You need a display that has enough pixels to take advantage of 4k. Otherwise it's just HD when you play it back. My 2560x1440 HP comes close, but almost no one has a 4k display yet.
I tried filming a marching band half time show in 4k and it stopped at 5 minutes with a warning that file size was exceeded. So they couldn't figure out how to roll over to a new file after hitting the 4GB FAT limit? It sucks because the phone took 3 minutes to close the file before I could hit record again. Just keep that in mind if you're recording something important.

I did that and its still stops at 1.68GB with Maximum File Size Exceeded error message. Definitely formatted exFAT.

LOL Man, if I lived next to Disney, I'd feel the exact same way.
As far as 4K recording, there is a HUGE advantage outside of viewing it in true 4K. I use 4K footage from RED cameras all the time in video production, and the biggest advantage of that resolution is the ability to zoom within an editor without pixelation issues. I drop 4K footage onto an editor's timeline and can zoom and pan within the frame without loosing resolution when rendering to 1080p. There is a limit, but you can get pretty tight without dropping below your export res. It also helps during production as the camera operator only needs to be concerned about keeping the action within the frame without worrying about zooming in and out, leaving that up to the editor during post-production.
This is the basis of how the Lumina with its 40 million pixels is able to "smart zoom" without losing quality. Its easy to grab a small portion of those pixels (2 million for 1080p), effectively "digital zooming" with no loss in quality. Post-production image stabilization works amazingly well too - someone with a seizure disorder could cut a perfectly stable shot since there is so much "edge" to work with.
Now if I could only record more than 5 minutes of it on the N3!!!

Is it me or does our camcorder suck?? I recorded my dog in the house blinds were open and everything so I can have light in the house but my video still came out dark which is crazy really starting to think our camera is wack I love the phone don't get me wrong but I'm considering trading it in I mean its like I have to be outside to get decent quality....in the daytime anyway

I'm a professional video producer and hobby photographer. I haven't tested the Evo 3D's camera for video yet, but the problem you described is common in all auto cameras.
When a camera is automatically adjusting exposure, shutter, iso, etc. it adjusts for the brightest dominant subject in frame. The camera thinks you want everything perfectly exposed and is programmed not to blow out the highlights. So, what happens is it sees the bright window and thinks "ok, lets expose to that so it isn't a white blob." If you want to avoid this type of thing, lighting has to be as even as possible to the windows (which is almost always impossible) or you frame your subject without the window in the background. You also avoid this by using manual exposure settings, but I'm not sure how much control you'll have on the E3D.
What I would be weary of is the bitrate the E3D records video at. HD is only a resolution, but if it's a crappy bitrate, the video will look like crap. If you're not familiar with that, search youtube for some sample clips of videos in different bitrates. This probably can't be adjusted in the settings, but might be adjusted with some development if this is lacking. I remember when I was on my Samsung Moment which was android 2.1, that was adjusted in the build.prop but I don't know if that's the same here.

Some background to the above clip, this is testing the Q scale of a hacked firmware for a DSLR. The Q scale is just the piece of the firmware that controls the video compression/bitrate. The lower it is set, the higher the bitrate it uses. He starts at about a 44Mbps bitrate in the above video and moves down to about 10Mbps or lower. I'd be surprised if the E3D records even 2 or 3 Mbps. But if you jump from the beginning to about 1 min 30 sec. you can see the difference more. Watching it through, the changes are so subtle you might not notice much.

No problem. There's a lot to factor into better low-light picture. The tiny lens on mobile phones doesn't help. The new Mytouch HTC just released this summer has a back-lit sensor which lets more light hit the sensor, for example (the sensor is built backwards so the wiring is behind it - in a nut-shell). It's like a "duh" technology but JUST emerged recently. A lot of cameras compensate by adjusting the ISO (digital equivalent to film speed or sensitivity to light) but that causes more noise/fuzz to appear. You may want to try that though if you can for video, I know you can on photos. But feel free to ask me anything about video or photography and I'll do my best to respond. I don't sign in to XDA often, but I'd be glad to exchange emails or something.

I did I mess with all the settings .....stop not satisfied lol .....just think HTC could if done better I know back in the day BAKED SNACK would tweak the camera and camcorder to make it better....just hope eventually the devs will do the same

Best Buy is selling a 720P Dynex TV for 249.99. I have had my fair share of HD TVs and I must say anything over 32'', 1080P is preferred. 32'' and below, you won't notice the difference between 720P and 1080P. Again, my own opinion.

it depends on a few variables. How far away will you be sitting? How big is the screen?
I have a 62" 1080p in my bedroom. It is a large bedroom and my bed is about 14 foot from the screen. I like the extra resolution at that distance.
I have a 50" 720p in my living room. my couch is only 10 foot from the screen. It is fine at that distance. If I push my Couch back to where it would be closer 12 foot away though, not as good.
I say a 720 is fine on 50 our less as long as you aren't sitting too far away.
But it also depends on how much difference in cost you are talking. A few years ago there was several hundred difference between the two. Now I think the gap has closed.
I would opt for the 1080, but the 720 wouldn't be out of the question.

