[TOOL] Moto X Toolkit v1.4.4 [Backup/Restore,Drivers,Return to stock,Root,Bootani] - Moto X Android Development

Moto X Toolkit v1.4.4
I thought it would be helpful to have a quick and easy way to complete some common tasks on the Moto X, so I wrote this toolkit. If you run into any issues or have suggestions for changes, please let me know. Just wanted to get this out there for others to use if they would like.

Toolkit won't open on Windows 7/8
Right click the icon>Properties>Compatibility>Check mark Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows XP (Service Pack 3) and Check mark Run this program as an administrator.
Earpiece LED doesn't work after reboot
This will be fixed in the next update. Just enable it through the toolkit again after reboot.
ADB needs root for this toolkit to make changes for you, if you open the toolkit, you can check ADB root under Option 15. If ADB does not have root, you will need to install an app called adbd Insecure - Google it.

Useful. Thanks!

I will look into it, wanted to get this out into the world first, and will continue to see what I can add and improve. Thanks for the suggestion.

Thanks for your toolkit. This will be very helpful when I get my moto x in a few weeks!

Fixed the issue with the download link not working in IE10.

This won't be very useful until the actual rooting is included as an option in the toolkit. As soon as that functionality comes I'll be on board!

That is your opinion and you are entitled to have it. But my opinion and others would probably disagree. The root method for a carrier locked moto x is just an app install and then you open the app, not really needed to be added to the the toolkit. You could certainly use the toolkit to install the app and then go open the app on your phone. If you have a moto x that is able to be bootloader unlocked, you could use my tool to install a custom recovery and then install root through the recovery. So, as you can see, we have a difference of opinion when it comes to how useful this toolkit is. There are also things that can be done with the toolkit that do not require root at all.

Though I agree that this toolkit could be useful to a novice Andriod user, an experienced user would find little use to it (I find if easier to run adb/fastboot commands on my pshell.
The things that would make me use a toolkit are capabilities to 1. Root it 2. Flash a ROM 3. Flash specific images (apps, modem etc). 4. Unlock bootloader.
You say rooting is just about installing an APK and running it. But I would reverse engineer it or talk to the person who made the apk and ask him to extend it (if not done already) to accept parameters to the intent so that I could launch the intent directly from the toolkit.

Again, everyone has their opinion about how something can be made or used. This is made for anyone that would like to use it, novice or otherwise. If you don't want to use, then don't. If you feel there is a need for a toolkit that does what you want it to do, you are more than welcome to make one, and if you so choose, you can share it with the community. As long as someone is getting the use they want out of it, that shouldn't have any effect on you.
I am always looking for a way to update and improve on what I have, and do so in the spare time that I have.

As I feared, it was taken in the wrong way. I have seen our thread on Droid DNA (I own that phone too) and I know it has option to flash radio and hboot and such. I was merely talking about what I did because I felt you seemed unwelcome to the idea to have an option to root the phone implying it was simple enough already!
Anyways, cheers and keep up the good work!

I don't think it was taken the wrong way. I am not unwelcome to the option of root, just suggesting how the toolkit could be used to obtain root without the specific option.
I appreciate your support.

Verizon OTA kills root. If you have taken it, you can no longer root. If you have not taken the OTA then there are ways to keep root, and there is more information about that here

I have posted an updated version of the toolkit in the 2nd post v1.1.0. You can see the changes in the OP. Enjoy!

Thanks for the time you put in for this Toolkit! It would be awesome, if there was a prompt to backup/restore IMEI's too. (more for Samsung's).

works with other carrier, to return to stock?
I have a XT1058 on Movistar carrier and i have a bootloop after the ota update released today.

So I picked up a moto x this morning. I updated to 4.2.2. Went home to root this sucker with the toolkit and am having issues. Drivers are installed, I choose to download and install pwnmymoto. I get a google verify potential dangerous app screen. I agree to install and the toolkit comes back as INSTALL_PARSE_FAILED_UNEXPECTED_EXCEPTION. I get the same thing if i go into setting and turn off the "verify apps".
Am I screwed for now?

[HOW TO] ROOT HTC RUBY / AMAZE 4G

This is a very simple device to root.
However if you root this device it will likely void your warranty.
There is no current method of obtaining S-OFF, so don't ask!
Requirements:
PC
Phone
USB Cable
External SDCARD (optional but highly recommended)
Internet Connection
HTC Drivers
Battery with a charge of over 50%
Ability to read
Ability to follow directions
Then you must view the following video!
If you meet these requirements then proceed to post #2.
Step #2 - Unlocking your bootloader
Copied from this thread by Revolution
Go to HTCDev.com
Make a account , here then go to this link and follow all instruction's , but make sure you go to this link , it don't show us as a supported device but this work's for all device's me & crackeyes have tried this .
Go to this link after that : here , follow all the step's , below will be my version .
1) Remove and reinsert the battery.

2) Press Volume Down and Power to start the device into Bootloader mode.
3) Use the Volume buttons to select up or down. Highlight Fastboot and press the Power button.
4) Connect the device to the computer via a usb cable
5) Make a folder in c:\ called Android & then input the file's from your android SDK their , such as
adb.exe
AdbWinApi.dll
fastboot.exe
6) Open up command prompt. ( Start > Run > Type CMD,). The window that appears is called Command Prompt.
7) Navigate to where you unzipped the ZIP file and go to the folder you just created (For Example: If you created the folder in C:\Android, then you would type in Command Prompt: cd c:\Android).
8) Type in Command Prompt: fastboot oem get_identifier_token.
9) You will see a long block of text. Copy and paste this text into the the token field below (in the command prompt: Right Click > Mark > highlight the block of text > Right click to copy).
10) Paste this string of text into the token field and hit Submit in order to receive your unlock code binary file. You will receive this information in your email.
Example:
11) On the bottom of http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/unlock-instructions/page-3 , please input your result's & if it say's failed keep on trying & it will go threw .
Straight from HTCDev.com , & NOTE : THIS WILL VOID YOUR WARRENTY
You are about to start the process of unlocking your device. Unlocking your device allows you to install custom Operating Systems (“OS”) onto your device. Custom OS’s are not tested as thoroughly as your original OS, and unlocking your device may void all or parts of your warranty. HTC disclaims any and all liability for proper functioning of your device after the bootloader has been unlocked and for data lost in the unlocking process. To prevent unauthorized access to your data, unlocking the bootloader will delete all personal data from your device including applications, text messages and personalized settings.

