[Q] Help, Sprint Samsung S2 failed Jellybean update, at wit's end - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a US SPH-D710 Sprint Samsung S2.that was working OK on ICS 4.0.4. I decided to upgrade to JB via Kies, following the procedure discussed at the official Samsung page on us on support at SupportOwnersFAQPopup.do?faq_id=FAQ00052384&fm_seq=60310 (sorry, I cannot post links)
I had to install Kies, which was not previously installed. It installed OK. Everything started out well and the phone went to 98% or 99% and then the flash failed. Power cycling, the phone came up with a complaint
Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again.
I did recovery mode, to the same effect. I then tried the Simple Upgrade tool, to the same effect. It always got to about 98% or 99% and then failed, giving no information, just a failure..
I uninstalled my anti-virus completely (as it was old anyway and it's time to buy a new license) and tried again. Same thing. The simple downloader fails with "Error Occurred! Cancel Download!!"
Then, I went to QBKing and followed a link from qbking77's web page at how-to-root/root-the-samsung-epic-4g-touch/ to a thread at sxtpdevelopers where I downloaded SPH-D710_GB27_1014481_Rooted_Restore.exe and it fails without giving any reason at "hidden"

No complaint at all, just the above. I have tried multiple times with different USB ports and different USB cables. I have successfully flashed/rooted/Odin'd other Samsung phones from this PC before. It's 64-bit Win7. This specific phone has never previously been rooted or flashed. It was on FL24.
The phone goes into download mode just fine, but is otherwise useless. In download mode, the phone says:
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME: SPH-D710
CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD: NO
CURRENT BINARY: SAMSUNG OFFICIAL
What can I do to bring this phone back to life?

I got it working
I went into my office and, using a computer appropriate for this use there, followed exactly the same steps with the same file, for the simple download tool this time, and using a third micro-USB cable, and it worked on the first try. Go figure. This was after trying various different things for about six hours at home, on my Win7 laptop that has worked many times before for other Samsung phones (an Epic 4G and an S4).

I think that the problem was that you didn't installed the correct drivers on your windows 7 laptop :fingers-crossed:
Or the file was corrupted, and when you downloaded it in your office, the download of the stock rom was succes full

Definitely could have been any of those. I was just confused as I'd successfully used Odin on that laptop with several other Samsung phones, both newer and older than the S2. And also because it always got to 98% or 99% before it failed. I think this tells me I need another Win 7 box at home, for troubleshooting this kind of problem.

I didn't realize that the Sprint version of this phone was so different from the non-Sprint version (nor that this forum was for the non-Sprint version). I found the forum you referenced, and will direct all future questions for this phone over there. Thanks for the pointer.

Ok,I think theres maybe 20 odd different ones.Someone could think youve a standard s2 and give wrong info based on that.

[Q] Stuck at bootloader after installing official update - flashing fails

Hey guys
I got the notification that a new update is available for my stock GT-I9300 (Vodafone New Zealand) a few days ago. When I clicked on install it complained because I was on mobile data and so I decided to wait until I am at home. But when I got within range of a wifi it must have automatically downloaded and installed the update, because the next time I pulled the device out of my pocket it was stuck at the initial boot screen.
I have since tried to do a firmware recovery through Kies, which downloaded the firmware and then failed to install it saying that it does not know the device or something along those lines (I unfortunately did not save a screenshot of the exact message). Then I tried Odin, which simply fails with the log output below. I know that this is a ROM for the UK, but I haven't found a ROM for NZ yet and thought that it might work anyway.
The status printed when I go into the recovery mode is a bit strange:
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME:
CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD: No
CURRENT BINARY: Samsung Official
SYSTEM STATUS: Custom
Why is there no product name and why is the system status "custom"? I have only had the phone for three weeks and I have not rooted or flashed it yet.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated

I am trying to install the original firmware through Odin, but I always get the error message shown at the end of my original post. When I try it a second time directly after it failed, then it does not complain about the PIT but instead fails to connect to the COM port:

I have gone through the process of taking out the battery, reinserting it, going into download mode, connecting it to all USB ports on my laptop and trying to flash several times now, always with the same result
I am currently downloading another ROM (I9300XXALF6_I9300ITVALF1_ITV). Maybe that'll work...?

Doesn't look like your computer found your phone, remove/reinstall the USB drivers. You can use KIES, click troubleshoot connection, it will reinstall them.
Hope that helps,

Odin says "<ID:0/011> Added!!" (or some other port of course) whenever I connect the phone, doesn't that mean that it detected the phone?
I actually did the troubleshoot connection in Kies yesterday and it reinstalled the driver. I have since removed Kies (not the driver) from my computer, as I thought that this might be the reason why Odin fails.
Ok I am getting really desperate, I have spent a large part of the weekend trying to get this to work and still no luck. Any further suggestions would be highly appreciated
I have re-installed the USB driver a few times now and Kies is not installed to make sure that there are no conflicts between ODIN/Kies. I have also found a ROM for Vodafone NZ (I9300XXALE8_I9300VNZALE4_VNZ) which is where I got the phone.
ODIN detects when I plug the phone into my computer, but fails with the following:
<ID:0/011> Get PIT for mapping..
<ID:0/011>
<ID:0/011> There is no PIT partition.
<ID:0/011> Added!!

What is the cause for this error and do I need a PIT file and do a re-partition to fix it?
Is it normal that when in download mode, the product name shown on the phone screen is empty?
Thanks!
Your partition table is corrupted. No point trying to fix.
Quickly send to samsung to reflash your phone.
So there is no way I can fix this myself (without risking to make things worse)?
I am not a happy Samsung customer right now, all this time wasted because I installed an official over the air update and who knows how long it'll take to get it fixed...
Thanks for your replies.

You are in a position now where further repairs by yourself are even more likely to end up with no warranty .
Phone broke during official update return under warranty .
Flashing other firmwares risks invalidating warranty .

[Q] Odin Fails When Converting M250S to i9100

I've been trying to convert the firmware on my M250S to I9100. I've followed the guide to the letter and all the drivers are installed as well as Kries. I also made sure Kries was inactive while Odin was up. This is how far I get before it fails.

If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate it. I've tried everything I can think of including using different firmwares, pits, as well as versions of Odin. That's as far as I get before it fails.
How are you trying to do it? As I recall (I don't have an M250 so didn't pay crazy attention) there's two ways to convert one to an i9100. One involves Odin failing intentionally. Although, the method involving a pit file doesn't intentionally fail. If you're flashing pits and they're failing that's definitely not good... Potential brick.
Search for a guide in the s2 general section, I read one a couple weeks back which members were using with success.
You can also click the link in my signature and follow the steps there. As you're not doing a 'regular' Odin flash bear in mind some things will be a little different.

I actually was following this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30976988&postcount=1182
I swapped usb cables and it got to nand write this time before it failed. Now my phone stays in page that says upgrade with a samsungmobile.com link. I can still get into download mode.
Edit: I tried another computer and it worked flawlessly. So now I'm running on i9100. Although I'm having a few issues. It doesn't show my battery charging when the usb is plugged in. Also when I shut down my phone it doesn't completely shut down. It goes to a screen with a green battery. This actually happened before but I thought perhaps changing firmware would fix it. Before this the device would come back on automatically when I tried to shut it down and I read it could be the usb port so I cleaned the usb port with alcohol.

Ah so it may not be a case of what you're trying to do, it might be a case of how the flash is set up/what hardware (pc, cable etc) you're using. In that case, use the link in my signature to troubleshoot it. Perseverance is key. Also have a look here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=45131292
It might be because of bad rom , try with another one [You can check my guide here , I provide 100% working stock rom.]

No it's working now and I flashed the firmware successfully. My main problems now are now my s2 won't charge through the usb anymore and when I shut down the phone, instead of shutting down, it brings up the green battery screen with the little white dots below it.

[Q] AT&T Galaxy Note 1 SGH-i717 Unbrick Help with Odin

How it started:
A pop message appears asking to format the phone, I accidentally hit okay, after 10 seconds I realized it, I immediately stopped the process by hitting the back button which caused my phone to go blank screen and freeze. so I pressed and hold power button, and the phone shuts off turns back on then it get stuck on the Samsung Logo/screen and won't go through no matter how long I wait.
So with that said I may have corrupted my Operating System so I went online to try to look for solutions to recover my Note.
i have downloaded Odin v1.85 and v3.07
i have downloaded the latest OS Jellybean from samsung:

first box says "MODEM"
is this normal?
i saw a vid on youtube shows "SYSTEM"
I have read your guide and installed the latest samsung USB driver
I rebooted my computer opened ODIN as admin
followed instructions and i am back to my original post
i think it has something to do with the fact mine shows "MODEM"
this is what i'm talking about.
the difference is on this pic it shows "SYSTEM"
while mine says "MODEM"
does that mean my phone can no longer be recovered?
Am I missing something here? seems like I have a more technical issue/problem other than common Odin problems.
any help would be appreciated.

