Reset counter in bricked Jelly Bean? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I should just delete the pictures in the camera folder from the internal store from my computer, when the phone froze and I had to disconnect it and restart it. It would then only go in bootloop, and I could just access download mode, not recovery. Odin just stucks on "nand write start" and then fails, no matter what rom/cable/odin version I try. The phone has always been stock, and it was on 4.1.2 when this happened. I was about to ship the phone back to Samsung as there is still warranty left on it, when I noticed that I now has 2 counts of custom firmware in download mode, probably after trying to flash Siyah kernel, even tho Odin would'nt flash that either.
Made a jig, and the phone goes into download mode, but it wont reset because of the newer firmware I guess.
Any other way to reset counter? If not; should I try to flash pit files as a chance to get it working again?

Ive had the problem of odin not getting passed nand write. After about the 5th/6th time it worked. Think I also tried different filmware ie bloated carrier then stock unbloated link below. Use odin 3.0.7. Not sure about the counts though.

That is actually the firmware I've tried the most, flashed another S2 with it, so I know the image is valid, and the computer/cable/drivers is correct. Also tried odin 3.07 now, among with many other older versions, but always stuck on "nand write start".
Nothing to lose to flash pit now?

Im sure you know your situation. If samsung see youve flashed stuff, they can refuse warranty. If you brick your phone, how can they tell what youve done.
And a jig only resets counter on gb/old bootloader. If youve no recovery, and odin doesnt flash anything, then I cant see how you can change anything.

Unexplained boot loop

Hi all, I hope you guys can help as I'm coming up blank here after days of trying to fix this.
First, yes I read this thread and a few people were reporting the same problem but the solution was always to flash a stock firmware with odin.
Right now my wife's phone is stuck in a boot loop, she doesn't do anything out of the ordinary with it, I rooted it when she first got it 3 months ago and then flashed a stock kernel to get rid of the yellow triangle and it has worked perfectly until last week when she told me it was stuck at the galaxy s2 logo. No problem I though, I'll just flash a stock rom with odin and all will be well.
Well it didn't work out that way, I've flashed the original firmware, an ICS leak, Villainrom 1.1 and XXKI3 multiple times, with and without pit file + re-partition. I've flashed the old bootloader and I've tried a few custom kernels as well, and multiple combinations of the above. Nothing is getting it past the boot loop. The only result I've had that is any different to how I started is with an ICS build I got a screen saying kernel panic upload (or something like that, I don't have that rom flashed at the moment). When I connect at this time odin recognises the phone so I guess it's in download mode.
I can't get into recovery mode so I can't do a factory reset, when I press vol-up, home and power I get a blank screen for a moment followed by the same boot loop. I can get into download mode and odin is reporting successful on every flash. When I flash a custom rom or kernel I get the yellow triangle, it goes away when I flash a stock rom or kernel.
According to my wife just before the crash android market reported updates available and she installed them. I don't know if that's related or not but she says when she went back to the phone it had hung so she turned off the phone, upon turning it on it was stuck in boot (the big animated purple S part of the boot) so she removed the battery and since then it doesn't get past the initial galaxy S2 screen, sometimes, depending on which kernel it's on, the galaxy screen goes blank for a second or two and then the logo comes back.
I've really tried everything I can think to try, warranty isn't really an option as I'm in Saudi Arabia and I've been told it will take 3 months to get the phone back, also I can't easily access a jig, I'd have to make one and I'm not too confident in my ability to do that.
If anyone has any ideas at this point please help, I can't think of anything else I can do here.
tl;dr random boot loop, tried flashing everything I can find, no recovery mode but download mode works fine, help!

Flash a full wipe firmware and see if that helps, if you need one there is a link at the bottom of my insecure kernel thread.
Thanks Odia,
I just flashed the firmware at the bottom of your thread, I9100XWKE7_CL215725_REV02_user_low. Tried it twice for good measure.
Unfortunately nothing has changed on the phone, still can't get into recovery or past the galaxy s2 logo.

Have you tried with repartition and update bootloader ticked?
I didn't tick either of those this time but I have ticked repartition with a different firmware that came with a pit file. Do I need a pit file or can I tick repartition without it?

You need a pit file, use the 1 from the other firmware.
Ok, I just tried XWKE7 again with a pit file with re-partition ticked. Also tried flashing the old bootloader again with update bootloader ticked.
No change I'm afraid.

Most strange, look like your off to service
That's most unfortunate, I'm in Saudi Arabia and they have quoted 3 months to get the phone back under warranty although in reality I'd be lucky to get it back at all.
Are my options really exhausted or is there anything extreme I can try?
I ended up making a jig and took it for warranty repair and they were able to do it locally, it only took a few days.
The curious thing is even though I repartitioned several times using two different pit files the sdcard partition was still intact.
I'm pretty sure I was doing it right and the yellow triangle was coming and going as I was flashing stock and custom kernels so the flashes were taking.
I don't speak Arabic so I couldn't ask how they fixed it but what do you think was the problem? I was very surprised to find the data intact, it even had the same stock ROM that I flashed before I took it for service still installed.
Anyway thanks for your help in this thread odia.

[Q] About changing bootloader...

Today I had to flash my official firmware back to my phone (I had root on it before) and I needed to reset my flash counter. So I have a USB Jig, and I needed to put the old bootloader back to my phone so that the Jig would work.
I tried to flash it with Odin by putting it to PDA-section. Odin started to do its thing but it stuck for a while and it said SetupConnection..
Eventually Odin told I had failed the flashing and the box turned red.
But I still think it somehow changed the bootloader because I was able to use Jig and now my counter shows 0.
So what do you think went wrong?
I've never flashed a bootloader before so I don't know how the process should even go. I've only flashed firmwares.
But thanks for answers!
Bootloader go in Bootloader not PDA, I know many say otherwise and it work for them even in PDA.

I know that it can be flashed from both places and I also tried to flash it by using Bootloader but the same thing happened again.

[Q] Handy suddenly in bootloop. No flashing with odin possible. Now yellow triangle.

Hello,
I read a lot of threads but nothing worked and now I just want to now if my handy is dead! I hope you can give me some information. Maybe some solutions.
Here is my actual situation:
On day my handy was turned off. I tried to turn it on but it keeps in a bootloop. Only the first GT-!9100 was seen and it restarts.
I took out the battery and started it again. Then it booted until the message "App 1 of 1 will be optimized". I waited a long time (about 2 hours) and nothing happend. I took out the battery and tried to boot again. Same problem like at the beginning - again bootloop.
Then I tried to get in recovery mode. It worked! I wiped the cache and restartet my handy. But again bootloop. Now I couldn't get into recovery mode. The droid was lying with a red triangle and my handy restartet automatically. So I tried the download mode. It worked! I downloaded from sammobile the actual firmware I9100XWLSD_I9100DBTLS7_DBT. I tried to flash it with odin v3 1.85 over the PDA button. I connected the handy with odin it tells me that he found my handy and I started to flash. It stucks at cache.img. I waited over night. Nothing happend. Still stucking on cache.img. I took my battery out an dwhen I put it back an started may handy I get now the yellow triangle "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again."
So tried another one with three parts and PIT. In this time with re-partition in odin. But same procedure. I stucked at cache.img.
I still have the yellow triangle and I only can get into download mode.
Then I heard from soft/hard brick problem. I also tried the solution with only flashing the PIT. But no success
So I tried a custom kernel Clockwork Mode Recovery (GT-I9100_JB_ClockworkMod-Recovery_6.0.2.9.tar) to get in recovery mode back. I tried to flash but it stuicks again at "NAND write". I waited again. Nothing happend. So I restarted my handy with tooking out the battery and putting it back again. But in download mode I see that my handy has a custom binary! So it worked. But I can't get into recovery mode of Clockwork
I also tried CF-Root. Here the same problem!
What's wrong with my handy? Is it broken? I've heard maybe I have to re-partition my hand over adb but I found nothing.
One thing is that for half a year I had a problem with my internal SD. It could not mount. After a update of the firmware (luckiely there was a new one!) over OTA it worked again. Maybe I have really a problem with my internal memory...
I hope I have give you all neede information to analyze my problem and I hope really you can help me. If not then it would be good to know if my handy is dead.
Thanks in advance
Best regards,
mr.mash

do u have your phone in warranty ?
also as u can get into download mode try flashing kernel stock kernel first then the flash the stock rom (3 way package) .. do not use pit
pit shud b the last option
I can image that the following happened to your phone (not sure, only a guess):
- you were on Android 2.3.x or 4.0.x
- there was on OTA update to 4.0.4 which caused the 'updating Apps' message
- for what reason ever it was not able to update all apps successfully
- you went to recovery and *wiped*!
Being on 4.0.4 this bricked your phone due to the emmc brick bug. After that all flashing / booting / etc. will fail ...
If this is the case, there is not much to do. There is a program and a thread to modify the partition table to make it re-useable, but only in special cases.

