[Q] dell streak 5 army edition - Streak 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

okay so i recently acquired an dell streak 5. i am in the service and the army calls it a panthr. i want to wipe all the army stuff off and try and use it as a personal device. any help would be appreciated. thx.

First, show us some pictures of this as we've never seen one. Second, the guides here should work just as well on your unit as any other Streak, unless Dell made some enhancements for the military version to prevent rooting the device. Last, take a backup of that firmware.

okay will do as soon as i get a chance. when i go into the settings, it says its running on android 2.2 os.

Froyo.2.2....that sucks. I was hoping something had been updated for the army's streaks.

okay so, change to situation. woke up this morning and the dell streak turned and was stuck on the dell logo boot screen. never left there. it has continued to do its boot loop. i tried to flash a new android 2.2 os; didnt work. tried to flash a new rom: didnt work. i also tried to root it using superoneclick, also didnt work. im out of ideas for doing a recovery for the device. i kinda figured the root process would fail due to the fact that superoneclick needs the phone to be on and open to work and authorize but i gave it a go. any more ideas would be appreciated. thanks in advance.

Replied in your other thread.

Try the one click root on the eris android development page
Thanks for the one click tip. That looks great. Once I have rooted, is it possible to upgrade from the 2.1 OTA to the kaos V30?
Thanks again, I am now rooted and trying to figure out the best way to switch to kaos

Download the Kaos V30.
Move it to the root folder of your SD card.
Make sure your phone is charged very well - 100% is a good number
Boot to Amon_RA
(in Amon_RA) Perform a Nandroid backup before you do anything else
(in Amon_RA) Wipe data/factory reset
(in Amon_RA) Flash the Kaos V30 ROM
Instructions for the last four steps, including copious pictures, are given in this post over on Android Forums.
Good luck.

Thanks for every ones help. I am up and running Kaos V30!
None of the one click tips work for me
What am I doing wrong?
I have an Eris with the OTA 2.1 OS and I would like to Root my phone and maybe update to 2.2 or 2.3.
I tried the 1 click app on the market, did not work, Re booted anfter install the recovery screen said the image was wrong or no image at all.
Not exactly sure what I am doing wrong.
Does someone have a better way. I have tried a good portion of the ideas off the developement page.
Please Help,
Thanx,

I'm thinking that you didn't actually restart the phone, but tried to restart in Recovery. With 1-click the steps are:
- run the 1click app
- restart the phone - do not start in recovery, but restart like you were going to make a phone call
- shut down the phone
It's that second step that installs Amon's Recovery.
Reading the instructions on 1-click, it's easy to see why people miss that, as it doesn't clearly say to restart the phone without going into Recovery.
Anyway, at this point, you have run 1-click. So, start your phone without trying to start in Recovery. When that happens, the phone will get Amon's and you'll be ready to Nandroid what you have and flash new ROMs.

starting over, please help

hi i just got an atrix, switched over from jailbroken iphone.
I went through rooting it and installed rom manager but when i try to reset permissions i get an error and when i try to reboot into recovery it says "failed to boot 2 starting rsd" and hangs.
I just want to reset the phone to stock and start the process over, can someone give me some help on this....
Id like to install the ninja rom. but im lost about what order to do things, root, backup/nandroid, and install new rom etc.
thanks
First, it would be nice to know what was on the phone when you started? 1.8.3, 1.2.6 or 4.9.1?
Next, where are you trying to go? You installed the ROM Manager, does that mean you were going to try to use a particular ROM?
Probably more important, the ROM Manager is not fully compatible with the Atrix (see thread).
Before going forward, I would suggest reading (and re-reading) this thread about the bricking potential. Don't get me wrong, it is possible to add custom ROMs to your Atrix, you just need to be cautious.
At this point, it doesn't sound like your Atrix is hard bricked. However, to help out, we need a little more information.

ya its not hard bricked, i pulled out the battery and it starts and runs normal. it says its android ver. 2.3.4 and baseband 1.77.30p build number 4.5.91
you know to be honest im pretty happy with it out of the box... adding non-market apps would be nice and id like to be able to make full backups to boot from if i need to. id like to delete some apps i dont need.
it seemed like there was a problem with the rooting i did cause some stuff wasnt working like 'shootme' screengrab app and the permissions fixing wasnt working.
thanks for your help i really appreciate it!
You can try this to root:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1182871
I don't know if that allows for enabling side-loading or not.

