[HOW-TO] Tethering Without Root - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 General

For those of you waiting patiently eek for root, there is a simple substitute for WiFi Tether that worked on the Note II and some other phones as well. I'm just leaving this here in case someone doesn't know.
1. Go to Settings > More Settings > Mobile Hotspot (don't turn it on, but select it).
2. Press Configure and set your desired hotspot settings.
3. Go to Play Store and download "Hotspot Toggle Widget" by Fattin Hotspot Network. Link.
4. Add widget to home screen.
5. Toggle widget on.
6. Press the Home button to dismiss this annoying, useless popup.
7. Enjoy.

This also works with Foxfi when you get the subscription notification, just click home and tether away.

Works like a charm! Thank you...

I can verify that foxfi works fine on mine also!

Both of these methods work, I just wonder how long until Big Red patches this out.

It has worked forever on the Note2 which kinda surprised me.

Any word on doing this with unlimited?
I'm sure it would work, but will Verizon be able to track it somehow?

I've been tethering on my unlimited plan for a couple years and have never had an issue. I use around 20GB per month, mostly without tethering, but I do use it.

I have tethered for years also. My kids and wife use my tether since I am only one with unlimited. I average 20 gb per month and never had any issues.

I have unlimited and it's working fine. I don't think I've ever heard of anyone getting hassled for using it modestly.

What is the advantage of doing this instead of just using the native app?

People on the older unlimited data plans do not have free tethering included in their plans.

I'm not sure they really care.
I always kept my usage reasonable, but some douche where I work was DLing torrents at over 100 gigs a month!!

So for those on a 4gb/month plan they can use the built-in tethering app and be just fine without incurring any added costs for doing so?

If you are on a not unlimited plan you should already have tethering enabled, so no need to do anything but use the built-in app.

Oh, damn 100GB a month? That's nuts. I wonder if there's a cutoff where Verizon starts to become concerned about data use. 20GB? 30GB?

Actually the only plan you can tether at no extra charge its the share everything. If you are on any other plan, it is not included. Okay

Hmm for some reason not working for me. Following directions precisely. Stock rooted. Keeps checking for Verizon subscription.

Won't do it with Grandfathered Unlimited Data plans... anyway, by looking at data usage they can see if you are tethering or not no matter what app you use to do it. LOL.
$15 for a feature that's suppose to be free no thanks, I may work for T-Mobile but I'm not paying extra for something thats is a froyo feature by default.

Some people are getting Text Messages from T-Mobile stating that they have "some how" picked up that they are tethering via the Google Code, and the native applications and are asking for $15 fee for doing it. there is a thread floating around here somewhere on it.

even though the native Application has a WEP code input option. the Wi-FiTether.apk has a MAC address white listing option along with encryption options so it will only allow certain devices to connect to yours. which i really like. I've been driving down the highway doing 65mph and had people try to connect to my wi-fi that i am letting my wife use for her netbook.
MAC filtering will not allow them to get to the web....
thats my reason for wanting it.
I just use the one built into my phone, they don't charge me and it works great...
Does anyone have the APK of the one that came with the phone? I'm not on stock rom and would like to try the original one
Well in all regards it's a good thing I searched on this subject before I posted anything. In any case does this app let you limit your bandwidth when using it as a wi-fi hotspot? or is there any app that will let me limit my speeds when using the wi-fi?

[Q] Wifi tether will foxfi work

I have unlimited data and tether my s3 all the time. My fear is with this phone with a locked boot. And no root. Will apps like foxfi work?
As far as I know, foxfi doesn't work on Jelly Bean. It's not a root limitation - they haven't updated it to work with JB, and actually advise against upgrading to JB if you wanna keep using in in their app description on the Play store

I wouldn't tether with unlimited data unless you are forking over the $20/month for this service. A lot of people who used tether apps on iPhone got kicked off their unlimited data plans to shared data plans due to "abuse of network usage."