Once you have unlocked your bootloader you can make changes to your /system partition.
The majority of you will probably never need to do this. This is because most developers use flashable zip files that will do everything for you. These files are flashed from Recovery Mode.
Let's move on to step #3
Step #3 - Installing Custom Recovery
Now that you have unlocked your bootloader you can now obtain root.
The easiest way to do this would be by installing a custom recovery.
I created a simple bat script that should update your recovery for you.
Boot up your phone and connect it to your computer by usb cable.
Go to Settings --> Applications --> Development.
Check USB debugging.
Unzip the attached file and run the Flash.bat file as Administrator.
Your phone should reboot and go to a white screen.
It should update the recovery for you automatically and reboot.
Now you should have yourself a custom recovery.
If by chance you decide that you would like to revert to the custom recovery then use the same technique with the STOCK_RECOVERY_FLASHER.zip file.
If a .bat script isn't your thing then try this thread: [TOOL] HTC Amaze 4G All-In-One Toolkit by Hasoon2000
Step #4 - ROOTING!
Now that you have your custom recovery installed it's time to flash root onto your phone.
Download a custom rom from the Development section or the HTC Amaze ROM Bible and store the zip onto your external sdcard.
If you do not want a custom rom but just want root simply download the attached Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip file.
If you do not have an external sdcard then store it onto your internal sdcard.
The custom recovery from step #3 will default to an external sdcard if it's detected.
If the custom recovery from step #3 does not detect an external sdcard then it should default to your internal.
Now there are a couple different ways to reboot to recovery. The best way is to open the command prompt up and navigate to either directories from posts 1 or 2 that contains the adb.exe file.
For example this is from post #2.
If you stored it to your desktop directory then it would be something like:
C:\Users\Binary100100\Desktop\RecoveryInstallerForNoobs
so you may have to enter:
cd Desktop\RecoveryInstallerForNoobs
Now enter "dir" into the command prompt and press Enter and you should see something like:
c:\Users\Binary100100\Desktop\RecoveryInstallerForNoobs>dir
Volume in drive C has no label.
Volume Serial Number is 4850-996B
Directory of c:\Users\Binary100100\Desktop\RecoveryInstallerForNoobs
01/03/2012 05:04 PM <DIR> .
01/03/2012 05:04 PM <DIR> ..
11/08/2011 02:50 PM 366,661 adb
11/08/2011 02:50 PM 410,942 adb.exe

As long as you see adb, adb.exe, adbWinApi.dl and AdbWinUsbApi.dll you should be good to go.
Now without leaving the command prompt enter:
adb reboot recovery
Your phone should reboot and you should be looking at your recovery.
If for whatever reason you couldn't get access to recovery then go back to bootloader mode.
Remove the battery and put it back in. This is to make sure the device is completely powered off. Hold the Volume Down button while pressing power to get back to hboot mode. Just like step #1. Now if you don't see Recovery in the list then select BOOTLOADER. You should now see RECOVERY. Select that and your phone should reboot to recovery from there. Now that I know you're in recovery... let's move on.
From here you can flash your custom rom or root files.
Use the volume rocker buttons to move the highlight up and down the menu and highlight "Install zip from sdcard" then press the power button to select.
Now "choose zip from sdcard" then press power button again.
Highlight the downloaded custom rom or the Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zipfile and press power again. From here I think you have the idea.
Select the appropriate zip file and press the power button to install.
Now you can go back and then select "reboot system now" and let your device boot up.
Check the app drawer and make sure you have an app called SuperUser. If you have this app then you now have root.
If you followed the instructions like you were supposed to you should be fully rooted and unlocked the full potential of your HTC Amaze 4G phone.
Feel free to post your questions and comments here in this thread.
PLEASE! don't send me private messages asking for help. I just spent two hours making this as simple as I could to save me from all of the help requests. If you have problems then post in this thread and make sure to reference the step that you're having issues with.
Example:

Which is exactly why I made it. Unfortunately the members that just got the device couldn't use the old PH85IMG.zip method because of the Main Version Older error and they couldn't use the tool that xboarder56 made because I had to remove it per request. I didn't want to make a tool that would do everything because then they would never learn for themselves. So I feel that this is a healthy balance.

I always encourage people to never stop learning.
When I see a script I like to open it up and see what's inside.
Knowing how things work is a great way to learn for yourself.
Before you know it, you'll be making guides like this! At the very least you'll be the A instead of the Q if you know what I mean.

I do not have a TF101 anymore, but it has been reported that you can root the latest ICS update via option 1. Do so at your own risk! And PLEASE don't flash recovery if you're not on a Prime. That option is ONLY for TF201's!!
THIS WILL NOT ROOT .21 AT THIS TIME!!
Introducing viperMOD PrimeTime! An automated rooting program for your Asus Transformer Prime TF201 (ICS or HC supported) and the Asus Transformer TF101. It is very simple and easy to use with extra features that other root methods don't have. Works on Prime's that lost root with the ICS OTA! Now, here is how it works...
Download the .zip
Plug in your Transformer and make sure to install the drivers located in the included .zip (unless you can already adb into your device, then no need for drivers)
Kill Asus Sync and Splashtop! - very important!!
Make sure you have NO OTHER ANDROID DEVICES connected via USB!
If on Linux, you may need to do "chmod a+x /path/to/primetime/primetime.sh" (no quotes)
Run the viperMOD PrimeTime.exe and choose an option.
After rooting, download OTA Root Keeper from the Market!
???
Profit?
It's as simple as that! I have tested this about 30 times (both rooting and unrooting) and it works just fine! I would HIGHLY recommend downloading Voodoo Root Keeper!! Any issues or questions, please feel free to post here! Enjoy your rooted Prime
Things you should NOT do!
Try to root with the Transformer in the dock
Use a USB extension cable
Not download OTA Root Keeper
Not follow directions

FAQ
Q. Do I need ADB?
A. Yes, but you don't need to set it up or anything. I have packaged it as part of the .exe and it should work just fine.
Q. Will I not be able to OTA?
A. No, rooting doesn't affect OTA whatsoever. It's actually reverse - OTA affects root. You will still get update notifications when updates drops, but you WILL loose root if you update. Download Voodoo Root Keeper to keep root if you take the next OTA! The only way rooting would possibly affect an OTA is if, once rooted, you delete the certificates and modify the build.prop (and other things) that don't allow the OTAs to come through.
Q. Will this work on ICS and/or HC?
A. Yes, it now supports both. The ICS root method may work on HC Prime's and TF101's but I haven't gotten reports on that yet.
Q. The program doesn't do anything! WTF?!
A. Did you enable USB Debugging like the program told you too? [Settings > Developer Options] I hope you also installed the drivers, since the program told you to do that too. Once that is all set, the program will continue. If you're still having issues, please try this:

3) Uncheck Launch ASUS Sync (Settings -> Accounts & sync)
PC (Windows 7 x64):
4) Connect Prime to PC via USB & drivers automatically installed. *Note: Prime is only visible under "Portable Devices" in Device Manager.
5) Download the ViperMod .zip for Windows from the OP.
6) In Device Manager, right click on Transformer Prime TF201 (under portable devices), and choose Update Driver Software.
7) Choose Browse My Computer for Driver Software.
8) Choose Let Me Pick A List of Device Drivers on My Computer
9) If you see MTP USB Device on the next screen under ASUS Android MTP Device, choose it and click next. If you don't see this, then maybe try selecting "Have Disk" and pointing to the drivers folder in ViperMod (MTP file perhaps??).
10) Windows will install driver and and you should now also see a separate tier under Device Manager labeled, ASUS Android Devices -> ASUS Android Composite ADB Interface. If you see this you are good to go and can run the adb vipermod root process.