Are you using the same .tar everytime?
Try another package and see what happens.
Or... just flash a twrp.tar and just flash a custom Rom on that thing.

as long as you can still get into download mode and have odin recognize you, you are in good shape. Dont do something to put yourself in qualcomm download mode. Else, you will be sending your phone to be jtagged. . .
In my guide it mentioned trying different cables and cleaning the usb port.

Galaxy Note II Won't Boot

Hello,
Newbie here... I have followed this forum for three days trying to get my Note II Verizon to boot any ROM. I am only able to get it into Odin Download mode (never been able to get the System Restore Menu). Not sure what this device was originally flashed with but I can't get any bootrom to install.

Phone now gives the following message: "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again"
The only successful Rom I have partial success with is: KIES_HOME_I605VRAMC3_I605VZWAMC3_1098177_REV04_user_low_ship.tar.
Odin 3.185 will install this ROM successfully with the PIT. Not the phone will not boot and flashes the Galaxy Note II then turns off. It will only allow me to go back into Bootloader Mode but has never allowed me to get into recovery and wipe the phone. Boot Load screen shows everything stock except the "SYSTEM STATUS: Custom". Since I do not know what ROM was originally installed I am stuck on this one and insight would greatly appreciated. I have also tried other Odin versions including 3.07.
Thank you!

I have tried the first steps and download the files poseted on this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2043636 and get the folllowing failure:

Phone now gives the following message: "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again"
The only successful Rom I have partial success with is: KIES_HOME_I605VRAMC3_I605VZWAMC3_1098177_REV04_user_low_ship.tar.
Odin 185 will install this rom successfully with the PIT.
Thank you!

Think your version of Odin is too old. try this

See if 307 works better for you.

Thank you for the reply. I made a typo and have tried Odin 3.185 and 3.07. Can't seem to get any of them to work. I have contacted Samsung and my phone is under warranty but would like to get the "CUSTOM" off the SYSTEM STATUS to avoid issues with the warranty.

Hello,
Can can anyone share what the Out of Warranty costs are if the Verizon Note II is sent in with a Custom Rom and Samsung doesn't honor the warranty?

You will be charged the full price of the device. Just keep trying to fix the issue. There has to be something you aren't doing right. As long as you can get into the boot loader you are in okay shape. Just go back through the instructions and follow them as closely as you possibly can.

In my experience no matter how far gone you think your device is, if you can get into download mode and Odin recognizes it you are OK. I am sure there are circumstances where you can't recover even if you are in that position, but I have never heard of any. Agree with miketoasty, read the instructions carefully and then read them again. Be sure you have the correct files and a decently charged battery. And make sure your USB cable is good.

I have been in the IT business for nearly 25 years and have seen many problems resolved if you have the time and desire to put forth the efforts to investigate the problem every day with a clear head. With that being said I for some unknown ADD moment and decided I wanted to troubleshoot my sons girlfriend's Note II that was having problems. Now here I am wrestling with a problem like a drug addict looking for their "next fix". I am very stubborn and extremely capable of diagnosing hardware and software problems but this one truly has me stumped!
With this being a problem I decided to purchase another Note II off EBay to experiment with and was listed with similar problems, Red Light and wouldn't boot.. I figured for $125 the worst that could happen is I could disassemble it and part out the LCD/Digitizer and recuperate my investment. There are some problems I like researching and resolving and this is one. I personally believe the problems on both Note II's may both related to the charging board based on the information on the following post on another forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=45678812#post45678812. I will elaborate a little more shortly.
Let's go over my three day 50 hour marathon. Here is the only download that successfully downloads but the phone will only splash the "GALAXY NOTE II" screen and turn off after a successful install. I have downloaded Odin 3.185 and 3.07 and get the same results:
sch-i605-16gb.pit
KIES_HOME_I605VRAMC3_I605VZWAMC3_1098177_REV04_user_low_ship.tar.md5
Unless the problem resides on my laptop I think I have eliminated the issue of having a good cable(s) by using official Samsung cables, NEW RocketFish cables and they all seem to work fine for viewing and transferring files via USB. I also have an external battery charger and can guarantee an excellent charge on the battery(s). The current files I was recommended to use came from a single Zipped file: GalaxyNote2UnlockVerizon. Please let me know if there are a different set of files I should be using?
Unless I have downloaded the wrong files? I have attempted to install the following bootloader with Odin versions 3.07, 3.13 and 3.185 and they all fail: BootloaderBaseline2.tar.md5. All I know at this moment i am stuck at a point that I have the Note II in a state that will not allow me to boot.
Lets discuss some hardware issues that I need to explore a little further. Since I have a spare phone to test with I thought I would swap logic/motherboards and see if I had any different results. Unfortunately they are exactly the same on both Note II's. Now comes an interesting issue I stumbled upon. When I VERY CAREFULLY reassembled it on an ESD Mat I somehow dislodged or did not securely fasten the display cable to the logic board and when the power was pressed the phone seemed to start booting but there was no display. The sound and the blue light came on normally. I had hoped the original ROM was now installing. I powered off the phone, removed the battery and disassembled it to discover my mishap, so I reconnected the display cable and reassembled the phone only to see the original problem was still present.
Has anyone else had a charging port issue that caused similar problems? I was planning on ordering a new charging port off Amazon today just to try. Any additional information would be greatly appreciated.
Thank all of you that contribute to this site. It is amazing how many problems can be resolved when great minds are put together.
The red light and wont boot indicates a hard brick...more then likely the device had something flashed to it that corrupted the emmc. Moral of the story...its now a paper weight.

