[Q] I want to go back to a GB ROM, but need some ICS/JB features - please advise - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I only now use my X10 as my secondary phone - I use it when I go running to track my running stats with the GPS etc, so that if I drop it and break it, it's not a big deal!
For the last few months I've been using this AOSP 4.2.2 ROM on there:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2197387
I think this ROM is amazing, but it does have a tendency to slow down to a crawl when I am out and running my Endomondo running app.
So I have decided I want a Gingerbread ROM again, probably Feralabs, but there are some features in ICS/JB that I was wondering if had been ported across?
Specifically, I want to be able to add the custom message to the home screen. I like this feature, as I can put my name and phone number in there in case I do lose the phone and anyone finds it (obviously relying on the fact that they wish to return it to me!!)
Also, I want the WiFi icon in the toolbar to have the activity arrows. In GB ROMs I've used, it's always just a static icon.
Is there any Gingerbread ROM which has a launcher which supports these two functions?
Many thanks for any advice.
Alex

Bump....nothing??

Have both those features on my XPERIA S, but don't know of any XPERIA X10i GB ROM that has those features.... and I've tried a few.

Thanks for the reply
Likewise, I also have those features on the Xperia S, but in JellyBean.
The wifi one sounds silly, but I actually rely on the activity arrows a lot as my wifi plays up so often. Whereas in Gingerbread is just sits there with the icon and you have no idea if data is being sent or received.
The message on the homescreen feature I always use in ICS/JB, it's a shame it appears it cannot be done in GB ROMs.

Not that is can't be done, just that I don't know of any GB ROM that has it.
Check X10 themes and Apps posts, you never know your luck.

[Q] Quick questions re stock ROM

New owner of an SG2, which I'm liking so far. Am coming from N1 Cyanogenmod.
At present I've rooted my phone and am running the stock rom with Launcher Pro.
I'm liking a bunch of the features of the stock rom (well trying them out) and am deciding whether I keep the stock rom or move to a custom rom.
I do have a few questions about the stock rom, which I wonder can be answered here:
- With the pull down menu you have the options of wifi, bluetooth etc in the status bar. Is there anyway of changing these options (for example want to remove bluetooth).
- With the dialler, once I make a call it goes into a screen with a bunch of options, like, save contact, etc. Is there anyway of avoiding this screen and going straight to home? (incidentally you are given the option of "voice call". Is this something provided by your network or another service?)
- Autorotate. Is it possible to NOT have it working on the homescreen, but available in your apps?
In relation to custom rom, what do you guys reckon is as close to stock as possible, but with a bit more customisation. I'm guessing a custom rom would be able to deal with most of my queries.
1) majority of roms have that bar modified where you can slide it across and have upto 12 triggers, although you can't really remove them. However with cm7 and miui you can customize that bar to your hearts content.
2) no idea
3) look in the launcher pro settings, you should be able to set it there so it doesn't auto rotate
Give cm7 a try.

Cheers mate. Was using CM7 fine with my N1, guess just wanted to mix it up a bit. There are a bunch of features I do like about the stock rom though.
I'll run it for another week and then may give MIUI a go.
Checkout jkay mods and themes for stock roms in the theme section.
Can do basically what you want Plus more.
Also many launchers (home screens) can set whether to auto rotate. Set it to off in launcher and leave the system auto rotate on.

Thanks, will have a play with the custom themes.
Also, I presume, if I install MIUI or Cyanogenmod, I could still install the Samsung specific apks?

No, you can not install any Samsung apps on CM. (May be you're thinking you like the stock browser so you want to use it on CM, but you can not).

Sorry for the newb qustions, but is this because of the ROM itself?

Cheers mate. I note you are using GingerMod, may give that a try as it seems to be the AOSP, with the ability to add certain TW apps.

Yes. CM7 and MIUI are build from scratch and doesn't contain anything related to Samsung. So unlike stcok based custom roms, these two roms doesn't support Samsung apps.