If you still need help with the driver install, this video tutorial might help.
Q. Why add busybox and Superuser.apk to /system? I don't want that ****!
A. Sorry I can't please you. Busybox is important because it adds many commands to the device that it doesn't have (it doesn't have basic commands like 'copy' or 'grep' [a type of find]). When you install ROMs on other devices, you have busybox. It will be necessary to things I have coming down the pipe As far as Superuser getting installed to /system, you'd have to go out of your way to uninstall it. In /data, it's easy to uninstall and if you master reset, root wouldn't work because there is no app, upon reboot, that would manage apps requesting root access.

Glad to see you all on board and now all the former Prime detractors want to come back seeing how things changed so quickly for the better. can't wait to see what you guys come up with as far as ROMS, mods, tweaks, etc..
maybe come out with the Viper V-12 overclocking package. boost these 4 cores to 1.8-2Ghz a piece and gpu boost

Nicely.
I was very disappointed the other day by learning the encryption of the bootloader, and I almost canceled the pre-command of my TF Prime, and now thanks to you (JCase, -viperboy- and the others ), I will rooted my Prime.
Thank's again all.

That's not an issue anymore.. Asus is working on an unlock tool, similar to HTC!
Nice progress ahead!!!!!
NICE PROGRESS AHEAD!!!!! excellent tool, couldn't be simpler thanks Viper.
Coming from the incredible forums it's great to see you here too viper! And thanks for the program.
Awesome, after lurking in theseforums for 2 years and learning as much as I can about the android platform, rooting numerous devices, I feel like with the TFP that I finally have an opportunity to give back and tools like this are making this possible. Thanks to OP, and jcase and all those involved in this outstanding effort... Once that unlock tool shows up the game shall begin in force!

It sits there after doing what? Are you sure you have the drivers installed? That's probably why it is hanging.
Everyone else, thanks for the kind words! I had a cool suggestion for a new name for this from another user, do we think Primer is OK? I picked it just because you start with primer when you paint so I figured since you start with this tool before you can do other root stuff, the name was fitting. Feedback?

[GUIDE] Root, unlock, and install a custom firmware!

