[Q] Buy Xperia Sola? - Sony Xperia P, U, Sola, Go

Hi guys,
I've owned my Live with Walkman for about 1.5 years and had a great time with it, but now it is time to move on. I am thinking of buying the Xperia Sola because I love Sony's Xperia NXT styled firmware (as opposed to the JB firmware-hate the Z1 UI), so is it worth buying the Sola-Sony is currently holding a discount so I will get it for a good price . But does it meet the following key points...
- Easily rootable?
- Install CM X on stock kernel? (X being either CM9 or CM10)
- Good android development? (many ROMs and mods?)
- Stock ICS firmware smooth AND stable? (does everything work? incl. little things like find on page in browser etc...)
- Any common problems?
Also is it proper Xperia NXT style, because when I upgraded my Live to ICS we got GB style settings menu's e.g. call settings and GB style framework and stuff-it was quite a poor effort from Sony ).
I've watched reviews on YouTube but none of them go into the detail I need, so help is much appreciated.
Thanks

Hi,I highly recommend you to buy the Xperia L,if you buy the Xperia sola you will REGRET as it doesn't receive any more firmware update since 6.1.1.B.1.54 update.
It was very lag in ICS,in JB (unofficial) smooth but not good as ICS
And Xperia sola was a bit old,so go for Xperia L or Xperia M.
Regards,
Ben.

i recommended you to buy Xperia M, because if you buy xperia sola you wouldn't get a newest firmware. :good:

My brother has an Xperia M and it is good but I want something different. I assume Xperia L is even better but it is way out of my price range. I can get Xperia Sola for about £135 GBP which is significantly cheaper than the other two.

Has anyone owned a 2011 Xperia handset, if so, how is ICS on the Sola compared to the 2011 Xperia?
I'm not too fussed about firmware, ICS is good, I know in terms of updates the Sola most probably won't get any.

Then wait till you got enough money and buy Xperia L.
Abd yes,Xperia L was a bit better than Xperia M.
But Xperia sola really not recommend,i'm the owner of Xperia sola, very lag.
Now it's dead due to water damage.
I will be getting Xperia SP when i have enough money.
So overall,i suggest you Xperia L.

I don't have much money, I cannot afford the L even the M, I just don't see myself paying anything above £150 GBP for a phone-thats just me . When it comes to money I am very controlling, even if I had £500 I wouldn't buy the Xperia Z but would buy something cheaper and save the cash...
Anyway I know that to some people even a one second delay makes the phone 'laggy' (e.g. when opening an app) and for others its when the phone can't multitask quick enough.
But can the Sola easily carry out everyday tasks smoothly e.g. email, calendar, web browsing etc...
Furthermore does the phone have elements of GB e.g. GB style settings menu's such as the call settings (this was the case in the 2011 Xperia ICS).

But i can tell you that Xperia sola was very lag on ICS if you install too many apps...And i always get lower than 30MB free RAM.
Or you can buy Xperia P...Better.

Thanks for the advice guys, I've decided not to buy the Sola-main reason being the performance. I suppose I will wait a month or two and keep an eye on the Xperia L to see if the price goes down. Thanks again! :victory:

Good idea is P, nice phone, good developers, nice pergormance.

Getting a sola at this time is just a waste of money.

Dont....just dont
you will regret it...sony never offers support for their phones...and never release sources so developers can make custom roms...i learned my lesson...buy a samsung or htc or whatever

OK, first of all, Xperia Sola is not a bad phone at all, is one of the best investments I've ever did.
But we need to think...
All functions of stock works? Yeah, it does, the question is barely redundant but whatever.
Stable ROM, well, yes and no, depends on what ROM you use, I see you like the eXperience ROM, is great. But you will face some problems and crashes because is based in a un official stock JB and yeah, its kinda buggy.
Easy to root, well, yeah, Bin4ry's method is really easy, gotta search if you want.
OK, but let's think, you're going to buy a 2012 model phone, has no official support, but it's great. I'm using it for writing this post right now, nothing to complain about.
There's some phones you can look instead of the sola, the Xperia T is a good choice, it's like the reinforced version of the Sola, more space, more resolution, and a kick a** camera. And has support like CM11, no official, but it has.
The Xperia SP, oh god, almost same price and it has his goods and his bads but who cares? It's has official support and a confirmed KitKat update, better processor and it has a great design.
But this is an advice, choose whatever you like, all of them are good phones.

