Hangouts with sms is great along with the other updated apps, but damn I love the Google Experience launcher. Way less options than nova or apex, but the always-on hotword detection on homescreens is great. Just wondering if anyone else here is trying them out?

i think i installed 90% of them, so far so good. i cant wait for our phone to have it.

Apparently CM will continue to focus on 4.3 builds, so I don't expect a CM11 anytime soon. Knowing our luck with this device, we'll probably have issues with kit kat builds anyway. Still, the launcher and hangouts are pretty badass. It's just a shame there's no official support for icon packs with stock launchers. I have to use an xposed module to use my icon pack of choice on this new launcher and I sometimes feel like it slightly slows the device down.

I had most of the 4.4 .APKs (including the launcher and Google Now) installed on my cm10.2 build for the past day or so, but today I experienced the crash/bootloop scenario that's been plaguing the nightly builds lately; after a forced reboot, all the 4.4 apps were gone, and since I had frozen Trebuchet in TiBU, I was without a launcher and had to restore a NAND backup. Was I supposed to lock all the 4.4 apps into the system folder or something?

I don't know why they would disappear but you could have enabled trebuchet without restoring. You could have accessed the settings through quick settings, went to the apps section, found trebuchet and hit enable. Also, there's no reason to freeze it. Once you switch to a different launcher and reboot, none of your other installed launchers will run. Just for future reference.

Settings was even crashing upon opening; it was incredibly odd. As for the freezing, I and many others who installed the 4.4 launcher were experiencing the default launcher setting not sticking even after setting it to the 4.4 launcher; freezing Trebuchet (the only other one I had installed) fixed this. But that obviously didn't work out so well for me...

I browse /r/Android on reddit often, and people were going nuts posting links to all the apks. I'm sure they're all over the internet by now.
But yes, that's the launcher I'm running. It's so limited in features compared to others, but it really does everything I need. Some people don't seem to like the google now to the left of the main homescreen, but I'm digging it.
I'm really hoping for kit kat to make it's way to our device though. I saw there's a CM11 branch, but who knows what kind of code needs updating and/or compatibility issues.

Do you need to be rooted to do this I keep getting a parsing error

Checking it out myself, thanks to your thread, however after installing the apks I somehow seem to have broken the "okay Google" feature. Google search updated itself and all after installation but even if I choose search manually now it still won't respond to the command.
Your right tho, the launcher is simple but works well. The only thing I don't care for is the constant Google search box on the home screen especially when all you have to do is say the command and it goes straight there.

CM11 Alpha for the INC4G
You've got to check out Cyanogenmod 11 for our device. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2552150 I had to flash the updated Recovery but I have had no issues so far. There's a fair bit in 4.4 that you don't get from the base Kit Kat apps that you can install for 4.1 and up.

CM 11 nightly
I've been using the nightly from 12-26 and it is 4.4.2 I have had no issues at all, and it seems to be running smooth. Battery is draining pretty well, but it does in any rom due to the lack of signal from my house. I'm at the office now, running wifi and it seems to be draining less.

This is apparently expected behavior at this point. If you have less running in the background, it won't happen. If you reboot, you should see it stop until you've got too much going on.
I have had good success messing with the performance settings and ultimately using the "V6 Supercharger" with this rom. The lock screen is much more reliable for me now. Do a search for it in all forums and I'm sure you'll find the thread.

I really liked Smooth Bean but I couldn't use it because a lot of games were incompatible with it. The games would load up fine but then freeze at certain screens. It was a different screen for every game, but it was always the same screen for that particular game. The few that come to mind are Cut the Rope HD, Slice It!, Jewel Star, and Open Sea.

I am using the latest, just downloaded it today, barebones version. I just installed the GHarmony JB ROM and it had the same problem. I then went back to the GHarmony ICS I was using previously and tasker install was fine. I tried to take the build fingerprint out of the build.prop from HarmonyICS and apply it after installing Smoothbean and run market fix and still can't load tasker.
ro.build.fingerprint=asus/WW epad/EeePad.4.0.3/IML74K/WW epad-9.4.2.21-20120323:user/release-keys
It looks like the GHarmony ICS rom which works was 120dpi, and I am running 120dpi on smoothbean...
I may just have to load the ICS rom and try and backup the apk, reload jb and install...
Do others using this ROM have tasker installed? It may be that I am doing something wrong with the market fix, it seems like there are several versions of the instructions out there..

Okay, doing that helped with the games. However, some apps still don't work. For example, the weather app, Eye in Sky, shows up in the Play Store as incompatible with the device, so I tried to side-load it and it wouldn't install. It just says "app not installed." Should I change the build.prop?
Edit: I think my problem with Eye in Sky is the same as wuench's problem with Tasker.
You guys might want to think that it is the app and not the ROM. The same thing happened when ICS Started out with HBO GO for me. Not all apps have been converted to work on the Jellybean framework. They may seem almost the same at most points, but since I just ripped through a crap load of HTML files and smail files as well. They are quiet different. I am sorry that those particular apps will not work, but the best suggestion I can offer is contact the app developer. My current work is using a clone base of a Motorola Xoom which is widely supported in the Play Store Market. When it come available for compatibility then it will work, trust me.

Yeah, I don't know what it could be. Eye in Sky works with Dirty Bean. It shows up in the Play Store and it can be side-loaded for that ROM. Oh well, it's not the only weather app. It has a nice UI, though.
Well, tasker will not install from the backup. I found the developers website and downloaded the apk directly, that install failed as well. I found a reference in their forum about needing the maps library installed, I was going to check the logs for errors but I can't find a log viewer application that works on Jelly Bean ATM. It sounds like some permissions were changed for log viewing and a lot of the apps need to be updated.
It seems like a really great ROM, these app issues are the only things I have noticed. I think you are right, these developers just haven't had time to support JB yet...

Yes it does but you cannot run this framework.res from this device to another device. Each device has a different framework-res configuration. RESOLVED- Needed latest CWM

Android ITSELF is going to be a launcher? GAMECHANGER!

According to the boys over at Androidpolice (who do a great job tearing through code) Google apparently has big plans going forward.
One of users biggest issues with Android has always been updates, getting manufactures to issue updates is hard enough but when you add carriers on top of that (mankind's closest approximation to pure evil) it becomes an incredible headache to get ANY update.
Google solution: cut them both out of the loop. Here's how... Several years ago they began decoupling the core pieces of Android so they could be updated outside of interference from the Playstore. Apps such as Calendar, YouTube, Gmail, Google+, etc. What this does is it allows Google to update and iterate much faster. There have been several major updates to Google+ and YouTube for example in just the last 9 MONTHS. It looks like that trend will continue as even more pieces will be decoupled in a few weeks (Dialer, messaging, Camera, and gallery) but that Android itself will be decoupled as LAUNCHER.
GAME. CHANGER.
Now understand there is still underlying base code that if Google wanted to change would either have to be submitted or just rolled out with new phones but Google has positioned themselves to make that irrelevant. What people care about is the front facing, user EXPERIENCE. What we see when we are using the phone itself. THIS is what Android is to most people.
If this can now be changed independent of interference, if user interface changes can be tweaked and modified on Google's timetable now instead of someone else's, if users will have the ability to run "Stock" Android on any phone then this is not hyperbole it really is a game changer.
Thoughts?

interesting , thanks:good:
so according to my understanding, 4.4 will have 2 operating layers..
the first layer is for pure google enviroment for google updates and google apps, while the second layer is for 3rd party apps or OEM skins..
am i right?
Sort of. There will be a base code which underlies everything as it does now. On this you can build Touchwiz, LGs Optimus skin or whatever.
The core Google Apps will be updated, as they are now, from the Google playstore.
In addition Androids interface itself, the part you see and touch, will be able to be updated in the Google playstore. Think a launcher like Nova or apex but with deeper integration and smoother running.
Now Google will be able to tweak and modify without interference multiple times a year if it so chooses.

