I am disappointed in the Cameras on the Sony Xperia Z Ultra - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

I am disappointed in the Cameras on the Sony Xperia Z Ultra
Sony is the one company who uses there own optics and camera lenses so for even the middle range 8 megapixel found on the Z Ultra i am shocked at how bad the fuzziness/blurriness my photos are turning out
also not to mention the god awful zoom quality!!!
i was hoping the back facing 8 megapixel camera would of atleast of been the same if it better than the LG Google Nexus 4 camera
is it just me or is this indeed the same issues for all other Sony Xperia Z Ultra users?
Thanks in advance for taking the time to read
hope to hear the Community's thoughts on this

You bought a "phablet" that's 6.5mm thick and without a flash. You knew what you got yourself into, but i do agree. It's Sony after all, and i expected a little more from a company that's generally really good at making cameras. I wish they could chill with all the over processing and sharpening, and maybe, just maybe we'd get a tiny quality bump.

Yes... 8Mp camera is not as good as it could be. The sensor is actually really good, and if sony left the post processing alone, and also didn't make the images so damn small (1-2mb per image) then it would be ok.
Because the image data cap is set so small, there is no depth to the images. Zooming in tells all.
It seems sony are mostly concerned with small images, that lack quality, as opposed to full sized images that use more space...

the camera was good on .475
after that camera is die.
Don't believe me? flash it.

All the reviews I have read, all mentioned the disappointment of the camera before my purchase.
As a result, I didn't expect much from the camera. However, I didn't expect it to be that <<BAD>> upon using the phone.
I'm contemplating about getting the QX10/QX100. But, I'm hearing from sources that it won't fit on our Ultra

It seems that they upgraded the software on 532 and the camera is better now. I can take decent picture with minimum noise.

I just flashed cyanogen....and camera there is better than on any stock

Is there a camera app anywhere that will let you adjust how much processing and \or compression you want?
Sent from my Xperia Z Ultra using xda app-developers app

I don't have a Z Ultra so can't say if they work, but 'Camera FV 5' is meant to take lossless/raw photos and 'camera 360' I think has a compression setting, so you could try one of those two to see if the z ultra camera can give better results.

hey when flashing to CM... whats with the boot.img and then booting to CWM to flash the ROM?
Why can't it just be using CWM to clean install and then flash CM and gapps?
Ive wondered that about sony devices for a while now

Boot.img it's cyanogen own recovery so you basically flashing recovery which is working only with cyanogen.

And how are you finding camera function? Cause that's probably the main reason I would change to cm. Obviously there are other pluses for Cm. But I do find the Sony ui pretty good. (apposed to touchwiz.. Lol)

Doesn't the boot.img contain the kernel as well as the recovery?
If so its likely to be the Kernel that is specific to CM rather than the recovery.
Does the CM recovery contain TWRP or just CWM.. I really prefer TWRP myself.

What about those flashable Bravia Engine 2?

Well i still ask myself to unlock bl or not to... and the reasons for that is:
1. Loosing Bravia Engine 2
2. Loosing those DRM Keys
Well I am not that familiar with that stuff but I keep asking myself:
1. Isn't it possible to get BE2 back using Pimp my Rom or some zip file contending it?
2. I use MXPlayer for VideoPlayback so do I really need those DRM Keys?
Any suggestion or clear answer would be nice!

I don't know if its possible to get back BE2, but you should be fine with video playback without the DRM keys.

BE2 is totally superfluous, makes colors only worse and oversaturated.
So, f*** BE2 and go ahead.

I've been following these forums since i got my Tablet Z and I've seen a lot of users mentioning that you lose BE2 after unlocking the boot loader and i was curious to find out if it really make that much of a difference? Because i was to impatient when i got my tablet to get root that i unlocked my boot loader.
I have the boot loader unlocked and still get BE2 ?? !!

