Time to upgrade 920 to 1520? - Nokia Lumia 920

Is this the logical upgrade that it looks?

Not for 750-800 Euro`s retail :silly:

Well the 920 was rather steeply priced when it first appeared.

well, its a different class pretty much.
its better equipped and such (unless you're looking at AT&T, the US carrier carrying the 1520) but then again its larger, which could be either a plus or minus.
Personally, I'd prefer the 920, but if you value big screens, the 1520 could be the way to go. I personally don't expect to see a complete 92x series successor until a significant WP upgrade drops, like 8.1 perhaps.

1520 ticks all the boxes pretty much for me and definetly an upgrade however if it's priced anything over £520 it's not worth it. £500 is fine I would choose this over Note 3, which incidently I also owned.
Love the design build quality camera size...only downside is ofcourse lack of good apps.
If it's too pricey will probably wait for price to fall as I did with nokia lumia 920 which I bought for £165.00.

I wanted the 1020 but wasn't happy as it was just the same body and battery as the lumia 920 so was extremely happy when they announced the lumia 1520
Few reasons why I need it
1) Its got the new Faster Processor and more ram ( future proof)
2) Support for RAW files ( I buy my phones based on their cameras and so this is BIG for me)
Sure the lumia 1020 will support raw as well but those 41mp are just overkill while the 1520's 20mp is more manageble
3) Bigger Battery and Bigger screen so editing etc will be more fun.
I just hope Nokia comes with a built in Raw editor in the future and proper HDR in camera ( I know it dos bracketing shots) but hdr in camera would be benefit or a software to deal with it

dont forget about being able to add 64gb micro sd

if i were you i would wait for WP 8.1 to appear.. well see, there will be some new devices then - and probably the devices will do a "jump" like we expect WP 8.1 to bring... also i never buy the first device of a new "family" just for the case that there was a problem with the new design...
that saved me back in the days when they changed the iPhone 4 design and had issues, with the antenna

Nope
Not for me. Im buing new Lumia 920 next month.

i usin L920 almost 8 month and for now dont see reason to spend lot money for new models... 920 work great

I like big phone and want one

Still very happy with my 920, everything runs as it should and battery life is good. This is the first phone I had for this long, usualy I changed phone every 2-3 months on android.

I loved my 920 and was very happy with it, Now have a 1520 and it is so much of an upgrade, The screen is a beauty and I actually like the new tile layout, The camera is great compared to the 920s of which I wasn't overly impressed,
Performance wise it is flawless whatever I ask of it, Not that windows phone has ever been slow or laggy but this really is so fluid,
Lumia Black is preinstalled and I had the update through the other day via preview for devs to 10521, Little touches like the coloured glance screen clock are very nice amongst everything that comes with GDR3.
It is a very big phone though so will not be to everyone's taste, If you have large hands and pockets then go for it :fingers-crossed:

I wonder if the 1520 will get the WP9 update from MS

possibly not... it's early to discuss about this... ask question when Microsoft release official hardware compatibility list for WP9... also rumors says WP9 will not be compatible with WP8 because MS start build WP9 from scratch

Just bought one brand new for $400.00 and why don't we have forum for the 1520?

It is too big...
Maybe if rumored Lumia 929 becomes real. :]

Well Lumia 1520 screen is too big. I know it is phablet. But not handy if you want use as phone. I upgraded my Lumia 928 to Lumia Icon and 5" screen for one hand is big. But I'm happy with it. But most of things what I like Verizon Lumia models - design.

I myself have decided to join the Windows phone gang recently. I find 1520 way too big to operate, so I got a 920 instead. Some of my fav wallpapers are not Full HD so I dont have to worry about the pics get stretched.

Hello my fellow nerds.
I'm sure a fair few of you also had/have this dilemma. Should i buy the Nokia Lumia 800 or the HTC Titan? I'll go through some spec comparisons and then my pro's and cons, then i'll ask you guys for you're opinions. Right.