Well, the reason you wanted to try is exactly the reason why so many users love GingerMod rom. It has some good apps from Samsung, like the gpu accelerated browser, camera app, fm radio. Rest 95 % is aosp.
So it's pure google experience,no Samsung bloatware, and we can still enjoy some of the real good apps Samsung made.

heh, would love a cyan-samsung bastard child port. If only I had the skills to do that.
Love the ability with Cyan to tweak a whole bunch of settings, but am liking quite a few of the Samsung apps.
Will look into GingerMod as it may be a good compromise.

There is one more reason why i personally like GingerMod.
It is 99% (or 100%) bug free. Infact, i find it more stable than any official firmware.

Which ROM will make me feel fuzzy inside?

Hey guys,
I'm still trying to get my SGS2 figured out... I've got it set up with GoLauncher and GoLocker and I love the look and setup etc but I would love to know what ROM people suggest.. I've read all the guides on how to flash custom ROMs, what apps can be frozen etc etc. but I don't know which ROM to go with because I'm not sure if they will change the look and feel of the phone.. This is what I want the ROM to do:
- I want to keep the current look and setout of apps/home screen etc
- Something quick and easy on the battery
- To be able to get rid of all the apps I don't use
I only really use SMS, Phone, Email, Camera, Facebook and Shazam. Nothing complicated really
Thanks in advance for your suggestions! Any advice is appreciated.
Oh boy, it's going to be fun on these forums today.
I use MIUI, it's based on CyanogenMod so there is no bloatware, very customizable, very fast and very efficient battery usage with the Android OS battery bug fixed.
Or use CyanogenMod 7 and use your same configuration of GoLauncher and stuff.
CriskeloROM is if you want to have a very customizable Samsung based ROM.
Rooted stock. Yes, I'm serious.

Sorry mate, the best I could find was a thread which highly suggested Villain ROM but the thread was 6 months old, and I wasn't sure if it changes your home screen and everything.

I definitely won't be going for CriskeloROM then
So will MIUI change the whole look of my phone or can I keep my current look? And what's the difference between it and CyanogenMod 7?
Sorry if the questions sound basic to you guys!
Cheers
CriskeloROM is like stock Samsung ROM with extra added features like CRT on, off, ICS animations, etc...if you want Samsung stuff, and your current UI looks, go with CriskeloROM, I used to use it until I switched to MIUI.
MIUI is different from CyanogenMod, because it has a different look and feel with all MIUI's thousand's of themes and you can make your phone so customized with different boot animations, lock screen layouts, etc.
CyanogenMod is stock Android, with nothing on it and you can put any look on it. MIUI has it's own launcher which is part of the entire theming architecture it comes with, which integrates every aspect of the UI with the launcher, lock screen, and other MIUI apps so that one app controls all.
OK I checked out the MIUI website and I don't really want to change the look so I'll rule that out.
Which is fastest out of CyanogenMod and CriskeloROM? I don't care about Samsung apps (assuming phone + sms etc aren't included? I'm guessing you mean the social hub, music hub etc etc, right?)
Try out CyanogenMod out then, its fastest and speediest because it has absolutely no bloatware. Try it out, there's no harm trying

Try checkrom. Its stock based but has an kitchen app with everything you need to customize the rom the way you want..All bloatware are removed and the kitchen is a must....Or try Hyperdroid...Another good rom and the team are great and they give great support...Those are the two roms that i would suggest
I use checkrom and nothing else.
But for you I would suggest you just root your phone with cf root, install titanium backup and use it to freeze or delete the apps you don't want.

I would suggest going through android development threads and looking at the features, screenshots and videos and compare, then root, make a nand backup and flash as many roms as you like until you find the one you want to stay with

Insanity II, it's based on CM7 and it only has the basic features. Superfast and looks like stock Android. Have fun.

Thanks heaps, I just used cf-root and then froze heaps of unused apps with Titanium Backup Pro, and I have saved a lot of RAM in doing so! I read somewhere there is a battery fix you can apply when you've rooted your phone but can't find it now.. Does anyone know what it's called?
And are there any other essentials to install now that I've got the phone rooted? Maybe the SetCPU program? I'm guessing that would save a lot of battery without sacrificing performance too much, right??
Cheers!
Just flash any Samsung based ROM (I like Androidema), flash Chainfire's Kernel for simplicity and you're set.

[Q] How customizable is stock with root?