The aim of this guide is to enable you to install a custom firmware on your Optimus G while being as clear, accurate and succinct as possible. This guide is intended for use by Windows users with an AT&T Optimus G (AKA LGE970).
I've presented the following sections in a specific order for a reason: you need to root to unlock, and you need to unlock to install a custom firmware. If you're currently running what the manufacturer gave you, you need to start with rooting, then unlocking, then trying other firmwares. Be careful, good luck, and have fun!
How to "root" your Optimus G
(Optional if you have another means of un-RARing) Download and install 7-zip from here. You need this to open certain types of archives (specifically .rar, but you might also want to open .tar, .bz2, or other types of archives in the future). This program is supremely awesome in its ability to open almost any archive you throw at it. It's also unobtrusive and efficient.
Download and install LG USB Drivers from here. Without these drivers, your computer won't be able to effectively communicate with your phone. This is vital for the steps we will be taking.
Enable USB debugging by going to Settings->(General)->Developer options" and checking the box next to "USB debugging." You will get warnings. You can probably ignore them. This setting will allow you to run commands on your phone from your computer (via USB). For more info on the Android Debug Bridge, click here.
Download and extract (using 7-zip (or whatever)) the root exploit from here.
Connect your phone to the computer with your USB cable.
Put the phone into "Charge Only" mode at Settings->General->PC connection->USB connection type
Open CurrentRoot.bat and follow its prompts. You will need to change from "Charge Only" to "Media sync (MTP)" mode. The setting is in the same place.
Run SuperSU (now in your apps drawer) it and make sure it works. This program allows others to gain access to superuser privileges. For more info on rooting and what kind of stuff it lets you do, click here and/or use Google.
If that didn't work for you, try following instructions from the thread where this root method came from.
How to unlock the bootloader
The bootloader is the first program your phone runs and its main job is to load the operating system. The stock bootloader is locked and will only run versions of Android that LG and AT&T want it to. Since our goal is to install and run custom firmwares, we must circumvent this locked bootloader. Luckily, thecubed and Shellnut2 have found a way to do this for us. What you want to do is buy Shelnutt's app. There are several reasons you should throw down some cash on this:
It's way easy to use
It'll make backups of your stock recovery/bootloader for you, it'll also make restoring these backups easy
The money is for a good cause
If you're still confused, visit thecubed's thread. He is the man, thank him a billion times. Then thank him again for being a nice guy.
For the convenience of those interested, here is the more laborious/error prone/manual way to unlock (NOTE: this method does NOT work if you've updated to Jelly Bean, you need to use the app):
If you haven't already, download and install 7-Zip and the LG USB drivers, and make sure you have USB Debugging turned on (see above).
Download the latest version of the bootloader unlock here (latest version has the highest version number).
Ensure that your screen is on and unlocked (I'd go to "Settings->Display->Screen timeout" and set the timeout to never to make sure the screen doesn't go off during this process). Your screen must remain on because SuperSU will ask you to grant superuser privileges to the unlock script and you want to be able to tap "Yes" when the time comes.
Connect your phone to the computer with your USB cable, and run the freegee.bat script in extracted files on your computer. Do NOT run this script as administrator. The install will fail if you do. Follow the prompts. You can ignore "No space left on the device" errors, but "adb.exe not found" or "tar: invalid magic" errors are not negligible and indicate either you skipping a step, a funky download, or something very bad.
Once the script finishes, make sure you have a populated "backups" folder in the folder where freegee.bat lives. The backups folder contains your original stock/locked bootloader, which you might want if you ever want to revert to stock.
If you're sure the script ran successfully, power off the phone. Next, hold down the power and volume up keys simultaneously to enter fastboot mode. You should see a screen that looks like this:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
In fastboot mode, there is a menu, but it's hidden. To navigate it, remember that volume up moves the cursor up, volume down moves it down, and power selects the currently highlighted option. The options are, in order:
Start - boot the phone normally [highlighted by default]
Restart Bootloader - reboot into bootloader
Recovery Mode - enter ClockworkMod recovery (more on this later)
Power Off - (duh)
Here is a video of thecubed showing you how to get to ClockworkMod from the bootloader (like a boss):
Using Team Win Recovery Project
Team Win Recovery Project (AKA TWRP) is a recovery, which basically allows you to install new firmwares and apply updates/modifications to already-installed firmwares (and a bunch of other things, like mounting and formatting portions of your phone's memory). It is the default recovery option when you use the Freegee app to unlock your phone (the other is Clockworkmod, which is so similar I won't be writing a separate guide on how to use it). Navigating TWRP is fairly self explanatory. Many great guides on how to use TWRP have been written and can be found via Google. Here is the first search result that came up for me. It's a pretty good guide.
One thing I will vehemently recommend is that you make a backup every time you install a new firmware. Personally, I backup apps and texts with Titanium Backup and my current firmware via TWRP (the linked guide explains how to make a backup in TWRP). Backups are a good idea and people should always make them. ALWAYS.
Installing custom firmwares
Follow the firmware author's instructions EXACTLY. These guys know what they are doing, certainly more than you or I. Check out the development threads for ROMs to try out.
Note: Be sure that if you are installing ROMs that require the Jelly Bean OTA update that you have taken that update.
There are two ways to do this: receive the update as intended (Over The Air) or use LGNPST (guide on using that under FAQ 3.a of this post) or autoprime's awesome tool, TeenyBin.
FAQs
How do I upgrade FreeGee? The easiest thing to do is simply install the new version of FreeGee the way you did the old one. It will work. Make sure you keep your original locked bootloader in a different, safe place though, just in case you ever want to revert to stock (if you try to return your phone, for example).
How do I disable that pesky OTA update notification? This comes courtesy of shawnchalfant and adfurgerson (visit ad's thread for more details): go into Titanium Backup and freeze the following programs: com.lge.lgfota.permission 4.0.4-91f513f88d AND com.lge.omadmclient 3.2.21
How can I re-lock and un-root my phone?
How to LGNPST to restore a factory image.
Obtain the following files: AutoLGNPST-tSilenzio.zip (available on IRC), and the firmware. Unzip AutoLGNPST-tSilenzio.zip and follow the instructions in "READ ME FIRST.txt" (mad props to tSilenzio for automating this process).
Here's the laborious/error prone/manual method for LGNPST-ing back to stock.
You need to obtain the following files: LGNPST-PhantomPhreak53.zip, LGNPST_ACG_2.2.3_Lab.zip, and the firmware. Follow the following steps (please note: I am less experienced with this process and find it much more tedious. Also, IMHO, I don't think the people you're returning the phone to will care if you leave some minor traces of your unlocking shenanigans. I think the process above this is more than sufficient and simpler). Credits go to Jhoopes517 for this process, he showed me how to do it in his thread.
(Install LG USB drivers)
Extract LGNPST_ACG_2.2.3_Lab.zip, run the installer. Open file explorer to C:\Program Files\LG Electronics\LGNPST and replace the current LGNPST_ACG.exe with the one in the extracted folder (if you are on a 64-bit version of windows, go to C:\Program Files (x86)\LG Electronics\LGNPST)
Extract LGNPST-PhantomPhreak53.zip and run LGNPST_GenericModels_Ver_5_0_12_0.exe and then run LGNPST_Components_Ver_5_0_20_0.exe
In file exlorer, navigate to C:\LG Electronics\LGNPST and copy over the "Models" folder from the extracted Phantom zip folder
Run cmd as administrator and execute the following
Code:
regsvr32 "C:\LG Electronics\LGNPST\Models\LGNPST_LS970.dll"
Extract LGE970AT-01-V20j-310-410-MAR-08-2013.zip and change the extension of the .tot file to .bin
Connect phone to computer, power off, and then power on, holding down the power button and both volume buttons
Run the newly replaced LGNPST_ACG.exe from step 2. Select the DLL from step 5 and the .bin from step 6.
Press Start
If LGNPST errors out at 85%, turn your phone off and hold the power button until the phone powers on, then release. DO NOT disconnect the cable before LGNPST is done doing its thing. Your phone may reboot. This is OK.
(If you are using Shelnutt's app, simply use the button in the app to re-lock and install the stock stuff).
Here's the laborious/error prone/manual method for re-locking the phone and installing the stock recovery/bootloader/kernel.
Remember the backups of the locked bootloader that you kept? You're going to need them. Obviously, you'll need USB Debugging enabled and LG USB drivers installed. Copy them to your phone's "Internal Storage" in a folder, in this example it's called "backups." Connect the phone to your computer via USB, open a command line (cmd) and type the following:
Code:
cd C:/some/folder/where/you/have/adb.exe/eg/your/freegee/download
adb shell
su
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/recovery
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/boot
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/aboot
dd if=/sdcard/backups/aboot-att-backup.img of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/aboot
dd if=/sdcard/recovery-att-backup of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/recovery
dd if=/sdcard/boot-att-backup.img of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/boot
dd basically copies from the if= location and writes to the of= location. The first three dd steps write a bunch of zeros to the recovery, boot, and aboot partitons, the last three write the backups to aboot, recovery, and boot. If you want to know more, read all about dd here and/or Google. If you lost your backups, you can try writing mine.
Now you've restored the stock bootloader and recovery, but your phone is still rooted. To unroot it, open SuperSU, go to its settings, and tap "Full unroot." Do a factory reset (Settings->General->Backup & reset->Factory data reset) and you should be good to return the phone to AT&T (or whatever).
Be careful with these last two methods if you have removed any bloatware or installed a custom firmware, you may prefer to LGNPST back to stock (LGNPST is almost always a safe way to return to stock).
blenkows said:
Haha I wish I had seen this earlier. I had screenshots before and after so I could see exactly what was removed but I had just deleted them. From memory, it doesn't seem like too much was removed. All the AT&T apps are gone but it appears LG's apps are still here.

Here is a list of apps I had shortly after factory reset on stock for people to compare with theirs. I have struck out the ones I was able to remove without my phone blowing up. Let me know if you safely removed one and I'll strike it out. Also let me know if I missed any or included an app which isn't part of stock. Thanks!

I can't root. What do I do?
Double check that you have followed all the steps in this guide (USB drivers, correct settings, etc.) If your software version ends in "c," you need to LGNPST to the version that ends in "o" (see the section on LGNPST in this post).
Why shouldn't I run the Nexus 4 conversion?
See this post by thecubed. Don't be impatient, a legit, safe ROM is forthcoming here. Messing with partition tables is needlessly risky.
My shiny new firmware has no APNs and I don't get mobile data! What do I do?
Use the APN settings in this post. They have always worked for me. If they don't try setting the "APN" variable to "pta" instead of "Phone."
... (ask me more questions!)
I hope you found this useful. Obviously this is a work in progress. I am way open to suggestion, please leave a comment below! If you liked this post, hit the thanks button and/or rate this thread so that others know this guide is legit. Thanks!
Very nice, man. This is great for people who don't want to have to hop between threads for all the different information.
I recommend we sticky it.
this is definitely appreciated. i was looking for a guide when i first rooted and unlocked, just to read along with making sure i was doing it right. more just to double check my process than actually needing it.
This is the best root/ROM guide I've ever seen. Excellent job.

Is there a way to restore? I totally messed up. My phone won't turn on at all. Help would be appreciated thanks.