finally less hardware dependance
I'm glad to see all the core apps starting to be independently released through the play store for faster updates. One way to by pass slow OEM update processes.
Some misinformation here. This is not Android, as a whole, going to the playstore - its just the launcher. Not to mention this is purely speculation anyways. The launcher is simply the home screen. Its just another apk that sits in /system/app just like the core gapps all do. This does NOT affect anything more than the home screen and app drawer. This definitely would not streamline Google updates either. The main chunks of Android still sit in the framework .jars and other key system packages that can't just be decoupled and packaged for download in the Play Store. Sure, if they wanted to update how the home screen or app drawer looks or works they can just push an update to the Play Store. Anything more than that, though, and they still have to go through the same current process for updating.
Yeah I see how you could read it that way. My intent was that the interface itself will be in the launcher.

Yea there is no way that would work, too many different phones and manufacturers, if it was that simple we could flash any rom from any phone. Unfortunately there will never be a speed up on the manufacturer level not until there was massive protest and or loss of sales for them, and the carriers plane and simple dont care about the end users at all, thats why we have the awesome developers here to do what the carriers and manufacturers refuse to do. But yes its pretty sad when we as a community are using a fully working rom months hell sometimes almost a year before an actual update comes out. Sucks even more if your a Verizon customer and they can push an exploit patch out within days of a phones release yet want to sit on a full os update for months on end and AT&T just plain dont care if your junk gets an update or not.

Both of you are right. But also..parts of your comments are wrong. You can hide other stuff in a launcher. Just because it's labeled as a launcher, doesn't mean OTHER apps can be integrated. Look at G+ it used to have the messenger and the G+app. (SAME app, just a short cut) and launchers from 3rd party developers sit in data/app(doesn't matter just trying not to confuse people) and lastly the" main chunks" Are not necessarily ALL framework changes. A lot of the big updates, really are JUST apps. EVEN as a developer you can see about half of the big features are apps. And now..sorry, I don't mean to be rude, DaT Franchise. But the first sentence in your comment is...well completely,COMPLETELY wrong as far as apps go, one app can work on *ALL* phones if it is developed properly. Notice, you can take any gmail.apk and install it on any phone..any screen size...any hardware that runs android. Nova launcher, one app that works on all (4.0 and up) devices. Sure. The "android launcher" May only be available on 4.0 and up. If I'm wrong let me know. If I offended. Anyone let me know. I do not mean to offend
Sent from my LG-D800 using Tapatalk 4
I know the difference between an apk and the os itself and not to be rude myself but if your statement is correct then i should be able to pull the lockscreen apk and jar mod them and use it on my HTC one or vice versa but it doesn't work that way because of the system ui itself as a whole, and depending oh how deeply it is integrated into the system as in i can push and run the optimus g launcher on my HTC and Note2 but i cant push and use the HTC launcher on my G or my note2. And i am no developer but im pretty sure cooking a good rom is a lot more then updating a few apks, and again if it was that simple we would all be enjoying a fully 100% working CM 10.2 rom right now.
What Google is doing is making the launcher itself available like gmail and YouTube. So they will simply recode the launcher (which will be launcher 3) so it can be its own app.
As it stands now, any Google system apps see their update go to data/app anyway so that the update can be uninstalled if the update causes issues. (If you're rooted, delete the system app for say, hangouts, and it will still be usable and in your app drawer because you didn't delete the update that sits in data/app. Plus hangouts relies on no framework files to run)
I believe this is the route Google is going with the launcher since it doesn't rely on framework jars to run now

That is different though, you CAN use the stock aosp launcher on any phone, htc,lg Samsung and the rest don't like other phones looking like theirs...so they integrate literally EVERYTHING into their framework. And I completely understand where you're coming from. And as far as roms go, I (as a beginning developer...I've built a couple roms..nothing groundbreaking) know it's more than that. Like I said in my comment, I said SOME of the features are apps. In NO WAY can you completely update android through apps. There are changes in framework And system files.
Sent from my LG-D800 using Tapatalk 4
I would rather they decoupled the OS from the hardware layer altogether. Just a launcher wont bring in the goodies.
have manufacturers only provide hardware driver updates will solve almost all vomplaining about slow update cycles.
There is another, rather nefarious set of effects that result from those changes.

