[Review] TechMatte Qi Compatible Wireless Receiver
Reposted since the original post disappeared. Moderator (Naddict) said it may have been a system issue last night.
I was asked to review the TechMatte Qi Wireless Receiver. I already had one of the "blue" Qi receivers that I got off of eBay and have been using for close to a week. There is nothing wrong with the "Blue" Receiver, but this was an opportunity to look at a different version of receiver. There are also different versions of Blue receivers which I have not tried as well as other white and black receivers.
This is a review about a specific Sellers product, what they are selling, what it costs, how it compared and installed and my opinion of it.
The package arrived via First Class mail and inside was a small cardboard package.

Inside the package was three items:
The Qi Reciever
A Thank You Card with warranty and return policies on it
Instruction Card
The Reciever
Pics of the Receiver both front and back.
Compared to the "Blue" Version
Note that my "blue" version only has 2 connectors. I've now seen others which have 3. The TechMatte receiver has 3 and they are spaced properly where the "Blue" receiver was a bit too close.
In the picture, the arrow on the "Blue" receiver image shows that I had trimmed the edge of the receiver. I also had removed the blue sticker on the cover side of the receiver in an attempt to make it thinner.
The arrows on the white/black receiver show where the tape that holds the receiver in place is, and the 3 connectors which are used to connect to the phone.
The advantage to have 3 connectors is that it eliminates any guessing which connectors to use.
The "Blue" Receiver installed in the phone
Note that I had removed the blue sticker on the cover side of the receiver to make it "thinner". I had also trimmed it a bit.
The TechMatte Receiver Installed in the phone
The 3 connectors were properly spaced on this receiver unlike the "blue" one that I had been using. The "Blue" had only 2 connectors and they were too closely spaced making the connection iffy.
No trimming or adjustments were needed.
The unit sits very flat, appeared to be wide to me, but when I put the cover on there was no bulge at all.
Images with cover on
Didn't bother with any images since I couldn't even tell there was a receiver in the phone. As a result, using the case I use (Spigen Bounce) there was no issue either.
Performance
This receiver worked the first time I installed it. No re-positioning or re-seating necessary. I have a Nokia DT-900 pad at the house and it links and charges pretty much as soon as you place the phone on the pad even with the Bounce case.
Early in the morning when I tried it, the phone was pretty much already fully charged. It looked like the charge rate was lower than I expected. However later in the morning when I did some real looking and compared between Battery Charger and the Galaxy Battery Charge apps, all I have seen is a solid 640mAh when charging.
While the phone gets warm while charging as expected, it doesn't get overly hot. I will do a real heat test between the two when I get the "Blue" receiver to a co-working. Will use a infrared heat detector to see what the temps are between the two phones in the same configuration. I suspect they will be similar if not the same.
NFC Usage
One issue that came up while testing was whether or not the receiver would effect the usage of the NFC on the phone. I had not used NFC on the phone yet and really didn't have anything to test it with on hand. Will update when I get some tags to test.
**UPDATE**
I received some NFC tags today to test this part that I was originally not able to test. The receiver does make a pretty big difference in how well the phone can see the tags. Without it, they are read very easily and quickly without really having to pay much attention where you are tapping (if you even have to touch). With the receiver, you have to actually touch, and move it around a bit to be seen. If you need to or want to use NFC on a regular basis, you most likely need to look at a different receiver for your note 3.

