Is it only the international One that's getting the 5.5 update right now?

The current rollout is only for the INTL version. I wouldn't be surprised if ATT doesn't give you Sense 5.5, since they just updated to 4.3 with Sense 5 not terribly long ago. I'd guess IF they update to Sense 5.5, it won't be until after the MAX has been out for a little while. They have to have some incentive to get people to buy it...

gotcha...I had an htc one a while back and got rid of it, and I regretted it...so I have another now and have just been running it stock and its been doing everything I need it to.
I guess I will just have to root and run a sense rom and gain the 5.5 benefits.

I wouldn't root just for 5.5 unless there's something really specific you're wanting. BUT, I say root that sucker since you've had one before and you're used to it. It will open up a whole new world of One possibilities. And while s off is available I would definitely take advantage of it if you ever think you might want to root or tinker with roms and kernels.
I realize rooting and unlocking/s-off isn't for everyone, but if you're inclined to open up the doors to custom software, the development on this phone is UNBELIEVABLE, if you're watching the dev forums in this section I know it's not a lot of activity, but that's because once unlocked all the development in the regular HTC One section can be used.
As a sidenote: My phone and ATT network like the new firmware that was rolled out to the international version. I'm getting service inside the building where it was a dead zone before, although it's not a very strong signal, and my LTE speeds went up a lot, both upload and download. Just in case you do root it and you're wondering about that.

Yes my other one was rooted, soff, Ll that. I know the procedure.
What rom or ruu did you flash to get the new radio and firmware.
Also I have hboot 1.55....is it s-off able?

I thought the same about rooting but since I've always rooted my past android devices, I did. I have such a better experience rooted (using TB, Greenify + framework modules).
What makes me think to update sense 5 to 5.5, is if I have to delete everything like last time (RUU method) I might skip sense update.

I've been thinking about Rooting myself, but haven't done it because I've been pretty much pleased with everything so far....... but I think that I may just go ahead to root it.

So as the title suggests, this will be my first time rooting any phone. I attempted to root my HTC Inspire 4G, nearly bricked it, and kinda gave up on the whole thing.
Now, with my HTC One loaded with unecessary AT&T apps and other stupid bloatware, I find myself in the same position. I know there are many guides for rooting the One, but are there any that are particularly newbie-friendly? Also, I understand that after rooting, OTA updates are impossible. My question is...is 4.2.2 available currently? What about 4.3? And most importantly, how easy/difficult is it to install an update?

If you have never rooted, an HTC device is probably a little intimidating compared to other manufacturers.
Now, if you just get a guide and follow it to a t, you'll be fine.
You can always get thr phone back to a stock state if you want an ota update, buy if you are running a custom rom, that dev will typically update that particular rom with the ota update.

anyhow, i myself was in the same boat as you last week.
my main gripe with the stock HTC one is the fact that you cannot "wake up" the phone any other way
except for the power button. so annoying- it was driving me crazy.
also i have unlimited ATT data plan, and so my wifi tether was dead, and wanted to mod for that as well.
anyhow, i was on the fence regarding rooting my phone, but then i
finally ran into the BULLETPROOF kernel thread here at XDA, and i had to have it.
as i began to research my quest to brick my phone, i ran into this guy on youtube: qbking77
he has some great videos on youtube that will give you the exact instructions and directions on
what you will need to do to root your HTC phone.
His English is easy to understand, he has a support webpage/blog with links to everything you need, very very good and easy tutorial, probably what convinced me to do it.
so here are the steps that he gives:
#1. UNLOCK BOOTLOADER HERE:

BAM!...you are done rooting.
He uses TWRP (custom recovery), and TWRP has been an easy interface for me, no gripes.
so, anyhow, after you have gone through those steps, if I can suggest a couple other things I ran into.
one of the main reasons I was wanting to root my phone, was to install the bulletproof kernel.
this kernel allows for you to “swipe to unlock” your HTC phone.
it’s super cool, and that was the first thing I wanted to install.
I went ahead and installed it, happy as can be…
everything seemed cool, but after a day or so, went to open my camera,
and what do you know, black camera death screen, NO CAMERA!
I was like WTH, ???
jumped back in the forums (guess I should have researched a little further)
and I am not sure why, or what the deal is, but there is a glitch with the kernel and 4.1.2 android version. some people were fine but there are a lot like me and had the camera error.
so long story longer,
I ended up trying to re-install every single bulletproof rom version that was available,
still no luck.
finally i PM'd another user on these forums, he said he installed the ANDROID REVOLUTION HD (4.2.2 ROM)
i went ahead and installed, then I installed the bulletproof kernel m7-3.4 (for 4.2.2)
and what do you know, 100% just fine, absolutely sweet.
only other thing I’ve done was install the ULTIMATE RIT_ARHD_12.1 (HD icon them package)
and man, my phone has a whole new life, and I am absolutely loving it.
anyhow, hope that helps,
those qbking77 vids are the best thing to use in my opinion,
(oh and qbking77 has a vid to install "free wifi hotspot for the HTC ONE"....took all but 5 minutes and that was the icing on the cake!)

id like to throw my post in here if I could. I bought a factory unlocked One from htc.com and thought I was going to get updates from htc. They recently told me I still had to wait for updates from my carrier (att). with this bit of news Ive decided I want to put a stock google 4.2 on my one. Are these instructions posted above good for me to use? sense is something I can do without, has someone made a rom with 4.2 with sense as well?

I have the ViperOne rom, it's 4.2.2 and Sense 5....
Best advice is take a step back and give it a few days. You will absorb everything there is in time. And if you **** up it Can be fixed ^_^

its close to stock with little tweaks here and there and its ALL I have been using. The Dev Mike1986 updates it rather often!
Plus if you are alittle worried at the moment, I would recommend keeping it simple and not worrying about SuperCID and S-off...while I to am both of these things, it isnt really necessary
You don't need to be rooted to wake your device with something beside the power button.
I use 'Power On Volume' and my volume button wakes my device. I use a different app that allows me to lock my HTC One with a touchscreen button.

I picked up the HTC One a few days ago from AT&T (coming from iOS). Like 9aj9, some things were finicky like not being able to wake the phone other than the power button, I can see the gripes with the volume button placement and are easily triggered. I got a slim case to give me space away from the volume rocker.
Anyway, I was going to flash to the Home2Wake kernel, but the bulletproof kernel sound even better! However, seems it's most stable if Android Revolution HD ROM in installed (is that the right word?).
So, I have one question before I proceed - can I revert the HTC One to stock 4.1.2 after flashing to Revolution ROM? I'm asking because I am still within the return window and would like the option of getting it back to stock if I wanted to return it.
Im pretty certain u can revert, when u go through qbking77's vids, i believe he has a vid in reverting back to stock.
But one main thing is u have to run a full backup once u have TWRP installed....

Not needed. The firmware that comes with the phone works on 4.2 roms also (the old If it isnt broken dont fix it comes to mind here ). Some of us just like to have the latest greatest everything so I did the firmware update as well, but like I said, its not necessary.
Also, when installing a 4.2 rom keep in mind that the file system will be different as 4.2 has support for multiple users.
Maybe I caught you before you went ahead and rooted, but it was honestly a piece of cake. I pretty much followed what 9aj9 wrote (thread 3). If you follow qbking77's videos, you can't go wrong. I used a W7 machine, even thought I usually use a Mac, but qbking77 used a W7, so I was able to do each step exactly. I did download the most recent SuperSU (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053) instead of the older version form the site.
Anyway take your time, make sure you have a few hours. Also, realize you will lose everything when you unlock the boot loader. I backed up most things with Helium, but you have to re-install all the apps, Helium just backs up the data.

Thing is, I kinda like the new sense (minus the launch and blinkfeed) and I'm really wanting to stay on stock if it's possible. I know that whenever the new update arrives I'll have the coveted % but what about daydream?
If anyone gots some info on that I'd really aprreciate it.
Oh and I also really miss the battery/power menu on vanilla android. Does anyone know if there is an app or a mod that I can use to get the same experience?

