What recovery...? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Hey guys I have used TWRP for a long time but I have had some issues with it. I was just wondering what recovery you guys prefer? (Philztouch, TWRP, CWM, etc...)

I came from the Moto Bioinc so I had to use SafeStrap and that is based on TWRP so I'm partial to TWRP and I'm on the most stable on 2.5.0.2. Unless i HAVE to upgrade i will be staying on 2.5.0.2. It's been Flawless and I've had ZERO issues with it reading my SD Card.

Thanks
Thanks for the info, what a great community!

I haven't had a problem with the updated 2.6.3.0 twrp.

Twrp cwm help?

Hey i have a rooted dna of course and i typically use clockworkmod recovery in which i had issues with. I switched to TWRP and they both are giving me issues and wont complete a backup? i searched to see if i could find solutions? does anyone know which version of either twrp or cwm would perform successful backups without quitting and just rebooting? or can direct me to the right thread?
I'm using CWM. I'm having the same issue. I have one successfully backup that works. It has 10 files in the backup. Every backup I've made since that would appear to be successful would have only 9 files and won't successfully restore. I've installed Viper DNA and can't back it up. Not sure how to get a successful one again.

I might go back to TWRP. It's probably more stable than it was when I last used it. Do you know where latest version is?
Edit. Installed through goo.im. Backup rebooted at midpoint. This phone certainly makes being a crack flasher more interesting.

I've never seen such a unstable recovery in all of my devices. . Not sure what makes this one more difficult?

[Q] Is it ok to use AOSP based Recovery for Non-AOSP Rom?

As the title indicates I am not fond of the clockwork mod recovery and would like to use the teamwin projects which is AOSP based. I want to load up the official deoxed debloated ROM which as far as I know if non-AOSP based. is that going to be a problem? Sorry for the dumb question, first time loading up a new rom only started rooting a couple weeks ago.

No but a better recovery is 4ext. CWM is old and doesn't properly wipe the boot partition.

Sorry for the late response. That is exactly what I was looking for an alternative to clockworkmod recovery. Thanks a bunch.

[Q] TWRP or CWM

Hey guys,
So I am thinking about flashing an AOSP ROM. A lot of them seem to mention to flash in CWM. I currently have TWRP on my phone. Will it be necessary to switch? If yes, how do I go about doing that and will the backups that I made with TWRP work in CWM?
Unless the dev specifically says dont use twrp. Youll be fine. I use twrp, but I also havent flashed an asop rom yet. But youll be fine.

Switch by just using ROM manager to flash cwm and no your backups aren't interchangeable.

To get back to TWRP I just uninstall ROM manager and install via GooManager?
You wouldn't even need to uninstall ROM manager, just use goo to reflash TWRP

TWRP 2.5

I've read of some issues with TWRP 2.5 flashing new mods when using ViperLTE. How can I revert back to an earlier version if this should become an issue for me? Does anybody have a link for an earlier version that is still trouble free? I can only find 2.5...Thanks.

When you move between different recovery versions, you aren't "upgrading" or "downgrading". You simply replace the old with the new. There is a link in the main TWRP thread to the fireball page at teamw.in. Older versions can be found there.
What's the easiest way to replace it? I downloaded the .img file for 2.3. Do I have to use my computer or is there a method using just my phone?

There are multiple ways to install a recovery, all of them are are in TWRP original post under development. If you have any questions just pm me. I'll help as much as possible
The issue is NOT the recovery build.
I flashed Venom with TWRP 2.5.0.0 just fine.

[Q] Please help, Screen of Death on ANY KitKat ROM

It's really starting to bother me. I even thought that it might be that I deleted files I needed, so I completely unrooted and factory reset my phone, then rerooted and installed CM11, but it still did it.
ROM's I've tried that do it: CM11, Gummy Rom, OmniRom, AOKP
Any KitKat ROM causes my phone to Screen of Death and I can not for the life of me figure out the cause.
Please, can someone help me out?

I will say this. Twrp 2.5.0.2 is probably the best recovery for this phone. Others have had success with various recoveries. But IMO it seems to be the best.
That being said let's alter your process.
Factory Reset is fine. Then go to advanced wipe, select system, Data, Cache, davlik. Then Wipe.
Install rom and gapps. Reboot. Don't wipe cache and dalvik again.
Let me know.
If that didn't work I'll help you get to the right version of TWRP.
Let me know.
Which gapps? Make sure it is a version for 4.4.2.
Banks gapps or PA gapps are fine.

I use the Cyanogenmod Gapps from their list. And today is the first day running the new TWRP. For the last five months or so I was on 2.5.0.2 and I had the same problem. So I don't think that's the issue. I'm really at a loss though, I can't figure it out at all. But I'll definitely try your method.

Google banks gapps. Use the standard Version for 4.4.2. It's a small download. Let's mix it up. Try nameless or beanstalk, roms I know are working great right now. Get the latest beanstalk țhru goo the op isn't updated I don't think. Or the latest nameless.

At this point I'll try anything. Any preference between beanstalk or namless? I prefer a more stock experience, like CM offers. And just use xposed to customize.

they both can be very customizable. But if you leave them be they are very stock looking. Cyanogenmod is the base for both. I'm very partial to nameless right now personally. But they are both very good. I just know both are really stable right now.
