Everything is good but I still have a few questions - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 3

So I am loving the note! What a beast of a phone. The only down side is I feel like a lot of accessory are not out yet. I did get it rooted but I have a few questions still.
1. its rooted and keeps telling me I need to update. I turned the setting off for checking for updates but its really annoying to keep getting this pop up. Is there a way to stop the phone from telling me this?
2. Now that I am rooted is there a way to install the new updates with out loosing root or tripping knox?
3. Since im rooted is there a way to get google wallet working?
4. How in the world did I put up with the evo lte so long?

Anybody? This notification is so annoying!

You may want to see if someone has a deoxidezed stock rom or switch to a AOSP rom. AOSP don't have update notifications. The uploaded stock based roms usually have it the notification removed or disabled.

Not really. Doing any OTA updates always runs the risks of loosing root. You can try using something like Voodoo Root Keeper, but not guaranteed to work. SuperSuperUser has some functionaltiy to try to save root. I think TWRP may it as well. Like the rest or the root keeping tools, none of it is guaranteed to work. In my experience though, they have saved my rear a couple times, on a different phone.
Best policy, just wait a day or two for someone to upload the updated stock rom that has root. Plus, in that time, you'll find out if the update is FUBAR'd or breaks any of your favorite apps.

I'm the "Ditto" and the "And how", not the OP, but I share his pain.

I wasn't trying to imply you didn't know better. I was more answering how the OP possiblely was ignorance about the Note 3, although not the greatest answer.
I'm still on the Note 2. But going from the Evo 4G to Note 2 was a new world open up to me. That may be par for the course when you go from a two year or more old phone to a new flagship. Not that aren't differences now, the hassle or breaking my contract and costs for benefits of upgrading didn't seem worth it. Plus, maybe, if I'm luckly, the Note 4 will be a 6" screen and have the triband to take advantage of Sprint's Spark's network compatibles.
That said, it's can be challeng keeping up with all the new tech on phones. And with that, there is always something better around the corner. I just know I was elided when Sprint got the Note II since I wanted the original Note and the first Dell Streak (5" smartphone). I've bought into the Kool Aid called the phablets and don't see me going anywhere.

No worries. Just sayin I didn't know what a horrible phone I had. Now I do. The N3 really nailed the WOW factor.

I don't understand what everyone's big problem is . You don't want the update notice than update. 2 step process
1] odin the official mj4 file
Can be found at sammobile.com
2] root it via kingoapp
Done

What @cherylbaker said is correct, you will need to Odin the Stock MJ4 and then go through your root method again.

I didn't have the horrible previous phone. My situation, I knew my phone had just become dated. I was running three different roms through boot manager, which I needed to switch roms depending on what I needing to do. I have feeling I may not be quite as bad with the Note 2 in a year, but I think it'll be showing it's age by then.
But going to the Note 2, I had the same feeling. It was a breathe of fresh air. Like the tech heavens had reopened. I'm just hoping there is nice leap in hardware from the Note 2 to Note 4. I see the it more it just being a minor upgrade to the Note 3. Kind of like what Apple was doing with iPhone and the S variants.

Thanks guys! I did get it rooted with root-de-la-vega and I am knox 0x0. I also got the notification to go away by freezing the "update service" with TB. Im not sure I want to update at all now, this is seriously the most solid phone I have had in a long time and it works flawlessly the way it is. I cant see any reason to update at all. to be honest im not sure how to tell what version im on now with a Samsung phone lol.
As for the evo, I was not a bad phone, it was pretty good at the time, it is not note close to the excrescence this phone gives you! I will say HTC does make a better "feeling" phone, but I could care less! I want it to run like a beast!!!!!! Plus I put all my phones in cases on day one so what it feels like only matters for a few minutes lol .

Glad you're set. I really hated my Evo, but I had the original Evo also, and Evo 2 couldn't compare so it left me grumbling. Very true about the feel. The Evo feels more substantial to me, but like you I'd rather have the beast (case goes on all my devices day one, too). :good:
Enjoy!

[Q] Unlocked Bootloader! Flashing poll

The bootloader is officially unlocked and CWM is available for Recovery. Also looks like CM9 is under beta testing on the prime and we should see it coming within a matter of days..This is where the real fun begins.
So who's gonna flash their Primes once this kicks into higher gear as high gears are rotating already!?
As soon as I figure out why CM9 is so amazing I'll probably jump on it. I don't know much about CM since the last unlocked phone I owned was the OG Droid and I don't remember which roms I use to install since it use to get changed every week. But im excited to see the development with this.
i'm going to wait with flashing untill there are some good roms!
The Prime is running a fairly stock version of Android and that is all I ever want out of my Android devices. I have used CM in the past (CM7 on my EVO) and while I enjoyed it quite a bit, in a lot of cases there were just too many options.
I know that sounds silly, but honestly a lot of the settings were confusing, either in placement, because settings in one area over-rode settings in another without warning, or because the settings just weren't explained well.
CM9 (or any other ROM) would have to be completely amazing, and that includes all of the Prime's hardware 100% working in order for me to consider going through the bother of unlocking the bootloader on my tablet and flashing a new ROM.
I will definitely be flashing, just for the prospect of having Ubuntu proper up and running.
Root!!! Unlock!!! Fun!!!