Enabling non-market apps is a built in feature for 2.3.4, go to Settings -> Applications, and put a check mark next to "Unknown Sources".
For rooting, try Gingerbreak.
For backing up, there's a CWM version that doesn't need an unlocked bootloader, but I am unlocked so I don't have experience installing it / using it.
Since most people are unlocked, I am not sure if the non-unlocked version of CWM was kept up to date, it might be obsolete / non functional by now.

You can root at any point. Gingerbreak should work fine if you have usb debugging enabled.
how can i do a factory restore, setting it back to how it came out of the box? also, any tips on maintenance to keep it running fast?
thanks again for all the help

That largely depends on your setup BL / CWM ,etc...
You might wanna read this guide to clear up many things:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1154600

[Q] bricked once..let's not do it again. 4.1.83 @ 2.2.2

I bricked one Atrix already a few weeks ago, and have since gotten another...(don't wanna think about it)..
I had toyed with unlocking it, and 'rooted' using the gingerbreak method. I was then, bored, one day and installed CWM paid version(Since I had it on my Nexus One, and it popped up under 'my apps'). Out of curiosity I installed the bootloader via CWM, thinking it would fail before it broke anything..wrong.. It froze after a reboot, but after taking the battery out and back in came back up. Didn't think any more about it, and figured i'd finish the unlocking/flashing part some other time..
Meanwhile the annoying pending system update kept going off, and I inadvertently clicked download... it downloaded, so I figured might as well install and not worry about roms since with root I was able to use the google adhoc wifi apk, which is what I care about most. The install was stuck in an infinite loop. It would 'fail to load RSD', if you took the battery out it boot to android then reboot automatically for system update over and over. I tried using the RSD lite program at this point to flash back to stock rom, and ended up hard bricked...
So, forgive me for being a complete noob as I never had an issue with my nexus one. I am at 4.1.83, android 2.2.2. and baseband 1.7.15.. Which of the many tutorials and post should I follow? How safe are they? Did I brick because I had a partial 2.3.x install, and flashed back to a pre 2.3 base? I've read many post, but definitely a bit gun shy of bricking another Atrix. The phone keeps bugging me to update, and I keep hitting 'cancel'.
I'd like to unlock the boot loader for custom roms.
I'm also a heavy linux user, majority of tutorials seem to only imply windows with RSD lite? can this not be done with adb, and fastboot via linux?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1154600
I would personally go HERE Read through the entire post, then read it again. And go with the ATT 2.3.4 pudding+root
That of course is after reading and re-reading THIS post! (also linked in the post above mine.
Just my opinion.. and make sure you read and nkow what to expect!

That references 4.5.91 and unless I missed it, doesn't explicitly state it's backwards compatible with 4.1.83 and 2.2.2. is it?
Should I update first, to be at those levels and just know not to flash to an earlier build(pre 2.3.4/4.5.91)?

Nope, don't update. It's safer to unlock BL while you are still at 4.1.83, you just need to download the correct unlock file from the pudding thread.
Otherwise the unlocking steps are exactly the same.
The easiest steps to unlocking are here:
http://briefmobile.com/how-to-unlock-the-atrix-4g-bootloader
From there you can flash CWM in one minute.
From there you can flash any rom via CWM in two minutes.
Good luck and don't do anything stupid.