[Q] [Confusion]_Xperia U_should buy !?

Hi,
As subject says.
I am having right now white xperia mini pro But i am planning to buy Xperia U. Should I buy???
would u suggest to buy? if not may u would lik to tell my why
I will be really thankful if u help me, i m really confused
The only real differences are the Software and the design.
My mom got an Xperia U and it's really awesome, the only downsides are the camera (bad in darkness) and no MicroSD card slot.
The Xperia U has a very beautiful design and a camera shutter button. The One V is thin and simple but the chin is very ugly and so unneccesary.
On the software you'll have to tell yourself, I personally like the Sony UI and Sony has some great apps, but also a lot of bloatware, I've only had Xperia Phones so I haven't had a TouchWiz or Sense phone, but from what I've seen I think that Sense is really ugly EXCEPT for Sense 4 (I think the One V has Sense 4) which is actually really beautiful and ICS optimized, also the Xperia U won't get ICS for a few months but if that doesn't concern you then I recommend the Xperia U.

I won't recommend xperia U.Personally I don't have it.My friend recently bought it and he regrets it.The main draw backs are no support of Devs(atleast for now).No ICS out of the box.Although sony promised an update we don't know when(correct me if I'm wrong)
So a better choice would be (according to me) Galaxy Nexus. It has got the best dev support. You get "instant" updates. And stock experience is what I like.So add a few bucks get Gnex.Only down side is bit a lag in 3d games but better than Xperia U.And other alternative is keep your xperia mini and get the Nexus 7 tablet if u aren't committed to a phone .
Hope I helped You.Think twice before buying

I was gonna recommend Galaxy Nexus too but it's a little more expensive.
You're right, Xperia U has a small community, but it's still pretty new and Sony Mobile isn't that big in the US, mostly sold in Sweden and Japan. Also Gingerbread SUCKS but if you're patient you can wait for ICS, and this guy just got ICS for his Xperia Mini so he's used to GB.

I think Gnex is not in India i guess, correct if i am wrong.
The phones just launched and the dev support will be there slowly i think.
Out of the Box Ics is not a importnt thing when u can get it by updating later or sooner
I already got dell streak with 5inch screen and ipad. so i guess i wont go for gnex7 tab

Well you could always hope for a direct Jelly Bean upgrade, but Sony are so lazy with skinning Jelly Bean so I wouldn't think so.
But Jelly beans on Xperia U .......eehhhhh
wen Ics update decreases the RAM then i think JB will kill it. i mean JB will be requireing alot space.
btw, any1 know eta for ics on U

No jb update for 2011 devices

Sony: The whole 2011 Xperia lineup (which got updated to ICS) will not be getting Jelly Bean because Sony "would not be able to guarantee owners of these smartphones the user experience you expect and we demand".

Bad news but as expected... They can make a firm for Xperia J but not for similar phones like Neo/Arc/S, what a waste of money in software departments...
It's really bad news for us. However, Could we request them for Camera Lib for JB?

