Keys on the back - G2 General

Love it !! :good:
I think they are brilliant, never in the way when using phone, perfect position when needed. I would like a shutter button though, or at least they move the buttons closer to top of screen in camera app. When doing video, the stop button is hard to reach.

Yea I like them also, I never realized how much I hit the side buttons on accident while holding our picking my phone up and changing the volume or power button.

I know, and it works perfect for duckface, but I prefer landscape photos.

Oh I use the voice capture for landscape pics

I really notice them (or don't) when I'm holding the phone landscape watching a video. I LOVE not accidentally hitting the power or volume buttons! Rear buttons FTW!

Yes best thing since sliced bread ?

its bliss, also like it my wife doesnt accidentally hit another button when showing stuff.

I like silencing a call when without removing the phone from my pocket; with the phone face down. So easy to do with the buttons on the back.

Surprizingly useful. My wife, or others not familiar with whatever android I had always turned the phone off when I passed it around to show something with buttons on the side.

Love the keys on the back as well! Took me a few days, but it's second nature now.

Is my power button broken?

Sigh...
Whenever I press my power button, I have to press it directly in the middle to get the screen to turn on. If I press the button towards the edge (left or right) the button just pushes down (becomes flush with the phone frame) and there is no click and the screen doesn't turn on. Not being picky, I just have to press the button more than 3-4 times and it feels loose.
Is anyone else's phone like this? Would help if someone could post a picture of the plastic tab underneath their power button. It feels like mine is broken.
I dunno about you but sometimes my power button won't even work. I have to take the case off, remove the battery, put it back in, then restart the phone to get it to work again. Kinda strange...
i was thinking i had the same issue earlier, then i just reseated the back and now all is well... now if i can get the rubberized black case from sprint i will be in full effect!
If you take the cover off, you will see that the button is a very small rubber and it lines up with the power button on the case, so you have to press it in the middle
So does this fix apply to power buttons that are really easily pressed too?

I've actually taken the case off and pressed the button to see if the phone would turn on. Yeah no go. It's like it locked up or something.
My evo 3d has a super sensitive power button.. it does not click at all. If I hold my phone in a land scape i accidentally turn it off if i even rub my finger over it. The design of the power button is terrible
I am exchanging this phone tomorrow hopefully I wont have any further issues

I got a case off eBay that has the power button recessed...paid $6 Also managed to get a 32 GB SD Card for $21
My mom's is super sensitive too and is pressed when holding in landscape, also has no click. Should she take it back or has anyone opened the back and fixed it?

Reason I really want to know is cause she got one and gave her ogevo to my sister and she misses her og. So I talked her into trading me her 3vo for my og.

My power button was driving ne crazy. I couldn't get it to work consistently when trying to turn the screen off, and I would sometimes get the reboot/power off confirmation box while using the phone, like the button was somehow being held down.
I found that if I pulled the top left corner of the back from the fully locked position just slightly, the button worked much better.
By this afternoon, I was tired of repositioning the back every time I took the phone out of my pocket. I went to a Sprint store, and they tried a new back. That didn't solve the problem, so they swapped my device for a new one. Problem is 100% better now. Feels great now and works perfectly.

I had the same problem with mine. Got it home from just buying it and couldn't turn it back on. Thought the battery was dead so plugged it in and presto, it came on with a decent charge still on it. Then I couldn't turn it off or put it into sleep mode. Took it back to the store 1 hour after buying it. RS exchanged it immediately, so no issue there. The new one had a definite click to the power switch where the first one had no click at all. Working great so fa.
Cool, I'm gonna get her to take it back before we switch then. Thanks guys

Hands Down Must Have App

This will save your power button. This app uses motion detected by your proximity sensor to turn your phone on.
Just installed it and it works awesome. Works so good you can just hold your phone and wiggle your thumb in front of the sensor and it turns on. All with the same hand
Here is the link to it in the market. Enjoy
https://market.android.com/details?id=net.maicas.android.wsleep
Hit up my THANKS if you liked it.
Hmm... I'm giving this a try now. I'm worried how it will function in my pocket. Also, I'm more comfortable using my phone in my right hand.and reaching the sensor with the right hand isn't totally comfortable. But, I'll play with it and see how I like it. Cool app anyways. So thanks!

Don't know. Only had it installed for a couple of hours.
Been testing this for a while now. Doesn't use any battery so that's awesome.
I had to use this on my O.G. Evo because i had worn out the power button from flashing too much. Seems like it worked ok but at times it would lock up where I couldnt get it to turn the phone on to save my life. Ofcurse I'm sure they've gone thru plenty of updates since then.

That's what I use but it doesn't have the option to turn the screen on by tapping the sensor. I might have to check this other one out.
Why do I need to "save" my power button? That doesn't make sense, lol. As long as you're not bashing the power button to turn it on you're fine..
Tried out all ways to reliably trigger the prox sensor with one hand.
Finally fingered it out Holding the phone in my left hand, I can use my forefinger to double tap the edge of the phone just over the prox switch.
I don't have any real use for this....but it is pretty cool!
A pretty slick maneuver I found was to quick draw from my holster, then hold the phone towards the bottom, then do a quick double swipe over your sleeve then your unlocking thumb is in the right place!

This is for people who'd rather rub the paint off the area around their prox sensor than wear out the power button. Nice to have choices, I must admit!

This would be helpful for the seidio extended battery since the power button doesn't really work

Wouldn't the difference be that you have to just lightly tap the proximity sensor while you have to actually press down on the power button? I don't foresee any paint rubbing off around the sensor.