I was going to say that most only see true 1080p from blu - ray. But want to add that netflix only streams 720p.

Just as everyone has said, it really depends on what you are connecting to it. I know what you are talking about, and right now, you can get a steal of a deal for a 50" plasma 720p for like 6ooish. Who is your cable provider? Do you have HD setup? Do you have a blu-ray player? Are you connecting a ps3/xbox to it? Personally, I would rather have 1080. It's not that much more price wise. You can get a 51" samsung 1080p for 899.

Unless you are using a CRT 1080i is not as sharpas 720p FYi. 1080i is interpolated from 2 560p images. CRTs are designed for interpolation and LCD's/Plasmas are designed for progressive "i" vs "p". So on an LCD/Plasma you are going to lose quality. So in the case of HD screens bigger #'s don't always mean better. Also refresh rates and contrast ratio are other factors you need to look into. The bigger the Hz the better, the smaller the Ms the better and the bigger the contrast ratio the better.
If you never saw a movie 1080p and ony ever saw moveis in 720p you wouldn't know you were missing anything. If you aren't bothered by the fact that you will know there is better out there and the movie you are watching can look better, then 720p will be the better choice. If that will eat away at you whenever you watch a movie then get a 1080p because you will end up with one anyway.

Hey guys I was testing our 1080 p and noticed that our camera was horrible when looking at things with lights like a TV screen or something you really couldn't see anything on there it just looked very bright. It happens when your filming people and there's a light in the background also it just shows up as a huge glare and its horrible. It's on all roms and I think its just the camera in general. My friend also has this phone and I tested it and it resulted in the same thing. Light sources are being shown to much I guess and trust me it's horrible to try and show off your phone and claiming to have one of the best phones in the world and your camera 1080p is filming horribly. It's retarded as hell and up until this discovery I've had no complaints about this phone. So my question is what can we do to fix this. I've tried lowering the EV Control to negative 2 and it still gave the glare. Do we have to wait for an update to fix this problem or what.

This problem can not be fixed.
The detector has a limited dynamic range- smaller pixels have lower dynamic range. The lens needs to be small, otherwise the device isn't pocket friendly. Lens size must be matched to pixel size, so even if a manufacturer wanted to include a high dynamic range imager in a cellphone, size-constraints make it unlikely.
It isn't realistic to expect a phone camera to compare in quality to a dedicated (and larger device) camera.

That's not relevant at all. There are multiple phones that have great cameras such as the Xperia arc. And I expect a device that outperforms others. That's why I bought this phone. And even my old Xperia x10 camera was able to cover white balance a lot better in certain areas. Our camera should be better. It takes great still shots but horrible video in lighted areas I guess. It doesn't make sense.

If someone could modify the Camera to accept tap to focus and exposure in video mode it would be perfect. That's what the issue is. However, I notice that during recording it is a LOT better than what it is when you just set video mode and look at it.

Optical Stabilization has nothing to do with that. It has to do with "shake" caused by handholding the camera. OIS has nothing to do with moving objects. That's shutter speed.

I would say the slowness of the camera is my biggest/only? gripe of the entire phone. This should get fixed soon, but we need to put the word out to them that this is a major concern of its users.

TL;DR: A cellphone camera is a lot less flexible than a dedicated camera. If a scene is extremely well lit (read: direct sunlight), a cameraphone should be able to freeze frame, such as that soccer photo that was posted above, but if it's not well lit and/or the camera is biased towards slow shutter speeds, good luck. Gotta use the right tool for the job, and a cellphone isn't it.
Here comes the long version:
To create a picture, a specific amount of light is needed - too little, and you're underexposed, everything is too dark, too much, everything is over exposed; white. There's two primary factors controlling light taken in: Aperture (amount of light let in) and shutter speed (how much light is collected). Imagine filling a cup: aperture is how much you open the tap, and shutter speed is how long you keep it open. However, there's an additional factor: sensor sensitivity (ISO), which is a multiplication factor, but introduces noise when used. Think of measuring rainfall with a big bucket or a small glass. The glass will give you a ballpark figure, but the bucket will be much more accurate.
However, in all cell phones, the aperture is fixed, leaving only iso and shutter speed to be adjusted, and in most cell phones the max ISO is low due to the abysmal noise performance of these tiny sensors. In the case of the G2, it only has 4 stops of adjustment in ISO, where most compact cameras can manage 6 (iso 100-3200) and DSLRS can manage 8 or more. And, you really don't want to be using the last 2 stops if you can at all help it.
Problem is, the shutter speed can only go so low until hand shake becomes an issue. The whole point of image stabilization is to allow slower shutter speeds than could normally be used, with the ancillary benefit of less shaky video. Slower shutter speeds mean a lower ISO can be used, which results in better image quality. IS is one of the big selling points of this phone, so it's not a surprise they've decided to make it heavily favor its usage to increase image quality.
But, for moving stuff, you want fast shutter speeds.... with a bias towards slow shutter speeds, well, there's your problem. Sometimes there is a sports mode which will change the bias towards faster shutter speeds, but the G2's doesn't seem to do that (or it doesn't help much). I'd say, set ISO to max (800) and pray.
Or, if you are talking about focusing on a moving subject, either tap on something on the right plane as the moving subject, and take the picture when the subject is in the right spot. In the case of the G2, you have another option, which is to use manual focus. Either works.
Wow, the entire time I thought my camera was defective. The commercial makes a point of shooting pictures while the subject is moving and getting a still shot. In real life with this phone it's pretty impossible.
For most part the G2's camera has been fine for me but I usually don't take moving pictures with my cell phone camera.
It's true. I hope LG addresses this issue so long as it is a software defect. I'm concerned that it could be a hardware limitation though. capturing moving subjects is near impossible even in good lighting. However, the camera app opens fast enough, faster than SOME other devices. The shutter speed also gives the impression that it is faster than the nexus or moto camera. Galaxy devices are faster and then iOS has fastest shutter speed.
As for still subjects or scenes, this phone has arguably the best camera on any android device. In some instances, it is better than the iphone 5s, in others it is not. Low light shots are heavily softened yet the shot is brighter than any other camera I've seen. The smartphone camera that beats all of them is of course the lumia 1020, which many HAVE also complained to be slow.
Well I have a 9 month old and this thing doesn't miss a beat. I do however have that auto intelligence on and that snap is instant.

Zigzag is point on. This is cell phone camera. I find it to be one of the best overall in that area. Every cell phone I have owned has had one weakness or the other. If you need quality pictures of moving objects then you need dslr. Or, snap a bunch and take the best one.

The camera drives me nuts as well. Every time I read about it someone chimes in saying "well its a cellphone camera" but I have had more cellphones than most people and never had such trouble taking pictures of my son/nephew/nice, etc. To get a child to stand still for a picture is tough and sometimes it takes up to 7 seconds (I've counted) to take the picture. That's an eternity as a parent. I love everything about this phone except that aspect of the camera and the fact that Verizon doesn't offer it in white, which I'm hoping is fixed tomorrow. From there I just have to hope LG has an update for this. I don't care about the science of taking pictures, how it let's in light, I don't care if they have little Indonesian kids working in a little micro-sweat shop drawing pictures. It takes way too long to take a picture in anything but perfect sunny daylight, and thats not because it's a cellphone camera, that's comparing it to many other cellphone cameras.

I wasn't saying it drives me nuts... I was saying I don't have an issue with the camera... my son is crawling now and becoming more playful everyday. I don't have any issue with the camera. It does a great capturing him moving around. Not sure what some of you guys are going through because what I use it for it does an awesome job......

I meant to quote the person on top of your post, not your post. The strangest part is that I had the phone for about a week and didn't notice any problem with the camera. I rooted it and still didn't even notice any issue. I uprooted back to stock so I could hopefully return it for a white one If it comes out in the next couple of days and it wasn't until that point I noticed it. I took many pictures the following days as I ended up in Great Wolf Lodge and took many unsuccessful pictures of the kids, but I wonder if it was working OK and then gave me a hard time after either rooting or unrooting or if it just took me a few days to get out of the honeymoon stage to realize it. I'm curious to see what happens if I do get the option to switch my phone in the coming days, if it'll still be a problem or not.
Didn't mean for such a long post, sorry. Just following the lead of the thread, "Blowing Off Steam."

I read somewhere (most likely on here) that the Optimus PRO had the same issue for a while with the slow shutter and was eventually fixed with a software upgrade. I never had LG before (mainly because it isn't a heavily supported brand, which is frustrating with this one as well) so I don't know how they've been in the past.

As the title indicates I am interested to see what people who own the Z2 feel about shutter speed in auto 8mp wide mode and also the cameras ability to Freeze motion both indoor and outdoor shots.
I would be very interested to hear from anyone who has a G3 as I have one on pre-order and also how the camera speed compares to the M8 super speedy camera.
I have watched loads of reviews and the time it takes from pressing shutter to the camera animation / taking seems a little slow but not many reviews talk about this subject.
The reason I ask is I have fast moving kids

Ive found that superiour auto doesnt always work but when it does the snapspeed is very rapid with minimal bluring
Z2 can record at 120fps maximum so there is video recording (slow motion edits are fun to play with)
3200 max iso (higher =faster snap)
Z2 does get a little warm when using the camera
I dont own the other two devices so my reivews/info is from 20 mins of experiance
The M8 has a alittle better due to the dedicated HW however pictured dont look as sharp and vibrant
The G3 i havnt seen much of aside hearing that focusing hardly ever fails and the sharpness of the camera is perfect
Id say look for camera shootouts

Thanks for reply. I like camera shootouts but they never focus (lol) on the fast moving subjects and concentrate on low light and daylight shots.

I find that camera shootouts are hopeless for reflecting real world use (if I see another macro shot of a pink flower i'm gonna explode!).
I bought the G2 a few months ago based on the positive reviews of the camera (all landscapes and flowers of course) and boy did I end up regretting that! G2 shutter speed was woeful - it was impossible to take a good picture of my kids when the lighting was anything less than absolutely perfect. Also, the G2's noise reduction algorithm meant that even if your kids do stay still for a second, they'll end up looking like an oil painting (in less than good light).
Also the video on the G2 was shocking too - really contrasty in good light and very bad in low light - audio wasn't good either
I ended up selling the G2 and going for a Z2, and I have to say I'm very happy indeed - camera is much better than the G2 - shutter speed for capturing kids is about as good as you'll get on a phone. Video is brilliant too (its digital stabilisation is the best I've seen). In low light, the Z2 does very well indeed. There's a bit of noise, but I'd much prefer that to my kids looking like they have plastic faces!
Anyway, the G3 camera *looks* better than the G2 , but I was so disappointed by the G2 that I don't know if i can even trust the reviews as they aren't really focussed on my (and your) typical use-cases.
Anyway, that's my tuppence. I know how important it is to capture memories of the kids and I have to say the Z2 hasn't let me down.

Really helpful. Thanks very much. What is the time from when you press the shutter from it actually taking a pic. HTC and g3 are super fast but z2 appears to have a small delay ?

Wow. That's pretty good to hear. Could anyone please post samples of fast moving stuff. Would love to see a dog running being frozen or if someone could bounce a tennis ball and try to capture it whilst it's in fast motion ...not at the top of the bounce where it stops in mid air. Still trying to make a decision between this phone and g3 which I preordered. Not very confident that the g3 camera is going to be better than the Z2 ... Still deciding. Thanks for all the help.

The delay is probably because it re-focuses before it takes the picture. Fortunately the dedicated camera button comes in handy here because you have the ability to half-press the shutter button which will focus and lock the focus until you do a full-press. Means that you can be much more certain that what you see when you press is what you get when the photo is processed.
You can actually acheive the same result with the on-screen buttonby first pressing it (which locks focus) and then unpressing it, which will fire the shutter.

Thanks. I went and had a good test of the camera in 3 UK today. I found that half holding the hardware shutter key then fully pressing it was effective. I tested it instore but found that when I waved my hand back and forward and tried to capture it in a still image of struggled a little. If I didn't half hold the shutter to lock focus I found auto focus was not that quick compared to m8 and s5. Not bad but not as quick. Timeshift is excellent and overall I think camera was quite good. I always buy phones SIM free but I would only pay 450 for one. It's currently £550 which is steep when the other handsets are around 400 now. Waiting for a good deal.

For me the focus speed is much, much less important than the shutter speed. It could take a second to focus (it doesn't, obviously) and I still wouldn't care that much as long as it was able to freeze the action.
I bought mine about a month ago in store from 3 UK for £459. Price must have gone up since then. £550 is definitely quite steep.

I hear what your saying. What phone did you come from. Yes the price has shot up. 549 is a joke. Apparently ee were selling then at 429 but missed it .... Booooo.

Came from a G2. Really liked it but i just couldn't live with the camera. Such a disappointment. Before that I had a Note 2, which was very good. Excellent camera. I find the pictures with the samsungs are a bit sharper which I have to admit I preferred. Z2 pics have a bit less sharpness to them. I'd take the Z2 camera all day long though as it's better in low light than the note 2.

G2 camera was pretty bad. Sammy has poor low light shots. Good to hear z2 is better.

This is exactly my case. Have a g2 to and can't capture nothing moving. Is a bit better after a few camera mods but is not ideal. I will buy z2, was a bit worried about camera overheat but I think I will try it anyway.