It doesn't have a red light. I can get it into the download mode and it will allow the ROM update through Odin but it will only splash the "GALAXY NOTE II" screen and power off.

look for a n7100 tar, or maybe "I think, can't remember" there was a stock tar in the I605 mega roll thread somewhere. flash one of them. Try not to use the kies tar as i've had problems with them being corrupted before. Know you've tried both the methods already. Just a suggestion in case you have not. Also check and make sure you have the right pda file.

Bricked Verizon SCH-i545 5.01 OC1

Hello,
I have a Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4 which came stock running 5.0.1 lollipop. I managed to root the phone with KingRoot and flashed a custom rom with FlashFire with no issues at all. My main goal was to get Xposed Framework installed. I was able to flash the Xposed sdk-21 arm file with FlashFire and it seemed to install properly but I couldn't ever get the Xposed app to install properly afterwards. So I then decided to uninstall the Xposed sdk-21 arm with a Xposed uninstaller file from the same source which had to be flashed and that's when all the trouble began.
My phone rebooted and got stuck at the Samsung splash screen. I had tried rebooting several times. Firstly I went into stock recovery and tried wiping cache partition to no avail. Secondly I tried to do a factory restore via stock recovery and that was a no go. Still stuck at Samsung splash screen upon boot up attempt. I then decided it was probable best if I had just started from scratch. So I downloaded the stock I545VRUGOC1 rom along with the Pit file and tried flashing that with Odin v3.09. That was a huge fail. Odin went through the process all the way to about 90-95% and wouldn't go any further. I had to keep pressing start after many failed attempts to get to that point.
Here's what I get from Odin now:

I can no longer get into stock recovery on the phone at this point. I get this message when trying to enter recovery:
Software Update Failed
Your device didn't update
successfully. Use the Verizon
Software Repair Assistant on a
computer to repair your device and
complete the update.
I CAN get into download mode at the very least. Maybe there's still hope? I'm about cross-eyed and at wits ends trying to find a working solution. Any and all help is much appreciated.
Thanks
Okay, so I came across a Brick Fix .tar (boot disc image) file that I was able to flash successfully with Odin 3.09. I can now get back into system recovery. I still cannot get the phone to boot normally. It only goes to the Samsung Galaxy S4 splash screen. I'm currently trying to figure out if I am able to do an ADB sideload.
Can anyone point me in the right direction to the proper adb files or programs?
First, redownload it, unless you confirmed the md5s...
Second, try different USB ports.
Third, a different USB cable... Some work, some don't...
The OEM samsung cable works best, but I know for sure my monoprice cable for 2 bucks works nicely... Odin is reaaalllly picky..
Really, if it fails, those are the three major things 99% of people have problems with.

Holy wow! First off I just want to say thanks to you for chiming in! Apparently Odin didn't like the stock cable that came with the phone. I used my old Motorola Droid Bionic usb cable, switched usb ports, and flashed the stock 5.0.1 rom with Odin v1.85. The best I could do with Odin v3.09 was about 75% complete before it failed. I've been working on this literally all day (off work today) google search after google search . Thank you so much! :good:
Btw I flashed the stock rom I found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-verizon/development/odin-5-0-1-lollipop-oc1-t3174850
Huh. Odin prefers the OEM cord, but whatever works works.
I don't know what it is but I also used my droid bionic cable to charge my galaxy s3 because it works a heck of a lot better than the stock cable. I bought my galaxy s4 from ebay as a manufacturer refurbished phone so that my have something to do with the cable provided. My phone is black but it came with all white oem accessories. I ordered my galaxy s3 from ebay brand new a few years back and it is black and came with a black oem charger. Not sure if any of that makes a difference or not but they are Samsung brand cables. I think Motorola may have better charger/data cables imo.
