What happened to the ME7 root awards? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Does this mean that it is safe to update to me7 and then root per the instructions?
When I look at the software update choice on the phone it says that settings failed??

Not only, NO! But HELL NO! If you're on MDK do not take update to ME7. You can, however, flash roms based upon ME7 - - like Hyperdrive.

I did and the root worked. Why was this a bad idea? I want to be able to move apps to the external SD card.

Now, you cannot flash a custom recovery nor custom roms. I hope you gain much by moving perhaps a gig of apps to your SD card - - you have paid a very high price to do so. Now your only option for custom roms is safestrap. I wish you the best of luck.

I will not be running other Roms. Just would like a nandroid backup. Is safestrap safe for this?
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 2

Look at the general questions area.... I think somebody talks about ss and nandroid... they said that it can backup roms, but not stock.
This sounds plausible because HashCode, the SS Dev, said that he bas to work more on SS before you can do anything with stock rom... even backup

Wrong, VZW never had an unlocked bootloader...both MDK and ME7 are locked.
Why are so many people misinformed?

Because people think as long as they can flash ROMs, it's unlocked. You and I know it's only a workaround, but most users don't.
I'd much rather have to use Loki than SS, as cool as SS sounds.

Look for the following. In settings> more>about phone

If it is the mdk you have the option to root with options for custom ROMs, me7 is root only, no custom ROMs.
Well in that case, how did you do it from Mac? Luckily I have a big chunky dell for work so I have that option.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 4
I used a Mac myself. To see if your on me7 goto settings then "about phone" which is under the more tab. Look at the last 3 digits of the baseband number. It will be either mdk or me7.

I am me7
I actually found a way to root on the device itself. I just copied the files to my sd and used the terminal emulator on the phone to root. I then went into quickboot/recovery and it put me into "Downloading...Do not turn off target!!" I finally got out of that.
That's the only way to do it on me7. You will need windows I believe to revert back to stock for any reason.

So can I do backups or any kind of recoveries with me7?
You can backup with titanium for apps but no recoveries yet. But it is coming soon.

The bootloader is basically the ''set of instructions'' the phone uses to boot. Usually it instructs the device to boot the os kernel or the recovery environment. The bootloader loaded the system recovery because you either held volume up + power when booting, ran the reboot recovery command, accepted the ota, or your device was unable to load the os.

No recovery is not the same as the bootloader. Here is an explanation of what exactly it is

Just as a heads up im going to throw it out there. Currently there is no way to flash a custom recovery on the me7 firmware.

No, once on the me7 ota youre stuck without a custom recovery/roms. To flash an me7 based rom you have to be on mdk prior.

Help with root?

Soo im new with this rooting stuff and my friend was telling me that I need to "install a recovery" with clockwordmod. Im trying to get 4.4 on my phone. can someone explain this to me without sounding to confusing? I am rooted, i have rom manager and super user. But thats as far as I've gotten. Any help would be great, thanks!!

You got SU permission? Download the CAM loki zip that's is in another forum here. Instructions are there for ya. Super simple and easy as long as you have root permission
unless you on another bootloader than MDK. Only MDK can install recoveries. All others use safestrap

I suggest you do some serious reading here in XDA and there are a number of youtube videos also. Unless you have a S4 that came with MDK base, you can not load any custom recovery out there like phiz or twrp or Cwm and you limited to safestrap and the roms that are specifically compatible with safestrap. Good luck to you.
Yes I definitely agree with reading a lot.... borderline till your eyes bleed. Lol
Joking aside I've been working with android development for a few years now and the s4 can be difficult to understand for someone new to it.
If your on a build that allows you install a recovery then your in luck (mdk). However if you're like the rest of us on a locked bootloader then you need to use the safe strap process.
It's not hard just need to do your research.
Good luck

Ok, so your on mj7 which means you need to get root if you don't already have it, install safe strap 3.7 and then load a custom rom to one of its rom slots.
I would read the safe strap thread to get more info before you jump into it.

You can flash some custom ROMs, but no custom recovery, no CM (until someone ports it to the Touchwiz kernel), and no AOSP (ditto).
For rooting, go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758
Read the Safestrap thread in that forum for more info on what you can do to boot custom ROMs.
My phone is already rooted, but I'll read over the thread for more info!!

MJ7 rom status?

Last I checked there wasn't a way to use any custom ROMs on a Verizon S4 running MJ7. Is this still the case?

Yea you can update to mk2 to be able to take the ota you need to unroot and get rid of any xposed mods you may have and or restore anything you may have frozen using tibu.
If that still doesn't work you may have to Odin back to whatever your Current version is then take the ota
Then root using saferoot method and install Safestrap and you're off to the races.

You just create a rom slot then flash the Hyperdrive zip plus the mk2 modules.. Then reboot and you're good.
Be sure you download the Hyperdrive for SS zip.

Updating Android with root/ss

Hi all, I got a couple questions. I'm currently still on 4.3, running a safe-strapped Rom (Galaxy s4, VZW). I'd like to upgrade to KK.
Is the latest firmware available OTA still NC5?
What method will I need to upgrade, OTA or flash stock? Since I'm rooted, is an OTA even an option? I do have SuperSU pro's survival mode (I heard that worked for a couple people). I'm guessing otherwise I'd have to Towel root.
Finally, I assume I should delete the custom ROM slot and factory wipe my stock slot before updating. Will doing a reset affect safe strap, or will it leave it alone?
Thanks!

Thank you for the link, and everything else you've done around here, Bob. I read around a little but I couldn't figure this out: do I have to use Surge's method to upgrade or can I take an alternative route (in guessing Odin) , now that towel root exists?
I'm hesitant only bc I tried to use his downgrade /upgrade methods on a different phone and had some problems. Thanks.

You can't use ROM slots with 3.72 safestrap. ROM must be installed to stock slot. Take and research this info.