I had my prime since the beginning of January so i cant return it to the store. I dont have any dead pixels or light bleed. Gps doesnt really work but i havent tried since i flashed to ics. If something was gonna warrant me to return my prime it probably would of happened already. i am itching to get off work so i can unlock and throw on cwm recovery. and just wait for the roms to start coming in.

I did and it's working perfectly so far
I posted some benchmarks on the ROM Thread, it's pretty fast and the OC is nice and easy.
Yeah..im unlocking the bootloader now...literally about to click ok on the EULA agreement.. have you had any issues at all?? have you tested GPS, WIFI, and battery drain and compared it to stock? I'd like to know, thanks.
We will see what we will see when we see it (and not before)
It will eed to be a VERY enticing ROM to make me willing to throw away 10 months of warranty coverage on a device that, let's face it, has has it share of issues. (and then some!)
Frustrating is what it will be for some. Agonizing for others. Then there are those that say screw it, you only live once! What a shame if your bricked your Prime flashing a ROM, only minutes after blowing away your ability to replace or repair it under warranty.
Maannn...im slowly joining the "im considering it" group as I just cant force myself to push the ok button on that EULA agreement for unlocking. ..too much money to just theoretically toss in the trash when i got bills to pay...too many "what if's" honestly Ive had the Prime since early January and ive had no problems with Wifi, bluetooth but GPS is completely non functional..theres some dead pixels in the middle and 3 bright dots on the right side looking like a constellation...I notice them and yeah it did bother that they were there once I saw them but thats not enough a reason to return to ASUS for me personally as everything else works like a miracle..but the what if somthing happens a couple months down the road and im stuck with a dead tablet will make Drew a dull boy. ..thats whats itching my neck and pulling a $500 pay out for another tablet is not going to happen unless its some crazy Tron or Ironman 2 device that has 3d holograms and what have you..i'll give it another couple minutes before i make my final decision..im at work anyways so i'll go ship a PC out and come back hopefully with my final decision..=P
Alright... ima do it! FTW!!!

You sir, reflect the spirit of the old west in modern times. Sure, you could stay back east, where it safe as houses, and nothing incredible ever happens, but not you. The wild and wonderful world west of the "unlocked" river holds promise.
I hope you don't end up like the skeleton in "Dances with Wolves"; when they come across it,the guy says: "His folks back east keep asking "Why don't he write?"
Good luck, and I hope you find a ROM to call your own.
"Oh give me a ROM where the buffalo roam, and the deer and the antelope can be found with GPS"...

Pic messages?

So has anyone used the GingerbreadPhone7 ROM? here is the link just incase http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=17868583, anyways i was wondering if anyone knows a way to receive picture messages with this ROM and also if anyone knows if this ROM functions great? Or does it also have delayed SMS because I think it is based on CM7 but I'm not sure

it runs well and is not based on cm7 . i know that at least. picture messages should work, but i havent tested that before.
ill add that i am also getting tired of the bugginess of cm9 and cm10. i want my phone to just work. and half of the time it barely does. i am starting to think that the "benefits" of 4.0 are not worth all of the hassle i have to go through to run it.

theres a few still. but not many. most people are still using cm10 with its 100s of flaws. i have gotten to the point where that is just too frustrating for me any more. i used cm9 for about the past 4 months, longest run with a rom. recently though, all of the glitchiness just has me fed up. sometimes i pull down my notifications and they just arent there. other times my phone reboots itself during a phone call, comes back on and somehow it is still connected to the call. im just really tired of it doing things that i have "learned to live with" or things i dont understand. ill mess around with gingerbreadphone7 a bit this afternoon and see what the deal is.
lets keep our fingers crossed that nitro gets a dx2 and releases more updates for eclipse.
in the mean time i would give PMing peppermint (gp7 OP) a shot.

i just checked and i have until july 9th. so a month and a week. :victory: thank god. what phone are you thinking about getting?
i am leaning towards the razr m , mainly because the DNA doesnt have an sd card slot??! and the s3 is quite a huge phone. i know that a new wave of phones are around the corner, but i also dont really have hundreds of dollars to drop on a new device. so in short, i am for sure staying android. i cant handle the size of the s3. and there arent really many other options....lol
ill just add that if 16g of space is more than enough for you(my music collection squashes that immediately) , then the DNA is for sure the way to go. the specs on it are amazing.

i did try it that afternoon. i was able to get 1 out of 6 picture messages actually sent. very strange. i am actually still running it now, as i am too lazy to switch back to eclipse or sbf at this point, with my upgrade so close. the rom has been abandoned for quite a while now though. although it does look nice .
glad to hear that the s3 seems nice. ! if you are due for an upgrade, it is only 50 bucks on amazon. same price you were gonna pay for the palm... check it out! i want the s4, but i dont have 150-200 dollars to toss at a new phone, and the s3 is not all that different anway. in some ways i like it better.