After flashing all over the place for the past few months, I opted to go back to the oldest nandroid I have, which is 2.3.4, UCKK6 and my kernel is 2.6.35.7_ZedomaxStockKernel. (I like most of the ROMs I've tried, but my game data would for some reason go missing, and it's quite a pain to start playing a game from scratch every 6 or 7 days - so I figured I'd get off ICS for a while).
It's all well and good and everything, but there are a few custom ROM features that I liked. For example: the 14-toggle menu, which allowed long-pressing on a particular toggle to go to the related settings menu. I also wouldn't mind ridding myself of the home button lag (that was fixed with that dreadful 2.3.6 OTA update). I don't use voice commands very often, since they often fail to do what I ask of them.
So anyway, can I flash mods through CWM like I can on a custom ROM? Can I flash different kernels and scripts safely? Some of the mods I've seen have only been developed for certain ROMs, if I remember correctly, so obviously I'll be unable to use those. If it comes down to it, I would be willing to flash a stock-based ROM, so long as the wifi doesn't murder my phone and/or it's not deodexed (I don't really care for theming and the phone seems smoother(?) when it's not deodexed).
Sounds like you would like Unnamed 1.3.2 It's based off of UCKH7. It looks exactly like stock and has the toggles you want in the dropdown window. I think there is a mod here that will take away the home button lag.
I am on Unnamed 2.2.1 that is based on UCKK6 but lot of people report the wifi drain bug with KK6. I somehow managed to not get that and it runs fine for me.
Hope you find what you are looking for.

This. +1 . Unnamed's older version is what I always flash back to for an awesome stock experience. Also I believe Serendipity was based on 2.3.4 as well but don't quote me on that its been a long time.

A few qns on ICS

Just a few qns on ICS.
1) On ICS, I notice when on WCDMA mode, the H icon does not go down to 3G icon when there is no data flow, unlike GB where it is mostly at 3G and only when there is data processing then it moves up to H. Is this normal or is it just my phone?
2) Getting my phone back from servicing and really dislike the ICS experience. Stupid scrolling, changing font doesn't change the font in all applications (like in tweetdeck and whatsapp) etc makes me want to roll back to GB the moment i get my phone back. However one thing I will miss is the ICS lockscreen (the circle one similar to the Note). Back when I was using XWLA4 on Checkrom it had a similar circle lockscreen. Is it the stock lockscreen or is that a mod from Checkrom? The slide lockscreen is pretty terrible IMO.
Gonna keep my phone stock as I'm too busy and lazy to meddle with all the rooting stuff anymore. So I just want a good slick fully stock GB rom and I'm not gonna touch any more flashing till I change my phone. Coming from Singapore using an international i9100, it makes no difference if I use some other firmware version (XWLA4 eg) as opposed to the Singapore-tailored DXKI1 etc ROMs right?
Thanks!

[XPU] Stock Or Rom?

I've Been Flashing Roms For A While, From ICS To JB 4.3.
I Like the Broad Amount Of Features And Customization Of Roms, Yet I Really Need Something That Will Work.
The 1st Rom That Did Work In The JB Side Of Things Was @bibhu059 's Complete JB Experience, Fast, No Annoying Blur At The Bottom Of The Screen In SD Video Watching For Youtube (I'm A Big Watcher Of Youtube Videos By The Way) And Sonys Stock Being Something I Like..
Then I Went Back To CyanogenMod With 10.2 By @DroidModderXtreme. Its A Good Experience And If I Decide To Go To Stock, Id Wait For A Stable Version Or Another Flavour Of 4.3 With His ParanoidAndroid Coming Soon.
So Basically I Need A Good User Interface Experience (I Hated Sonys JB), Fast And Smooth, And Fully Working Functions, Yet I'd Like To Be Able To Use A Custom Launcher (Being Action Launcher Pro As It Lets You Use Icon Packs And Has A Good Interface). Also, If I Were To Go Back To Stock, Id Still Be Rooting And Maybe Getting CWM..
What Do You Guys Think, Stock W/Root Or A Custom Rom. If You Think Custom Roms Are Better, Any Recommendations? Thanks.
(Also, Sorry For Weird Layout Its How I Like To Type, Also Use Shift For Every Word So I Have An Uppercase In Every Word)
