HOW TO (3 Methods): Turn off display without using the power button - G2 General

Good: Double tap any blank area of any home screen
Better: Double tap status bar
Best IMO: Download and install LMT launcher from here to setup PIE controls. If you find the LMT settings intimidating watch this video. It'll walk you through setup. Go to settings>Set gesture input and choose #2. Under the PIE tab select your pie piece and then under advanced command options choose KEY and put the number 26. Now when you access your PIE shortcut labeled "KEY" it'll turn off the display.
Thanks to members trh1341 and _Sofos_ for helping me figure this out.

These are good tips guys. While I knew all of this. It's good someone got the word out a lot of people don't know!

Method #4: Lock/turn off your screen by tapping the Lock Screen App icon from your home screen, app drawer, or recent apps : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=kennethcheng.com.lockscreen.free
I used this on all my phones before I got my G2 and it worked flawlessly.

Does the LMT Launcher allow you to hide the stock soft keys?

You can also just wait anywhere from 30 seconds to 15 minutes and it will go off on its own, unless you have it on never turn off but I think it will eventually lol.

I am using nova launcher and double tap to turn on works fine but won't turn off. Double tap on the status bar is too tricky for me to operate on one hand.
Thanks to a xda user, to get it to turn off with double tap you will have to download /screen off/ app from play store and set the double tap quick key in nova to launch the app. Works like charm.

It's also easy to set up a Tasker task, and then call it on double tap from Apex or Nova
Elixir admin works too, but for some reason makes mine less responsive to double tap wakeup about 1/3 of the time

My favorite is Shake Off. A gentle twist or shake tturns the screen off and its adjustable sensitivity and direction options make it easy to keep from having the screen turn off too easily, pretty sure its free too. Very convenient and highly recommended.

[DIY] Knock-Off on any Non-Stock ROM

Just some info for everyone that is wondering, not sure if this has been covered yet, I looked and it seems that it hasn't been mentioned.
This is a very easy way to get customized knock-off (double-tap to turn off screen) working on any non-stock ROM where knock-off might not be included.
1. Download GMD Gesture Control from the market. You should probably use the paid version since the free version doesn't support custom gestures. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.goodmooddroid.gesturecontrol&hl=en
2. Download the Screen Off app (free). https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock&hl=en
3. Open up GMD and turn off any gestures you don't want that are included with the app.
4. Click on User Gestures up top, and then click path.
5. Under "Gesture Path", type in "T-T"
6. Click under action, select "application" and select "Screen Off" (the one that you just downloaded).
7. Click "Save" at the bottom, and bam. Double-tap goes to screen off.
**NOTE** I changed the starting zone (in the Create Gesture window) to only recognize double-taps on my status bar region, because often I would shut my screen off without meaning to.
Sorry, if this is a repost, I just spent a long hour pulling my hair out trying to get this to work with Nova launcher (wanted my double-tap to work anywhere in my ROM), and was super stoked when I figured this out.
Great idea I wonder why I haven't thought about this before
Thank you. I tried to spread the word on this method when CM was first released for the G2. My only difference is I use Secure Settings
Edit: just realized you missed another obvious bit
If you use Nova or Apex you can set a double tap gesture to turn off the screen the same way. Suddenly you have the same functionality as LG included

Ah good idea. Then you can have an easier time turning the screen off when you're in your launcher. Good stuff.

How can you do the screen off? I stopped using Nova because I could no longer turn off the screen, there is no turn screen of under gesture settings.

Hi,
It works with Nova, you need to double-tap in the notification bar area (but only here), nothing to set in Nova it works just like that...
How about screen on?

You are correct, there isn't a screen off option. However, you can set the double tap gesture to open a SHORTCUT that will turn the screen off.
I'm assuming the app OP linked to allows you to set a shortcut for screen off. If not, Secure Settings for sure does (it's what I use).
Here's proof that it works
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GvesNzvgKDQ&feature=youtube_gdata_player
That video uses OP's GMD Gesture control trick and Nova Launcher's double tap gesture. Only difference is I'm using secure settings instead of the screen off app
Ok, for those who want to use screen off with Nova or CM do this.
Download this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock&hl=en
in Nova Settings go to gesture and Buttons/ Double tap/ and select Screen off, Simple as that. GL

Tip: Getting "knock off" effect on any ROM

I don't know how many people actually know this, and if this is common knowledge I do apologize, but I thought I'd share how I did it.
Install Screen Off, launch it once to give it administrative rights. Go to Nova Settings, set up a double tap gesture to launch that app, and you have a pretty well-working "knock off" function.

