[Q] SM-N900P Wifi Tether - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 3

I have rooted my Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 3, mainly so I can tether. However, upon installing Wifi Tether (I tried regular as well as TrevE Mod), and entering the usual settings, I found that it does not work with this phone. Does anyone know of a way to use wifi tethering on this phone? Is TrevE going to update his app to work with the Note 3? Developers, if you are seeing this, such an app would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Wife Tether Router is working for me after rooting my note 3. Had to play around with the settings at first. Ad hoc mode works, but none of the other modes would work.

Confirmed. Wifi Tether Router works for me too. $1.95 on the Google Play store. Configure as Method 3 Ad-Hoc.

Do I have to be rooted to use this? I know it's a silly question with a yes answer but I have seen a few post with people saying they have been boot looping like crazy after a successful root with no way to fix it?

I used Chainfire's easy root method the day I got the phone and it works with no problem. Wifi Tether Router does require root, but it is confirmed working where the Trevemod that most people use does not currently work until the dev updates support.

They seem to suspect that TWRP is causing the boot loop (I haven't installed recovery yet) but I'm rooted using chainfire method and haven't had any issues with booting. But yes, rooting would be required to get around sprint's official wireless tether.

This is the app: ($1.95)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.snclab.wifitetherrouter&hl=en
Configure according to Dev's 4.3 instructions with the following settings:
Interface - wlan0
Method 3 - HostApd (AD-HOC)

Wifi tether router with the structions below ....only my computera recognized and it works but ....but with any cellphone cant connect ....so anny idead??

It's the fact that you have to use adhoc and not infrastructure ..... have to wait until they fix it

I bought Wifi Tether Router, and it works, but there are a few things I cannot stand about it. A security passcode cannot be set on an ad-hoc connection, so anyone can connect. Also, even after I tap disable, the ad-hoc connection is still active! New devices can still see the hotspot until I turn on my wifi and connect to a network.

Does this work with 4g as well?

Look like I'll be holding off until there's a secure connection. Can't stand open network.

It may not be wifi hotspot, but for a good workaround for now I'm using Pdanet+ on my Note 3 and Bluetooth tethering to my tablets using Pdanet Tablet. This creates a secure VPN connection to the tablet and all my streaming apps work fine on it. Haven't tested it with LTE yet but going to try that tomorrow.

I use Barnacle wifi tether. available in the play store. free and wireless encryption. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.szym.barnacle

Confirmed working on Note 3....but only on ad hoc mode...(open network)....I attempted to download Barnacle wifi app from the play store but message comes up saying that the app is not supported by my carrier (Sprint)....So..I downloaded the latest apk from the Barnacle website to my laptop..then I emailed the apk as an attachment to myself and installed it that way....works good...and its free....

I use Barnacle as well, but doesn't seem to support WEP, only ad hoc, wide open. Anyone having luck getting WEP to work, and if so, care to share your settings?

Same here, unable to get WEP to work with Barnacle, but at least I have some free wireless tether going. Confirmed working, thanks!

what settings are being used for Barnacle? i tried to start it and it fails every time.

Barnacle
I'm using Barnacle as well It seems to work well in ad hoc however, plugged in, it works on tether and leaves no vacant Wifi network. Seems to be a good workaround until the encrypted app is available.
I'm Sorry, I take it back. I unplugged and the whole world can still see my Business. LOL

The native hot spot works now also.
Would seem the best option to me.
The only real caveat at the moment seems to be there is no odex version so must be running a deodex rom.
Which is simple enough and an odex version should be along shortly

[Q] What does everyone use for wifi tethering?

I have a TB and a Wifi XOOM, and I have been using the mobile hotspot app to share my 3g/4g connection to the XOOM for a few days now with no problems. Yesterday I installed the Gingeritis ROM and have been experiencing some weird issues...
The Wifi connection remains stable but after about 30-60 minutes I need to restart my phone and re open the hotspot app to get a data connection again.
The reason i'm posting this thread is for two reasons: one is to find if anyone has the same issues using Gingeritis that I have experienced, the other is to find out if anyone has other methods of tethering that they recommend.
I used to use the Wireless Tether app on my X but have not tried it on the TB since the mobile hotspot app has been free so far; will that work?
Any recommendations are welcome, especially soon because i'll be on a train for 3 hours later and if I don't have to keep rebooting my phone that would be nice.
Thanks

I use the wireless tether app on my rooted TB. Works great, never had a problem. Another app you can try is Barnacle, you can get it from the Market. Both have worked great, I used to us Barnacle more because it let you control the amount of power the radio put out and thus save on battery lifr. However, I can't seem to find that option any longer. Try Wireless Tether, I've used it with multiple PC and iPads with no problems!
I use wireless tether to my wifi xoom almost daily.

It's still on the market, but it's hidden by a Verizon block. Can get it via the market if you kick into airplane mode and search over wifi.

Tether to my ipad..

You rock, I use this app and just got it off the web but I tried the Airplane mode trick you mentioned so I could get it via market for auto updates! Thanks man.
***EDIT*** (Turns out that even though its in "My Apps" under the market on my TBolt, I cant update it unless I turn off the radio. If you click on the app after its installed with you radio on it "cant find" the app. Verizon really doesn't want you to have that app I guess. Whatever though, you can download it from market over wifi.)***
Ohh and I (obviously) use Wireless Tether.
Works awesome. I used on last Monday on the beach in Hilton Head with 4G so the wife could log into work for a end of year teacher meeting on her laptop.