It makes a visible difference by increasing saturation of colors, contrast, etc.
But in practice it is screwing with the picture displayed rather than actually hardware technology or software that is always dynamically adjusting your screen.
I have two sample screenshots, with one of the preloaded photographs for you to see the actual effect of MBE2:
Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2 DISABLED

}
With Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2 ENABLED
As you can see it's a software layer that can actually be captured with screenshots. It delivers a noticeable effect that makes images more 'poppy' with increased contrast by darkening darker areas and lightening brighter ones, while boosting saturation across the board. This delivers a more "vivid" picture, but it is increasingly unrealistic or inaccurate. The increased saturation and contrast can also wash out details (notice the loss of texture in the magenta red boat, as it becomes a flat mass of red).
MBE2 makes for a nice showcase on the showfloor because people are generally attracted by vivid color and contrast, but people who want screen accuracy (i.e. me) will want it turned off. Despite that though, I prefer to keep the feature available, because I'm not a fan of losing features in the first place.
Thank you for posting those screenshots, i did notice the colors stood out more with BE2 enabled (in the second screenshot) but when you mentioned the loss of texture in the red boat i couldn't believe the difference.
Where to get the latest BE 2 for CM 10.1 pollux?
I have just installed the stable CM10.1 pollux and I did not know about the BE2 until now.
I would like to know where I can get the latest BE 2?
I saw different threads with phones and the BE 2 but not for xperia z tablet itself.
Is the BE 2 use on the Z phone () the same as the Z tablet?
Cheers
Forget BE.
Pictures and videos definitely look better and more natural without it.
BE is only something for the same people who also think "much bass" = "good sound".

There's a tool to backup TA partition before unlocking which can be restored later and it bring DRM back, BE etc. You'll find it in Xperia Z developement section. All questions are asked there.
After unlocking Bravia still works but only for pictures if I remember correctly, you loose it only for videos.
If you have to send back your tablet to customer service just restore TA and nobody will notice it had been unlocked.
Beware Hard brick if misused!

[MOD] Xperia Z Ultra touchScreen mod/tweak

I had a touchscreen sensitivity problem that I've now resolved, I use an aftermarket screen protector on top of the anti shatter film that comes pre installed on our phones, and my keyboard was all over the place when swiping, it seemed the screen was too sensitive even with the additional protector on, I'm using build .527
I found the following file, max1187x_touchscreen_0.idc in the /system/usr/idc directory, and just altered the touch.filter.level = 2 line using Root Explorer.
Tried all values upto 7, which for me is when the sensitivity became too low and I had to press hard to get the keyboard to cooperate, I found for me the optimum setting is 5, so the line now read's touch.filter.level = 5 as per the attached screenshot.
You may have to experiment to get your optimum setting but for me every word I swipe is correct and I always hit the smallest of checkboxes first time now with 5.

Yeah us Ultra users over the fence have the same issue. I believe its purely software.
Reason being is that its not quite as bad, and by default these settings are difference. So have a play, and maybe even go as high as 6 and that should make the issues go away, however you may need to touch the screen, not just gently breeze over it.

My issue is that it loses touch for a period of time and you have to lift your finger in order for the screen to work again, this happens more on flat surfaces especially in bed. It's annoying since it affects the gaming experience. I hope this can ease the problem, so what i need in this case is increased or decreased sensitivity?

For now I am just building and releasing unofficial builds. Official builds will come eventually.
Saved for later
I just installed the ROM and it's really smooth! It's hard to notice any lag at all and the camera works fine.. Battery is draining a little too fast though.
I'm gonna stay on thus ROM for today and report tonight its 2:10 pm in where I'm at.
Where is the download link?.... OK I found it ?this is the best rom I used on s2 let see how it goes on d855
I just found out that pre-installed (in developer settings) Root don't work, apps think that root has been allowed but it really isn't. And after installin SuperSu it says that it can't install it's binaries.. Its not a big problem but just so y'all know its there

I don't have any root issues as previously stated, but I always flash the su zip after any ROM.
The hotspot always shows no connected devices, other than that everything is running smooth without issue.
Thanks
Is there any plan for Korean variants? Thanks!
Can I ask how's Camera Quality on this rom?
Specially shutter speed and pictures quality under low light. On vacations right now so can't download and flash myself but looking forward to it.