Cost/Website etc...
TechMatte did not povide any sales info with the package. But finding where they sell it was easy.
URL: See Update below
**UPDATE** They sent me this URL as the location for purchase since the other one will apparently be discontinued soon.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GMRXD9U
Price: $12.99
Shipping: $1.99 (assumed First Class Mail) or expedited for $4.99 (Assumed priority Mail). Note that this shipped from PA and it took only 2 days to get to the house in Arizona via regular First Class Mail. The purchase of 2 or more would qualify for free shipping if you needed more than one.
Looking at the new website link it includes Free Shipping which is assumed to be by First Class mail. This should get to most in the Continental US in 2 days or so.
The unit is shipped from the US, so in many cases it will get delivered much quicker than the same types of units sold on eBay and shipped from China. The unit I got was shipped from PA and got to AZ in 2 days via First Class Mail in a white padded envelope.
Warranty:
30-Day Money Back Guarantee
12 Month Replacement Warranty
They have local support via a website, email and have a link for Amazon reviews to post your review.
Documentation:
A welcome sight.... The package included a Thanks card and an Instruction sheet though that really wasn't needed:
My Impressions
Showed quick shipping (from PA to AZ in 2 days)
Packing was well done and complete
Included documentation
Easy to install, Pin spacing was correct and package is flat.
No perceptible bulge so it works with all cases.
Worked the first time with no adjustments
A bit higher priced than others, but again, quick shipping and local support
Uses an Amazon shopping cart system with reviews.
Performance matched previously used products.
Not Ebay with shipping from China 7-10 day shipping.
No recommended if you need or want to use NFC.
Would most likely look this direction if I needed more of them and would recommend them to others.
As for cost... hmm.. $700 phone, $15 with shipping Qi receiver... patience in shipping time (I want it now mentality) ... fine with me.
But I can get it cheaper in China
Good for you. Seriously, that is not relevant. Most people can't hitch a ride to China to buy products at wholesale.
eBay may be a choice as well, but you most likely are not going to get it in 2 days, and you many times don't know exactly which version they are selling. Do the eBay sellers offer 12 month replacement? Most likely not.
Disclosure
I was asked to review this product. I already had a working solution but agreed to do so. They sent the product free of charge to allow for the review but that had nothing to do with my opinion of what I got, how it was packaged, how it installed for functioned. I am not associated with TechMatte Inc and have no interest in their company. I was certainly not obligated to provide a "good" review.

Good review, I missed the qi charging from my nexus 4, when I got my note 2, now that I have the note 3, looks like a viable option again.

Updated original review with a video of someone else using what appears to be the same receiver. They are showing NFC issues with it on. I still don't have the NFC tags yet so have not been able to test.
Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfGeL4Gfw-w&t=4m47s

I can confirm that NFC does NOT work with the TechMatte Qi receiver. I also have the white Qi receiver from eBay, and NFC works perfectly with it in my phone. Both Qi receivers add little to no bulge whatsoever, and they both charge my Note 3 at 640mah while sitting on my Nokia DT900. If NFC doesn't matter to you, then I'd recommend the TechMatte Qi receiver. While neither receivers add a bulge to the battery door. The TechMatte Qi receiver is slightly wider, and has an extra coil or just has the coil spread apart wider, which allows you to set the your phone down on to the Qi charger without having to pay attention to be sure that it's charging. The TechMatte Qi receiver charges my Note 3 no matter where I set it on my Qi charger. With the eBay Qi receiver, I have to be more careful with where I set my phone down on to the Qi charger.

Yes it does.
Sorry, thought I said that in my previous post. I edited my previous post to add that it does work just fine.
Sent from my White Note 3 via TapaTalk

Thanks for doing this revew krelvinaz, I just ordered one of these based on it being ultra-thin, charges at 640mA and even though it's shown to interfere with NFC, that's irrelevant to me.
You can buy it through their site and pay the shipping, or buy it from Amazon (they're still the seller) and get free shipping (I just ordered it through Amazon for $12.99, no tax and free shipping):
TechMatte Qi Receiver

Update on Their Sales page
TechMatte sent me a new sales link for their product. The one originally in the review is apparently going to be shutdown.
The New Link is on Amazon itself:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GMRXD9U
Price: $12.99
Shipping: FREE
It now shows free shipping as well. Assume the shipping is via First Class mail which is how they sent mine which means most people in the Continental US should get it in about 2-3 days.

Any idea if this receiver will continue to charge the battery, if used with the Samsung S-View case?

I would imagine that the pad would cover the pin area of where the s-view cover pin should be touching, which would defeat the whole purpose of having the S-view case in the first place.

I know you mentioned no bulge, but that's with a case, which will hide any bulge.
How does it look w/o a case?

I have the same blue qi receiver that you have which I got from ebay also but with the 3 prong.