I have never LGNPST-d my way back to stock, nor do I plan on doing it. If you are already unlocked, my advice to you is to obtain APKs of any bloat you removed, reinstall them, and follow my method for relocking and unrooting. That being said, you may be able to find someone willing to walk you through LGNPST-ing in IRC. I will try to figure out how to do it and if I feel confident I'll write a how-to. If someone wants to supply me with a howto, I'd be happy to include it in the OP and credit them (assuming their how-to makes sense and I can easily follow it).
Honestly though, it seems like a pointless exercise when you have CWM and su.
Sorry I can't be more accommodating.

I kinda need LGNPST. Somewhere during rooting, my phone just wouldn't turn back on. It did that screen flicker thing and the buttons flicker, but it stayed there for about 10+ minutes. So i figured, i wanted to start fresh with factory settings again. When i try to run LGNPST, it goes to 67% then the phone leaves download mode and then LGNPST says it's been disconnected and that i should restart my phone and then it can continue. Problem is that the phone can't even boot up at all.
I even tried the unbrick guide from the other optimus g forum but i can't get ahold of the .KDZ file. I'm not even sure if that process can work on an AT&T optimus g. Spoke to people on IRC and said that it sounds like a hardware issue. If i can't get this thing to boot, i'm going back to BestBuy to exchange for another one.

The folks in IRC know much more about lgnpst than I do. There's no secret that's being withheld, and unfortunately my best guess is that the lgnpst experts in IRC are right and it is a hardware issue. The good news is that you don't have to tell Best Buy the events leading up to your phone's demise and they probably won't be able to tell what they were either (we're talking about Best Buy employees here; most don't give two craps about their job).
Found a how to for a different lg phone here. Not certain that it will work for ours but it's worth a try. If it works for you, let me know and I'll add it the OP for others.

I've tried something similar to that. Basically that's just an older version of LGNPST but when you use it, it says verizon wireless on it, well the one i downloaded at least. And you're right, took it to best buy and they didn't ask about it. I have up to January 24 to exchange it again in case it happens again. If the guys on IRC say it's hardware after explaining exactly what i did, it's the hardware. Gotta admit, i'm new to LG. I came from a line of Samsungs. Usually if anything goes wrong id just reflash with Odin or Heimedall and everything's back to normal again. LGNPST does the same function? From what i've read it serves the same purpose.
Anyway, take 2 on this guide. Deleting everything LG from my computer and starting fresh. One thing that i did notice when rooting, cmd gave me an error saying i'm missing backup_restore.apk (or something of similar name).

Everything Huawei Y550 - Root/CWM/TWRP

I just got this Huawei HUAWEI Y550-L01 for a great price and it's a massive improvement on my G300 (which actually cost me about double what I paid for the Y550 a couple of years ago!)
There doesn't seem to be any custom ROMs available for it yet but I was wondering if it's possible to just root it, as there's quite a few apps I like to use that require root?
I've e-mailed Huawei and they've sent me my bootloader unlock code but unless I can root it, there's probably not much point doing that at the moment.

Eroot didnt work
SRS One Click didnt work
Vroot didnt work
Kingoroot didnt work
For now i dont think we have root on Y550
Apart from anti virus, theres not much i need root for, but the two key things changing the dpi (because the resolution isnt good enough), and full link 2 sd (because of the lack of storage space) are kinda important
Its a pretty new phone though, pretty sure root will be around soon enough.
BTW.. can you change title to Y550 rather than 500.. help people using the search function.

Woops, yep done.
Oh well, thanks for trying.
Yeah, lack of space and inability to use link2sd was the main reason I wanted root, although there's quite a few apps I use that need it too. Apart from that though, the missing encryption feature kills it for me. I e-mailed Huawei asking why it was missing but they haven't replied!
I have filled out the email response form on a couple of the root methods asking for Y550 to be added if possible. It was only launched in October, and November for most of UK so its pretty new, but generally there is root out there for most Huawei phones.
Most apps can be moved to SD the native way using app manager or similar but its the space hogging ones like Facebook that cant be.
For those passing by this thread, make sure you set SD as default in settings>Storage and then select defaut storage location as SD
and for ref:
CPU: Qualcomm MSM8974 (think this is a misidentifiation. meant to be MSM8916) Snapdragon 800 x 4 on Elpida (Krait 400 Arm 7)
GPU: Adreno 330
Overall, on the phone its not a bad bit of kit, was bought to replace a dying Galaxy S2 and the specs are pretty much the same as the S2, more CPU but less Storage.
Negatives:
Lack of storage space, about 1.3gb at stock
Screen Resolution: Is fairly low but actually looks pretty good. Just needs the DPI dropping down a bit.
The Huwai stock launcher is pants (but easily replaced)
The Good:
Battery life at the moment seems pretty good. Using it all day, whatsapp, twitter, music player (but no games), ive not come close to having to worry about a charge
Included apps: You can actually remove the bulk of the bloatware and most of the included apps are reasonable. The backup program is functional (but let down by lack of scheduled backups), the messaging and contacts replacements are passable (but lacking merge contacts), the power management is actualy fair good with good contral of which apps are shut down to save battery and which stay open, good control of which apps are allowed to push notifications etc so that aspect of it is good.
Camera: average, but fast and functional. Good enough for snaps, but lacks obviously from only being 5mp
Mobile internet is snappy as hell
The Meh..
Not totally convinced about the settings, drop downs etc with the MIUI styling on them,
Benchmarking

Down now to £69.99 on O2 Paygo
£1.47 on Ebay to unlock.
this phone is £49.95 on PAYG upgrade from carphonewarehouse.
The Ascend y550-L02 is now available in Australia through Vodafone PAYG for $99 AUD (including some pretty sweet extras), making it perhaps the cheapest 4g LTE option in OZ. All the standard one click root methods already mentioned don't work with this sub model either. A new root would be very appreciated! Unfortunately I'm not a developer, but I do like to reward those who are smarter than me and allow me to tweak my devices. Thanks in advance!