All aosp etc cams are basically the same. There OK, but if your looking for near stock quality, its not going to come in a custom ROM.
Some of us are running the moto cam, which seems a bit better than the aosp cam, but still a good bit off stock.
Its just the way it is until someone figures out how to port the stock cam to aosp, which may never happen.

I don't want to derail this thread too much with cam talk, but to sum things up, I took some identical shots with the moto cam, camera 51 from the play store, and the one you posted.
Moto cam was without doubt the worst.
Your cam and cam 51 were nearly identical, but I think cam 51 was very slightly better in a mixed lighting condition, which I believe is where a lot of the non stock cams fail to keep up that's why I chose this as a test. I was sitting under light with light at my back shooting towards a dimly lit area.
I actually just found the cam 51 last night, so I haven't been able to test it thoroughly yet, but it looks very promising, as does yours.
Thanks

All right.
Rooters:
do FxP's AOSP builds support USB-OTG? The reason I ask is that Sony changed this in their official ROM by having to search for USB devices via a (Quick) Settings entry, because the port cannot be powered due tot the water resistance.
do FxP's AOSP builds have support for changing the display's white balance? This is also a custom Sony thing.
do Sony's ROMs running on an unlocked Z4T still have support for changing the display's white balance?

A few other annoying things are that NFC and gyroscope, accelerometer and such (screen rotation) don't seem to work for me at least (after 4 reflashes it's the same) and there is no recovery as far as I know for it (the androplus one didn't work)... But hey USB and WiFi tethering/hotspot works! (doesn't seem to be a option on the stock WiFi only firmware)

1. No.. the port seems to always be off
2. No
3. Don't know
A few other annoying things are that NFC and gyroscope, accelerometer and such (screen rotation) don't seem to work for me at least (after 4 reflashes it's the same) and there is no recovery as far as I know for it (the androplus one didn't work)... But hey USB and WiFi tethering/hotspot works! (doesn't seem to be a option on the stock WiFi only firmware)

Oh my. So on AOSP I don't have NFC, gyroscope, accelerometer, USB-OTG and white balance controls? Can anyone confirm?
I'm on the verge of unlocking the bootloader to run AOSP, but if this is the case with the current builds, that are based on the only Sony sources, I'm really let down. It's practically unusable.

Well thats what i have seen so far on my device... AOSP is pretty useless for anything but using the 810 as a nice hand warmer Going to flash back the stock FW on my unlocked bootloader and see if the white balance still works

white balance works www . dropbox . com/s/knt1i34317o6e30/Screenshot_2015-10-07-10-11-18.png?dl=0 (remove spaces in link)
pic of the menu open it doesnt look nearly as much diffrent on the screenshot as it does in person when you move the sliders so i say it works
Is there a way to fully Deodex the stock ROM?

Which apk did you use?
i use the apk from here https://www.droidlime.com/artikel/cara-install-kamera-google-pixel-2-di-xiaomi-redmi-5a.html
It works like magic.
Taken with stock auto:

With Gcam HDR+ Auto:
Took 14 photos today with both Redmi 5 Plus and Mi 5s in low light. Both with google camera (same settings). See the results here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/sets/72157692005458944
As you can see, the OV12A10 sensor in Redmi 5 Plus is very good when combined with good software (Gcam HDR+). Almost as good as IMX378 used in Mi 5s (also used in Pixel 1:gen).
I used this apk: https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/...018.177470874.41362666__A7.0-8.1_MI5S_v2e.apk
suggested settings: https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/f/settings03/

True. Perhaps some other version of the apk or another configuration works with the front camera. In a worst case scenario, you can still use the Gcam-app for rear camera photos and the stock-app for selfies. Personally, I never use the frontcam.

Tried that one. However, I often get force close using that apk.
This one works without force close and has a working selfie-camera (but no hdr+ for selfies or potrait mode): https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/...0H_C2API_Full_PXL2_v.1.4_60FPS_noburst_v3.apk