Save the Power button but totally drain your power. Battery power.
No way I'm running an app that will force my sensors to be on at all times.
I've been using this for a few hours now and it doesn't seem to be draining the battery.

Is their a reason for the volume button?

I mean honestly why couldn't they have left the volume button off and put another port or speaker or something! Honestly they could have integrated the volume nicely into their quick settings bar!
Or better yet made the a piece of the bezel with capacitive volume buttons...
I think they volume buttons where a waste of time on asus's part!
I know they are nice to have but common be different!
Also does this have a orientation lock switch?
A side note I really live ICS's spell check and copy and paste its so much nicer than gingerbread! Except its not the same through out like Gmail for example is different the the browser which bugs me! Lol

Let's hope it is better than your PC36100
I was disappointed at first about the single speaker, however I've remedied this with some Logitech bluetooth speakers. The lack of a volume button is one of my only gripes with my Kindle Fire, so yes I think it is absolutely necessary to have a button.
I'd be willing to bet, that if they added an extra speaker, and left off the volume control, that I'd be reading a thread titled "Is there a reason for the extra speaker"... blah blah blah they could have put a volume button in its place, and other nonsense.
because otherwise every single app would need to add some way of adjusting volume in the app?
waste of time and space? I doubt having a volume rocker wastes much of either.
Also, volume rocker needed to boot into that fast boot mode or whatever. If device is soft bricked, it needs hardware button combination of volume and power to bring it into that mode to fix the issue or hard reset to take back to factory defaults/rom.

what dock bar? When you are playing shadowgun on your prime you expect there to be a dock bar so you can adjust the volume? It doesn't work like that and would look really bad if it did
Your point is interesting. Amazon chose not to put hardware volume on the Kindle Fire and that is one of the points that they are getting skewered on. So I am guessing that the software only volume control is in the minority. At least on Android devices.

Still I do not see why android needs any physical buttons...
Everything would looks so nice without them!
I see the need like you said to get to the restore and such as I use that often! All I see android needing is 1 power button but even that could be just like slide over like the back of the PS Vita!
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
I don't use the volume button much, I wish there would be an orientation lock which I use much more frequently than volume adjustment.
Also I don't quite like the HC/ICS way of copy/paste, you have to move far away from the text you just selected to press the copy button. I think it look cool but not intuitive.
I used to think the volume button wasn't important on a tablet, then I got shot in the knee with an arrow.

I think the volume rocker is needed. I find it very inconvenient if one needs to click the menu and adjust the volume every single time. I think its one of the reason why there are short cuts on you laptops that allows you to adjust the volume. For example if you are playing a first play shooter game and you want to adjust the volume, having to go into menu, change the volume will very likely get you killed.
And also, I think the reason Asus choose the single speaker instead two speaker is due to the size of the speaker. Instead of using two smaller mediocre speaker they chose to include one really good speaker which is bigger in size. Simply removing the volume rocker there wouldn't be enough space to add that second speaker. And also there's problem with the cost.

Sick of your click buttons home row on your x2?

Well, for me, the only thing that made my droidx2 not perfect, was the home row of buttons. I always figured, why ruin the touchscreen experience with a clicking button thats basically a small slit. Now dont get me wrong, i dont mind buttons like on the charge, which were huge and pretty nice to press. But the ones on the dx2 and X1 were kind of a let down. So, i searched around and got hold of an app called SoftKeys, and i feel like even though it might be an extra click to bring up the buttons, i dont have to shift my hands to firmly press the buttons anymore, giving me much more fluid use of my phone. Hope this comes of use to anyone else sick of their buttons!
I attached some pics of them running on my phone, so you can see that it persists as a little button to press on, that you call in the home row.
This is pretty sweet. I will have to download and try it out. The softkeys are the worst on these phone. I much prefer to have them as a touch screen extension. Plus, when you are laying in bed at night surfing XDA on your DX2 and your spouse in sleeping so soundly next to you, the CLICK sound that the back button makes after you are done reading a post could easily disrupt the ZZZ's. Just me? lol
I'll come back and let you know how I like it.
PS: What is that battery widget on your homescreen. I NEED IT!
The battery meter im using is called battery monitor widget ver 2.0.6. and my gf is a light sleeper so i am in that boat lol.
Thanks! I've been using one but I'd rather have a widget than have it hanging out in my notification bar.

Volume down sticking on VZW G2

Is anyone else having this issue? If I try to press the "volume down" physical button, if you're applying any "downward" pressure, like say sliding your finger off it, the edge sticks under the physical case and it stays held down. Not sure if this is worth returning it for, but I can see it being a pain if it gets worse. It happened last night and took me a few seconds to figure out why the display wasn't leaving the screen.

Actually, now that I tested more, if you press either vol up / down on their "edge" (where the + and - symbols are) they both stick pretty easily. Not sure I like this at all. You don't even have to press hard, just press on the edge even with a fingernail. They almost feel like individual rockers more than buttons.
They are rockers for sure. Mine doesn't get stuck when using them thank goodness. I think it feels better with the buttons like that. Imo. I love the buttons on the back and I think I'm the minority in this

I like them there, I just don't like how easy they are getting stuck if you press them on the edges. Might just be a bad model, I'll have to stop by the store later.
I hadn't experienced it in daily use but I can make them stick if I press down on the edge like you mention above. I don't usually press it that way so I'm not too concerned.
I've tried to press the buttons every way possible and mine don't stick at all. Maybe exchange for a new device?

This is an issue with the Verizon model. From the looks of your signature, you don't have a Verizon model, thus you're not going to experience this issue. :good:
