[Q] Anyone having camera issues? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 3

So for me, don't get me wrong, during daylight this camera is awesome, but at night time or during some lower light items, this camera doesn't look too hot. For example I went to a theater performance and took some pictures with my Note 3, my date took pictures with her iPhone 5 and her pictures of the stage and actors turned out real well whereas mine with the stock camera app and Camera Zoom FX just looked washed out and not that good. I can't say I had this issue with my S3 either because i was able to take pretty good pictures with that camera. Any ideas on how I can optimize my camera taking skills here? I'm not a noob with the cameras either, it's just frustrating being hit or miss on pictures you know? Help would be greatly appreciated!

I find that the stock camera app leaves a bit to be desired. Especially for low light , action, or macro shots. There are some very nice paid cameras like camera fv-5. I actually also like ucam for a free camera.
From my Note 3 using Tapatalk

Low light situations and no OIS requires a very steady hand..Not much else you can do man it kinda is what it is.

Photon Camera Issue - Indoors

So I am loving my photon. Have had it since launch day, and the one thing I am less than happy with is the camera performance indoors. Both my epic and evo shift 4g took good pictures indoors, but it seems pretty hit and miss with me and the photon. I cant decide if I should return it and wait for the Galaxy S2 or if maybe they will improve the camera software in an update.
Example as to what I mean with the pictures.
I took a picture, with flash on and settings in auto on my friends atrix, and side by side with my photon. The picture looked more natural on his screen, but on mine, the colors were weird and it wasn't focused very well.
Thoughts?
Only giving my opinion because no one has answered this yet.
I have noticed that the camera is not great indoors. However, one must remember that indoor shots are difficult even with good cameras because of the low light.
But since you are comparing your shots to another phone, all I can say is that hardware is different. Hard to say what is causing it and whether or not the camera on the Atrix is really better.
What I would do if it was me as a first step is to call Motorola and ask them why the camera sucks compared to the Atrix and see what they say. Maybe someone can shed some light on things.
If not, might just have to bite the bullet and buy an app such as Vignette from the Market if you can't get the satisfactory settings on the stock camera app. It might have some set profiles you can use that would make the pictures come out much better. I did see that someone posted taking pictures on the Photon with Vignette produced really good pics but don't know where the shots were taken.
Again, I'm not that knowledgeable on this so these are just suggestions.
I think it's because the flash is less than white. I think it actually gives a more natural picture and looks less like a flash was used. You can edit the photo after you have taken it on the phone. Moto built in some decent editing software in the gallery view.

The Photon actually takes the photo before it finishes focusing causing pics to look really bad. Having played with several Photons, I decided to just use Vignette (from the market) instead. Pics now look outstanding.
My comparisons were done between EVO 4G & MoPho. Hope that helps.
I would say that my HTC Heroc's camera is better then the MoPho which is a big disappointment. It's also worse the the Evo 3D's which I played with for a month. The crappy pictures aren't just indoor, they also aren't very good on clouldy days. Is there a better camera app out there that can take nicer pictures or any roms that have camera tweaks?

Try Vignette from the Market.
sorry bro.....photon....ergggg....all moto devices always have the wroste camera on phones soo :S....you have no lucky to that
I just downloaded the free version of vignette and the photos are much worse than the stock camera. I mean real bad. Is the free version not so good?
Photos colors are way off.
vignette free sucks because it only saves effects in .3mp, however the full version can take forever to process the effects. luckily you can just keep taking pictures and it processes in the background. btw vignette is better than stock.

Vignette only helps so far. What we need is an update from Motorola that addresses the camera issues. But Motorola is silent when it comes to the camera...
I have recently been looking at the photos out of the Nokia N8. If only my MoPho could take images like that!