This is a very good solution if in fact, you are using Nova Launcher. The problem I ran into with this is the effect is really fast. I mean that sounds like a nitpicky gripe, but it bothered me immensely that Nova wasn't quite as smooth as the stock launcher and since the phone is so uber fast, this fix is kinda glitchy looking since the screen off speed seems more than doubled. I'm not sure how to explain what I mean, but it bothered me. There are things that I just preferred about the stock launcher. I know that may seem crazy, but to each his own I guess. I would prefer an AOSP ROM with working Netflix using the stock LG launcher with AOKP UI and custom framework. This is why I haven't changed my ROM at this point. I'm picky.
I know, Nova feels hacky. It's a hard tradeoff more smoothest launched I've tried so far is the stock launcher on my 4.4 n4.
I ran aosp for about two days, it wasn't a very good experience. Especially not if your eyes get sore by rough edges. You should try Rayglobe rom. Will reply when I've found a better solution.

Edit:
The knock-off effect appears identical to the LG animation for me. It just simply starts the standard fade-out animation instantly. It should be the same as tapping the status bar twice, up there is default LG behaviour.
Yeah thats a good solution but i prefer the pie way.I m using pacman rom with pie controls, the wake up knock on working and when i want to close the screen i put a power button to pie controls.more easy no hitting the screen
If you do this does a double tap anywhere trigger the action? I double tap to zoom on webpages, so I'd need it restricted to the status bar.

No need for another app if you have tasker installed. Just do a task for System Lock. Then under nova, select that task.

It should work by default for any rom (as far as I'm aware). Double tap to zoom will still work as Nova is a launcher, not an UI. It's an app. Your browser is an app and if you're in your browser, then the app Nova will not take precedence over that open app.

Knock off with ss launcher!

Ok, so knock on always works with a third party launcher, but you have to knock the status bar to knock off right? Well, I just found that sslauncher has a double tap action option, and while sleep isn't built in, if you have xposed, and gravity box installed you can put it to sleep with a double tap. Select double tap action in sslauncher preferences, select gravity box, select sleep. Then you can double tap anywhere on the launcher and put the phone to sleep

There is an app called screen off, you have gestures in any third party launcher and go to activities and then go to the screen off app and select screen off.

There are a lot more advantages to xposed then just having knock off. I removed the nav keys and replaced them with pie (Instant screen size increase), changed the status bar icon colors, enabled slide across the status bar brightness control, cleaned up the notification shade, and much much more.

Rather than using pie, I disabled the nav bar and use Ultimate Dynamic Navbar instead and change the background to transparent, and the size to minimum. Since the size of the navbar is so small, it doesnt' intrude as much even when I try to click on the content near the bottom of the screen. I never like pie that much since I have to siwpe up and then select one of the buttons. It just seems to be unintuitive.

I can definitely see where the pie can be unintuitive, for me personally I've gotten so used to it that it's like a single motion to make a selection, and it feels very second nature now, but I love changing things up so I might give ultimate dynamic a whirl sometime.

Hi, yes i know about all that features just wanted to show a simpler way as your thread title says: "Knock off with ss launcher!" it doesn't say "Look what you can do with Xposed eg. Knock-Off".. anyway if that's the solution for you then everythings cool :good:

Quick Circle case and Nova Launcher?

Does anyone know if the quick Circle case works with Nova Launcher?! Or do you need to be on the stock launcher to use it effectively? I know Nova doesn't have double tap to wake / sleep so that seems like it could cause issues. It's not a big deal for me because the stock launcher doesn't seem so bad compared to what I've used in the past... I just wanna know because I love me some Nova launcher and if I can still use it with all the benefits LG threw in that'll be nice!
I'm using both.
Double tap to wake works fine, doesn't work to tap off. I was worried about it until I remembered that just shutting the case would kill the screen.. Otherwise I let the screen time out when it's laying on my desk at work.
There are workarounds to get double tap to sleep working though.
You won't get access to the LG only widgets however, unless that's been figured out..

Double tap to sleep also works on Nova if you Double tap on the notification bar...
You can also download tap to sleep off the play store, then on Nova under setting set the double tap gesture and set the tap to sleep app as the action. And it works just like stock now.

Nova also makes the rom have 2 settings. The one in the app drawer is in list view and the one in the pull down shade is tabbed view. If you look at the icons under recents the icons are different. Any ideas?

[Q] It's lost when using Nova Launcher

I just switched over to Nova Launcher because I have my homescreen set up nice from previous devices. However, when I did this, I lost the a couple things I can seem to get back while using Nova; 1) Smart Notification (the LG widget showing weather and what not) and 2) double tap screen to lock.
With double tap to lock I did try to use the double tap gesture in the Nova Gesture settings but it isn't an option and I can't find it in the other choices.
Anyone know if there is a way to get those back?

Install the G3TweaksBox xposed module. There's an option for the Knock On Nav Bar in there and it works just fine with Nova.
Not sure about the smart Notification deal I don't use it.

Double tap notification bar to sleep. Works without any mods.
Download this app and set Nova Launcher's double tap gesture to open it.
As for the widget, well, it's pretty common that widgets from LG/Samsung/HTC et al don't work with third-party launchers. Unfortunately there isn't a solution.