IMHO, i think the Lumia 800 is a great phone, but overall the Titan beats it. But i still find myself wanting the Lumia. I don't know if it's the looks, the display, or just the ability to own something crafted so beautifully, but i just want it. They are both truly great phones and both really push the OS forwards and into the limelight, so to speak.
What does everyone think? I'll post this on both the Lumia 800 and HTC Titan boards, so more people see it.
Thanks for having a little read. Let me know your opinions below please. Thankyou geek community.
I looked at both as well, though I was always biased toward the Lumia. It was, after all, the only thing I really wanted, since I'm a big Nokia fan. I just wanted to make sure I was making the right decision.
Yes, the Titan has a larger display. The Lumia, hands down, has a much more beautiful display, IMO.
After playing w/ 4.7", 4.3" (HTC HD2), and 3.7", I do prefer the smaller form factor. It feels easier to do things with one hand.
Speaking of hands. For me, the Lumia feels amazing. I love that the protective sleeve looks exactly like the phone. And, I prefer my phones to be a bit flashy. I like to own phones that other people generally don't have, or that I'm not likely to bump into. I'm that way about cologne, too. I once had someone recognize a scent I was wearing. Granted, it was a common designer, but I never wore it again. I much prefer "OMG, what are you wearing" and "OMG, what a sexy phone!" HAHAHA
The Lumia has its downsides. Music playback quality is sub-par, even through ear phones. The lows are missing. Internet Sharing has yet to be enabled, and lack of notification light is something I notice.
Having said that, I'm very happy with my beautiful cyan smartphone.
Well, the Titan has just dropped to £383.99 ($592.07) on Handtec.co.uk. If it was Amazon, clove or expansys i would by now, but I've heard really mixed reviews of Handtec. Some people say its fine, but lots of people say they sent the wrong item or it was damaged or came weeks, sometimes even months late, even after paying for next day delivery. Has anyone here brought their Lumia or any other phone on Handtec.co.uk? Cheers.

I had an awesome experience with Handtec.co.uk
They were the only business to confirm the product code of the Lumia 800 and the correct bands on it. Other sites either did not reply, or quoted Nokia's website. Handtec also processed the order and I received here in Seattle 36hrs after I submitted the order. Another user (halfnelson...) ordered his Lumia from handtec as well. That's how I learned of them. He had a fantastic experience, too.
Are you in the UK?

Good for you! Bet you'll have it real soon.
Ima gonna bet that the Lumia 900 won't officially make it out of the US for quite some time. AT&T loves their exclusivity contracts. If you were to obtain an unlocked AT&T model, odds are likely that they will have forced Nokia to make it tri-band UMTS, just to screw everyone else out of a fully functioning device.

Yeah wouldn't surprise me at all. I hate it when carriers get exclusives. Don't see why Nokia couldn't sell the 800 and/or 900 through their official site sim-free. Oh well, if europe doesn't get the 900 maybe something else will be announced around july/august time in line with Apollo. Maybe even something with a high res screen and 32GB storage. We can only hope i suppose

I worked for AT&T from 2001-2007 and formed my habit there. I got the first color phone from Nokia... the 7210. I then splurged on the 8801, the the 8600 Luna. Then, dropped down to the just-as-flashy-but-less-expensive-and-well-featured 6700 classic (silver). There were other Nokias as well, but not so hot as these ones. Glad to be back in with them again. The titan is nice, but it's missing the sexy factor. Well, unless size matters. Then, it's the clear winner.
After I tried them both out in the store I chose the Lumia 800 (went home and ordered it from Amazon.de for 380 euroes, which was a lot cheaper than the Titan at 490 euroes..).
The Lumia just looks so much better, and feels more comfortable in the hand (also usable with 1 hand.. which was, obviously, more difficult with the titan, then again.. I have medium hands).
The AMOLED display is also far more superb than the SLCD on the Titan (in my opinion). I did not notice much difference on the processor side, but then again, the difference between them are really small.
After the update my phone lasts easily 3 days on battery with quite a lot of usage, which is in my opinion quite good for a smartphone.
Oh, you should have compared the "sound" when talking in it.. it is a phone you know! For me the Lumia wins here tho, since it has a noice canceling function which makes it easier for someone to hear you in the other end when it is filtering away sounds from for example your car or background noise. It also has good sound into your ear.

Thanks for the feedback. I can't put sound as a category, as i haven't had both phones, so i don't know about sound quality. I've only played with them briefly in store. Anyway, Titan is coming tomorrow.
Build quality, sound, support, lumia has many wins you didn't address.

Build quality would be a tie IMO. Lots of people with the lumia and n9 complain of creaking from the chassis, and people with the titan praise it's build, so idk. Sound the Titan is a downright winner. The Lumia 800 has quite frankly pathetic sound quality from what I've heard (albeit only a sample clip) and what people say on this forum. I don't know what you mean by support? Both would be sim free for me so the OS updates would be received at exactly the same time i would of thought.
Replaceable battery as a category
It's a question of taste, I know... The sealed enclosure is a dream for phone designers, and leads to gorgeous phones. However, the ability to swap batteries is a plus for road warriors. A plus for Titan, in my opinion...

