Nova Launcher - Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) Themes and Apps

I've read in numerous threads around here about using Nova Launcher instead of Touchwiz to improve overall performance. What functionality is lost in going to Nova if any? I'm a little new to all of this so I apologize if this is a rather basic question.

Only functionality I've lost is Samsung Widgets, like S-Note widget. But all S-Pen functionality, Air Command, Multi-Window, etc., works flawlessly.

Great, we get to keep all the goodies and gain in speed! That's like getting thin throug a diet of fried food and candy! !!

Whoops, that's correct. I was thinking of Action Memo widget.

i seriously doubt it makes a difference over all. only if you're swiping home screens on constantly going back and forth looking for apps will you see a difference. it won't increase you fps in games or make benchmarks significantly faster. i use nova btw.

Agreed. I use it for its flexibility with gestures and the like. Honestly hours much time do you spend on your home screen?

I use Nova on my Note 3 ...on the 10.1 I just use Touchwiz. It's good enough for Tablets.

I've been hearing you guys talk about it for years now. I tried it before and didn't really appreciate it. Long time ago.
I just slammed it on there and I gotta say, why did I put up with TW all this time!
I set the Grid for my home screen and apps drawer and the Text was perfect unlike the current TW hack.
It imported my TW settings!
You can backup and restore your Setup, Duhhh, freakin' Duhhh... I'm sick of setting of 7 home screens and multiple folders when the ROM chefs start really cooking!
So far I haven't missed much from TW, nothing that outweighs the advantages of Nova.
It doesn't loop around in a circle but I'll live with that if there's not a way around it.

If you like the "looping", you can set infinite scroll in Nova Pro settings.

Plus you have infinite scroll for dock too, under Settings/Dock. And don't forget gestures. With 2 simple gestures I hide the notification bar and the dock, and enjoy nice wallpaper on full screen.

Maybe Im blind - is there a setting on Nova to hide apps in the app drawer?

Are you referring to being able to swipe pages continuously? This can be done in stock.
I do like that it adds pages as needed.

Best thing to do is just install it an see for yourself. It's not like a launcher is a permanent change to your device.
I use it , but I go back and forth between it and touchwiz...I like to keep it fresh nova is great software.

Anyway to change the settings somewhere to allow to switch to tablet UI, so that the status bar is at the bottom..?

Love Sense 3.0, but HATE the app drawer? Fix it with this app.

Not mine, just found it on Reddit, which linked me back to XDA.
XDA user "xuso" created the app called 'Alt Drawer', and it's exactly what it sounds like...A "normal" app drawer, without the 'pauses', that is very customizable, and works in landscape or portrait..
The full, ad-free version is available to download here on XDA..

I gotta disagree. Doesn't replace the function of the app drawer button, so you need to have a separate shortcut on your homescreen. Redundant to me.
As soon as it can remove to the default drawer button ill like it.

Not sure why you guys feel the need to post about liking the new app drawer? It's fine, this thread/app obviously isn't for you....
Some of us think the new app drawer sucks and it is a cheap way to get rid of the scrolling lag that's always in it with a Sense rom (I know some of you have magic phones and have "never had lag issues")
Anyway, the app is a great idea but it is incredibly slow and laggy. Hopefully updates are incoming..

Use in combination with Spare Parts, and also setting app drawer background to 'low quality' in the app itself, and it's pretty zippy.

I'm with you. I don't like the app drawer in our version of Sense 3.0. I use an app from the Market called Smart Taskbar. It allows you to reach it's version of the app drawer from any screen or from within an app. When it opens, you can set it to show all your apps and you can scroll through them as we did pre-Sense 3.0. Oh, and for those that liked Tommytomatoe's 5 column app drawer, it has 5 columns, too. Smart Taskbar allows you to also set up shortcuts to do different things, like call a certain person, or open your messaging program ready to text a certain person, etc, but you need the pro key to do that. (It's about $4.) There's a free version as well. You can also put widgets on Smart Taskbar's screens, leaving your home screen less cluttered. I guess for me, it saves time because I can open it from any screen I'm on, instead of having to navigate back to a screen where rosie is showing...
I love the app drawer. I don't like the page up down. If I could just fling. The drawer would be the best I've used.

Launchers!!!