To root or not to root

After my last bad experience with Xperia zl and after reading how other people have experienced issues after rooting their note 3 I was wondering if rooting has any adverse effects on the phones functionality. What are cons of rooting?
There's bit of lag on note 3 which is really annoying for such a beast.
Any advice would be much appreciated thanks

root it, that is all.
Forget what everyone says about problems, Even if you were to brick this thing it can be restored to stock through odin. I have been screwing with this thing since it came out and my team has done quite a bit to it. Ones even working on a full rom atm.
Just do it!

If you use the CF-AutoRoot method and follow the directions step by step (perhaps also remove SIM-Card and SD-Card before setting the phone in download mode and running Odin) then you should have a flawless experience, it took me less than 10 minutes out of the box and I was rooted and ready to go.
Chainfire and QbKing77 have put together comprehensive guides on rooting the Note 3 for just about every provider. Just make sure you choose the correct .tar file for your phone model.
Root your device at your own risk. Using this root method sets current binary and system status to custom. Additionally, it will also trigger the KNOX warranty void status. The KNOX warranty status change is permanent, and a service center may deny warranty based on this flag – even if the other flags are reset correctly. The KNOX flag being tripped may also prevent certain Samsung KNOX features from working (enterprise security features).
If you're worried about the losing your warranty, wait for a KNOX workaround, or a potential TriangleAway update.

Not sure if you're referring to my suggestion. The reason I recommend removing the SD-Card and SIM-Card is to prevent the chance of ODIN wiping any data from them. An old habit but prevention is the best solution. Bricks are no fun.
Also remember that restoring does not work with the note 3 yet so nandoids don't work and if u do a restore, u will not be able to Odin back to stock from what I've read. I will wait until all the kinks are worked out

If you bought the phone retail you should have 14 days to return the phone. The Black Note 3 that I picked up from Best Buy on Friday was an upgrade from Sprint. I tooled around with it, rooted and installed a customer recovery on Saturday and tried to install a ROM yesterday. Things went awry and I ended up with a brick Black Note 3 and rather then waste time trying to unbrick it I returned it to BestBuy this morning and exchanged it for the white model.
Some might argue that it's not cool to do that because the phone will be relegated to pre owned status and Sprint/Samsung will have to write of the depreciated value of a two day old as a loss.
I don't care though because I signed a 2 year contract with Sprint and they'll screwing me for a lot more and for a much longer them then I could have ever screwed them.

What does this have to do with the original question asked... Also if your to lazy to unbrick this phone which is only about 10 clicks and 10 minutes long then that's not very impressive to me. A lot of respect is lost in this post.. I may not agree with sprints prices but still that's not cool

It has a lot to do with the original question. The question was whether or not to root and the answer mitigated the danger of having a root gone bad. It had nothing to do with being Lazy. I wasn't able to fix the phone in 10 clicks or 1,000 clicks and I spent much more than 10 minutes trying. After trying to flash the firmware didn't work I began to run out of idea's but it didn't stop me from trying. It's a new device and I wasn't able to locate many resources to help my guess it they haven't been created yet.
I said it's not something I normally do but I justified it because of the 10 years of repressed anger I have towards Sprint. I'm still annoyed at having to pay a monthly surcharge for having a smartphone beginning in 2010 with the HTC EVO 4G. And despite Sprints marketing the phone as 4G I never got 4G with that phone. Then there was the mismanaged OTA ICS update from Sprint. I could make a list of things to complain about to Sprint but there is no recourse after you sign the contract because you have no leverage.

Switched to the SGS3

So I decided enough was enough with all of the glitches and battery life issues on my Rezound and so I got the Galaxy S3. Personally? This phone is a beast and the features are a hit or miss. 1 or 2 seem gimmicky but the rest I find myself using on a consistent basis. I am falling in love with this phone. Simply put... if you want a cheap/free upgrade but some bang for your buck, go witb the S3. Or S4 if money is of no consequence. This might be my first Samsung device but it definitely won't be my last. I'm leaving HTC behind. Deuces.