[Q] Next Windows Phone ?

My contract renewal due next month and I'm using Nokia Lumia 800, quite happy with it. However, I will wait for next Windows phone to appear in the market. Which of the high end Windows phone worth waiting for in next 3-6 months?
cheers...
Doubt it's worth buying a Windows Phone to replace a Lumia until the Apollo ones come along, and no-one really knows what they'll be.
hmm, but I'm not seeing any leak on any website about next windows phone. my regrets in advance for my ignorance

It is unlikely you'll be able to buy one in the next 3-6 months.
If you must absolutely get a new model, go for the Lumia 900. It has very similarly except for a slightly larger screen and a front facing camera
There was a Pureview Nokia with Windows Phone 8 leaked on WMpoweruser a few weeks ago.
Yeah, but seems like Windows 8 still 6 months away. I will wait let's see. cheers...
The Nokia PureView Leaked was Symbian - not WP.
900 looks like a great phone, but I wouldn't touch it with a 10 ft pole until they issue a fix for the camera - and then it would depend on how the fix is received..
I'm going to chug along with my Lumia 800 for the next year. It's a great phone; the camera is decent most times; spectacular in some cases. And it just works and looks great.
The phone I have set my sights on is the future Nokia PureView WP8. As much as I love the form factor of the Lumia 800, with a PureView camera who cares?
It had to be WP, it had the 3 standard capacitive buttons at the bottom.

900 Owner looking at moving to the 920

I have a Lumia 900. It's a great phone but it is just not feeling the WP8 love.
One of the things that concern me is the larger size. The 900 is already a heavy phone. Another is the reports of camera issues.
The last thing is simply the differences between WP7 & 8, are there enough improvements to justify the swap. I already know that the one app I use most is no longer available on 7 or 8 so I’m wondering what other adjustments are in store.
Anyway, has anyone else made this swap or simply have some constructive input on this phone?
For what it's worth I couldn't get hold of a 920 so got an 820 instead, There are minor improvements over the 900 and although I consider it an upgrade from my 900 I don't think it is warranted at this time for you to switch,
Yes the 920 of course is heavier and has a bigger screen and has a higher resolution so this does sway most people along with the fact it has an amazing capable camera, The OS does not really differ much once you get past the tiles, I personally think a few more firmware updates should solve any problems for the camera and any other issues etc,
Remember this is still the first batch and it really needs ironing out and polishing before it is worth upgrading,
That aside the OS does show promise and I am sure it will eventually be able to do everything we need and more, Try one out before you decide of course.

I completely disagree... and respectfully disagree. I had a 900 and switched. The improvements are subtle yet all over. Like the predictive keyboard is spot on. Voice to email... Voice to text anything is slightly more accurate. THE CAMERA! Lenses, etc. The wieght is a non issue. The camera, oh and lets not forget the camera. At times the battery life, I have an app that leaks.

Honestly if you already have a 900 I would not bother with a 920 at the moment, IMO you won't see a major difference between 7.8 and 8 yet.
I wonder how serious MS is about WP 8, things like Skype aren't great & a good RDP client is from MS is still missing. The fact that I can have a better remote desktop experience on Android is bad, same goes with Skype.
I own a 920 and it is a nice device but its shortcomings start bugging you over time. Also the Nokia Play To DLNA app is still not ready for WP 8.
Thanks Everyone.
It looks like my wife is going to move to an 820, she prefers the size, so that will give me some insight into WP8. The kid’s mode in one of the features she’s looking forward to.
I haven’t received 7.8 on my 900 yet but I’m only keen on some of the home screen changes.
The camera on the 900 has been a disappointment, my old focus took better pics and video.
For me RDP from phone is something I did 5 years ago that doesn’t really have any value for me. A VPN client with a file explorer would be a different story though.
I use Skype on WP7 and it works pretty well, I find it less annoying than the Android version on my Flyer.
Something that caught my eye yesterday were the rumors about an aluminum version of the Lumia coming out this year. If it is anything like the N8 it would certainly have my attention.

lumia 920.........note 2

hi
iam rly confused between those 2 phones
any1 tried them both? tell me ur opinion plz
thanks
I have both. I decided to get the Note 8.0 and stick with the 920 as my daily driver. There are things I love about both wp8 and the samsung note series. This allows me to have both.
If I had to choose, I would still likely choose the 920. Overall it is just a better device IMO. Of course, if apps a a serious requirement for you, android obviously still has more selections. I just find windows phone has the best UI. There was a exclusive Halo app announced today for Windows Phone 8 and RT though.

