Wifi Tether working without plan - AT&T LG Optimus G

Thanks to the guys that posted on the Optimus G Pro forum on how to make bypass the tether block that AT&T puts on the LGOG. After searching for months on how to make tethering work on my LGOG I was about to give up, when I saw that on the LGOG Pro forum somebody had gotten wifi tether to work. I tried their method and it worked on my e970 too! I TAKE NO CREDIT FOR THIS, just wanted to make sure it was in this forum too since it seems to work on the e970 as well.
You'll need your LGOG to be rooted and the SQLite editor app. It's $3 on Google play store. Maybe there's a free alternative but that's what I used.
After installing that, follow these steps:
1) Go to device settings and attempted to turn on mobile tethering, this will open a window saying it's blocked
2) hit ok and exit, Open SQLite
3) under apps tab find and select com.android.providers.settings
4)select settings.db (on mine it's the only thing listed)
5)select system on the next page
6) hit the search button at top right
7) select name in the drop down box for filter field
8) type name in filter value
9) type "tether_entitlement_check_state"
10) in the field on the right where it says "1" long press and select edit field
11) enter "0" (that's a zero)
12) reboot and you're good to go, you'll be able to enable through the native controls under system settings
according to the guys on the other post using e980 LGOG pro, AT&T has yet to charge any fees or reprimand any of them, but there's always the chance you'll be the first. I haven't used this much yet, just enough to test functionality. It definitely works, but I can't say yet if AT&T will burn me for it.

Don't tether any device that uses other than a mobile browser or they will detect it. You can make Firefox on a laptop spoof that it is a mobile browser so that may work but I don't know for sure.

Yep if op hadn't found that process before now it's very likely he didn't know about that and is going to lose his unlimited data and get put on a regular plan in a flash. This is why I got rid of my unlimited data.

Even if your plan allows tethering the authentication sometimes fails, it's better to turn it off.

Authentication only fails on stock roms. I have had no issues whatsoever on aosp derivatives and a plan that allows tethering in almost a year of usage.

[Q] ATT Tethering

OK. New to this and really don't want to screw it up now. I am assuming that with the below steps you will be not using the ATT Tethering and will not get scolded from the ATT Gods via email for using the tethering.
I was reading over the WORKING Hotspot/Tethering WITHOUT Tethering Plan and since I cannot send this question over to the post itself. I will ask it here.
!CONFIRMED WORKING ON WEBTOP!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=980636
I have a few questions that really need answering because the forum is jumbled with three different answers. My Atrix is on the Build number 4.5.91. It's rooted and I have downloaded the Root Explorer app.
I have the following in my Telephone.db as stated in Step 6 below. I have thus changed the proper settings to 2,3,4.
Can someone please correct me if I am wrong?
1 - tmobile
2 - att us hsdpa
3- att us mms
4- att us tether
5 - att us
6- rogers internet
7- rogers media
1) Enable Airplane Mode
(hold power button for three seconds, select Airplane Mode)
2) Open Root Explorer
3) Navigate to: /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/
4) Click on "telephony.db"** (this should open the db using SQLite Editor)
5) Select "carriers"
6) You should see a long list of APN settings for various carriers, the ones you are interested in are rows 2, 3, and 4. Scroll ALL THE WAY TO THE RIGHT and the last column should be labeled "preloaded." You will notice that each is labeled "true" press and hold the word "true" in row 4 and select "Edit Field" from the pop up menu. Change the "true" to "false" and click "Save". Repeat this step for rows 6 and 7.
7b) Edit the type field of row 2. Right now the field says "tether". Change it so that it says "default, agps, fota, supl, fota, tether"
7c) Change the APN field in row 4 from BROADBAND to wap.cingular
8) Press back twice to close the SQLite editor and you should be back in Root Explorer. Close Root Explorer.
9) Disable Airplane Mode
10) Select the radio button for the APN AT&T Tether.
11) Reboot phone.
13) Enjoy! Mobile Hotspot should now work first time no issues!
Note: (Due to some pre-existing (bug?) in the software, you do need to have wifi turned on BEFORE you enable Mobile Hotspot for it to set up properly. If you forget it will hang until you enable wifi.)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1160452
Followed that simple guide and have not gotten any message from AT&T regarding tethering using the Mobile Hotspot app.
Yeap that was the first thing I did. Back in Aug 16 2011. I ran my the tethering on Aug 24-27 and low and behod I got my Notice from AT&T yesterday. Remember it's not when you get the tethering going that they catch you. It when you run it a few times and rackup some serious GB. Heck I have not even got my statement as of yet to see what I did in Aug-Sept. Watched a few netflix (All of Season 6 of stargate) would imagine brought me in their bulls-eye.
Seems like a lot more trouble than using WiFi Tether, and Ive never one got an email or anything from att.
Edit: here is the link.
I was using the Hotspot Tether not the USB. Could I be getting confused between the two? If you look at the instructions, basically this mod/change will not use the tether option per the normal use. It will then use the HSPA option. Which I am assuming is a good way to hide your internet use?

