[Q] LG L9 P769 locked bootloader. Installed CWM - LG Optimus L9 P760, P765, P768, P769

I just installed CWM for this phone and the bootloader is still locked. But does this mean i could install custom firmware? or do i just now have a way to back up my phone and recover?

Locked boot loader means that you cannot install custom roms on the phone. There are certain tweaks that can be installed through CWM, there are also a few modified (themed and tweaked) stock roms floating around in the general section of this forum.
I can honestly say that once you delete most of the bloat, apply a few tweaks...our phone runs just fine on stock-ish firmware.

Just stay on modded stock. ( check kuma82's ROM in dev section ) If you want to install custom roms then you HAVE to unlock your bootloader.

Thank you guys for the information. I am going to check out that rom it sounds pretty good and i honestly dont really need anything super fancy i just want to be able to take advantage of this sd card.
Really annoying that it wasn't implimented on the original firmware to be able to move apps to the sd card. It seems like a very long running theme with android that there are all sorts of issues moving apps to the sd card. Best way i was able to take advantage of my sd card was with my old lg p509 using the ungazed script.

Good luck.

[Q] Device Variants

My dad has a T-Mobile LG Optimus L9 769 and I'm planning on rooting it and putting a custom ROM on it. I see that the device has different versions and the ROMs for the LG phone are labeled according to their versions. Getting to my question, is it possible to put a P760 ROM on a P769 phone? I've tried my best to look through the Q&A's and the General forum for this information but I did not find it. Thanks in advance.

Possible but not recommended. And that's a stock rom, not a custom one. Also unlocking bootloader isn't for newbies so i wouldn't flash a custom rom until you know more about stuff. So your dad wouldn't beat the crap outta you.

From what I've read you will get an inverted screen if you flash a P760 rom on P769 because of the screen size difference.

Don't let looks deceive you LOL . I've looked at the steps and its kind of similar to the G2X bootloader unlock and custom recovery. I looked at the thread to unlock the bootloader and I see that there is no known way to re-lock it so I might not even s-off the phone for warranty purposes.

unlock bootloader lgms769(metropcs)

ok i have a lgms769 from metropcs i flashed the t-mobile 20vf kdz( the lg p769) i have root but cant unlock bootloader or install recovery but i have root, i had it unlocked til i flashed a wrong rom and had bricked it.
someone please help
+1 this.I'm not gonna even bother flashing a TMO ROM. Too much headache.
I'm also frustrated that there are no kdz files or ROMs specifically for the L9 MetroPCS version.
Lgms769 is exactly like P769. Another thing (to OP) you would know if you unlocked the bootloader. Unlocking bootloader requires flashing euro kdz 20b, and you will mess your phone up if you don't do some reading.

but with the P769 firmware, does the phone still function properly on MetroPCS's 4G ??? And is there no simple way to unlock it? Seems to be way too complicated.
Check phandroid there is a cyanogen mod by bobzhome and I believe they are near perfect (both versions).

There is no simple way to unlock.
Second question
Yes it operates fine on the T-Mobile ROM. MetroPCS and T-Mobile have merged together.

I downloaded rom toolbox and ran the cpu info script and the lgms769 has a lg p769 board in it, i have root and recovery on lgms769 v10b so its ok i guess im woeking on a custom rom.
And for update binary ro.product.device is u2.

On OP is a tweak to add move 2 sd, and a swap script that will allow you to install large games. Since you have rom toolbox just use it to change the build.prop and add the swap script (set at boot)

Metro already allows moving to SD card. That's where the script idea came from I believe

I added it to the build.prop, not unless they changed something when it finally came out. That option was not present in the build.prop of the kdz I got from lg. I found this out by comparing the build.prop of wind and T-Mobile.

I am a newbee to embedded devices, can someone help me or let me know what I can do with this mobile (LGM769 MetroPCS)?
Can the bootloader be unlocked and can I run custom ROMs on it? I read a lot of posts which just confused me (Maybe it's my Multiple Sclerosis) maybe I am just thick either way some help would be much appreciated. I know this mobile is getting old but it's the only thing I have.
Thanks,

No brother, this phone is definitely a nightmare. Unlocking the bootloader is the tricky part. I haven't tried myself, can't afford for my phone to be down while attempting to unlock the bootloader. There are those who have succeeded on the first try and there are those who have tried many times and failed.
If you have plenty of free time on your hands, then I'd give it a shot. But, before you do, make sure you have LGs drivers installed on your PC as well as the OMAP4 fastboot drivers. Because of the OMAP4 fastboot drivers, this phone is practically unbrickable. Just search the threads in the L9 forums for 'fastboot'.
As for your device getting old, I still have a Optimus One variant, P509, that's still running today. And there's a KitKat ROM for it too. I really wish the L9 was as easy to manage as my Optimus T is.
Best of luck
Thank you for the reply I'll check it out because this is my only mobile right now. Might have to rethink it. I read the whole thread and noticed that this so-called "devil phone" is not worth the effort. Next time I will just purchase a mobile that has been boot-loader unlocked and root potential and be done with it..lol
Cheers!