I think many of us AT&T One owners here on XDA are running 4.2.2 ROMs from the International HTC One section due to their perfect compatibility (no need to change CID, go S-OFF or flash firmwares to run ROMs from that section, and all AT&T-specific issues from the 4.1.2 days are resolved) since the AT&T section is a ghost town in comparison. That is how you have your cake and eat it too, as your title says.
To answer your first question, the stock based HTC One 4.2.2 ROMs do have built-in daydream and stock battery %, so the AT&T update to 4.2.2 (if and when it ever comes) should have these features also.
I know you said you wanted to stay on stock if possible, but keep in mind that AT&T is holding back this phone's potential. Since you're already used to 4.2.2, and we can all wait on AT&T until the cows come home, you may want to consider just biting the bullet and flashing a stock rooted HTC Sense 4.2.2 ROM. There's one here in the AT&T dev section that is an excellent option if you're wanting to stay stock, based on the latest build from HTC. The stock AT&T radio works fine with it BTW.
In the new 4.2.2 ROMs, HTC has gotten rid of the black menu bar in apps by officially providing the option of mapping a long-pressing of the home button to the menu function. If you end up finding out that long pressing the home button intermittently acts like a single press, upgrading to the matching 4.2.2 firmware helps significantly with improving the sensitivity of the capacitive touch buttons, but that's getting a bit ahead of ourselves...just wanted to mention it. However the new firmware won't work with the stock 4.1.2 AT&T ROM.

Nevermind, I got it. Although, now I'm kinda scared to flash it cuz since I rooted there's been some screwy things going on. I was using Titanium Backup to delete some att apps and some of them keep coming back like Facebook and Twitter. When I go to superuser it says that it needs to update binary and then it tries but then it says it can't and that it's a problem. I can manually go into TWRP and flash stuff as I did with a script that supposedly wiped the crapware from att but I'm still not sure about flashing something custom.
any ideas or should I just go for it.
Also, I'm guessing that since it didn't give a limk for Gapps then I don't need them right?

Stock kernel has write protection for the /system folder. You'll need to flash a custom ROM that has the write protection removed. Much easier to flash a custom ROM than to mess with the **** AT&T has done to it.

Yes that is the International section.
If you want to stay on the stock rooted ROM, you can just disable those apps instead of deleting them, using the method built into Android (Settings>>Apps>>find your app and disable it), or alternatively you can freeze them in Titanium. This doesn't require write access to the system partition. These disabled apps will still occupy a small amount of file space but they won't be running anymore and using up RAM, and their respective icons will be gone.
You can flash a custom ROM from either the AT&T section or the International section. The International section has a much better selection and the threads are much more active. There are rooted stock ROMs (Sense and Google Edition) and custom ROMs (Sense, Google Edition and AOSP). AOSP ROMs on the One are pretty good now but there are a few issues with them, and you lose features like Beats and Zoe if you care about those things.
you can still get the HTC Sense camera for GPE. Works for me, with the exception that I can't click to my gallery from the camera itself (but the pictures do save there).

Me too, but I used Zoe's before, and they dont work with the GPE framework...too many files missing. You can search through the forums to try various things based on the GE rom you've flashed though. I ended up going to ARHD, which has all the features OP asked for anyway.
I was just at my folks' house for the holiday weekend and realized that my dad has been using my old Sprint Evo 3D. My job took my to Shanghai last summer for ten months, so I picked up a GNex and left my Evo in a box at my parents' house when I left the country. I was surprised to see my dad using it, and I noticed it's running a very old version of cyanogenmod. I'm sure that thing is pretty buggy in terms of software compatibility by now, so I want to get him on something a little more current and stable.
He is not tech savvy at all, so simpler is better. I've been exclusively on Nexus devices for over a year now, so I'm pretty out of the loop in terms of what is happening with Sense and the rom options available for this phone. Should I just return him to stock and make sure he has all the OTA updates? Or is there another option that anyone can recommend? Ideally, whatever I put on there should require as little maintenance/upkeep as possible. Thanks for your suggestions.

Hi,
It only depends on what your dad is going to prefer.
I think is now ok with cyanogenmod look so you can give a try to Johnylist roms where almost everything is working on last android version, but needs to be often updated
If you are looking for a stable rom with everything that works, including 3d then for me, best sense roms are actually yoda's or coolexe's ones.
I think a sense 3.6 based rom is the better choice for your dad.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll read through some of these threads and see what looks best for him. Do Johnylist roms have integrated OTA updates, or would the updates need to be downloaded and flashed in recovery?

As far as i can say ( and remember lol) they have to be flashed in recovery, but you can dirty flash.

