[Q] Verizon will be at a snails pace to Kitkat upgrade? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

I read that Verizon will be the only carrier not to sell the Nexus 5. Reasoning? Likely it is highly integrated with Google apps such as the forbidden Wallet. Google plans to end fragmentation with this backward compatible version but we all know how Verizon likes to be in complete control. Chances the Note II will see this carrier upgrade, slim to none?

Verizon likes to have full control over the devices which Google doesn't want in its Nexus program. Verizon also doesn't see the potential (Profit) in the Nexus which may not be too far off as it is mainly just us Android addicts that go crazy over it, most mainstream consumers are looking at the G2, Moto X, HTC One, and GS4 (All of which Verizon has on their network).
As for when we will get the update really relies on Samsung and if they want to make it available for the Note 2. The 4.3 update was in the air for a while and being that the GS5 will be announced early next year we may never see 4.4 officially. If we do we may be in luck for once as Verizon and Samsung seemed to have synced up nicely with the 4.3 release and Verizon is actually one of the first carriers to push it out to their Galaxy devices (Note 2, GS3, GS4) but who knows.
I think the low memory requirements for Android and 4.4 were more for porting it to new devices such as watches and to support current low end models, not getting older forgotten about devices finally upgraded.

Most likely we will never see kit-kat. Samsung is fairly slow and Verizon is extremely slow.

Samsung is slow? Are you insane? It's the carrier that is slow. Check your facts pal. Samsung usually gives at least a couple major updates but they are severely limited by Verizon. Especially when we are such an open phone. They take more time to fix the bootloader being unlocked as instructed by Verizon. Samsung is a fantastic company. The fact that the s3 is getting 4.3 is a good indicator of how the note 2 will be treated a little later down the line.

It still take Samsung months to release an update on the international versions. They are only semi quick on the very latest phones. There's no reason a billion dollar company should take that long when a group of developers from this site can port asop Roms by themselves in a matter of hours, albeit with some bugs but these people do this for fun and are way more efficient.

Does anyone know when we will get 4.1.2

I was strolling around the other note 2 forums for different carriers and noticed all of the other us carriers have the 4.1.2 update. But we don't? I know how Verizon is but this is a joke. I mean, it might be a small update and I don't mind but it really is outrageous that Verizon can be lazy to catch up on software updates.
If anything, I might just root.
Any thoughts on this guys? Or if there is an expected release for 4.1.2. Thanks!
Big Red doesn't hurry on updates then people will be less likely to buy new phones. Verizon doesn't like the N2 anyway, because it competes with their DNA.

Not really a huge difference anyway. 4.2 isn't much different either. Had a nexus and 4.2 was overrated

Seems to make sense. DNA is nowhere near a threat to the note 2 so you do have a point. I may consider rooting over the next weekend when Im off work. I'll probably have to plan out what I'll do after root though.

Rooting shoulda been the first thing on the todo list

Hogwash. It is a different price range and market. There is no substantiating evidence supporting that whatsoever. It brings them contracts, they don't care what device it is.

You realize Verizon determines when it officially rolls out to our devices, right? It's going to be a while until we get it. The international Note 2 will most likely get it right away though.

Jelly Bean (4.2.2)
In theory, we should be getting Jelly Bean (4.2.2) along with most of the S4 apps shortly as well (provided VZW doesn't screw us over...like always).
Then again, I'm waiting for the some final GPS patches to be merged into CM10.1, then I'll probably be running that full time.

When Samsung says "looking at May-June for 4.2.2 Galaxy Note 2/S3 updates", that means' International. Then, Verizon has to take that update, drop it's pants and pop a squat on it, smear it all over the place, hold on to it for a few more months to let it really ferment and get nasty, then they'll post some kind of update changelog wherein Verizon is God himself and is sending us a gift from heaven that they concocted.
Samsung must sit there and shake their head every time Verizon updates one of their phones months after they did.

How long do you think the s4 will be a supported phone?

I am trying to decide on either keeping my new s4, which I'm having a ton of fun with and really like, or returning it and going back to my iPhone 5. The iPhone is always supported my developers and by Apple to keep the phone working well throughout the 2 year contract. I'm mostly worried about how fast android manufacturers are moving and just don't want to get stuck using a phone that doesn't have any support after 6 or even 12 months.
Look at the galaxy s3! Been out for quite some time and is still fully supported, by Samsung and the rom community. So stop deliberating. You have a flagship phone, they tend to be supported for a while.

Many galaxy s2 phones just recently got updates, so that would put Samsung atleast a 2 year support window. It was supported from gingerbread to ICS now to jellybean. I wouldn't worry about getting manufacturer support during your contract. As a bonus, Verizon has been improving its own update timeline. I think we will be golden.
Of course that does not take into account the ROM dev community support. The galaxy line of phones typically sees amazing adoption and continuing support. Unless Sammie and Verizon really crack down on locking us down, our devs should be able to keep us moving forward.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I'm just worried about having a phone that in a year or so will be out of date and just don't want to be stuck.

Hopefully not TOO long since they screwed the S3 up with their most recent update. We got extra bloat and some of the fluff from the S4 like the resource hogging multi window (perhaps not the best app for a dual core). Not to mention radio reception got worse along with battery life.
Samsung tends to give good support. With a flagship across all the major carriers the s4 will see amazing dev support.

Just noticed this and had to clarify that the S4 is not Verizon's first AWS device... not even close. It's one of seven that they're currently selling, and came to market a good six months after their first.