@neerajganga:
No warranty anymore I tried the stock firmware from sammobile (I9100XWLSD_I9100DBTLS7_DBT) in Odin with PDA. But I get stucked on cache.img. Or is there another stock kernel I can use?
@AndDiSa:
I was on the latest stock firmware 4.1.2.
Do you know where I can find this threat to modify the partition table to make it re-useable?
Thanks

Tee thread is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1823918, but if you were already on 4.1.2, you should be save. Probably it's something different and I was wrong.
@neerajganga:
I used a different PC with a different version of Windows (WIN7 on the 1st PC and WIN XP on the 2nd one). Same problem. Odin keeps stucking on cache.img :'(
I read the thread of the emmc brick bug but my problem is that for solution one I can't flash Siyeh Kernel 5.0.1 because of stucking with odin.
For the 2nd solution I need to get in recovery mode and this is not possible because of the yellow triangle.
@AndDiSa:
The thread says that it is possible to use the scanner manually in adb. Does it mean I can use it without going into recovery mode? If yes, would it be possible to explain to me how I can do it in few steps?
Thanks.

ADB is useable only in recovery mode or on a running system, unfortunately neither of those are working for you currently
Sorry, but currently I don't know what else you could try.

Try to go in recovery mode and format the whole device inside recovery. Try to use odin to flash a recovery if your device doesn't boot in to. If you're successfully then try from there to flash a kernel and a zip from stock rom.

also once u done flashing the pit i mentioned above ... flash a stock kernel first .. then flash the entire rom
@neerajganga:
I used CF-Root and Siyeh Kernel 5.0.1. and Odin stucks. The left upper corner says "Kernel" and the green barrel is full but in the message there is no complete or success info. It just freezes. When I turn my handy on I get the yellow triangle and I can't get into recovery mode. When I'm in the download mode it shows me that I have a custom binary. So I think it worked but no boot or recovery mode possible.
No success with the PIT file. I choosed re-partiton and only your PIT file but Odin stucked.
@gastonw:
I don't know it exactly. First there was the bootloop then it wanted to optimize 1 of 1 app. After wipe cache no recovery mode anymore. That's why I tried the custom roms. I just can give you the information what I see in Odin and on my phone.
How can I know that my USB drivers are not working correct. In Odin I get the yellow ID:COM with my COM port shown. I tried now a different PC and there I just installed the USB drivers. No KIES. And still the same problem with my phone.
Maybe I really have to re-partiton my phone but right now I didn't found something to try it out. Maybe you can give me some information about it.
Thanks.

[Q] Restore to stock with Kies - flash counter question

Hi
I'm currently on CM11 (nightly and TWRP) and want to revert to stock. Kies has the "Firmware upgrade and initialization" option ..
My question is:
Is it necessary to reset the flash counter in order to use this? What will happen if I try to use it without resetting the counter?
I tried to find an answer for the last few days, but couldn't (or couldn't understand what I found).
The backstory is my serial number was reset and I can't connect to network after flashing ArchiDroid with a new modem. I afterwards flashed a different (JB) modem. I was already on Samsung stock 4.3 so I guess my efs is v2 (so no Ariza's patch..), and I have some backups of it.
I'd rather not use Odin or ADB. I figured the easiest and safest way is to reset and restore everything to stock, send to a lab if necessary, then reinstall cm11. I'm also not sure how restoring the efs works ..
I'll be very thankful for any feedback, as I've been wasting a lot of time on trying to solve it recently ..
Ron
Kies sucks. Flash with Odin and no it don't matter about flash counter. Flash counter only matters when sending back to samsung service.

That solved it. Unfortunately my phone would not connect to the cellular network stating "service is not available". Good thing I have a backup phone (in which the same SIM works ...)
Personally I don't think Kies is that back, but Samsung's mobile-related software (Android, apps, etc.) is truly bad. Kies was mainly useless when it was relevant ..
Once you come to XDA you should learn the best ways of doing things. Odin is a very good tool. Kies should be deleted once you come here and understand what odin can do. I didn't like odin at the start but have grown to have respect for its uses. Saved my s3 a few times

Help me! Upgrade stock rom via Odin failed!

i've just flash rom 4.3 for I9300 via odin but my phone is SHW-M440S. Odin showed red "fail" and the progress in s3 was about 10% and i unplugged the usb cable. When i turn on my s3 again, it said that upgrade... and i can only go to download mode. I'm downloading SHW-M440S rom and gotta install it again. May it work? I'm too scared now :crying:
Flash the firmware via odin and it will work for sure. Be sure to perform a factory reset after flashing. This happens for various reasons. No need to panic.
i've flash it again, odin fail and s3 even didnt show the progress

I just dont know i could thank you. It worked. Thank for encouraged me :crying: I'm really really crying
But i still want to ask you: why i install new rom but my phone isnt different from its before? My apps and data still there
Fails occur due to various reasons some of them are loose usb connections, drivers problem, Samsung kies running in the background etc., So the stock firmware would definitely recover the phone. And the main point of your mistake is, you flashed the wrong firmware. Glad that your phone isn't hard bricked! The shops won't get deleted most of the times but it's better to backup your data and factory reset the phone from recovery mode for a fresh installation.