Looking forward to it. Would you post step by step instructions? Thanks!
DISCLAIMER - THIS CWM AND ROOT METHOD IS DESIGNED FOR THE G620 - IT IS ESSENTIALLY THE SAME PHONE BUT LIKE ANYTHING THERE ARE ALWAYS RISKS WITH INSTALLING CWM AND ROOTING YOUR PHONE. IT WORKED FOR ME, BUT I BEAR NO RESPONSIBILTY IF IT DOESNT WORK FOR YOU, BRICKS YOUR PHONE, OR TURNS YOU INTO A PUMPKIN.
Ok, rooting the Huawei Y550..
Source Credits Here and Here
Originally this is the boot image for the G620 but it has the same partition table as the Y550
Three step method - first you need your bootloader unlocked, then CWM installed, then superuser installed.
First you will need your bootloader unlocked. You can get this by emailing Huawei
to get your unlock email Huawei on [email protected]
Send them a request for bootloader unlock with the following info:
Serial Number: under battery
IMEI: under battery
Product ID: call * # * # 1357946 # * # * to get it
Model: HUAWEI Y550-L01
Once you have your code...
switch device off
boot into fastboot mode "volume down and power"
connect by usb to your PC
wait for drivers to install (just install the huawei app to get the drivers)
download and install ADB toolkit from google (or Android SDK Slim which ive attached as a zip)
open the directory adb toolkit is in, shift and right click and select open command window
type in... fastboot oem unlock 1234567812345678 where the number is your unlock code
Your bootloader will now be unlocked. Source and more info
Update: Alternate way to get the unlock code Link
UPDATE - TRWP RECOVERY
We now have TWRP thanks to patrik.KT. Source
1) Download the TWRP Image file Link
2) Place the image file in the same directory as fastbook.exe from the previous step
3) Connect phone in fastbook mode
4) Check compatability by booting only initially.
Code:
fastboot boot TWRP_y550_20150130.img
5) if boots correctly go back into fastbook mode and run in the dos window
Code:
fastboot flash recovery TWRP_y550_20150130.img
CWM Recovery
Zip file download Link
Extract zip file to computer
Put phone in fastboot mode (Down volume and power button)
Connect phone to PC and run the file - install-windows.bat
This will install a CWM boot to your phone and then reboot it

Dowloaded superuser.zip from HERE
(Do not use Super-SU it doesnt work with stock roms)
copy superuser.zip to your SD card.
Boot into CWM (Volume up and power key)
select english language if prompted
install zip from SD card and install superuser.zip
Boom....
Phone has CWM and Root.
Only downside is parts of the CWM (notably the backup section) are in chinese
Translation for backup section is:
backup image to internal SD
restore image from internal SD
delete image from internal SD
restore image with options from internal SD
backup image to external SD
restore image from external SD
delete image from external SD

Well theres one way to find out.
Joking aside, I dont know, would be a risk trying it (but then me trying g620 method on my y550 was a risk)..
Hard to find specs on the Tribute but all i can find...
1.2ghz quad core - the same
screen 480 x 854 pixels, 4.5 inches - the same
internal storage looks to be the same or similar, i have 1.6 gig on my y550, ive seen 1.62 reported for the y536, but it would need the partitions to be the same.
Y536 specs Link
Y550 specs Link
Pretty much all the specs are the same, slightly different size and weight.
Would be a gamble... but if you only paid $40 from walmart not a very expensive gamble.
Word of Warning - there are various stories that AT&T dont sell phones with unlockable bootloaders or dont allow them on their network. Not sure how reliable these rumours are
No problem with the unlocked bootoader on At&t's network on my Mom's Y536... just my $.02
Nice one dimspace. It seems to have worked on my Y01, at least CWM is installed and so is SuperUser.
I'm having a bit of trouble verifying though, as I don't really want to setup my Google Account on this phone (I already spent a while before erasing the storage). I downloaded this root checker http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2472076 which shows
"Application Superuser found"
and then in red
"Terminal does rooted
Busybox not installed"
so do I need busybox installed to check root? If so, which of these zips should I install:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=44175626#post44175626
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1929852
or maybe there's a newer version I need to install? Do I need to install it from CWM?
I use Jrummy Rootchecker..
You can download the apk without play store and just sideload it from SD.
use APK Downloader
just put the apps id in the box and generate download link, and you can download the apk direct.
The Jrummy rootchecker address is com.jrummyapps.rootchecker
For busybox, again just install busybox installer from play store (or download apk as above) id is com.jrummy.busybox.installer - then run it and follow the instructions to install busybox
For terminal - use terminal emulator - id is jackpal.androidterm
all three of those working fine with me and i have full root, busybox and terminal.
the busybox installer will automatically check root, and download the applicable busybox for you, terminal installs as a normal apk. but you dont NEED them as long as your root is working. some applications do need busybox, but you dont have to have terminal.

BOATLOADER
YOU CAN UNOFFICIALLY UNLOCK YOUR BOOTLOADER HERE
You first need to unlock your bootloader before you can root your device.
@lucaszell for the amazing guide. @Sam205 for pointing it out in M4 Aqua forum
1. Go to Sony Website HERE
2. Choose M2 or M and complete the steps to get your KEY
3. Install Flashtool
4. Go to Settings - About phone - Status
Scroll to down to see serial number. (device name)
Amended for clarifications
1.: Go to the folder where Flashtool is installed. Usually C:/Flashtool
2.: Open the folder named "Custom"
3.: Open the folder named "Mydevices" (if it exists, in my case Flashtool version 0.9.18.4) (You may create if it doesnot)
3b.: In the newer Flashtool, you need to put the folder in "C:\Users\<username>\.flashTool\registeredDevices" in step 3.
That is, if you've picked the default for your flashtool home folder or you can choose manually.
4.: Create A New Folder and Rename the folder with your device code. Refer to Obs2 how to find your device code
5.: Open the folder created previously
6.: Create a new text file and rename it as ulcode
7.: Paste your unlock code and save it in the text file
8.: Open Flashtools and try the BLU option again.
Obs 1: the step #3 I think it depends on your Flashtool version, because it wasn't mentioned at the solution
Obs 2: at the step #4 is mentioned your device code. your device code is showed in the log when you click the button BLU, at the "Current device", after your device model.
Search a line like:
09/045/2015 23:45:08 - INFO - Current device : C2104 - AB100C2DE3 - 1272-4136_R5B - 1269-5420_15.3.A.1.17 - WORLD-a_15.3.A.1.17
in this case, the device code is AB100C2DE3 and this should be the new folder name (step 4)

TWRP Recovery for M4 Aqua (No gui, command line only)
This is for E2303 I didn't test on other models, feel free to do so but I take no responsibility whatsoever if anything happens
This will disable OTA updates, if you want them back you can flash the FOTA kernel with FlashTool
Confrmed to be working on those variants:
E2303, E2306, E2333, E2353, E2363
Ok here it is thanks to @jeffreyvh kernel we can finally flash zips however we have 3 catches:
1. No GUI (Sony's fault until they provide full sources for our phones, we're stuck here)
2. You have to mount /system, /data and /cache manually (Working on it)
3. No external SD card support (working on it)
No problem? Cool..
Ok here's how to do it:
0. You need unlocked bootloader <-- Click here to see how
1. Download the recovery.img
2. Flash the recovery file with fastboot
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
3. Pull the cable turning off your phone.
4. Press the power button + volume down, when the phone vibrates, press the volume down button repetedly.
5. The Sony logo will disappear and you'll get a black screen (It's okay, congrats you've now booted twrp)
Now for the magic:
Connect your cable, make sure you have ADB and drivers installed.
In your terminal or dos window type:
Code:
adb shell
you'll get a prompt like ~ #
type these three commands:
Code:
mount -w /dev/block/platform/7824900.sdhci/by-name/system /system
mount -w /dev/block/platform/7824900.sdhci/by-name/userdata /data
mount -w /dev/block/platform/7824900.sdhci/by-name/cache /cache
Now that you have the partition mounted you can flash your zip files:
We don't have external SD card support so for now we're going to stick with sideload
type:
Code:
twrp sideload
adb shell will exit, it's okay now we can install the zip file like this:
Code:
adb sideload <path_to_zip>
path to zip on your computer without the < >
so if you downloaded superSU on C:\Downloads\SuperSU.zip
you type
Code:
adb sideload C:\Downloads\SuperSU.zip
when you're done type:
Code:
adb reboot
and pull the cable
For Rooting:
Download SuperSU flashable zip from here https://download.chainfire.eu/696/SuperSU
and flash it like explained before
good luck