I'm running Dirty Unicorns with 4.2.2 and haven't had a single issue. That being said, if someone who isn't tech savvy is taking over my phone, I'm putting it to a stock (rooted obviously) rom. Remove any stock apps that aren't necessary and go with it. It's going to be the most stable and trustworthy. Even the best ROMs like CM and such have the occasional hiccup that could render the device useless in the hands of someone without the know how to get it going again.

So I just switched back to Android after a two iPhone lie and affair that I am ashamed of. The DNA is my fourth Android phone and third HTC phone. I gotta say, it's good to be back!
My previous HTC phones (HTC Hero and EVO 4G) were both rooted and I even had to do a manual root on the Hero. I am experinced with rooting and the benefits/risks that cone with it. I am happy with my DNA and even though it is a year old, it still seems like an amazing phone spec wise. I just updated to 4.2.2 and Sense 5 and I must say I am happy with it. I want to root though to get rid of the bloatware and to overclock the CPU to test the PSP Emulator. My question is, can I root with the new update and turn s-off? It's been a while since I've been to the forums and it can be overwhelming getting back into things. Where is a good place to start? What is the most popular ROM?

I think the rumrunner s-off method in original development works with the latest OTA. As far as ROMs go, that's your opinion. The two most popular would probably by Viper for sense and Carbon for AOSP. There are so many to pick from it's impossible to choose one that's the best. I'm personally running OmniROM, based on Android 4.4, and I'm loving it.

I'm not very familiar with the new S-off method, but the older one I used (moonshine) would root, s-off, and unlock the bootloader. I assume that rumrunner is similar.

Really right now all I want is a root for the current OTA just to get rid of the crap (an AMEX App Verizon? Really), so I'll look into the method you mentioned. Would you have the link to that thread? Also, love the Avatar!

It's been a while since I've been to the forums and it can be overwhelming getting back into things. Where is a good place to start? What is the most popular ROM?

the psp emulator will run just fine via no overclock i can say that with a smile
Rumrunner works great. I ended up RUU'ing back to the original stock image and taking the 6 or so OTA's to get the 4.2.2 update so I knew everything was clean and stock. RumRunner took about 10 minutes to complete but I had no issues. Installed TWRP and flashed the latest SuperSU right after that (for some reason I couldn't fit it on my device) and I was good to go.
As for ROMS, NOS M7 (Sense 5) was my daily driver for months, but unfortunately the dev is no longer working on it. It had it's bugs which is why I switched to the official Sense 5 update. For now I'm waiting for someone to release an enhanced version of the OTA, or for the Sense 5.5 Kit Kat ROM to be ready (they're close)
I know the there's discussion about this phone being on is last legs, but I'm just joining the party. I finally am getting into a phone with a more modern ROM as i have been stuck in the gingerbread world for the last couple years. Since my phone had only a couple custom roms available and they're all based on gingerbread, this will be a welcome change. Even if i don't root and add a custom rom, it will be worlds Better.
I had to wait until better phones became more affordable since I'm on a prepaid plan (Ting, actually) and have to buy the phone outright without any subsidy from the carrier.
I should get the phone early next week. Any advice on what to do or not to do when i first get it? I'm reading up on the forums about the phone, and it looks like there are a TON of custom ROMs to pick from, if i choose to go that route.

The best advice I could give you is to keep doing what you've been doing, reading. Educate yourself as much as possible. Read the sticky threads in the Q&A section. If you decide to start flashing, learn how to use fastboot and ADB commands as this knowledge will be helpful if you run into problems down the line. Toolkits are simple but they don't provide the knowledge needed to troubleshoot your issues. Always search these forums and Google for any questions you might have first before you post a question. Being that this device has been around for a long time, pretty much any issues you might encounter, have already been addressed here. Congratulations on your new device and I trust you will enjoy it immensely.

Hey, I was in pretty much exactly the same boat as you 2 weeks ago - just joined Ting in fact. I went straight to the official HTC 4.3 upgrade build, unlocked, rooted, and S-OFFed (ask if you don't understand any of that ) and am pretty happy with it actually. Very solid even though they haven't released an OTA. Don't just take my word for it of course, explore all the resources here, find what you like and have fun.

