[Q] Frustrated! - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am kind of new to the android platform. I will admit, that while I am a PC guy, as far as mobile stuff goes, so far I have been very pleased with Apple and iOS (I do jailbreak all my iOS stuff, which makes it very customizable)....
That being said, I have bought a TF700 and keyboard to try out. Its pretty nice. I am however getting very frustrated because I cannot for the life of me understand WHY android would allow someone to buy and insert an microSD card for additional storage, and then restrict the user (me) from installing apps on the external card! I have read thru dozens of posts and understand that MOST people dont see a need for putting and running apps on an SD card. I am NOT one of those people. I am admittedly somewhat of an APP "hoarder" And I really despise being restricted from being able to store and run apps from my sd card!!!
Soooo....I ask all of the more experienced android users here - Is there ANY way possible to do this on an Asus TF700?? I have read that even if you root, it is not possible!
If thats the case, I may be selling my TF700.
Thanks,
Hyestar

Anyone??

Am I the ONLY one that has an interest in putting apps on an SD card???

Just wondering why this is a deal breaker for you. Could you install apps to SD on your iPhone? Not being argumentative, but I don't see why not having this option bothers you. You can use app to SD or some such to move a lot of the app data if that will satisfy you.

Most apps aren't that big, plus there are performance issues from running on a SD card.

It "seems" like my 32GB iPad holds so much more. I dont honestly know why the perception is that it does, but for some reason, there seems to be more room on it. I agree that it i a design limitation of the iOS devices not to have a microsd card slot. (although, as in my origional question, it seems that ultimately, it is a design limitation on android as well.)
I just dont understand why android developers would restrict (it hasnt alway been this way) a user from using the sd card like a second hard drive. let me do what I want with it. run apps.
As far as there being performance issues with running an app/game from an sd card, I will point to my rooted Nook Color, that has app2sd on it, and runs (very well) apps that I have moved to the sd card.
Oh well, I guess I am in the minority of those out there that own tablets.
Thanks,
C

App2SD doesn't move the entirety of the App to the SD card. The Read/Write speed of the SD card isn't always enough to keep up with the demands of an actively running, real-time program. It's not viable.

After googling for a bit, I found that this guide is quite useful:
techgage.com/article/moving_your_non-movable_android_apps_to_an_sd_card/
You might have to get your hands a bit dirty but if you really want to have a lot of apps, I guess it might be worth it.
PS: Don't forget to say thanks if I've helped you

[Q] Viewsonic G Tablet Set-up Advice

Dear Forum...I just purchased the Viewsonic G Tablet at CompUSA and they told me to purchase anti-virus software and install it on the GTAB. I have not done this yet until I seek some answers from forum GTAB users. 1. Any recommendations on which anti-virus software to install? I was considering the FREE version of AVG? 2. Would you down load this software to the internal 16Mb memory or to the 16Mb micro SD card that I just installed? 3. Is there an APP anti-virus software that is recommended? Thank you for the feedback and helping out this new GTab forum member.
gwasson,
I don't know of many people that are running an antivirus program. I'd get everything
else in line and running and just watch for anything on AV. But so far you won't find much.
Rev
Here's my take.
CompUSA was trying to get some more money out of ya.
I wouldn't worry about an antivirus, and I cant even imagine how bad that would slow everything down and drain your battery. Not to mention would it even do any good or would it already be to late.
Even on a computer I dont run an antivirus because of the side effects. I watch what i download and dont go to smiley central. and I don't have any virus issues.
On an android device its almost just more of a gimmick than anything else. If people will install it, they'll keep making it.
Not once though have i seen or heard from anyone I know that runs an android device run into a virus issue.
Just watch what apps your installing. Look at the reviews. If there arent any, and it looks questionable, maybe steer clear of it.
You shouldnt have any issues. If you do, you shouldn't have been doing what you were doing to begin with!
I use the free AVG antivirus, works nicely, aint slowing the gtab so it was worth the try at the end.
Plus having an extra security wont harm you either, at the end even an iphone could be hacked with viruses at least jailbroken ones of course
If you really want to run one (it's not much of a vector for malware, so don't feel like you have to), you could also look up Lookout. It has some great secondary features.
For those of us running stock setups. Which device would we select at getjar.com if we wanted this or other software? XOOM is an option but much of the stuff is not available for it yet.