thanks for ur answer
can u tell me more about why u say lumia 920 better? is its screen big enough or small?as i will use it for reading e-books and surfingh the internet..is the fnt readable? and writing alot...iam not intensive gamer so it doesnt matter...........thanks in advance
The screen on the Lumia is large enough for me. The Note II screen is obviously larger but I believe the PPI is higher on the Lumia. The Lumia is the best in direct sunlight for sure, if that is a consideration.
I think if reading is your biggest concern, the note II is larger but the Lumia is sharper. Also, obviously the Lumia is more pocket friendly.
There are so many considerations that it is impossible to recommend either 100%. I have no bias toward either Android or WP8. To me, pick the best tool for the job.
Sent from my Lumia 920 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
I'm not sure I would like to read eBooks on either one of them - I think both screens are too small for that use case but that of course is just my personal opinion. For surfing the internet and reading articles I never had any issues with the screen size of my 920. I prefer the 920 over my Ativ S (basically an SGS3 with WP8) for reading because the PenTile display in the Ativ S makes white backgrounds look grainier/dirtier than the RGB LCD in the 920. Of course the Note 2 has an RGB AMOLED so this might not be an issue there (never did a side by side comparison).
Battery life seems to be better on the Note 2 though - at least in standby.
What are your other requirements? Would you use the stylus on the note for drawings or writing notes? Are you into photography so that the superior camera in the 920 would be of benefit to you? Nokia has true offline navigation capability if you are traveling a lot abroad but Google Maps on the Note II has a better POI database according to many.
While i only have tried Galaxy s3, note 2, and various other "modern" android Devices only for a short time, i prefer the lumia 920.
Androids play store is a bit bigger, but that is no real problem, as wp is coming along nicely.
In daily use, you will notice that android is really lagging, and also that apps is crashing.
This is not something I have experienced with my Lumia 920.
Furthermore, Nokia provides here maps and here drive+.
These programs gives you offline maps and turn by turn navigation for most of the world.
Another advantage with wp8 is skydrive.
The phone uploads all my pictures and videos to skydrive, and on my computer and tablets, which all is running windows 8 and windows rt,
The pictures appear instantly.

I have both as well.
Note2: +: Big screen, sd card, removable battery, tons of software in android, highly customizable interface, rootable and customs roms
-: a bit unwieldy, tough to see in sunlight, looks kind of cheap, no camera button
Lumia 920: +: Premium feel and design, smaller screen if you want that, don't need to mess around with settings much, simpler interface, better camera
-: Limited software, heavy for some, no sd card, no removable battery, camera button, all buttons on right
Do you want it as primarily a phone or as a phablet is the question.
I'm finding the limitations of wp8 becoming increasingly annoying. You may want to consider the galaxy s4 and the htc one which are closer in size to the 920.

I bought my wife the HTC One (M7) and I don't regret it being her 1st Android device...it runs flawless and the display is the best I've ever seen on any device and her being in the medical profession Android's apps in her field made sense. As for me, I don't play games and I am a full-time college student and Windows Phone does exactly what I need it to do and despite it's limitations there isn't a 3rd party or Homebrew app that did a lesser job than the branded apps. We have T-Mobile where our kids live and barely an AT&T signal and where we live right out no T-Mobile whatsoever and Straight Talk (AT&T) HSPA+ in a place I thought we'd never get it, so VoIP is important which is my one pet peeve with WP. Skype gets it done but it just pisses me off that the brain trust at Microsoft failed and betrayed those who grew up with Windows Mobile through the WP7.x upgrade and left us in the cold with only a Start Menu and dead development today. It's easier said than done to buy a new smart phone every year.
Over the last years, I usually have bought 3-4 smartphones each year, one iPhone back in 2009, and after that, several android phones.
My first android phone was the htc desire, a phone with 150 Mb internal memory.
I regret ever buying it. I also had a lg optimus 3d, a phone with several nice features, but it still had that poor operating system called android.
So, eventually I got the Lumia 900, a wp 7-phone. I really got to enjoy wp, so now I have the Lumia 920. This phone is simply the best phone I ever had. I am now waiting for the rumoured Nokia eos.
I am convinced that it will be worth the waiting.
But for now, I am convinced that my 920 will suffice,
And I will without hesitation recommend this phone to anybody who is asking.