How come there are so many Custom ROMS for the L9 when

it is one of the hardest phone to unlock the bootloader and install custom roms? How many users have really installed custom roms on their L9s? At least the p769?

You can make a poll I guess?
For me, I cannot justify the benefit of custom rom + 720p video vs. a fully-working excellent-battery-life modified stock with 1080p video capture
Moto Defy has even more roms and a locked bootloader imposible to unlock. I have a p768 and im really enjoying cm10.1.3. Its a lot better than stock in many ways.

me too. CM is a beautiful and stable rom. I hope in future someone will fix 1080p recording...
I am not debating the value of stock vs. custom roms guys. I have a rooted G1 and an HD2 and about 4 more rooted devices so I know the value of rooting. I was only wondering about custom roms for the L9 since all I read is issue after issue with rooting and devs leaving this phone for a different one.
I'm one of the lucky few.

Fantastic. Could you please make an instructional video or something similar with all the files you used in one place so the rest of us lesser people can have enjoyment at your level?
There's at least one reason I can easily pick a custom ROM over stock: no emulated storage with apps to sd . well I guess that's two reqsons. Please, the CM 10.1 ROM for P769 is daily driver material.. I would say stock is less functional..

well you can get everything from modded stock roms to cynogenmod with a unlocked phone. the phone being so locked down it probably the main reason you don't see much being done with it.

The phone is great, but LG locking up the bootloader killed it for everyone. Tho I was lucky enough to have an unlockable one I still may just consider switching to another device. The trouble with the bootloader is enough to slow down progress and that alone is a good enough reason to convince me to find something better. I'm not considering LG unless my next option is the G2 or N5. I'd even be content with an N4.

I must have been lucky. I downloaded lgpwn.apk and ran that on the phone and whala in like 2 minutes my phone was rooted. Then i installed supersu and busybox. I havent installed a custom rom yet because i am happy with the stock rom but i wanted to get rid of some of the bloatware and i am happy to have link2sd working so i can offload some apps to the sd card.
If requested i can supply the file i used but i imagine its not hard to find.

Could you please help me out. Does the lgpwn.apk root it and unlock the bootloader? Could you please supply the file? Thanks.

i think your confusion root with unlocked. we can mod the stock rom and we so. but its all done by hand by you not simply flashing a new one and no updates will work you will need to reflash stock non rooted using the tools hear. you will be stuck with the rom you have when they quit updating the device. i agree don't think i will be buying another lg phone but a nexus 5 because nexus products are easily unlocked etc by one simple adb command.
I have a question. @Lelus, @leolawliet, @kuma82, is there any way to package a ROM as a KDZ and flash using the offline flash method? Or is that a ridiculous thought?

I think it simply roots the phone. To install another rom i used rom manager from the play store and installed clockwork mod.

I know someone who managed to make cwm flashable ROMs out of .kdz firmwares, but not of someone who managed to repackage the .kdz.

[Q] p769 jellybean conundrum

So im sure there are probably a million posts pertaining to this issue, but I cant for the life of me seem to find them. So,i decided to sign up to this website to ask for help. I have an lg optimus l9 (p769) and when i got the phone i rooted it of course. Im still running ics by the way. The first thing I did when I rooted was delete all of the bloatware. Then I started getting the ota update for jellybean. So, i impulsively unrooted my phone so i could get the update. Problem is, because i deleted the bloatware, i cant get the update. I tried a factory reset but to no avail. So now I have an unrooted l9 running the primitive ics that will not install jellybean because i deleted the bloatware. How do i fix this???? Im just tired of being harangued by the ota updates and not being able to install them. Please help!!!

Download and install the 'L9RecoveryInstaller.apk'. This will install a bootstrapped version of CMW to your device. Bear in mind that this recovery is limited due to the fact that your bootloader is locked. You can get L9RecoveryInstaller here.
Use the offline KDZ method to install a prerooted CWM backup which you can find here

I see from googling your device seems like there aren't any devs for a ROM on your device however it does have a preinstalled 3e recovery which is a basic one but as for new ROM I do not believe there is a custom recovery or ROM at the moment sorry man. Hopefully if it has more demnland for being built it might have some Dev interests. However though I can give you a place where you can ask for a custom recovery to be built by some indie devs. Unleashedprepaids.com is a good place to check for info and ask for a custom recovery build. Good luck man.

I would want to say no because it's a stock recovery that they included it may have while options and or side loading with adb maybe but as for backing up I'm not sure most likely not. The only way I've personally done backups without a custom recovery was with nandroid backup which is also what I used for my lg 70 I used to own and it did really well on backing itself up I made a guide on that ms323 specific device on unleashedprepaids form in the lg section of MetroPCS . just make sure you have busy box installed if you do nandroid backup route.