[Q] Upgrading primary SD card

I've been reading about upgrading the 2gb SD card that comes installed in the Streak. Apparently there are two potential benefits of this.
1) A larger card of which the extra space can be used as storage for media, etc. The problem I have with this is that it appears to involve some serious jumping through of hoops to make it work and it doesn't seem to always work. In other words, it is very easy to screw up.
2) Faster card to improve performance.
Has anyone tried this and have any feedback on whether it has had any effect on overall smoothness or stability?
I'm going to be replacing my screen soon so while I have the Streak open it would be a good time to replace it if there is anything to gain. From what I have seen so far, it doesn't seem worth the trouble, but if anyone has evidence to the contrary, please speak up.

I have posted about internal card replacement, external card replacement, screen replacement here at xda and at 2 other sites. A forum search would have found it here and a Google search would have found it elsewhere. I don't have the time to keep re-posting my posts.

When you create the title for a new thread it does an auto search. I think the title of this thread is a pretty reasonable search topic. The auto-search gave me nothing useful. Yes, I did bother to look at what it brought up. One title looked promising. I read it. It didn't help.
Besides, if you read the post, I obviously have read threads on the topic. Did you think I just created my opinion from whole cloth?
I'm looking for feedback from anyone who has good reason to think it is worth doing, because at this point I don't believe it is, but since the phone will be opened up soon, if that opinion is mistaken I would like to know about it so I won't miss out on a worthwhile hardware mod.
IF you had done a search for INTERNAL sd card you would have gotten all the answers you need.
So while I am here I will mention that in MY opinion it was well worth it, although I took the simple route and just cut a small bit of plastic that retains my internal card to replace it with the 4GB class 10.
Access to and from the card is greatly improved. What is in your Streak is a class 2 card which will read at about 8-10 MB/s and write at about 4 MB/s, on good days. Real world, knock a couple MB/s off each.
The Class 10 4GB, read speed 16-20MB/s consistent and write between 9-11MB/s, so do the math.
True, under normal conditions it may not seem as much, but I work with a lot of photos and documents out on the road with my phone. The time it took to replace the card has been saved countless times, and for me time is money.

Supposedly, you can repartition the device in store...

According to the support person I talked to in the BN chat they said I could take my device into the store and have the 1GB increased. Has anyone tried this yet?
I was at BN today, and they had no idea what i was talking about. The girl at the counter did not know that only 1gb was free for storage either :-C
I never believed there would be any realistic in-store tech support like Apple's. I dunno why B&N would make this a selling point in their launch. I have a feeling this will come back and bite them.
I'd wager that there will be an all-staff meeting in ever B&N store in the world in next few days (I've worked retail a few different places and we always had them after close on Sundays). There, the staff will be given a crash course in selling, demo-ing, restoring the Nook Tab to stock, etc.
When I first bought the NT, the sales person told me that they will have nook sessions every Tuesday for people who want to learn about using the NT. Maybe your store has something like that and a tech will be there.
when I returned mine today, the guy behind the counter was surprised and thought it was ****ty that it only had 1 GB of storage available to the user.. he said it may get adjusted as they are "always tweaking these things".. the only "tweak" I'd want to see is an unlocked bootloader
I just came back from B&N and the tech there said they will reverse the partition of the space for you. He didn't know if his current sd card will do it as they haven't done it in a while but told me that he will let the other techs know and will have it ready for other customers later on in the week. There are techs at my store apparently M-F. He was very knowledgeble and knew about xda and that the kindle fire has already been rooted. Maybe other devs could check out their stores and talk with their techs about an easier way to root, get a copy of their sd card
I asked a tech support phone guy about a possible repartition and he seemed completely bewildered. I'll have to try my local store, but I'll give it a few more days for them to figure stuff out.
With all the sideloading possibilities, I can live without root for a while, but I would really love to recover that wasted 12GB of space.

Go in Ninja-Stealth mode and copy that damn SD card for us!!!
Seriously, if anyone go for repartitioning, please try to follow all the procedure, like if they just use a SD card, or they connect the NT to a computer (and HOW). This will be really important. Thanks.