Im in need of a new launcher :/ i currently have launcher pro plus but doesnt look like its gunna get updated anytime soon. i have tried go launcher but it was meh. i have heard great things about ADW though. Opinions?
I have used all of those launchers, and I keep coming back to ADW. I think it runs the smoothest, has great theme options, and more customization options (IMHO).
I would definitely suggest try it out. The great thing is that you can download Homesmack, which is an app designed to help you toggle between launchers easily. That way, if you don't like ADW, you can easily switch back to another launcher.
EDIT: Also, this thread has A LOT of great info on launchers for you... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1428022
I have used a bunch of other launchers and I use both Launcher Pro Plus and ADW EX. LPP is my main launcher and ADW is used as my car dock in landscape mode. No other launchers really suit me. Even though LPP hasn't seen an update for a long time it's still the fastest and smoothest launcher to me.
Regina Launcher is not and got some nice options
Hi Launcher is amazing and is completely different from other launchers, instead of changing the homescreen, you can change part of it while keeping the other part as it is.
ICS Launcher by Team Syndicate is very good
I dig ADW Ex. I've been using it way before I even thought about rooting my phone, lol. It has vast customization options to tweak your phone how you want it. I can't go without it
Have y'all heard of launcher2?

I used launcher pro for quite a while, but after going without an update for months and months, I switched to go launcher. I liked go launcher, but there was a small delay whenever I clicked on the app drawer. Eventually I purchased and switched to ADW launcher. In my opinion, it is the best of the 3 I tried. So many themes available, and so much you can customize. Also runs the smoothest with a live wallpaper running.

I love go launcher ex. Came with a rom I flashed a while back and now I am addicted to the features.

I think launchers like launcher pro, ADW, Go Launcher, etc. are pretty much all the same. You get the multiple screens with widgets and an app drawer. I get bored with that stuff sometimes. I've enjoyed Go Launcher. But when I get bored with that, I switch to Launcher 7. Its really nice if you theme it right.
GO Launcher is kinda nice. I used it for awhile and really enjoyed all of the GO branded apps it allowed you to use. Im currently using ADW EX and I like it quite a bit. GO felt a little too gimmicky and unrefined in comparison to ADW EX. It wasnt as smooth. There would also be random times when GO somehow wouldnt work and I would be reverted to my old launcher.
If I were you I'd try the free version of ADW and GO then you could make a better pick.

Go to Apex settings, Behavior Settings and then Screen Orientation.

You can create folders on each page to hold more apps. Just drag one icon on top of another, and the launcher will create a new folder and ask you to name it. That way you can have all your apps on your launcher desktop, organized in folders.

I highly recommend Smart Launcher
and
For lockscreen if you want a JB look, go with Holo Locker

I read some of the reviews on Google play and a good amount of people said it's not all that great

You can get Nova for free minus some of the bells and whistles which is really resource light and is basic Nexus 7 design.
As far as lock screen I can't recommend as I pattern lock my screen.

Launcher and Locker
I have used many launchers in the past including Launcher 8 and Smart Launcher. However I prefer Apex Launcher over the latter because of the simplicity of the applications UI and the ability to customize down to the size of icons. I am currently running Apex Launcher and it doesn't seem to drain battery more than other launchers I have tested. Here are some of my home screens.
I went for a minimalistic look and used the option to disable the notification bar and dock. The notification bar can be accessed by a fast swipe down and the app drawer (also customizable) can be accessed by a fast swipe up. I used ZooperWidget for many of my widgets and SMPL White icons for ditching the colored app icons.
As for the locker I installed Holo Locker which gives a very clean look to the phone.
The paid version can be customized to show SMS and call notifications and I believe you need it to change to shortcuts as well.
All these apps can be found on the Play Store SMPL White icons and Holo Locker being the only paid ones. Using these two together gives the device a very sleek look. I would recommend them to anyone who is looking to improve upon stock UI without rooting!
I prefer Holo Launcher HD, Nova and Apex are too... Feature filled for me. Also I find that Holo HD uses less RAM and is smoother with less redraws on my P769
If you want somerhing a bit different, you can have a look at Atom launcher, it's one of my favourites

I use Nova Launcher and for the lockscreen, I purchased Widgetlocker.

This Droid world is filled with many choices, so many that i feel spoiled.
Sony Xperia Z, MiHome, MiSpace, SoHo, Nova, Apex, Holo... these are the launchers I have used, and most of the times return to Xperia Z's home launcher, I wont tell you to go and install it, but I would rather tell you to "Explore to find out what suits your taste most!"
Happy Exploring!!
Xperia Z launcher has many features.....i prefer nova....saves battery.

Right now using Huawei Emotion Launcher, kind of modified MiHome launcher and feels slick and fluid, and the weather live wallpaper with auto wedgie sync is pretty sick!!
