think the pins inside the port are used separately for charging and connecting to pc.
My computer recognized my phone fine back when it was the Captivate, but it has a really hard time with my GS2. It often will say "invalid hardware id" or not show up at all. Usually it's fixed by swapping ports.

A10E will not connect to PC. Suggestions???

I picked up a used A10e from the Metro by T-mob version (SM-102U).
Phone has been reset and in general works fine and is unlocked from the carrier. I swapped in a Verison sim and had no problems connecting to the different network. My issue is when I try to connect to the PC. I get a "Check your Charger Connection" pop-up and the PC doesn't recognize that anything is connected. Naturally ADB Devices does not find the phone.
Dev options are opened and I've tried with USB Debugging on and off.
I swapped in a known good charging port and port-to-main connector ribbon and the same thing happens.
I've tried connecting while in safe mode and same thing.
If I connect directly to a wall outlet no message and the phone charges at full USB-C speed.
I have a second A10E and the same PC recognizes that one just fine (where I got the working port & ribbon from to verify its not a simple hardware problem) so my drivers are good etc. Given the above and that the phone is in very good shape otherwise I don't think it's a hardware thing.
Would there be some software from Metro that would prevent the phone from connecting to PC? If so what can I do about it without rooting this guy? (I've spoken with Metro and they advised the phone is unlocked from everything on their end and they have nothing that would prevent connecting to PC...)
My intent is to get the junk cleaned off with ADB PM Uninstalls and get this phone in service asap.
All helpful suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
(as a follow up here, I've learned you can wirelessly connect your PC to the phone with ADB Connect however when I try that I get a response that the machine has actively refused the connection and does not give me an option on the phone to grant permission)