Our photon comes with really great effects too just press menu then edit than advance
Its the screen resolution of the photon that makes it look different take download the pictures to a computer from both phones and sompare them side by side and you will see that the photon takes a way better pictures, the difference is in the screen,

The problem I have with the default camera app is that on anything but the brightest of sunny days everything looks blurry. Vignette seems to be much better in that regard. At least inside pictures are fairly sharp.
I'm really feeling Camera ZOOM FX right now, pictures are really nice and sharp indoors. The steady shot give you a readout of the accelerometer and wont take the picture unless you've been stead for 0.5 , 1 or 2 seconds. It's $0.10 on the market today and I would strongly recommend it. The only problem is you don't seem to be able to change picture quality settings.
Camera ZOOM FX
+1 just got camera zoom..lovin it.

I use camera zoom since i got my photon the default camera app is really ****ty i guess that the difference should be the way the picture is procesed

I find the Photon camera pretty decent, actually is the best camera I ever had on a phone. For the low light issue thing I would just like to say that it does not take the greatest pic on low light conditions but what actually makes it worse is the Pentile display (and I'm not saying is not a good display like most people), because if you transfer your pictures to your computer you can actually see that the pictures aren't as bad as they seems when you view them in your Photon.
As for camera apps I use Camera360 Ultimate and HDR Camera+
I really don't like camera zoom because you can't save pictures in actual resolutions. (at least when I used I couldn't get them) Maybe they fixed that now.?

crazy shutter lag

I have seen a few threads on this, but it seems like no one has any answers, or i guess it doesn't bother them... Anyway the camera app is horrible at taking shots of anything that can move. I have tried camera fx as well and it's no better.
My captivate camera app was better, and my wifes old iphone will smoke this camera in regards of shutter speed.
It seems impossible to get any non blurry pics of my kids even just sitting there (as we all know kids don't sit perfectly still)
Long story short, is there anyway to get a quicker shutter speed? I have tried all the different ISO settings, and my anti shake is off and a bunch of other things and i still can't get this thing to take decent pictures. If you are using it on things that don't move its great! other than that, it's pretty frustrating. :/
ANY help would be greatly appreciated!!

Taking pics with lots of light helps tremendously. If you're going to take low light pics it certainly will induce a lot of shutter lag. Its a good camera for sure but its not a professional slr.

Not according to reviews and tests.
4s can't change any settings - everything is auto. Sgs2 has nearly full control or auto. This device was also released 8mo ago... so if you give it that, its understandable why the 4s might have a slight edge.

Well I'm not going by reviews, just personal experience. my wife has the 4S and that camera is freaking fast when compared to the SGS2 and the picture quality is better. I hate Apple and their products.. but the true is the true

I would also agree that the Captivate's camera was better, but more for white balance in warmer light.
As for your issue, i'm a bit confused. Is your problem shutter lag (the time between when you press the shutter and when the exposure starts) or that the shutter speed seems really slow?
If it's the later, could you post a sample photo along with the EXIF info? Also try at different amounts of light.

Camera App for Text

Ok, So the stock camera app isn't that great. Can anyone recommend a good camera app specifically for capturing text(or maybe settings)? not worried about OCR, just want the text to come out clear.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
I love the stock app but it's not for everyone. Best app in the market is Camera Zoom fx. Used it on my Captivate after going to CyanogenMod as the vanilla android camera sucks imo. It is a paid app and I'm not sure how much it costs as I got mine from the 10 cent sale in December

it works great on the flyer too. Used it on Gumbys desensified rom too as I didn't care for the aosp camera. One thing though if you want wide screen with zoom fx, 3.2mp is as high as you can go, where the htc app will go all the way to 5

I think the HTC camera app is quite good , but it depends on exactly what you are trying to do, which is not really clear. The HTC apps gives you control of all the settings which you may lose on some apps. Can you describe what the problem is exactly. There are some specialty apps for documents that has post processing that might help
The stock camera is better than alot of camera apps, however when i take a picture of text, some area's tend to be blurry and zooming in makes them worse. The depth of field is bad, but i assume that is mainly a hardware thing? Camera Zoom FX works slightly better, text is more readable and you can zoom in a little without blurring it.