Enjoy... Hope it works out for you. But in my opinion there are better choices for a very low cost, such as you could have waited til Friday and gotten a SGS4 for free at Best Buy or $99 (plus a $100 gift card back, so essentially free) at Wal-Mart with contract renewal though.
Good luck. With Knox being apparently unreversable when tripped, enjoy voiding your warranty if attempting to root. (OFC devs made a root method to not trip Knox, but all it takes in an OTA to fix that workaround). Samsung has some good features, but so does the new Sense 5 and 5.5
To each their own. At least you didn't choose crapple

How long have you had it? Verizon usually has a 30 day "buyers remorse" window to return the device.

I've had it for about 3 days now. I think I might just wait until Black Friday and see how the deals are. If I find a better Verizon-compatible phone for 99 bucks or less I'll definitely be returning the S3. Honestly, though, I just want the S4. After using the Galaxy S3 for a few days I've really come to love it. So if I replace it with any device it'll definitely be a Samsung device.
You've made a good move! I loved HTC Devices, but their hit and miss performance and lack of flasship phones when I upgraded caused me to go the GS3 route after my dinc. I had my eyes on the Rezound for a long time and my wife wound up getting one (why I'm on this forum), but after the issues she's had with it (poor battery life, not charging after complete discharge, sluggish performance when not rooted, etc) I'm glad I went a the Samsung route.
Don't worry about the flash counter if you want to root there are fast ways around that. More importantly you don't have to worry about unlocking the bootloader AND gaining S-OFF, you only need to unlock the bootloader.
If you do root your GS3, I HIGHLY recommend baking up your IMEI, check the GS3 forums there are guides everywhere for it. It might seem like a foreign language, but it is vitally important!

Thanks! I appreciate it! But I definitely notice the difference between the Rezound and the S3, particularly battery life. Rooting and unlocking the bootloader seemed very foreign to me at first but it was quick, easy, and painless. I can't tell you how happy I am to actually be able to flash whatever I want whenever I want without plugging my phone up to my computer.
Anyway, what does baking the IMEI do?
I think it was a typo, he meant backing it up. Some Samsung devices loose their IMEI when using Odin. It is a rare occurrence, but can happen

Hahaha OOPS, yeah big typo there! I indeed meant back up NOT bake up. DO NOT put your phone in the oven!!
Uzephi is correct, in short flashing on Samsung devices can cause a loss of the IMEI/ERI/MEID and consequently loss of connectivity to your cell carrier. Manually fixing it is a royal PITA and reflashing a backup (nandroid) from recovery doesn't fix it. I lost my IMEI/ERI/MEID on Saturday without a backup and finally got my GS3 back up to 100% functional last night (Tuesday). Backing up takes only minutes but can save DAYS of headache.
See this post and follow the instructions step by step. It's VERY simple.

That'd be great if any contract on my account was almost up...
Or if I didn't have grandfathered unlimited...
So yeah. Any 2 year contract deals are out of the question.

S9+ TMobile not rootable?

I've searched and just got my new S9+ coming from LG and forums here are so different in gathering info. Is this variant rootable yet? If so can someone post a link... In the mean time I'll keep searching. :silly:

Nope it's not, and will be a loooooooong time before it is.
Well? After much research I was able to disable bloatware, get YouTube ad free and some more all without root. Honestly? This phone is good enough not to root really. I usually rooted to get a kernel to speed things up and get less lag, amazingly there's no need. Also for Xposed but I also don't see the need. So waiting for something that now I feel is not needed is ok. But having the itch to root will always exist. Lol

I'm on Snapdragon directly from T-mobile in the US.
Very little bloatware installed. And what was there I was able to uninstall easily including Facebook.
This was the first device I've owned that I've been able to do this without root.

I have a question if i was to purchase a Samsiung galaxy s9+ from samsung themselves, will i be able to root the phone at that point.
I have been on iPhone for a long period of time because it is so easy to Jailbreak a phone once the program comes out, its just one click and done. I always recalled android phone goes through steps in order to be rooted, and i do mean really long steps, and the smallest mess up would brick the phone, i know now that the bricking the phone is a lot less likely. But it is still hard to root the phone..
Also back in the day, all android phones can be rooted except for Verizon Android phones. Now all carrier Samsung galaxy phones cant be or takes time to root. things have changed in the community i see.

With iphones you have to jailbreak just to get it semi-useful. My tmo s9+ had hardly anything already on it that wasn't easily removable. No need for root IMO.

Well, the main reason why I want to root is to find a bypass for the tethering. Example: On the iPhone there is a application called (Tetherme) it pretty much bypass the tethering provision so that the hotspot usage shows up as Phone usage not Hotspot usage.
I want to do that on the Samsung Galaxy s9+, I want to use the native tethering connectivity that is on the device and have it show up as phone usage not hotspot usage.
What I'm going to end up doing is selling my phone in order to purchase one directly from Samsung.