I will suggest Lumia 920, and if display size is not a concern go for iphone it has apps and performance.
Don't go for Android, i have S4 even it lags a lot of times and Random reboots comes free with Android, but i never had any lag in my lumia 920 or iphone 5
WP8 is far better then Android
I've owned a Galaxy SI, SII and SIII (which I still use). I picked up a 920 for testing apps my company is developing on W8, and although initially I enjoyed the 920, it now spends most of its time in my computer bag, while I'm back to using the S3. Why? Severely limited apps, especially in the tools/utilities area, infuriating restrictions on music player apps and supporting utilities, no call blocking apps, etc.
I like to tinker- this phone is not for my kind of consumer. It's great for those who have no desire to customize- smooth as butter and easy to use interface, great camera, competent music player, excellent battery life. But I want more than that- I want, for example, an app with a 4-band parametric EQ, a themed, customized UI, ROM control and a custom kernel to overclock/undervolt/manage memory, wifi tethering, etc...
I have both. Would never replace Note 2 with any phone. I like huge display. Note 2 offers me better readability, easier documents handling, editing and sending. I like the fact that I can customise keyboard (using SwiftKey), widgets, fast access to applications.
Lumia 920 has great navigation. Great camera.

Note2 is good but android is still buggy

I have both and chose the 920 for two reasons: email on WP much nicer and I am now bored with flashing custom roms and tweaking launchers, too much time wasted. Android has a way of sucking you into endless process of perfecting your phone (so much so you forget why you need a phone in the first place!)

I very much agree with you, if you have a lot of spare time or if you just want to kill time and if your phone is everything for you then go for Android, if you want a smartphone that works as a smartphone out of the box go for WP8 or iOS

GO for Lumia 920. I recently switched form Galaxy note 2 and i am really enjoying it. All the necessary applications are available in WP8 and most importantly i am impressed with the smoothness and lag free interface of wp8. The lumia 920 is handy and you can use it one hand only , while with note 2 you have to use both hands.
If you ask me , go for lumia 920 !

Planning to Buy a Lumia 920! Urgent Help?

Hi,I am Planning to buy a Nokia Lumia 920 for my sister. She is upgrading from the Samsung Galaxy S1 I9000 and is inclined towards buying the 920 majorly because of the Camera.I also checked out the Lumia 925 but it is like $100 expensive than the 920 in my country.I have also read that after the Amber Update,The 920's camera outperforms the one on the 925.But I have a major concern before i buy the Lumia 920.I have read that the pictures produced from the camera, turn out to be yellowish and blurry with the Amber Update and also, some have reported the screen flickering issue on the 920.
So would you guys, the ones who use the 920,let me know whether these issues exist on your phone and whether it is wise to get the 920 over the 925?
Thank You

I personaly wouldn`t upgrade my 920 for a 925 as it offers little more than i have now. Also the 925 only has 16GB of storage instead of 32GB on the 920. So i would go for the 920 as they are basicaly the same imo. The 920 is also sturdier than the 925 and can handle drops better because of the build quality.

The camera is great imo, the Nokia Pro Cam app (free) is available in the App Store and offers a lot of optimisation options for making the camera even better especialy for lowlight conditions. I haven`t had the screen flickering isssues ever myself so far so no problem with that.

Lumia 920 great device and agree with "gee2012"...
just update L920 to Amber (if not already), install Nokia Pro Cam and other official apps and phone is ready for making great photos
P.S.
also check official instructions for new WP users

Thanks For Your Help.I am actually getting the 920 at a very great price but I'm quite doubtful about choosing WP8 over android. Is it really worth getting it,considering the Lack of apps/games?

this not true... WP have good and enough games and apps... only problem (for most of people) is lack of pirated stuff this "lack" is from period before 3 years and since then many apps come to WP OS...
Get the 925. I have both. Only 16GB sucks on the 925 compared to 32GB on the 920. Besides that the screen alone kills the 920.
The 925 has a BLACK SCREEN
The 920 has a GREY SCREEN
You will be shocked how much better the 925 looks. The 920 has wireless charging but it takes twice as long to charge. You can buy a wireless charging cover for the 925 though.
920 is HEAVY!!!!!!!
Sent from my RM-820_nam_canada_200 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
The 925 was marketed as alower cost and lower quality hence the reduced weight alternative to the 920. The camera was made better but they cut every other corner. Also the current version of the 920 has a pitch black screen even when on and showing black as a color. Not sure where the previous guy got a grey screen from. Nokia marketed it as a lower cost alternative.