Depth of filed is related to the lens and aperture and has nothing to do with software other than you can adjust some parameters to make it more or less.
Zoom will always make resolution worse because there is no optical zoom and when you"zoom" you are doing it digitally and getting less resolution. 3.2mp can never be as good as 5mp so I assume you are simply holding the camera more steady and the app has little to do with it.
Try this. on the stock app, change the effect to depth of field, set the ISO to 100 if you have enough light or 200 if you need more brightness. Do not zoom.
You will have to hold very steady and straight. Watch the focus, it won't focus is you are too close to the subject.

Ok, that settings do work slightly better, still not the greatest, im just going to write this off to the hardware component.
A few years ago my friend had this phone http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_ericsson_j105_naite-2818.php
The camera was amazing, only 2MP but took really good pics.
Well I"m still not sure what you are trying to do, but I get consistently fine results with the flyer using the app Scan2PDF for documents. The Flyer does not have a flash, so you have to make sure you have good light without shadows. Otherwise the camera in the flyer is as good or better than most tablets and phones. Like any camera , even $3000 DSLRS, when you do closeups, the depth of field is very short.
Ok, say for instance when im studying, my textbooks are like 1k pages and it takes up space when its open and its an effort to navigate; i take a pic of a page or 2 and it makes it easier to work with. Thing is, it doesn't come out very great. If i take a pic of the whole page, some parts are less readable, almost like it doesn't focus the whole thing. If i take a pic of a paragraph, then it comes out fine. It doesn't seems as clear as it should be for a 5MP camera. Again, i think its just the hardware.
Yeah most of the reviews of the flyer were great but it got knocked on the camera.

I think that CamScanner is one of the best apps for your purpose. It's free, and it automatically does a lot of image post processing to give you the clear text you are looking for, alongside cropping out the background, etc.
Sent from my HTC Flyer P510e using XDA Premium HD app
the more light you provide the greater the depth of field will be, but you still need to have the subject flat and evenly lighted. Same for any camera, if you cant provide a reasonable subject, the camera cannot defy the laws of physics.

Front facing camera quality?

Hey.. I've looked so hopefully its cool that I post about the Tmobile galaxy s 3 front facing camera quality issue... when I aim the cam at myself, the quality looks great until I take the actual picture and then its kinda washed out and looks like its been edited with the smooth option.
Anyone aware of this or find it annoying? I wonder why it reverts to a horrible quality after you snap the pic.
Unedited pic just now

Try taking pictures in well lit room or outdoor sunny pics come out crisp the sensor on the camera dosn't do to well in low light you can try to turn up the iso on in settings but it over saturates the pic in my option . Btw Hyper X has a nice mod that dose improve overall image quality and Video quality on the S3 however i have had very little success trying to get it to work on the US variant past 720p mode in video mode i swapped my phone for I9300 and the mod works perfect. check it out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1691145 hope this helps .
try not expect too much from a 1.9 mp camera sensor
This is not only with the front facing cam, but also with the one on the back.
When I take the picture, it looks great, but when I view it... it's washed out and looks more ugly.
Looking for a fix for this.
YZ.
I think I found it out.
When you enter the camera app, you phone sets the brightness level to 100 %, but when you view it, if your brightness is lower than 100 %, the picture looks washed out.
Try setting the brightness to 100 %.
YZ.
I will recommend use to use Camera360 instead of stock camera app. It has significant improvemance. I have tested many and Camera360 DOES make difference!
Nope.. its the camera.. again, when aiming at myself (front facing) the quality looks great on the screen but when its taken, the quality looks less than vga quality... why does that happen?? I may return the phone