Android 4.4 Kit Kat opinions

Well guys, the update has started rolling out, has anyone running stock gotten it?
How much of a difference does ART make? How's the overall feel of the device compared to 4.3?
Post pics if you do get the notification
BTW I DO NOT recommend using the old framework trick, the last time I did it I had to factory reset my sister's N10 because the play store stopped working and nothing I did could fix it without the reset (which is worse than it sounds when a device isn't rooted)
The Play Store error after the framework trick can be fixed by signing out of your Google account then back in. No need to wipe the device.

I like the battery improvements. Charging is faster (use POGO) and the run time appears longer (I had not timed prior, so it's anecdotal).
As I don't jump into settings to frequently, I'm a little surprised with the change but not disappointed.
As for transparency and ART? Those were new features that were promised to the N5. It's too bad they are not present, but not a reason for me to revert back to 4.3.
Perhaps Transparency and ART are coming to the N10 2014 edition (Wait for this to show up in all the media hype).
My opinion:
1- KitKat without the new ART is sucks...
2- KitKat without the new translucide bars is more sucks... Solution: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.heightdev.translucentbars
3- The Nexus with KitKat is faster.

I had FoxFi installed and configured before updating. Still works just fine.
After struggling to get my system cleaned up enough to take the OTA, I finally upgraded today. Had root and Xposed primarily for cosmetic reasons. So far no regrets. It was a little sluggish for most of the day but seems to have settled in nicely. No real issues other than initially having trouble updating Google Play Services. The Play store simply didn't want to finish the download, but eventually it did. Also the phone was running hot for much of the day and battery life wasn't great, but I was also in some poor service areas. I'll report back if it continues.
Other than that, I'm loving it. Might wait a few more months before getting a new phone now, even though my contract is up in June.
5 is smooth, but the phone runs very hot. This is with our without location turned on.

I am running stock rooted lollipop on MDK bootloader. Performance is good so far better than on KitKat.
First time poster. Long time browser.
Just took the OTA. Formerly rooted on KK. Was a little laggy at first but has gotten better. I like the look. Contract is up in a month and figured whatever I get next will have it anyways so I might as well see what it's all about.
I flashed the rooted oc1 from nc5 and WOW
touchwiz lag is no longer a thing. Samsung finally let you access the camera from a secure lock screen. pattern lock doesn't lag anymore. you don't have to jump through hoops to change your wallpaper for home and lock screens. messages actually send.
on top of that, everything is stupid fast. this is the best thing Verizon and Samsung have ever done, and at this point the galaxy s6 doesn't seem so bad.
Don't remember which update removed SD card write privileges, but they appear to be back. I can once again use ES File Explorer to copy music/pictures to my SD card (running stock, unrooted).
Win some lose some, it looks like some available actions using the Secure Settings app (usually paired w/ Tasker) have been stripped away: toggling data on/off now requires root.
Everything seems smoother, noticeably swype.
Not really digging the new notification cards that cover the top section of the screen and sit for maybe a whole 10 seconds before going away.... are they bothering anyone else?

The SD card functionality isn't fully there. Multiple apps (eg ttorrent) still can't write to the SD card. I was able to do it under Kit Kat after installing an app to restore that function. Is anyone else experiencinthe this? If so, is there a fix coming (or an internal setting I am missing)?

About 10 minutes ago, I ran a Play Store app called SDFix https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.sdfix and it fixed my SD Card write problem. App says it's for KitKat but it works on Lollipop.

Stable roms?