When I asked the tech on how to recover the space B&N dedicated to just B&N stuff, he just straight up pulled out his sd card and told me that he hasn't done it in a while (since the nook color) and that he may not have the necessary tools on it right now. I was exchanging my NT so I didn't want the repartition right away anyways. He told me that he expects the space dedicated just for B&N stuff (11GB or so) can be repartitioned back so that we can use all 12GB. He referenced they did the same to the Nook Color but I have no idea if that is true.
We have to remember that some of the "tech" is more knowledgeable than others, and most of them are very helpful in answering anything about the UI, and not so about hardware aspect of things.
Give the NT some time, let them work out some issues. I'd love to be the fly on the wall in some of their staff meetings...
So, what's the word? Is it their policy? Do they have tools that can do this?

Ask noob(newb) questions here.

I've noticed there's alot of new people here. I figured I'd give you guys a place to ask questions that might be common knowledge to the more experienced people here.
So ask away.....
There is just 1GB on the NT for users to contain their own data, right? So, if I got a microSD, can I expand my own data storage?
And after rooted, can I install the apk or download games/apps on the Android market?
P/S: Sorry, my English it not good.
i'm also a new guy. but i can help answer some simple questions to reduce senior guys' work load. if not correct, please point out.
to tritrung's questions, here's my answer:
default 1G data's usage just like TF card, you can store your files on TF card and the 1G internal storage, and it will be 2 folders, not one.
12G storage is used to install apks, which almost no limit for applications.
even if you don't rooted, you can install most programs, but if you want use google market, you need to root the device

By the way, have you used the Nook Tablet? Is its touchscreen sensitive?
The screen is quite responsive...much better than the nook color.
Advice for micro SDHC cards for Nook Color hold the same for Nook Tablet?
I have been doing research on what Micro SDHC cards are best for the NT. From the XDA forum for Nook color, the best cards going are those that are class 4 from San Disk that are 16GB in memory due to the read/write speeds for smalls block random files. (Nook color benefits tremendously from this when custom ROMs are loaded I believe). Link is here for above info:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1005633&highlight=learn+to+love+cm7
With the hardware upgrade for the NT, does the above still hold true? Or can I now start searching for higher class micro SDHC cards (class 6 or even 10)? Planning on getting my NT in the next couple of weeks.
Thanks for your help. It is much appreciated. These XDA forums are great for finding great answers/solutions to problems. Keep up the excellent work.
Regards, Eric in San Diego, CA
Yes pretty much everything in that thread still applies and is pretty sound advice. In general the higher the class the better. I have a class 10 16gb in mine. For just stuff like playing music any class is fine. When you start to get into advanced things like booting roms from sd or apps2sd is where class really starts to matter. One of the important things to remember is the class rating is the minimum speed that model should write. Like with my Sandisk 32gb class 4 alot of people were reporting write speeds around 6-8mbs/sec. Another example is the Sandisk in the thread you linked. Those are around $35 on Bens outlet or I heard newegg has them too. Good luck!
Where do files download to by default? Ive tried to download some pictures and other files via the web browser. The notification area on thr bottom says the files have been downloaded but it wont open them. For instance, with an apk I downloaded from this forum when i click to open it it says "cannot open file".

OK. Lots of newer users here so let me touch on a few things that should well translate from the NC.
1. uSD classes: seems to matter little when using apps. Seldom are the speeds accurate anyway. Use reputable brands. Sandisc one of the best.
2. Never format uSD in your device. Always on your computer. Don't use Windows format. Often creates problems. Use this. Free and never failed me.
3. Root is optional for the NT right now. Certain apps require root access BUT untill a workable recovery scheme is devised I would recommend sideloading. Always unmount before removing. Yes, OTA will work and GApps will update.
4. I've not seen yet a reliable method of re-partitioning the eMMC for the NT (might have missed it if so) therefore sideloading would appear a workable plan for now.
5. If the hurdles can be overcome (and it is early yet, people) to achieve root + recovery many options will open but the NT appears pretty darn good as it is. Patience is a plus.
6. Search function and Google search is your friend. Xda is phenomenal but there are many other forums and many senior members post/read to several.
7. Research what you want to do before doing it. God knows I learned that the hard way myself!
8. An app called App2SD can help you moved apps that will function from the uSD and clear space on the eMMC.
9. Did I mention read and research?
10. One last thing...it's always good form to click "thanks" when assistance is lent.
The senior people on here once were where you are now and are happy to lend a hand. Read the Xda rules and all should be well.