Don't you get it.Sony's main target is to make money. This is a business after all.Besides 2011 models are outdated now,be happy that they gave us a stable ICS fw(unlike lg,samsung even htc who abandoned most of their 2011 mid end lineups in ICS update).Their main target must be improving and selling more 2012 series and upcoming 2013 xperia models and that's what Sony should target on if they ever want to be a giant in smart phone business-not updating every 2011 model !
Man I was really Hopping for JB
Well, When JB comes to any Xperia hopefully our Friendly Developers in Xda will port it in our device ^_^
i'am not surprised at all ! cost saving is essential for a business
anyway i use the official ROM cuz i get the clearbass and some Sony apps
once a JB ROM has those features ported i'll jump straight to it XD
maybe we'll have to wait until Xperia J get some beans

It's nothing new...Sony must focus on 2012 and the upcoming 2013 Xperia series. However,i'm happy with stock rom (debloated),few mods and apps from Xperia T and 587 fw. It's very smooth and i always have 150-160 mb of free RAM. I've tried CM10 and PACMAN roms, they're very good, but i hate the fact that phone is rebooting when view videos and also i miss the Bravia Engine, because, let's be honest, without Bravia Engine, the Xperias display sucks when viewing videos (at least for me).But the explanation from Sony why the 2011 series is not getting JB,is hilarious (i mean let's compare the Arc S with Xperia J :laugh. However,i think that next year i'll change my Neo with an Xperia V.

I didn't removed everything,i've removed just few useless apps (i've kept fb inside xperia). Beside this,i'm not using the phone for gaming,so,for me is more than enough. And you have 200 mb all the time,or just when you turn on the phone? i have 150-160 all the time. However, before debloating i was having just about 90-100 mb lol
As for me I will move to Apple. Not because their updates to all phones, but because the app devs in android will left many of us. Jelly Bean ask for 60 fps, most of the biggest devs, are working to reach this level. Then, after a few months I will be not suprise with I see an app exclusively for JB. One thing in my defense to move to Apple, Chrome. Chrome is a google app, in IOS even a 3GS can get it. But Here at least ICS. Another example? Snapssed. Snapseed bought by Google, wonderfull app, it works in 3GS, 4, 4S and 5, but for us, it needs at least tegra 2. So, I am leaving, it was good and wonderfull time here with everybody, but I got stressed about it. Every year, this same story and I did not learn. Always buying android phones, and now I found me exactly in the same disgusting situation. I will not try to use custom roms, though I know how to put it in my phone, because even the great effort , they are still buggy. I am not arguing, but it is the truth. Many will say that ICS is enough for me, yes, until now is more than enough. But knowing how android is, soon will be not enough.
So friends I will stay here until sell my Xperia Neo and buy an Iphone 4. After that Goodbye.

with all due respect but I do not think we should rejoice because both have almost the entire line 2011 with ics, I see the hand of everyone being equal in hardware. but for me it's the least we would have to be done to win customers since bought by the promise of neo v ics, however icebug got a way with ginger. because it gave us the applications "nxt"? if not for the developers .... Hey, I just found out that Sony wont provide us with a Jellybean update:

I found it not surprising for Sony doing that. They're late to the game now even for flagship devices.
Most of consumers not even want the update or know about it, only us screaming and crying is not enough force. And most of consumers will screaming and crying with update broke their device so rom need to be bug free to release, it cost a lot sop they dont bother.
I personal think Sony should have 'for experimental testing only' rom release without any warranty when they can not release the official one, I'm sure it take much less effort and can satisfy the community at good-enough level.

not expect Xperia 2011 to 4.1 but still disappointed with sony
Yes it sucks... no official JB for all 2011 devices
will xs get JB?
It's a flagship one.
Sony Mobile has this morning confirmed that Android 4.1 Jelly Bean for its new Xperia devices (Xperia T, Xperia TX and Xperia V) will start to receive the update from the middle of Q1 2013. Sony Xperia devices that launched earlier this year including the Xperia S, Xperia acro S, Xperia ion, Xperia P, Xperia go and Xperia J will be upgraded to Android 4.1 in “due course”. Looks like Xperia miro, Xperia tipo, Xperia tipo dual, Xperia sola and Xperia U users are excluded.
We suspect that the JB launch for the other 2012 Xperia models could take as long as early Q2 2013, given that no concrete information has been given. It’s hard not to commend Sony Mobile for updating many of its mid-range handsets along with their higher-end models. However, Xperia sola and Xperia U owners will rightfully be arguing why they won’t be seeing the update. It’s certainly not a question of hardware specification.