Ditto. I keep Barnacle and Wi Tether both so I can switch from time to time.
Both have always worked well.
I use the Sprint Tether app on the EVO 3D port, the T-Mobile Tether app on the Sensation port, the inbuilt Verizon app on stock (free until July) or the built-in FroYo tether on AOSP ROMs. There's no reason to download another app when these are pre-installed.
I play COD off of my WiFi tether app on PS3 and have no issues. It seems to run faster on Gingerites than BAMF.

[Q] WiFi Tethering for Rooted Photon

Has anyone tried any of the wi-fi tethering apps on the market with a rooted Photon? Did it work or will we have to wait for an unlocked bootloader and a custom ROM?
I find tethering to be occasionally useful, but not useful enough to pay an additional $30/month.
I usually tether to a tablet so Bluetooth/USB solutions won't work.
Thank you.
I would love to know that answer.

Can you tell me if it runs in AP (Infrastructure Mode) or Ad hoc?
I had this problem originally on my evo (before wifi tether supported infra) that a lot of devices will only connect to an access point running in AP (infrastructure) mode.

It only worked on Adhoc mode. I could connect laptops and ipod/ipad but not Galaxy Tab10.1. I had to do Adhoc modification on the tab so it can connect. I hope wifi tether app gets updated to support AP mode on Photon soon.

The software has the options, but the drivers must support it. The Evo didn't get infrastructure mode support in the drivers until 2nd 2.2 update I think.
Either, its up to the wifi tether people to update it for photon like they did for the evo.
On a rooted Photon, is there a way to enable native Android tethering, which seems to be currently hijacked by the Sprint app? Because that would provide infrastructure mode.
i think the question is, where do we request support for the photon?
Anyone having any luck with a solution?
Same problem here ... installed wifi tether on my rooted photon. Can start tethering, clients can join the network, but there's no data communication. Upload/download counters don't change and the client never gets an IP address. Anyone have any luck? I downloaded the current 3-1 beta.
Mine works fine, just downloaded it from the market. Not sure why some of your guys' isnt working.
It works, just not for the devices we want it to[read: devices that use infrastructure], such as the xoom in my case, as well as other tablets. Works great for my girlfriend's macbook though...

I've rooted the MoPho and installed the beta version of WT. I've also tried Barnacle and even the native Hotspot function in the phone all to the same result.
I can see the SSID in inSSIDER and on the network list in Win7. I select it and enter the security key but get a message that Win cannot connect.
Ideas? Am I missing a step?
After some more tinkering I found that if I turned off encryption WT beta works. It's quite slow even with a 4g connection but it works. I also tried Barnacle and the native hotspot application and they both connected but had no internet access.
Ao it looks like WT beta is the answer. Now if anybody can help get encryption to work that would be most helpful.
I haven't had any problems off the market, only device I've tried on it is an ipad 2 though

how would you do wired tethering to a tablet? foxfi is only needed for wireless i belive. if you want to do wireless tethering just get wifi tether. works great
I am trying easy tether lite.
Basically its connected to PC and app is working, it works on websites. However things like ssh connections dont appear to even try to use the connection they still go over my wired broadband connection. According to the FAQ only UDP is blocked, so I have emailed the author to see if its a true internet sharing app or just for web.
After a bit of research, I have found the following methods for full, free USB tethering with no limitations and for free USB reverse tethering:
I found this app for USB tether. It is entirely free and allows https and all. It took me a bit of time to figure out how to make it work: I did it by going to Chrome Settings > Advanced settings > Proxy settings > LAN settings > Use proxy server for LAN; Adress: localhost; Port: 8080.
Then I started the connection from the app, also set to port 8080. Although Windows never recognized any internet connection, it worked in Chrome.
To switch back to my DSL internet or Wi-Fi, I had to disable the proxy again.
For the reverse tether, I found this Windows tool. It allows reverse tethering with nothing installed on the phone (although root is needed). The only problem with it is that the Play Store is unable to download over its connection, but one can always go to play.google.com in the phone's browser and download things from there.
easy tether does actually work on everything, I paid for it now.
I got no idea if any free apps that have full tethering. CM7 rom supposedbly has it but for some reason the option isnt on my phone's version of CM7.

Foxfi is good enough for systems where adhoc networks don't matter. The only way I have been succussful with tethering on the touch pad is with root and Wifi Tether app. Just Google it and side load it as it is not in the market. I hope that helps.
instead of using androids built in wifi settings to connect, I use "wifi analyzer". its free in google play, and allows you to see and do things that you can't using stock wifi connection settings. You can set different channels for a 5ghz as well as b/g/n 2.4ghz, as well as reconnect options etc etc. it's a nice way to see which channels are best to connect with.
Thanks,I will give that a try

just because a device is rooted does not mean it will automatically see an ad-hoc connection from another android device. ad-hoc/peer to peer connections from droid to droid are tricky and flakey alot of times or just wont work at all depending on the kernel. everyone usually thinks that tethering and hotspot are the same thing. they are not. there is a big difference between ad-hoc and infrastructure connections.
FWIW, I have zero issues tethering my TP using the stock tethering feature of my Galaxy Nexus.

what i did for quite a while was, i got foxfi, and i purchased the key. (it was a lot cheaper when paid key first came out).
the biggest thing you need to remember is, with a tablet, t mobile doesn't detect it. on a laptop, use chrome, and download the "user agent switcher" extension for it. use an Android browser, and you can slip past the guards.
Fox-Fi is a excellent choice, i have used it non stop with no interuptions