Until the S5
It will definitely be at least supported until the next Galaxy, and following the pattern that is likely to be next year. In addition to that, it will likely be supported for quite some time after because not everyone can get the new devices as soon as they come out. My guess would be at least anther six months, probably more. So if you are wondering if the S4 will last you until your next upgrade, I would say it is very likely that it will.

i should have said one of the first. you're correct there are several aws devices on verizon, but no handsets yet. the s4 will be in the first batch of phones to be lte and aws compatible.
the great hardware and large number of s4 sold (in user's hands) will be the main driver for having this phone supported for some time.

[Q] End of Galaxy user? Should i get Nexus 4?

I had iPhone 3G as my first phone, following by 4s then i switched to Galaxy s3 in April 2013. I've learned a lot, i've flashed many custom roms, kernel etc.
After seeing Samsung delaying updates and transporting regional lock along with kitkat update are the reason that i come to decision that i will sell my galaxy s3 for Nexus 4 (cant afford n5 yet).
I need your help guys
How good is the battery on nexus 4 compared to galaxy s3?
Idc about storage
This is a q&a thread, so it also belongs there. But to answer your question. Comparing stock of both devices, the s3 definitely wins. Samsung is good at creating a good battery life, even with touchwiz

S3 wins hands down. Tho I would recommend getting sony because don't delay the update
I disagree.
Bells and whistles like smart stay that doesn't even work properly after the jellybean update or a maybe slightly better camera (though I don't find much difference) doesn't outweight not having proper multitask. Also, neither touchwiz nor aosp have the nexus smoothness. Even my dad's former galaxy nexus feels slightly better than my s3.
If you can live with not having an sdcard or a removable battery, I'd say the n4 provides a better user experience (did try it for about a month). The only reason I'm not getting the n4 is because I'm waiting out the n5.

This is a joke, right? S3 is in overall better then the nexus 4. S3 will get 4.4. Regional lock can be removed. Also SD-Card and removable battery is essential for a phone in my opinion. (Plus, the N4 is an Lg device ) So if you don't plan to go from S3 to N5, stick to the S3!

Don't worry about it. LG rarely updates a phone more than once or twice anyway. The devs at XDA will take care of us as long as they still use it. Like you said, it's got more than enough horsepower to last a while. Probably the only real killer will be when everyone goes to x64 operating systems.

This is indeed the phone to beat. Thank you very much for the information you have.
I read that a carrier in Canada has put an "end of life" on the g2, and they do list s4 as an alternative. It's also known that the g3 is in the works and will be out this summer. 4.4.2 may be the last official android version for the g2.
However! There is a huge development community behind the g2, so it's likely that versions will continue well into the future, the g3 ROM will likely be ported to the g2. When the g2 does stop receiving official updates, I would root and be happy with what the devs here can cook up

All this means is that LG is going to stop producing the phone in favor of a newer model. Samsung makes their phones for years beyond their relevant lifespan and you can still find ancient Galaxy phones like the S2 on the shelves. The S3 is still the absolute go-to phone for any free contract, prepaid or non-contract deals. LG is a much smaller manufacturer and doesn't have the deals and agreements like Samsung does to pimp out their phones.
The Galaxy S4 is not going anywhere, it's going to stick around just as long as any of the Galaxy S flagships if not longer. The LG G2 will just be EoL as far as the carrier is concerned. So if you're a Bell customer, I'd recommend to get familiar with modifying your phone because Bell is likely not to push you any future updates.

Not sure what you mean by deals because the G2 was free much sooner than the S3. The OG and G2 both saw rapid price drops.

When I got my G2, the S3 was being peddled by every single carrier and given out like candy. You are/were able to pick up the S3 on almost any shelf as a prepaid device and if you signed into any deal that had free phones you got a S3. Samsung is still most likely making the S3, "emerging markets"(I assume) and every prepaid company basically relies on that phone. LG has none of those deals really and you'll never find a G2 in a plastic package hanging on a shelf at Walmart. Within 6 months, you'll most likely see the S4 in those packages.
This just says that LG is going to stop production of the G2 most likely because the G3 is coming out. LG doesn't have the market or ability to continue to sell their old flagship phone for years on end. They probably didn't have a huge profit margin on it since they can't sell and pump out millions upon millions of the phone. Thus since sales are tapering off and people are going for the new M8/S5 they're focusing on moving forward.
This could also just simply mean Bell is going to stop selling it since it's not selling well for them.

How can anyone think the S4 is a superior phone to this?

It's probably only LG's fault, not the carriers. If LG stopped making the G2 and started the G3 (due to limited manufacturing capacity), the carriers can't get any more stock so they list it as End Of Life. Meanwhile, the S4 is still being manufactured (even the S3 4G is still manufactured) so that's why they list it as alternative.

Can you buy a Nexus 4 today, and Google i think has 18 month update policy, so next version might be the last for Nexus 4 too. Fact is in today's tech world, you have a new flagship every 6 months, that does not necessarily mean you have to upgrade every 6 months.
Even if 4.5 is launched by end of this year, 95% of apps will still work on 4.4 and our phone is more then capable to handle them. So sit back and enjoy mate, until you wanna get suck in number wars and not care about the experience
I wouldn't let the EOL tag scare anybody away from this beast of a phone. Thanks to the awesome XDA forums, rooting, and a new battery; I made my old Droid Eris last for 2+ years and still going strong before getting a different phone. And the Droid Eris was EOL like 3 hours after I bought it haha

Nope. The last Android for G2 will be in 2015. Look for Optimus G Pro, it is year old and it got Kitkat 2nd update in Korea. So stop FUD