This might actually work. Unlike many of the Qi receiver I've seen, this one has contacts on the outside of the receiver where the contacts are. I think they pass through the contact signals. I would have to put a meter on them to know are not though.
This is the back of the receiver (facing the cover):

Actually what I said was that I couldn't see that there was a receiver in the phone after I put the back on. That is why I didn't post any pictures as you couldn't tell the difference between the before and after picture. They looked the same.
The result was it would also not have any effect of using any case you could normally use.

Awesome review! Thanks...now I have something for my wife to give me for Christmas!

I received some NFC tags in this afternoon and gave them a try.
With the TechMatte Receiver, they do work, but the receiver is causing them to be harder to read.
I removed it to see what it would be like without it completely (never really used NFC tags before) and found they worked a lot better without it.
I have a different Receiver coming in which has NFC built in and will post info on what I find on it. Will be in a different post as it is not related to TechMatte's product.

Just a quick note that I got mine today and installed without a hassle!...I even accidentally left the note running when I putting the receiver on!
I've got the Nokia DT900 charger as well and it works as expected. And according to the charge rate app, it's charging at 640mA as well.
You do have to apply just a tiny bit of extra force to snap the back cover back on around where the receiver is...But it's an absolutely slight amount of pressure and I'd challenge anyone to detect any "bulge" between a note3 with and without this receiver.
I also tried putting a couple of mail catalogs (total thickness of about 1/4inch) between the charger and phone and it still charged...Which is great, it shouldn't be a problem to put just about any case on it and still retain the wireless charging capability.

So I could use this charger with pretty much any case that I want? I totally want to do this since I hate plugging/unplugging wires.
All I would have to do then is find a mat that supports Qi correct?

Yes, just keep in mind this its a slower charge than using the AC charger that comes with the phone. 1800mAh > 640mAh. Shook it its good for keeping you device charged, but won't charge it really fast like the AC one.
I am using two right now (pads) one on my office desk at work, and one by my lazyboy chair in the living room.
When I am sleeping, which may be a series of naps, I use a full AC charger, 1 to make sure when I get up it is fullly charged, 2 I don't play with my phone when I am trying to sleep, so no point using a pad there.

Sounds good. Next week I will be ordering a bunch of accessories for my N900 so that they are at the house when I arrive back stateside and I am looking for the Qi setup.
Are all of these wireless chargers in the 640mAh range? I don't think that it will bother me so much as I am in the same boat as you. I usually have the cord at the side of the bed and would like to have one of these in the family room where I spend most of my time.

Car Holder-ProClip + Brodit

Not Much to say really...
I bought a ProClip specially made for my Volvo S40 (new shape!) which basically fits between the vent and the dash.
I wanted something that didnt cover the vent as... well obvious reason really, it would heat up the phone! (or cool it too much )
I also wanted something that was not a drill-method to fit.
So i went ahead and bought a £56 kit including the proclip and a broadit holder for the Wizard. The holder is horizontal and holds the phone with the keypad open.
Fit was OK.. i was expecting a better fit but at times, i noticed the proclip does pop out. nothing to worry about as its only one part, the vertical part is defintly clipped in tight!
Brodit holder is great, had it not been for my steering wheel, i would have access to the full keypad and be able to txt. having said that, i can still sms and dial numbers etc but the end few letters does require stretching which is not advisable while driving!
thats it really.. i can get pics if anyone wants to see?
oh... it came with a car charger built in. although it does its job, it does it badly! charging = no probs but the cable is just far too short! it really does stretch across and at times the charger pops out. also, it can come in the way of the gear stick so again, not practical. i am thinking of wiring it directly to the battery and hiding the wires but thats if i decide to do that to the tomtom too!
anyway thats it for me...
I was looking at the brodit site, brodit.se i think it is, and they have a different site for US customers. I head over to the US site and they don't offer the holder for the wizard that charges it. On the brodit.se site they have 3 different ones. One for a cig lighter, one that u wire to the batter, and another which you wire to the batt as well but its a molex connection(beats me what that is) well i'm just bummed i couldn't get the one that charges. I think i should email them and see what they say. Also the reason i'm looking for a holder is because i'm planning on getting the new parrot car handsfree kit with gps.
I did not know about the brodit one that is directly wired to the battery
i was considering doing this manually because it just doesnt look right having cables going half way across the interior of the car
doing this with my tomtom too but now that you mention that something is already available, might just give me a chance to upgrade my kit.
only thing i find with the brodit is i guess with all things, its made in bulk and i find my proclip tends to "pop out" when using the wizard
its not a risk as the main bit is still in the side of the vent but the top support pops out which gives it a loose feeling
do let me know how you get on with yours
I am using a horizontal brodit holder for my Wizard.
It has a curled lead with a mini-usb connector to charge the device.
I managed to feed the lead (and plug) thru the vent and insiode the dashboard I made a fixed 12V connection.
I dont use a proclip, but a steel (spray painted black) home made dashmount wich i derived from the steel MTU dashmount (see http://www.mtu.no/english/DashMount/DashMount.htm for detailed desciptions)
I found this, looks intresting.
I think i would get a proclip but I need an alternate method for a holder. Proclip only lets me put in 2 places in my Scion tC and they are bad locations.