Well, the problem is that unlocked bootloader is an obligatory requirement for using JB custom ROMs. The point of expecting official JB from SONY is because devs. could get official drivers too, so they could cook ROMs for locked and unlocked bootloaders... Or at least that's what I think. There are some people who just can't or don't want to unlock the bootloader, one of them is me.
The reason why I bought a Ray is because I'm (somehow) a SONY fan. In fact, I was going to buy Neo but in the SONY store in my city they didn't have it in stock anymore, so I liked Ray and I got it. Their handsets are beautiful and reliable on their performance. A friend of mine has a Galaxy Ace and that phone is terrible, he has problems with his modem in his house, the phone doesn't connect to it (my Ray does without problems). Plus, no ICS ROMS for it. My business partner has a Samsung Galaxy SII and that piece of s**t is busted, it shows that is charging battery when the phone isn't even plugged! And it doesn't last more than 5 hours...
SONY (and SE) phones have never gave me that kind of problems. But yeah, it's really lame not getting JB, I guess SONY devs weren't smart enough to make project butter to work fine in 2011 line, or it's because all the damn bloatware they want to push affected the performance at the point the phone was a total slowpoke.Or, it's a lame strategy, getting ride of your current device to get a 2012, or even a 2013 one. Whatever is the reason, this is a bad new and a low move from SONY.
Personally, I was going to get Xperia V, but with the rumored prototypes (Odin and Yuga) I'd rather to wait, my Ray still has so much to give and when I get a new phone I want to feel I'm getting a real big upgrade.
Or I dunno, maybe the next Nexus isn't from Samsung anymore... I'd give it a chance
Doesn't matter.... its like we are sticking with a 1ghz phone for a long time since there a cheap dual core phones out there... so I guess its okay and who cares about jb on a 3.3 inch phone

The problem is that custom rom cookers don't have the latest libs for the HDMI and camera, for example, so they can't get them to work properly or at all. And while Sony has released all the libs for the Xperia S to the custom community, they won't do that for the Xperia 2011 line. So, no official nor unofficial solution for getting a 100% usable JB, though the handsets are fully capable of running it even better than ICS.
It's no possible for devs export it from XS?
I think XS will have jellybean or not?
sony must see thread [WIP][ROM][JB 4.1.2][Pa+Aokp+Cm] P.A.C All in 1 ROM !!!!!! Jellybean alpha, its 992 replies and 142.577 views, it's shows how love customers like they device

[Q] Xperia Mini - Xperia Ray

Hello all great people ! Sorry for opening a new thread, but i would like your opinions.. Tomorrowi am going to change my Xperia Mini for an Xperia Ray for 20-30 €....is this change good? Or maybe shouldn't i do this, and keep my Xperia Mini?
Thanks in advance.
Actually Xperia ray is better than mini in every aspect but buying a 2011-line model in 2013 is a bit weird...Anyways please don't create these kinds of threads in general section
Best Regards,
AJ

why do you want to go to another phone that has a same specification? both of them use 512mb ram only and single core processor. i think it will be outdated soon.

I sold my Arc to get a Ray and so glad I did, I think it (Ray) will be the only Phone I've ever owned that I won't be selling on as it's a gorgeous little device that does everything I need, although will still be updating to a new Xperia ASAP, just not sure which, the Z is a bit big for me and if Sony stays with the current trend of releasing mini tablet sized Phones then I'll happily stick with my Ray.

Sadly, with 1ghz single core cpu, ray will never run ubuntu mobile. And also 512mb ram makes me little bit disappointed. but overall with that price , ray offer a good spec.

[Q] Buying Xperia U or Xperia P?