Can everyone post a list of stable roms for I717? I don't like going through the trouble of backing up all my data and flashing a new rom only to have it crash multiple times per day and have something like bluetooth not work reliably at all. Maybe some people enjoy playing with that (a lot of the most popular roms at the top of the forum are like this), but I don't!
I'll start the list and say that Beanstalk 4.4 is extremely stable, only had it reset on me twice in one year, and bluetooth works 100%. Only issue is that you can't move apps to SD so you run out of space quick (thanks to kitkat). I'd love to find something above kitkat this stable...
And I'll add some that I have tried and failed:
Candy5: No matter what Gapps I tried (yes pico etc), none of them installed and even after going through every suggestion in the thread I could not get a simple google play installed. Stock browser crashes every 2 minutes.
Pac-rom: Promising but crashes 10+ times per day. Often does not power on unless you boot into recovery and select reboot. GPS is terrible, google maps often loses it's place and gives turn-by-turn directions 60 seconds too late. Stock browser crashes all the time as well.
CM: Bluetooth reliability is terrible. Quincyatt not updated since 2014.
Sounds like you should stick with beanstalk or return the device to stock. When you rooted your device, it opened up security issues so it'll never be as solid as you'd like. What hasn't been updated since 2014?

CM for I717.
I don't like going back to stock because IMO it's less secure (heartbleed is a pretty big security hole). If you leave root access disabled and don't download shady apps a custom rom isn't any more insecure.

Edit: Just seen you have tried my roms? You should check the dates on them because most are from 2015. If you need more help than that then post in the thread for the rom you need help with. Read read read. Your issue with gapps has been discussed over and over again! Nobody is here to spoonfeed anyone.

Sorry ment stock CM, here download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=quincyatt
Just listing the roms I've tried and have been unusable (crashing 1 or more times per day and something major like bluetooth being unreliable)

Yes, I tried every suggestion in the thread and it still didn't work. After trying pac-rom for a couple days (and having it crash 20+ times) I just tried wiping it and flashing candy again, and now Gapps with google play worked the first time with no troubleshooting. Shrug.
Seems rock-solid so far though. Can't post in that thread since I have too few posts, so one question, if I do the OTA download for the new 4.0, can I just flash it on top of my 3.9 version or do I need to wipe everything and start over? Also, under Settings, Apps, if I click an app and move to SD card, it will sit there and say "moving" forever. If I exit settings and come back sometimes the app will actually show moved to SD list though.
And the stock calendar app doesn't seem to let me log in, it says "Sign in to get the most out of your device". Then I enter the email I've always used and it says "This account already exists on your device." But there's no other way to actually select that account. What am I doing wrong?

Don't do the OTA yet since BB won't let me upload my roms. The ota notification is a fluke. You'll have to flash the rom fresh between trying to find the right gapps which will work on your device. Candy is the most stable of all my builds currently.

The ota is ready now if you wish to try that.

Still can't post in the main thread but:
-If you turn on "Directly show pattern view", nothing shows on the lock screen besides the dots (time, weather, owner info, notifications).
-I had the dreaded bluetooth bug happen the other day, do you get many reports of this? (bluetooth stops working while streaming music, and does not turn back on until a phone reset).
-Stock calendar cannot be logged into (edit: just installed the google calendar from the app store which worked fine)
Unfortunately these are all deal breakers for me but I really like the rom otherwise, I don't want to switch back
Any way to enable HDMI output? (I have the adapter which worked before).

Must be on stock based rom and that being said, not all of those work. I know Saurom, Blackstar Blackjelly and OnlyOne Goldie work.
Edit: on my device.

I heavily utilize the "Move to SD card" option because otherwise the default storage doesn't hold more than 10 or so apps, but I've had a problem with Candy5 twice now where my phone will crash, and upon reboot, all the apps that were moved to SD card are gone. Anyone else encounter this?
I wish I could post in the normal thread.
Installed the latest Candy5 20151031, did a complete wipe of everything per the instructions, and after installing 1 app (gmail), the phone reboot the first time gmail opened while placing the gmail widget down.
Here's a list of ROMs I've tested:
BlackSTAR XI - Best ROM for the i717. Super stable and fast.
CM Official - Good, but very buggy. SD card breaks, phone reboots often, HW overlays, etc.
Padawan - Not much new here, just a simple modded version of stock. Very stable but not too fast.
Candy5 - Very laggy, as LP is still in development for i717.
CM11 Unofficial - A bit laggy, HW overlays.
All in all I'm a huge fan of BlackSTAR XI, best ROM I've seen so far.