How to completly go stock

First of all yes I have searched a lot on google and on xda. but I was unable to find anything to suite my case.
I recently rooted stock 2.2.2 and went for a custom RoM...gingerbread OpenOptimus RoM.
I now want to go stock but I am unable to do so because the LG PC suite either sais I already have the newest version, either that the update is unavailable for my phone ( this happens when trying to upgrade it after I flashed a froyo RoM)
Is there any safe and easy way of unrooting and going stock using the lG ps suite? I recall it working even though my lg was rooted on froyo 2.2.2 and I was able to update it to stock gingerbread using the pc suite.
Thank you in advance.

And wrong topic in wrong forum
You still missed alot you must use LG utils and flash kdz file ..
Sent from SWEATTAIMIS PHONE USING HIS OWN ROM l0l
Can you please offer more details?
Its pretty easy:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1060121
I followed that procedure and for now I am stuck in Emergency Mode for a couple of minutes. Until now everything worked as it should....but I wonder why my screen didn't go blank.
Anyway...I find it stupid that the recovery option from LG PC suite does not in fact have anything to do with recovering your phone to its original state. Rather missleading nevertheless...
Later Edit: In the end I reached to the desired result. The procedure from the above link worked to the point in wich the phone had to turn off and needed to be restarted. In my case it didn't shut down, but luckly the firmware was downgraded and I am using the LG Updater to go to official gingerbread right now.
Thanks to everyone that helped...
Sorry for 2x post.
Well....as it seems....the update almost completed but for some reason it stopped, so I followed the instructions and disconnected the cable> pulled out the battery> put it back> power on the phone.
The problem is now that the phone won't power up at all, not even to LG Logo or something. It's like it's fully discharged but it is not the case, because it had 100% battery.
And even if it was fully discharged, when plugged in the phone should turn on and stay at ,,battery charging" screen.
Any suggestions?
Try this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=883314
Worked for me
You will have to get your PCB replaced from the service centre as the phone is probably a brick by now. I got mine replaced twice under warranty, so I guess it shouldn't be a problem.
The KDZ method is a hit-or-miss thing - I succeeded restoring the stock ROM twice, but failed twice as well, so I won't ever be using that method again.
For posterity, the closest to a stock rom backup you can get is by taking a manual backup of your recovery and a NAND backup of your ROM (after flashing custom recovery) soon after getting a new PCB.

That is correct I bricked my gf's phone... Oh well, at least she didn't get mad. She wanted the phone replaced anyway.
I will go with her and get another device, as this one had random reboots no matter if it was rooted/unrooted and regardless of custom or stock roms.
ps: It didn't even start in Emergency Mode...and It was because of the LG updater which actually ****ed it up.
After the KDz Tool the phone was still running fine.
Oh well, thanks to everyone for their support. I am so glad I don't personally own an LG...everything regarding it is just wrong... from the way of rooting/adding custom recoveries, the LG pc suite, to the endless possibilities of bricking it.
My Wildfire's only change of getting ,,bricked" is by dropping a brick on it

If you use a fruitcake, you'll be fine. If you wipe all data/system/etc and use the sbf, you will also be fine. The worst I've heard of is a soft brick that takes a hell of a lot of time and effort to fix. So, I'd go with fruitcake if I were you. I did it yesterday, and it worked like a charm.

I thought there was a way to officially update the atrix to 2.3.6 since that is the official version O/S it supports?

Yeah I just went into "about phone" and hit update... what's wrong with that?
Can't you still root 2.3.6?
If your phone is working fine now do yourself a favor and leave it alone. OTA update has caused many problems like killing wifi and many people have had problems playing with roms and you can't go back. This is good advice.

I was subscribed to this and just want to add my data point:
on unlocked (bootloader) phone ("Unlocked" printed on boot screen), upgraded to 2.3.6 over the air. This caused Unlocked to disappear from boot screen but I believe I was still technically unlocked. I went through the unlock process again just to be safe. which put "unlocked" back on boot screen, then unrooted by normal flash recovery method, and running fine an dandy all along
I did have a problem with a bad sim card previously, which made it seem like 2.3.6 was a problem, but it is not, for me at least.