I'm thinking of buying the Xperia U but I have a few questions.
How is the call sound quality, headphone quality and loudspeaker quality like?
How is the screen quality like and how are the graphics like on high end HD games?
Is the browsing very fast on this phone? Does zooming in and out on desktop websites lag a lot?
Has anyone's screen stopped working or has their been any hardware failures that have happened to a lot of xperia u's?
Finally, how long do you think it will be before the phone becomes out of date? I want to use it for maybe 3 years after purchase so I need to know if it is future proof.
Sorry for asking so many questions but I want to be entirely sure the phone is ideal for me. Thanks if you bothered to read this far and double thanks if you answered any of my questions.
In order.
Brilliant,
Brilliant but storage is an issue
Good
Nope
1 year at most.
Press thanks if it helps!

I would recommend you to increase the budget a bit and buy Xperia P instead Xperia U.
Cause 1GB RAM will give you better smoothness than XU's 512 MB RAM.
Also SONY is still keeping XP in their mind while releasing Official updates like JB. [XU have Unofficial JB Port]
No offense to the XU users. It's just what i think that while buying android handset, it's better to go for a better hardware spec. Off course if u plan to increase your budget.
Guy above is right, i still regret buying xperia sola, when i could pay 30 more euros and buy xperia p... It is MUCH better and worth the money... I also think that its developing community is more active than xperia u... No offense of course
Also, u should know that a device like mine it is said that because sony reached the target of sales for this device, now they dont give a damn about it.... We all rely on xda to get jelly bean while xperia P DOES HAVE official jelly bean from sony...
Finally, technology is evolving SO FAST that u need to buy an expensive device so that it can compete with future device... (my opinion)
Does the extra 512MB RAM make a big difference from xperia u to xperia p? The processor and GPU are the same but stuff like screen and camera is better on the xperia p
Trust me, xperia sola with 512 mb of ram barely gives 150mb available, logically xperia p should give u at LEAST 300 mb of free ram...
As far as i know, true gaming devices must have at least 1gb of ram...
Any other comments on the Xperia u? What do you use it for on a daily basis?
If u dont play heavy games then it will do the job BUT IF U:
1) Are sure that 4 gb of storage is not enough (like me). Remember xperia u cannot take sd card...
2) Want to play heavy games, i am pretty sure that xperia p will do better
If u meet either the first or second condition then i urge u to buy xperia p but if u dont then feel free to buy xperia p... My sola is the same as xperia u but i can use an sd card and i must say that since i am not a hard core gamer it does the job pretty damn well
Does the xperia p have a slightly yellow tinted screen? In some videos I have seen the the white looks slightly yellow. Can anyone with an xperia P confirm whether the white is pure white or tinted yellow? Also, after upgrading the firmware to jellybean on Xperia P, do you get various problems with apps such as gallery app not working and does the phone lag or does it get faster? Sorry for all the questions. I just want to be sure before I purchase it

Actually there is no device exists which is completely error free. You just have to make it right by your self. The situation is quite same for Android Update also. Check the General Section, you will find a thread there named as - Xperia P JB Review.
Many users posted there JB experience there. That should be useful for you. And as for the Yellow Tint, Sony took care of that issue, after first few shipments of all of their models.
Hey guys ! I'm Running rooted and S-off HTC Incredible S. Its okay but outdated now. We are fully up to date in software, but the hardware is behind. Looking for a new phone is so difficult right now..
I have a budget of $300-$400 Aus. Samsung SIII is a little old now, N4 has no storage.. I wandering is Sony a good option? Would you recomend any Sony device in that price range?
Thanks

Call sound quality-good
Headphone quality-sounds good , the default headphones aren't good enough u'll surely need to buy a new 1
Loudspeaker-Totally disappointed by the loudspeaker
screen quality-Display is just awesome with 280ppi
Browsing used to lagg when I had too many apps installed..otherwise it works good
No hardware faults as such
Hahahaha there is nothing called as future-proof..U is already outdated, maybe you should go for P instead.
