[Q] Factory built-in firmware backup - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
is there any easy way to backup my original factory firmware so after I flash a new ROM and I won't like it I can revert back to what factory gave me?

Best you can do is root your phone, and do a nandroid backup in CWRecovery before doing anything else to the phone (flashing a custom rom/kernel/etc). This will give you a 'snapshot' of your stock setup only with root, and all you'd need to do to unroot is flash a stock kernel.
Or you can simply flash a stock rom with Odin over whatever you have at the time.
There's no way to do what you're asking with a stock/unrooted phone.

As mentioned above u can't do it with out rooting. First root your phone without flashing any custom rom or kernel by pasting the zip file in ext sd and apply update using stock recovery. Then download recovery tools from play store and get your temporary cwm touch recovery. After this go to stock recovery and apply this zip. Then do a nandroid backup and reboot after it finishes. You'll have the exact stock rom, kernel and recovery. :good:

I know you guys here don't like such questions, but can I ask for links to that tools? I got S2 Root file but it has to be flashed via Odin. What recovery tools from Play Store? You mean this?: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.mkrtchyan.recoverytools&hl=pl
How can I get "my temporary CWM touch recovery"? What ZIP to apply then? Geez! Am I that stupid or it is just language issue? Hahaha

Dont worry dude. i'll try and explain as much as i can.
1. Go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746794 and choose the Root_SuperSU.0.96.Only-signed.zip or Root_SuperSU.0.98.Only-signed.zip from the attachments.
2. Paste it in your ext sd card and power off.
3. Reboot into recovery mode and choose apply update from sdcard and select the SuperSU file.
4. Now reboot your device and it will be successfully rooted and SuperSU will be installed.
5. Download temporary cwm recovery from their website or get it via recovery tools in play store. (link provided by you is correct except for different language i think )
6. Paste cwm.zip it in ext sd and reboot into recovery mode. apply update and you will get temporary cwm recovery.
7. Now you can take backup from it. it will backup all your data and both rom, kernel and even recovery will be stock.
Be careful while flashing roms or kernels though. :good:

got superuser & rom manager
so I must flash XWKE7 first?
yes best way to install cognition rom (because the rom is based on XWKE7)
1) flash stock XWKE7 rom with odin
2) flash CF root for XWKE7
3) download cognition rom 1.07 and put it on /sdcard/external sd-card
4) boot with 3 keys into CWMrecovery
5) choose cognition_s2_107.zip file on sdcard and flash this wonderful rom
so i have done

Questions, if you don't mind:
I rooted ages ago and apparently a lot has changed since then..new roms/kernels and other stuff.
First, I think 1) and 2) are understandable. Get 1) from Intratech's thread, flash with Odin. Get 2) from ChainFire's thread, flash with Odin. I can do this on my existing kernel, right? I have PDA: XWKE2
- Where do I get CWMrecovery from? It's not in the Market.
- How do I boot with three keys?

[Q] TWRP & CWM dual boot? Is it possible?

I made a stock recovery on CWM...then later I got TWRP and I like it, but if I want my old recoveries I can't get to them. How can I create an option to boot one or the other when booting into recovery?
You will have to install CWM recovery back on the phone to install the CWM backups. Just keep the install file handy.
Can he get to CWM Recovery install from his new TWRP that comes up now when he boots into recovery??
I ask this, because I have(had) CWM and used it.. Then I went and installed TWRP.... and now it works.....
BUT my backup(nandroid) is CWM.....
and while using TWRP..I want to goto CWM and press install... and cannot find the CWM.zip (within TWRP)....
Do I have to goback to Odin and reinstall the CWM??? Where would it go??
Put the CWM install zip the same place you would place any *.zip files to install. TWRP should have no issue installing CWM.
thanks Ray... I did do this.. but TWRP doesn't recognize it.. Could it be because there is only the .tar inside the zip?? it's the zip I used for Odin... maybe I should use a different CWM zip.. I know there's quite a few.. thanks....
Yes... Odin files are not usable in recovery.
You need a zip made to use in recovery.
You will find a zip recovery here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1526431

Returning to stock (no root, complete stock everything!)

Can someone help me return to complete stock settings? I know there is no RUU yet, but there must be some way to go back to stock. I'm currently unlocked, running TWRP recovery, and the Team Nocturnal Odexed Stock ROM, but I'm having force closing issues and cannot install the OTA update no matter what stock recovery or stock kernel I flash. Thank you for your help.