Z2 Camera ability to capture fast moving objects

As the title indicates I am interested to see what people who own the Z2 feel about shutter speed in auto 8mp wide mode and also the cameras ability to Freeze motion both indoor and outdoor shots.
I would be very interested to hear from anyone who has a G3 as I have one on pre-order and also how the camera speed compares to the M8 super speedy camera.
I have watched loads of reviews and the time it takes from pressing shutter to the camera animation / taking seems a little slow but not many reviews talk about this subject.
The reason I ask is I have fast moving kids
Thanks in advance.
Sent from my HTC One X+ using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Ive found that superiour auto doesnt always work but when it does the snapspeed is very rapid with minimal bluring
Z2 can record at 120fps maximum so there is video recording (slow motion edits are fun to play with)
3200 max iso (higher =faster snap)
Z2 does get a little warm when using the camera
I dont own the other two devices so my reivews/info is from 20 mins of experiance
The M8 has a alittle better due to the dedicated HW however pictured dont look as sharp and vibrant
The G3 i havnt seen much of aside hearing that focusing hardly ever fails and the sharpness of the camera is perfect
Id say look for camera shootouts

I find that camera shootouts are hopeless for reflecting real world use (if I see another macro shot of a pink flower i'm gonna explode!).
I bought the G2 a few months ago based on the positive reviews of the camera (all landscapes and flowers of course) and boy did I end up regretting that! G2 shutter speed was woeful - it was impossible to take a good picture of my kids when the lighting was anything less than absolutely perfect. Also, the G2's noise reduction algorithm meant that even if your kids do stay still for a second, they'll end up looking like an oil painting (in less than good light).
Also the video on the G2 was shocking too - really contrasty in good light and very bad in low light - audio wasn't good either
I ended up selling the G2 and going for a Z2, and I have to say I'm very happy indeed - camera is much better than the G2 - shutter speed for capturing kids is about as good as you'll get on a phone. Video is brilliant too (its digital stabilisation is the best I've seen). In low light, the Z2 does very well indeed. There's a bit of noise, but I'd much prefer that to my kids looking like they have plastic faces!
Anyway, the G3 camera *looks* better than the G2 , but I was so disappointed by the G2 that I don't know if i can even trust the reviews as they aren't really focussed on my (and your) typical use-cases.
Anyway, that's my tuppence. I know how important it is to capture memories of the kids and I have to say the Z2 hasn't let me down.

Wow. That's pretty good to hear. Could anyone please post samples of fast moving stuff. Would love to see a dog running being frozen or if someone could bounce a tennis ball and try to capture it whilst it's in fast motion ...not at the top of the bounce where it stops in mid air. The delay is probably because it re-focuses before it takes the picture. Fortunately the dedicated camera button comes in handy here because you have the ability to half-press the shutter button which will focus and lock the focus until you do a full-press. Means that you can be much more certain that what you see when you press is what you get when the photo is processed.
You can actually acheive the same result with the on-screen buttonby first pressing it (which locks focus) and then unpressing it, which will fire the shutter.

Thanks. I went and had a good test of the camera in 3 UK today. I found that half holding the hardware shutter key then fully pressing it was effective. I tested it instore but found that when I waved my hand back and forward and tried to capture it in a still image of struggled a little. If I didn't half hold the shutter to lock focus I found auto focus was not that quick compared to m8 and s5. Not bad but not as quick. Timeshift is excellent and overall I think camera was quite good. I always buy phones SIM free but I would only pay 450 for one. It's currently £550 which is steep when the other handsets are around 400 now. Waiting for a good deal.

For me the focus speed is much, much less important than the shutter speed. It could take a second to focus (it doesn't, obviously) and I still wouldn't care that much as long as it was able to freeze the action.
I bought mine about a month ago in store from 3 UK for £459. Price must have gone up since then. £550 is definitely quite steep.

Came from a G2. Really liked it but i just couldn't live with the camera. Such a disappointment. Before that I had a Note 2, which was very good. Excellent camera. I find the pictures with the samsungs are a bit sharper which I have to admit I preferred. Z2 pics have a bit less sharpness to them. I'd take the Z2 camera all day long though as it's better in low light than the note 2.

G2 camera was pretty bad. Sammy has poor low light shots. Good to hear z2 is better.

If anyone can post more samples that would be great. Thanks.

This is exactly my case. Have a g2 to and can't capture nothing moving. Is a bit better after a few camera mods but is not ideal. I will buy z2, was a bit worried about camera overheat but I think I will try it anyway.