Instructions
I found this guide very helpful and thus you can refer it here :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928343
SOME CONSIDERATIONS :
1.Make sure you choose the FTF file for your device or you can risk bricking your phone forever.
At the moment, there are no FTF files so you will need to be patient.
2. Make sure all drivers are properly installed
3. To boot into flashmode/fastboot, you will need to turn off device.Hold volume up OR volume down and then connect your device while holding the volume key.
Volume up would take you to flashmode while volume down would take you to fastboot mode. Remember, you will need fastboot/flashtool drivers before you can flash anything.
here is another guide for you just as reference.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-l/general/xperia-l-how-to-flash-tool-unlocking-t2337955
However if you have still issues , I can rewrite the guide.
ALL DRIVER PROBLEMS SOLUTIONS
I have seen some posts where users are having difficulty connecting Xperia M4 to their PC or ADB. Therefore, I am writing this guide to help you all.
The guide was prepared using Windows 7 Ultimate but should work with Windows XP and Windows 8.
Firstly, Sony uses a different driver for their Xperia devices and therefore, sometimes you are unable to install drivers for your devices especially for ADB commands.
IF YOU ARE LUCKY
There are few ways to get around to install drivers for your device. The most convenient and easy is you plug in your device and wait for automatic detection of your device. Make sure you have USB connected as MTP in MY XPERIA in SETTINGS of your phone. The device drivers would be automatically installed by Windows update.
METHOD
If suppose you can not install your drivers, connect your xperia and then on your PC, go to My computer > Properties>Device Manager.
You should see an undetected hardware with a yellow exclamation mark over it. Open it and click on update my drivers. Then choose GOOGLE DRIVERS by choosing hard-drive. This should install the drivers for you. If this doesnot work. Try the attachment with the post where the drivers are modified to work with Sony Xperia Devices.
Follow the same steps but this time choose the attachment folder to search for drivers. It might say, the drivers are not verified. Just Ignore it and carry on installing them. You will need to unzip these files.
IF suppose you do not see any exclamation mark while you connect your xperia. Just go to control panel and add new hardware. Select, I will choose my device and then install from hard-disk. Select the folder where you have unzipped the files and you are good to go. The name of new hardware is not important as windows will read the drivers files and install drivers for Xperia.
This will install all drivers for your device. If there are two or more drivers while installing them. Redo the steps and install all of them individually.
Suppose your ADB still doesnot work, then
FOR ADB DRIVERS :
Download the ADB Universal Drivers and connect your device. Then hit install. The ADB drivers will be automatically detected and installed.
Further, if these tricks fail, you can delete the unknown driver from your control panel and then try finding it again by using refresh button(scan for new hardware changes) in device manager.
Another trick is to click on unknown drivers and delete them. Connect your phone and restart your phone. Then scan for new hardware in device manager. The drivers should be installed for your device.
If still there are some problems, I will try to help you out.
DOWNLOAD LINKS
DOWNLOAD GOOGLE DRIVERS FOR MTP/ PC ETC
https://dl-ssl.google.com//android/repository/latest_usb_driver_windows.zip
DOWNLOAD UNIVERSAL ADB DRIVERS HERE :
http://adbdriver.com/upload/AdbDriverInstaller.exe
UPLOADED FILE : Sony Xperia Drivers for ADB.
UPDATE (EASIEST METHOD) :
Use flashtool drivers to install adb/fastboot/flashboot drivers. This is the most simplest and easiest method I have come across lately.
Simply download flashtool
http://www.flashtool.net/index.php
Go to folder where you have downloaded it. Usually C:/flashtool/drivers.
Select the drivers for your particular device. I use universal for all three types of drivers. It is helpful to boot into fastboot/Flashtool before installing the drivers but not necessarily.
FOR LINUX DRIVERS :
(No drivers required)
In your Xperia go to :
Settings > Xperia > usb connectivity > usb connection mode
Select Mass storage mode (MSC) > Press OK
Then plug your phone with your SDCARD inside
Try this guide if that does not work,LINUX DRIVERS GUIDE
Good Luck
Still problem ? Quote me back
IMPORTANT
On windows 8 and above you will need to disable DRIVER VERIFICATION in your windows settings to successfully install your drivers

HOW TO KEEP RAM CLEAN AND KEEP YOUR PHONE BUTTER SMOOTH :
The phone MUST be fully rooted and all the recommended applications isntalled. They can be easily found on the Google Play. Links are provided for reference. In this guide I have used all the PRO (paid) applications. The Free versions will do fine but It is expected that some options are disabled in the free version. You can help developers by your contribution to their work
ADVANCED TASK KILLER
Advanced task manager is used to kill tasks running in the background.
Add advanced task killer widget to your home screen. Every time you need to kill background applications, just tap it once. This way all the applications in the background are periodically killed and thus, more RAM is available to your system and thus increased performance.
GREENIFY[ROOT]:
This application/system basically looks for applications running in the background. These background processes might slow down system. Furthermore, these increase the battery usage and reduce battery time. Greenify detects the background applications and hibernates them. This not only speeds up the phone but also saves battery.
SICK OF BLOATWARE?
TITANIUM BACKUP [ROOT]
Titanium backup is used for backing up your applications and system files. This can also DELETE applications from your ROM permenantly.
I recommend you make a backup with Titanium backup before uninstalling the files. REMEMBER, IF YOU UNINSTALL A SYSTEM FILE, YOU WILL NEED TO REFLASH YOUR ROM and you will end up in BOOTLOOP.
I will paste a screenshot to tell you which applications can be deleted easily.
OTHER SETTINGS :
Go to your settings>developers tools> background limit> use as less as you want. THIS WILL INCREASE USER EXPERIENCE
HOW TO SWAP EXTERNAL MEMORY & INSTALL AS MANY GAMELOFT GAMES AS YOU WANT
Many of you are having problems installing many games in your internal memory and can only utilise 4 gb of your memory. This means only 3 gameloft games. Thus I will briefly help you with memory issues related to Xperia M4
This one is very easy. Install Folder Mount and it will do the rest. Remember with free version, you can only mount 3 folders. The application is frequently updated and it has great support for Xperia M4.
Basically this application creates a link folder in your SD card which is detected by games automatically once fully setup. It also moves your files into your SD card and this saves your EXTERNAL MEMORY FULLY. You can install as many games or applications and link them to your SD card. Its that simple.
Use App analyzer option to mount folders. Manual folder mounts are not recommended!
Go to app analyzer>Select Game> Creat pair(s)>Move files as well> Mounted
Make sure Folder Mount is ticked green before running games.
INTERNAL MEMORY PROBLEMS
Internal memory not adding up? Unknown files hogging your space.
This can be managed by SD MAID and TITANIUM BACKUP.
With SD Maid, you can free a lot of space. It has many cool features. I use the Corpse finder and System cleaner, App Cleaner.
You may also try app cleaner if you like.
Go to CORPSE FINDER>FIND FILES>DELETE ALL FILES. It will take some time looking for files.
SYSTEMCLEANER>FIND FILES>DELETE ALL FILES. It will take some time looking for files.
TITANIUM BACKUP IS USED TO RELOCATE THE MEMORY THAT IS MISSING.
Titanium backup> MENU > clean up the dalvik cache
This will also give you back some INTERNAL MEMORY BACK.