You can't relock it yet but you should just need the stock tmobile rom, no recovery, and no root to get OTAs.
This is what i had to do, i was in the same boat!

download this. Its the closest to a stock nandroid that i found. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=40745177&postcount=55 This is a nandroid back up, not a flashable zip.
I Used clockwork mod recovery. I dont know if its the same for twrp. So to be safe i would install CWM.
After you download it you have to open it up on your computer and put the "unzipped" file 2013-04-26.06.21.44 Clockworkmod/backup folder on your phone. Reboot into cwm and find restore, and install this file.
If you need to remove root for any reason, you will have to flash flash a custom kernel (should be easy to find, i just searched for kernel under the t mo htc one development thread) Then download a file explorer and grant it root access. Delete the Superuser APK and reboot. After that flash the stock kernel, and you should be all set. I think this is about the best we can do to get back to stock on tmobile with out a RUU. I hope I helped you out. :good:
After you successfully install this you will need to flash the stock recovery.img. After that reboot and install the OTA update. If it fails you may need to re-lock the bootloader.
Oh and If you havent already, i would download the HTC one all in one kit (search for it in the forum) it makes doing alot of this much much easier.
You're going to need stock recovery to get ota updates to install.

I'm also trying to revert to stock. After unzipping this file, which parts do I need to move to my phone? Is it the entire 2013-04-26.06.21.44 folder, or only the .tar file located within? Also, I used android file transfer to put the file onto my phone, is just putting it in the clockworkmod file sufficient?

You will put the whole 2013-04-26.06.21.44 on it. There should be a folder in the cwm folder that says backup. if not install cwm rom manager from the market and it should create it for you.
I would restore the nandroid provided but I don't even have access to the /data directory. I've tried different recoveries, relocking and unlocking bootloader and can't find a way to access /data directory. I can't boot to rom since /system is wiped and I can't sideload any zips. Any ideas what to do?

You could try the zip in this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...-2-6-3-0-touch-recovery-t1943592/post50943534
Then you could just flash that using CWM. And yes it does affect things when you flash it as it changes your recovery from CWM to TWRP which is more touch screen based, easier to use as well as being a lot more powerful than a basic CWM. Having changed you may find TWRP doesn't find your previous backups. This is usually as both of those recoveries tend to save them in different places and it's just looking in the wrong place for the files. You can either change the settings to a CWM style restore or just run a new backup through TWRP and delete the old CWM one.

Guys, everytime I flash twrp using ODIN it goes down as a success. And it reboots the phone. But then I shut down the phone and reboot to recovery its once again the default Samsung Recovery. The phone is not rooted. How do I prevent the original recovery from overwriting the TWRP recovery?

Just use the TWRP Manager from the Play Store. Root the phone http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=33305792&postcount=3 and install the manager.
@lurker316: forget TWRP-manager. The only extra step, you need, is a factory reset. So backup all your data before. To avoid reboot after flashing TWRP, either uncheck reboot in Odin or pull out battery after succeeded flash.
Hi guys, i have a problem with my phone, I tryed to re-root it after upgrading to android 4.3, now the only response i get from the phone is download mode and that happens only when it's plugged in, I applied this TWRP but i still have the same problem. please if anyone has an idea, help!

[Q] Root success, but how to install recovery.

I've successfully rooted my I9300, actually I wanted to install recovery and try new ROMSsso I went to the method with recovery install through ODIN. But it didn't work for me as the matter was overwriting of stock revovery, I tried every method there to somehow get recovery installed. But all failed. Finally went to CF AutoRoot method and I only have root access now, the phone feel a bit slow now.
1. When an root app is run it takes a lot time to prompt me with root grant/deny(precise to say some app shown timeout). What's the problem?
2. Can somebody say how to get custom recovery in this condition?
3. I have backed up the efs and got two backup files as these[efs.raw.img-20 MB & modem.bin-12.1 MB] . Is it all? anything missing?
After getting a recovery I will make a NANDROID Backup. But please help me in the above three questions.
Thanks for your kind reply.
1. Factory reset
2. You can't, not with a stock firmware
3. Depends how you backed up

for the 2. If I can't with the stock firmware how to do it then? Pretty sure there is a way, that's what I'm asking.
Flash recovery with Odin then reboot straight into recovery and flash custom rom, if you allow stock firmware to boot it will overwrite recovery.
There is a guide in sticky thread.

EDIT: or please at least say me how to block stock recovery overwrite through Terminal Emulator or what else.