[Q] Wireless Tethering Issues

Hello all I am paying for a wireless tethering plan yet the mobile hotspot seems to time out every 12 seconds. It will lode a web site usually half way before my data just drops to 0 kb/s and I have about 4 bars of lte. I don't know if there is a way to fix this, I have tried turning it on and off and rebooting but nothing seems to help this issue. When it stops responding to my computer the device name changes to a * and then it will not send data anymore. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks
I'm running into the same problem as well. I can tether through USB just fine but whenever I use the mobile hotspot my internet starts to timeout. I'll be lucky if I can go 5 minutes without it timing out.
Are either of you using Tasker? I had a very similar problem where I was using Tasker to determine when I was home by toggling Wifi to check for my home network and then setting sound profiles. I found that tasker would toggle the wifi which caused my wifi tether to stop working. It would look like it was on, but wouldn't send data. I fixed it by having tasker stop toggling wifi when running my wifi tether app..
Any smart action profiles set? Turn it off & see if it continues.

Mmh, I've got the EU RAZR (don't have to pay to route my connection where I want) and the Wireless Tethering is working flawlessly (HSPA+).
Maybe they haven't used the same software OR they've used the same software but there's a problem when LTE is ON.
Anyway, the EU RAZR is about to get an OTA...and VZW one should as well.

You may be on to something here. I'm going to try to wifi tether on 3G to see what happens.
I'm finding tethering is better with 3g than 4g for some reason.

Setting the data connection to 3G didn't help. It took a little bit longer to time out this time but it still happened.
So I kind of figured out why I'm getting timed out, but I'm no closer to a solution.
When I tether through USB, 4G will stay connected. Nothing wrong with it.
When I tether through WiFI, I time out because the 4G connection drops after a few seconds and when 4G is re-established. The 4G connection does not have data, even though it says 4G. I cannot access data on my phone or on any tethered device.
When I turn off the mobile hotspot, then my 4G will drop again and when 4G is re-established, then data starts to work again.
edit:
Maybe I have a faulty phone. I'm going to try to exchange it this weekend.

I have similar problem connecting a Kindle Fire to a Verizon provisioned hotspot. Web browsing doesnt work but music, videos, apps, and books seem to work. I haven't had a chance to check but on the Thunderbolt we had a similar issue and it turned it to be bad dns server for the wifi connected devices.
I don't have the ability to set a custom DNS server on the Fire so I can't check this at the moment. I'll report back when I can verify if this is the issue with a laptop.
I have a EU razr and I also have problems with Wifi tether - my computer can connect fine but I get "limited connectivity" and no Internet access. Worked without issue on SE Arc with same provider and APN settings.
What other Hotspot apps are out there that hopefully work better?
Same issue.
From what I have been reading on other forums this is a known issue that Motorola is working on and the ETA for the fix is no more than two weeks. We'll see.
This seems to work
I tried the steps below and haven't had a drop in the last 15 minutes. I'm not a network guy so I don't know the reasoning behind why this worked for me, but so far so good. If you're not comfortable messing with the Registry, then don't try this. I used a spare PC to test it first.
Change the Default Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) Size Settings
1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. Locate and then click the following subkey in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NdisWan\Parameters
3. Add a Protocols subkey (if it does not already exist). To do so:
a. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
b. Type Protocols, and then press ENTER.
4. Add a 0 (zero) subkey to the Protocols subkey. To do so:
a. Click the Protocols subkey that you created step 3.
b. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
c. Type 0 (zero), and then press ENTER.
5. Click the 0 subkey that you created in step 4.
6. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
7. In the Value data box, type ProtocolType, and then click OK.
8. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
9. In the Value data box, type 800, make sure Hexadecimal is selected under Base, and then click OK.
10. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
11. Type PPPProtocolType, and then press ENTER.
12. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
13. In the Value data box, type 21, make sure Hexadecimal is selected under Base, and then click OK.
14. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
15. Type ProtocolMTU, and then press ENTER.
16. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
17. Under Base, click Decimal, type the MTU size that you want in the Value data box, and then click OK. ( I used 1400)
18. Quit Registry Editor.
19. Restart your computer.
On the Razr: Open Mobile Hotspot Settings-> Configure Mobile Hotspot. At the bottom, change the Client (DHCP) start address to 172.168.20.10

Any updates to this? Having the same problem and can't seem to make it work. Don't have a rooted RAZR so can't try the download link.
Hey! I used to have problems for a while with my tethering as well and ANY device I connected just wouldn't have access to the internet. I tried a lot of different apps, methods etc., to get it working and nothing seemed to work. But one day, I tried my own thing. I simply connected my device via wifi tethering (I don't use USB, but this should still work), and then, after it was connected, I simply opened my phones web browser to make sure I could access a data connection in the first place. And lo and behold, my tethering is working just fine!
So to put simply, what you should try is:
1) Connect your device via tethering (I used wifi, but usb should work too!).
2) Make sure you actually have a data connection! And then, open the web browser on your phone, and go to a web page (I just go to google )
3) Enjoy your tethering.
I hope this works for everyone, and not just me! XD
The last update from verizon fixed this issue.

[Q] How to disable 'attwifi' access point?