I wouldn't risk my unlimited data over $20 a month extra, but to each his own. If I can keep unlimited for as long as i'm on this plan, that would be great as that seems to be a dying benefit. Getting kicked back to 2gb/month for the same cost is a kick to the balls. People have gotten notes from VZW from just tethering.
Of course, if you just tether whilst on 4g this isn't an issue.
Maybe I've been lucky, but I've never gotten so much as a courtesy letter. My secret was to build up to my 7GB a month by going 2GB, 4GB, then 5.5GB the months prior. But, to be honest, it just depends on my laptop travel use. As long as you don't go from 1 GB/month to 10, you should be okay.

I can confirm the wifi-tether does work for a non-rooted GNex running Jelly Bean on Verizon, the usb tether does not and I get a message to contact Verizon if I want to activate it lol (I do not get this message at all when I use the wifi-tether, there is a problem with FoxFi where it only lets u use 10min even if u paid for it so hopefully they fix that)

The Note 2 and GNex are different phones though, so it's not really a fair test.
I use anywhere from 5-10 gb on my phone, and 5-15 gb tethering. Havent had an issue in 2 years.

Depends on the phone. They really clamped down on this with iPhones. I know some people who got booted down to tiered plans because they were cited as abusing the network.

It works through the ROM without any extra Apps. Just turn it on through the Wifi menu, or use the toggle from the pull down menu.
You'll get the red Verizon wifi icon in your task bar, but as long as you don't get a message to sign up for the wifi plan, you're good to go.
and if you get the subscription notification, just download portable wifi hotspot from playstore and that app will bypass it.
Gnome is correct. No apps needed with Beans ROMs.

To get the best results I have used the TrevE mod wifi tether app which can also be installed via beans rom... I find that I get FULL download and upload bandwidth from Verizon versus the stock app where I only get about 5-10mbps down and about 5mbps upload... You do have to have the correct settings though. The settings can be found in Bean's rom thread and it has been working great for me with no disconnects and about double the speed of the stock app! :good:

I am thinking about bucking up and buying one of these full price because I don't want to loose unlimited data. WiFi tether is my biggest need for free of course. On my droid x I use WiFi tether beta works like a top is this possible on rooted stock or is via custom ROM needed? Considering the 750$ I want to get the best bang for my buck any input is appreciated thanks in advance.

I'm not familiar with that app. But like you, I use WiFi tether all the time, with an unlimited plan. "Portable WiFi Hotspot" works great, with stock and rooted as well. Available from the Market, and free to boot.
Thank you yeah I have been digging around and from what I read if you get a subsidized phone that the take your grandfathering that's why I think I will have to buy it outright at full price it sucks but I can burn through 5 gigs a week between hulu and Netflix tethering 2 other devices so a tiered data plan would kill me.
Don't waste your time with native Verizon hotspot app.

Foxfi Stopped working after latest update... A simple fix

i have paid for the foxfi wifi tethering app.
It was working fine before the latest update.
Now the phone is erroring out and is prompting me to click on a "go to my verizon mobile" or "call customer service button".
all you have to do is click on "My verizon mobile" when prompted and then just back out of the my v mobile app and the tethering works fine.
And no, i have accidently signed up with a tethering plan.. i double checked to see if it did.
Hopefully this helps a fellow paid foxfi user.

If your plan is capped at a data limit you WILL be able to use it. If not VZW would be in a lot of trouble. They got fined for this before. However those of us on an unlimited plan are blocked access to it.

I haven't installed any updates and don't plan on it. So, what is it that I am missing from this update that has everyone losing their Root access to get? I sort of figured that Verizon would be sending out an update to eliminate the option of being able load the prerelease kernel or any other ones for that matter.

Or just use a different firmware. I bought my phone already rooted - I previously would have been nervous about rooting it, but since it came that way... and launching the hotspot is just a simple button click in the notifications pull down.
FoxFi has been fixed, as of today, and now works just as it did before. It will ask you something about creating a certificate (which you can read about on their site I guess).. anyhow, I updated mine and it works w/o utilizing the "home button" trick from before.