Cingular 8125
FYI, for anyone with a Cingular 8125, the Bordit/ProClip vertical holders for the Wizard are not compatible with the 8125.
I have been anxiously watching the ProClip website for the powered Wizard holder (which was supposed to be in early this week). However, the more I looked, the more I was afraid the square corners of the 8125 wouldn't fit in the holder. So I shot ProClip an e-mail to ask if the 8125 would sit properly on the charger. To my dismay, I saw the regular vertical holder got yanked from the 8125 listing a few hours later. That night I got this response from ProClip:
We where able to test it today and the Vertical holder does not fit due to the horzontal thing on the back of the lower part of the phone. We are adjusting the hoder and expect it to be available within a couple of weeks.

Funny, I was worried about the boxy corners, but it seems possibly the pad across the back is the culprit (that's the only horizontal thing I see). Must keep it from sliding down past the back part of the holder, in which case I think the corners are still going to be a problem. They look like they curve inward to cradle the rounder Wizard body.
Oh well...thanks to my curiosity and big mouth, I'll have to wait many more weeks before I can properly mount my boxy Wizard. But I guess that's slightly better than buying a product that wouldn't work. <sigh>

CRAP! I already ordered and paid for one of these, while it was listed as being compatible with the Dopod 838.
I just went to www.proclipusa.com and it still shows the holder as being compatible with the 8125?

Hmmmm...so it is. I know it wasn't there Mon, Tues, & Wed. Maybe they fixed the problem or maybe there wasn't a problem after all. (Or maybe now they're just including a metal file with the holder so you can remove the horizontal thing from your Wizard.)
Sorry...didn't mean to panic you. Let me know how it turns out. I'm still waiting on the powered version myself, but I'll be happy to hear from someone who has the vertical holder and the boxy Wizard. (I still don't understand how it can hold the round Wizards and still fit our square Wizards.)

Mine is supposed to be delivered on Monday. I will let you know if it works or not as soon as I get it.
ive just checked the release notes I get from Brodit, and it never mentioned compatability with the 8125 cingular model, so where 'proclip-usa' have got that info from I dont know, might be a mistake on their site, as mentioned in previous post.
Ive just had a look at the images for the cingular 8125 (not a UK device) and compared against my stock of the Brodit codes 968650/655 and i cant see it fitting, certainly not without modification. Sorry guys, hope you get it sorted. PS Most Brodit team are at CeBit in Germany over the next few days and into next week, so may take a bit longer to resolve i suspect.
Hope that helps,
Bryson
Believe it or not, my Proclip holder came today! It fits like a champ with my Cingular 8125. The rubber piece on the back gives you some resistance when you slide it in and out, but the fit is good.
If you remove the battery cover (and thus the rubber piece on the back) the phone slides right in and out smoothly, though the fit is no different.
Give me a few minutes and I'll take a picture.
Good news then it seems! Look forward to the pictues.
Here are a few pictures of the phone in the holder. I didn't like the location of the proclip vehicle mount, so I ordered one from another supplier that should be here next week (still AMPS-so it'll work). I'll take a few pictures of the setup in the car when that comes in.
(btw bryson-thanks for taking the time to help)