I have rooted 2.3.6 ROM based on AT&T stock rom. It has 'attwifi' access point which phone tries to connect whenever I walk next to any Starbucks. The problem is that most AT&T access points want me to either login or, at least, click on some stupid check-box in browser. So unless I open browser and do it, I lose my Internet connectivity.
I would like to remove or disable this attwifi access point, but in settings it does not give me any option to do so. I even went as far as trying to remove it from /data/wifi config files but it just gets resurrected.
Does anyone know how to remove or disable this access point?
In wi fi settings there is an option to automatically connect to att wifi network. Uncheck that
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
Also in your wifi settings find the attwifi network, long press, and select forget network. That worked for me, but I'm not on the stock ROM anymore.
Sent from my Galaxy S II (i777)
Pretty stupid of me! The option to disable auto connect was right in front of me all the time.
Thanks.
It's still would be interesting to know if attwifi can be deleted or changed to regular (forgetable) network. How did they do it, I wonder?
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using xda premium
you should be able to remove it from the listed access points (ie tell the phone to "forget" it). However I haven't been on the stock rom in a few months now, so i'm not sure how you'd do it. pretty sure if you just go into wifi settings and do a long hold on the access point name it'll give the option to forget it.
I will probably disable mine as well. I noticed it come on in the McDonald's drive through, then nothing was loading.

Really? Because I just typed up this post on my PC in Google Chrome (without the "user agent switcher" extension) and I am currently tethered to my Vibrant. I've also tested Internet Explorer, which also works while tethered to my Vibrant... I'm using the app I mentioned above, although the built in wireless tether feature also works for me. Then again, I am using a custom rom, so that could explain why it works for me. Anywho... landrian18, you want to know how to get tether on your device? OK, I'll show you how to do it both on an ICS rom and with the "WiFi Tether for Root Users" app.
On an ICS rom:
Note- I'm not positive this is the same method you would use on euphoria as I'm on a different ICS rom, however, you can still try and see. It should be the same.
1. Go into your phones system settings, this can be accomplished by either locating the settings icon in your app drawer/home screen or by clicking the leftmost physical touch button on your phone.
2. Under WIRELESS & NETWORKS click More....
3. Click Tethering & portable hotspot.
4. Click on Portable Wi-Fi hotspot.
Note 2- Your phone is now acting like a Wi-Fi hotspot and is accessible/detectable by almost all wireless devices except other Android smart phones. If you would like to encrypt your Wi-Fi hotspot click Configure Wi-Fi hotspot and change the password. You can also rename the Wi-Fi hotspot by changing the SSID from AndroidAP (or whatever the default is) to whatever you'd like.
On the app:
Note- These steps are written under the assumption that you have already installed the "WiFi Tether for Root Users" application.
1. Locate and launch the WiFi Tether for Root Users application.
2. Done. That's all you got to do.
Note 2- If you want to customize the SSID, password (remove password), encryption type, etc. Simply go into the apps settings.
IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE, FEEL FREE TO ASK.
I'm on a custom ROM I've been tethering forever but now I get redirected to TMobiles tethering advertisement page . Others have recently complained about this on XDA . It only works of I use user agent switcher .

Just a quick question, are you sure you have the vibrant, and not the galaxy s 4g? There is no stock gingerbread on the vibrant...
Side note, I've used easy tether (great alternative to pda net) along with firefox for a few years and have never seen the t mobile warning. Used it on stock and rooted g1 and vibrant with never any issues.
Does an incoming call drop your usb internet connection and does it charge while connected?
Unless I'm wrong the sgh-t959v is a vibrant as observed from the label. I updated via kies to gingerbread rom from mfg that why I called it stock, not a custom rom.
T959v isn't the same as our t959 Vibrants.
Ours didn't have a GB update via Kies. Be careful even using Kies.
-I'm not sure there is much in our Vibrant thread that applies to t959v at all. Is the t959v the Samsung Blaze 4g? I must research this when I have time.
note: don't modify your phone with anything you see here at all until someone with more knowledge chimes in. I think its a bad idea.
T959v is the galaxy s 4g! T959 is the vibrant. The vibrant never got the gingerbread update, galaxy s 4g did.
Easy tether does charge while in use, phone calls I don't know, never tried.

It should be noted that some carriers (such as T-Mobile) use the number of hops left on packets that hit their servers to indicate that you're using tethering rather than cellphone data.
The xt_HL.ko netfilter driver included with a customer kernel should allow a user to use the IP Tables rule to change tethered traffic TTL with the default TTL of the device. This would make tethered data appear as if it's actually cellphone data.
I think this is currently contained in CM (at least it is on my OPO), but doesn't seem to be contained in the default kernel for moto phones (though I've only tested the 2013 X).
A guide about including this in a kernel can be found here, and I encourage anyone kernel devs out there to at least give this a look.
Thanks!
I have Verizon unlimited and the tethering worked for me without any type of verification or mod to the system provisions.
Usually because of unlimited this is deactivated to force the subscriber into paying the additional $30 monthly charge.
Are other carriers not allowing you guys to tether or something?