Thank you both for the replies. I understood most of what you said, except the concept of an RUU is new to me, but i gather that it's an update from HTC to a new version of their ROM. And I'm a little fuzzy on what S-OFF vs S-ON means, but I still have more reading to do. Including the stickies on q & a section.
I guess one question i do have for you is about the difference between the "new partition" and "old partition," and what is preferable or what is better about one over the other. And once you have everything set up rooted, etc. you don't have to hook it up to the computer in order to flash new ROMS, right?
I'll probably start out with the official RUU and then maybe try some custom ROMS if any seem worth checking out. Depends on how i like sense. I'm used to pretty much stock Android, so we'll see.

The new partition layout, in my opinion, is much better. It makes better use of the internal storage space. In short, it is how most other devices use it and how it should have been from the start. I almost never connect my phone to a PC any more. I have WiFi so I download ROMs and mods to my phone via the xda app and then install via TWRP.

I would actually advise against jumping directly on the 4.3 boat. Take a few days to experience Sense 4+ before jumping to Sense 5. Granted, Sense 5 is a completely new experience, so learning Sense 4 doesn't help the learning curve too much, but it's something to do.
Try to enjoy every aspect of your phone before jumping on the bandwagon along with everyone else. I always have said in the past that you need to experience different roms (and different Android versions in this case) to truly appreciate and understand what makes one rom better than the other. Read some more about roms & kernels. Try using a custom kernel that was built for Sense 4.
But finally, I absolutely advise you to upgrade to the new format using the 4.3 RUU. The difference is night and day. Many are rocking the stock rom, and the speed knocks the SOCKS off of Sense 4 stock, and even some custom Sense 4 roms! But you wouldn't know that unless you try them out first...just saying.
And one more thing...get S-Off, as everyone has suggested. Otherwise, you might run into a situation where you think that your phone is bricked while trying to flash am AOSP rom. Not a guarantee, but I'm just saying.
Thanks, I just got the phone last night and activated it on Ting today. I have already installed some of my essential apps but will wait until I get root tonight (hopefully) and restore apps from my old phone with titanium.
I will poke around and see what trouble I can get in with 4.1 and 4.2 before making the switch to the newest version.
I seem to be getting 3G data service fine. I don't know if I'm just not in a LTE service area, or if I have to do something special to get it with Ting.
I'll check out several of the ROMs and see what I like. I was pretty limited with my old phone so this could take me a while to familiarize myself with what's available.

Welcome aboard! I'm also on Ting with an EVO 4G LTE running 4.3. I'll check back in case I have anything helpful to add. I'd definitely recommend the newer ROMs with new partition layout - there's more space for apps! With earlier ROMs I kept running into "out of space" messages when updating or installing apps.
I also did S-OFF so the bootloader is unsecured, meaning you can flash anything you want to any part of the phone (in my limited understanding). This way there's always a way out if you get into trouble flashing a ROM.
This phone rocks, and is one of the best out there in my opinion. It's also underrated, so you can pick up a decent one for about $100. I intend to get more than my money's worth out of this one, and use it as long as possible (mostly because I don't have extra money to be buying new devices all the time). My only wish is that the camera had better image quality.

Just a quick question. Do you get LTE data on your phone with Ting? Not that i care that much but i think i should be in service area to get it, but it only shows 3G on the status bar. I usually just use WiFi so it's not that big of a deal. Just wondering.
I was able to successfully root and unlock the boot loader, and install TWRP recovery. Tonight i think I'll try my luck with getting S-OFF.

I do get LTE in my area but in some places I have to do a PRL update first. You might also check Settings, Mobile Data, and make sure network mode is LTE/CDMA.

Cool, thanks. I just did a search on LTE service in my area, and it appears that they are actually in the process of upgrading our towers to LTE, right now, so that's probably why I'm not seeing it much. Hopefully in the next couple months it will become more prevalent. For now, I'm satisfied with 3G since as I said, I mostly use WiFi anyway. And I imagine I'd burn through data more with a faster connection, so it's not a huge deal to me. But thank you for confirming that I at least should be able to access it on Ting, once it's available on my towers.

I certainly do; I was having issues with LTE at first but it turns out it's just a weak signal where I am (Santa Clara/San Jose). Sprint's upgrading here as well. Oh well, I usually leave data off anyway