HOW TO MAKE A TA PARTITION BACKUP.
1. Download the latest version of Backup TA from here DOWNLOAD HERE
2. Extract the ZIP file to a folder location of your choosing.
3. Navigate to the folder location of Backup TA.
4. Make sure no other script or application which is using ADB is running.
5. Make sure the device is booted in normal mode (the way you normally use it).
6. Run Backup-TA.bat
7. Read the last paragraph of the license before continuing.
8. Read the information and follow the instructions given by the tool.
Someone pointed out that the script needs root to work.
UNLOCK bootloader from Official Website[ Sony doesnot support unlock bootloader of this device yet
However, Once supported, the following method MUST work!
OFFICIAL SONY WEBSITE TO UNLOCK BOOTLOADER
Please note! It will only be possible to unlock the boot loader for certain releases of this model. You can check if it is possible to unlock the boot loader of your device by checking the service menu.
Open the Contacts app.
Click the menu button in the top right.
Click Settings.
Long press (for about 5 seconds) somewhere in the empty space just above soft key bar, and then release your finger. A button named Enter service code will then appear in the same area (this may take a few tries).
Click Enter service code. A dialler will appear.
Enter *#*#7378423#*#* in the dialler.
Tap Service info > Configuration > Rooting Status. If Bootloader unlock allowed says Yes, then you can continue with the next step. If it says No, or if the status is missing, your device cannot be unlocked(bootloader).
If your bootloader can be unlocked, proceed to the above website and follow the on screen instructions. You do not need to download full adb , just download the platform tools attached with this guide.
FOR MY REFERENCE. IGNORE
Just for my reference. Ignore it
These do not work.
Refer to first post for prerequisites.
ROOT CONFIRMATION
It was false root confirmation. You are more than welcome to try to find which method works for you from the following.
I have few confirmations of root working on Xperia M4 using this tool. Ignore what it says about kitkat or anything. Just make sure you got USB debugging enabled and drivers installed.
http://rootgenius.com/
Other methods that might work.
METHOD 1 (Kitkat/Lollipop. Unlocked/Locked Bootloaders)
This method has been implemented many a times by me and it has yeilded high results on different devices I have worked on.
We will replace the KingUser (chinese app like SuperSu) with SuperSU so you do not need to worry. You can also factory reset in order to be completely certain that no extra scripts are left in your system if you have any doubts about privacy.
1.Install iRoot (also called Vroot) (in chinese). The Chinese version is on 1.83 while the english translated is still on 1.78. Use the Chinese one.
http://www.mgyun.com/
2.Run iRoot app from PC. Wait till it is complete. You will have root with some system cleaner app with King user. Maybe you be successful with full root. Check Root Checker.
METHOD 2
It is also a chinese method and it also has been used by me for few devices. Many people have problems trusting it, but it installs superSU so I think I would not be concerned much. Feel free to try
1.Install KingoRoot
http://www.kingoapp.com/
2. Run the script and see if it helps. Wait about 15 minutes .
METHOD 3
1.After running iRoot for explort, run KingoRoot. Wait about 5-15 minutes as it would go on forever if it is not successful in rooting your device.
2.Close afterwards.
3. Run Iroot and Kingoroot together. Wait till it is restarted and you acquire root with KingUser.
The trick here is the moment, System is being restarted (device), Kingoroot pushes some scripts and together they are a deadly combination.
To GET SUPERSU if you got any other app instead for ROOT
1.Install supersu from market.
2.Update binaries
3.Restart.
Does not work ?
Use Beta SuperSU instead versions 2.48/2.49.
Install apk and try updating binaries.

You will need to update SuperSU in these cases as well
METHOD 9
Use DoomLord Tool Kit.
Enable USB debugging and run the script. Start with the latest script v17 and carry on with older version scripts. You may need to update SuperSU/Superuser file to latest 2.49 Beta. Link in FAQ

FAQ
In some scripts, you might find outdated version of SuperSU and it would not work unless you change the file with the latest SuperSU. Make sure you keep the name of the zip same, for example if the folder contains update, rename superSU 2.48 or 2.49 or2.47 or 2.46 to update as well. If it contains superSU, rename it to SuperSU.zip from supersu beta 2.49Beta etc.
You can find the superSU zip here :

Kingo root doesn't work, and there are security concerns about iRoot/vRoot. I wouldn't recommend either. Towelroot doesn't work on any Lollipop device to the best of my knowledge. SuperOneClick and Z4Root are both for Gingerbread devices, so neither of those are even worth trying.

I don't see a prerooted ftf working either, until there is a recovery method for the phone. As far as I know, only a true stock ftf can be flashed using flashtools.

Very nice work sir, Appreciate it very much.
As I said on other thread, I cant wait for my device to be rooted and get all the blootware away
When any method works, I'll post my feedback right here!

The guide has been completed. It is upto you to try and find an exploit. At the moment, this is your best bet and I have used many methods for recent devices on Lollipop to root my devices and these tools have been successful. At times, you only need to update SuperSU in the script usually. Give them a try and post your valuable feedback.
I hope you are all aware of USB debugging needs to turned on and you have all the latest drivers installed!
If any script can not find your device, it means either USB debugging is turned off or you do not have drivers installed

I know USB debugging has to be enabled. Updating or installing SuperSu is only useful once the device has been rooted. Unfortunately none of the methods posted are capable of doing so. If you post a guide to rooting, it shouldn't be up to me to find the solution; respectfully, it rather defeats the object of "a guide". Some of the methods proposed haven't worked since Gingerbread. Which script are you referring to, and how does one update it to include SuperSu?

I understand your point mate. No offense!
The problem is that I do not own this device, if I had this device or you can provide me an FTF file, maybe I can work something out. For now, you can try these methods. I have successfully rooted LG devices/ Xperia and even samsung using the above 8 methods.
For your other questions, look at this. Also, Sometimes when i was trying to root my device , supersu 2.46 was not able to root it with the same script yet when i replaced it with 2.447 beta. It did