Theres some very very good things in there. I agree with mostly everything you said.
For someone new I really would only recommend sideloading one thing, and that is the amazon marketplace. Before root and the real market I stumbled across alot of suspicious apk's looking for things, people need to be very careful downloading vaguely worded things on file shares and torrent sites.
The google market is well worth it and really it is fairly easy to root and install. The key to anything here is to follow the instructions exactly, word for word
Also we won't need apps2sd. That was mainly for phones with very small internal storage, even when we can repartion we will be able to choose how much storage for apps we want. As it stands right now I believe we have the largest storage available of any android device by far.
Well I'm as noob as they get so, I just want to know if this will get rooted and run Ice Cream Sandwich. I've been eyeballing that 7" Acer tablet too (A100) but I want to see if this may be a better buy since I have no need of a camera.... I'll be watching this forum closely...
Thanks Skeeterpro for that link to SD Formatter. I can now put away the camera I've been using to format my cards.

Good point, chum. Agree with you on Amazon App store. Also, something to remember to everyone that if you DO install an app from Amazon then later delete the Store App....the programs you installed from them will cease to work until you re-install the Amazon App Store app. Really! I thought that was Urban Legend but others have verified.
AppBrain is another along with Android Market I have used.
"Largest storage of any android device by far"....think I might have to ask you how you mean that. There are many android devices with larger internal (eMMC) storage. Unless I mis-read your statement there, partner.

Gotta say I have strong doubts we will see an "official release" of ICS to the NT. As I have said (repeatedly) in the KF forums, BN/Amazon have no reason to upgrade the OS for the devices as it doesn't enhance their revenue stream. The fact remains the NT (and KF) is an e-reader that runs android. Just because it's "called" a tablet doesn't necessarily mean it is the same AS a tablet. These devices exists to sell content. That the NC was so modifiable was gravy. BN learned their lesson, it appears, with the NT (sadly). "Nook Old-Timers" will recall it took BN a long time to upgrade the original NC from 2.1 (Eclair) to 2.2 (Froyo) and that was primarily just for Flash support (to sell more BN content).
If (and that's a BIG "if") the current challenges can be overcome, one of the talented Dev might be able to port something but that could be months away.
Side note: had the Acer A100 for a couple weeks before returning it. Horrible battery life (<5 hours), smaller internal eMMC, and lousy viewing angles broke the deal for me for that price point. Have also read that Acer is most likely abandoning the tablet arena so the "promised ICS release in January" may or may not happen. Just my opinion/observations.

I was wrong. I'm used to phones where there is two partitions, one for data and another for user storage. A quick google search showed me that Honeycomb tablets aren't partitioned apps install right next to user files.
Is it possible to mount the sd card right after it boots without having to manually pull it out and sticking it back in?
Some apps that have data on the sdcard fail at reboot because the nt. Does not automatically remount the card. Ex) thumb keyboard
Here's a tip for people new to Android. There are some apps that says "aren't compatible" with the NT (like Voice search) in the Market, and won't let you install. And there are ones you can't even find in the Market for the NT, like TuneIn radio or Fancy widget.
If you have an Android phone or another Android device, you can install those from the market on the phone. And use ES file explorer or Titanium backup to grab the apk file on the phone and sideload to the NT.
To do it with with ES file explorer. Just hit the menu key, select "App manager" and long press on the app and select backup. The apk file will be in sdcard/backups/apps folder. And get that file over by either dropbox, wifi, or usb for sideloading on the NT.
This is better than downloading from unknown sources.

Sure. Pop one in and go to Settings>Storage and mount the disk. It's just not a good idea to pull a disk while the device is running. Some apps use files from the uSD while the device is running. Pulling it without unmounting can be a problem.
Think coitus interruptus? (Google that and you'll know what I mean!)
nook noob
I got the Nook tablet and rooted it, and I have a few questions...
Why do programs like antutu, dropbox, and the amazon appstore say there is no sdcard? Does the internal memory not work with these, and if so will a micro sd card work with them?
Copy/paste? I cant figure out if it doesn't work or how to do it. Long pressing on text or in a text box doesn't do anything.
Can you change the notification bar to the top like on a standard android device? Using go launcher ex and the notification bar covers the buttons (preferences, settings, etc). Also, can it be the normal slide instead of the pop up style?
Edit: So I tested my micro sd from my atrix and dropbox and antutu benchmark work, and I would assume the amazon appstore would work too. I guess I never really used the phone without that so maybe those apps would fail on that too.

S'ok dude. The only thing I know is how little I know. Still learnin'...

Will Verizon "ever" carry a 32GB S4 model? Update: Yes, finally.

The only near official info from Verizon so far appears to be to CNET, which basically said, "We (VZW) have no current information on a 32GB model". That of course is not a confirmation that they will or will not, but considering AT&T has a 32GB and even tweeted the week of their launch they would- Seems anecdotally bad for a VZW 32GB.
Seems if we do not keep this issue "alive" in some manner and VZW has no current plans, they probably never will.
Get an SD card. That's what they're for.
Sent from my Droid DNA
Based on the device you have only has 11gb out of box and no sd, seems you might not use a bunch of apps. Especially not the newer 3d games that take 2gb of storage.
Apps can not go on the sd card, so not an applicable option for some people. What MOS are you? I was an 0331.
I was tempted to wait for the 32 but was scared that by the time it got released (if ever) Verizon would have patched the boot loader exploit. Not worth the gamble for me.

Based on the device you have only has 11gb out of box and no sd, seems you might not use a bunch of apps. Especially not the newer 3d games that take 2gb of storage.
Apps can not go on the sd card, so not an applicable option for some people. What MOS are you? I was an 0331.

You can install apps to the SD card, and most games allow you to save all of that extra data to the SD.
I'm a 7599 right now.

You can not install or move data with the S4, nor any Jellybean OS device. Android got rid of the option. Some devs offer the ability to install data to the card, but most do not due to customer complaints when the app messes up (swapping cards is example how apps mess up and users do not make the connection why). No conjecture on my part, but one of several actual Android team reasons why the feature was removed. The main reason was they hated the feature to begin with.
You can root, but the results with virtual mounting apps have been mixed, depending on the apps.

Ah, today I learned. I never realized they actually removed this feature because I didn't actually use it.
Understandable considering your device Even Samsung was saying that and they should know better.
I think that that's the problem of everyone. Most of those upgrading to S4 are coming from S2. They are saying: "F**k, I'm buying the 16gb because that's enough space and I can move the apps to the sdcard". Most of S2 users are still running on 4.0
I think in a few months there will be more than expected complaints and customers will point out that Samsung and Verizon CSR/Sales misled that you can put apps on sd.
It makes no sense not to offer larger models for this device. If you will not use the storage buy the 16, and buy the 32 if you will. Verizon are being arrogant a$$e$ for at least not giving a public answer. Verizon have not responded to customer or media inquiries beyond a generic, "We have no current information". This same lame answer is from their Sales & Marketing department. The very people that WOULD know.
I guess a, "We are not going to carry it, because we are milking customers at the same price point for a two year as the 32 model last year" is too honest.

I have sent a note and others as well last week, but no response. Not even a generic one. Same link.
good luck to you guys hoping for the 32gb version. my 16gb came with 9.8gb of device storage available. i've got about 70 of the downloaded apps i normally use installed and still have 7.7gb of internal memory free. admittedly i don't use my s4 for gaming, that's what the n7 is for. i do, however, have over 30gb of media and docs loaded up to my 64gb sd card. hopefully they come out with higher capacity sd cards since that's where i'll see the crunch sooner. either way very nice device, the s4 is. and i'm already rooted!

Same here. Some sort of reply would be a nice thing just to confirm the message got somewhere. Hopefully someone is seeing the messages and figured customer feedback is never a bad thing.
when i found this post. i thought i would find my answer . i guess know one knows.
The ones that do, appear too arrogant to bother saying, in spite of requests for an answer.
This is the reply I got when inquiring about the 32gb S4 using the link listed above.
Your inquiry would need to be directed to the manufacturer.* You may contact Samsung at 1-888-987-4357.* Samsung makes the decisions on what devices and the timeframes in which they are released.

I guess they are just passing the buck and blaming Samsung.

There are no current plans for a 32gb model from Verizon. That being said, if they do release a 32gb version it will be months from now as to make sure they get sales for the 16gb now. This is common practice for years. Same goes for different colors and such.
Officially no plans to release a 32gb version. Doesn't mean there won;t be one down the road.