hi SuperDodge!
looks a pretty good fit, must confess i was surprised (and concerned!) to see any brodit holder or proclip product released to market without extensive R&D as that is why they remain the best at what they do.
I notice you have the passive (non charging version) code 848650 if that fits then so will the UK versions of the Active (cig charging) version code 968650. This is known in the UK as the xda mini s or Wizard/K-Jam.
If anyone needs any I have them in stock, and shipping to the USA takes approx 5-7 days, and costs £5.99 GBPounds on top of the cradle at £37.99 (so total price £43.98 GBPounds or $75.93)
If you need any help or advice, please feel free to drop me a line ok,
Thanks again
Bryson
Just thought I'd sing Brysons praises a little.
I ordered a proclip and active holder from his website for my wizard on Sunday and it arrived today (Tuesday).
All installed now and is a really good fit. Just what I was looking for. I emailed with a few questions first and he was really helpful and got back to me nice and quick. I ordered previosuly from a US site and was told I'd have to wait about six weeks!
... and no I don't work for him or anything!
Also... anyone know how many wires are internal to a cig lighter cable. I'm debating cutting the end off and wiring it directly to the car. Was thinking of seperating it out and using some "scotch locks?" to crimp it onto the wiring behind the radio. Good/bad idea???
SuperDodge, thanks for the pics. I'm jealous! So, exactly how tight is the fit with the rubber piece? I plan using it everytime I get in/out my vehicle, which is several times a day. Hate to have it rubbing day after day until eventually the rubber just falls off.
Shame that proclipusa.com still doesn't have any active versions for the Wizard. Wonder what the hold up is? At least Bryson can get it to us. BTW, the proclipusa.com quoted me $69.99 for 968650 and $79.99 for 968655. Of course, they also told me they'd be in early last week.

Cigarette lighters have 2 wires, a red 12V and a black ground. Meanwhile, USB connectors are 5V, so you can't just cut the wire and patch it in. Also, the cable might actually contain 4 or 5 wires (one for each lead in the 5-pin mini USB connector), so you'd have to figure out which ones to use. Unless he says different, I assume for edsub's fixed connection mentioned above, either he has a 978650, which has the 12V wires instead of a cigarette plug, or he installed a cigarette socket somewhere under his dash.
I took the latter approach for my current charger setup. I wired a $10 Target 3-socket adapter directly to my internal fusebox with some Littlefuse "Add-A-Circuit". The adapter is tucked away nicely under my dash (but still accessible) and the 3 sockets give a permanent home for my various car chargers. I even wired 2 of the sockets to be switchable to "always-on" so I could leave my devices charging when the car was off. I was working on a detailed How-To with lots of pictures to post to a car forum, but never finished the doc. Unless you happen to own a Honda Element, some of it won't apply specifically to you, but it'll give you the idea of what to do. If you're interested, let me know and I'll add it to my lengthy todo list.

Thanks for the info.
I have a spare mini usb to cig lighter cable so will have a play with that first. As you say it should be just a case of identifying the correct positive and negative connections. A project for this weekend I think!...

Whoa, Andy! Let me emphasize one point. The cigarette plug itself has circuitry inside of it to convert the 12V to 5V. The wires coming out of plug and going to the USB plug only carry 5V and your phone is expecting only 5V. If you cut the wires and splice the 5V onto 12V you will fry your phone! I failed Electrical Engineering in college, but I at least learned that much.
I don't want to get too far off-topic here (these really aren't even the forums to discuss this), so let me just say that it really is a lot easier to hang an extra socket under the dash. (1) The wiring to your car's 12V and ground is the same, (2) the conversion to 5V is handled by your adapter, (3) you don't have to destroy any adapters, and (4) you can use the socket for anything, not just your phone. Maybe I should really finish up that How-To doc to show you how easy it is install extra sockets...
--Bennett
Sorry didn't go into as much detail as I should have!!
Wasn't for a minute going to just connect it up to the 12v on the car. Just use and old cable and take a look to see what its made up of (more for curiosity). Will go for the extra socket idea.. but need to find one at the weekend.
Thanks for the advice though!

I'm very much hoping that this (which I also ordered, already received, and works great so I'll probably be getting another one for my desk) will fit into it, and I'm pretty sure it will:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F6SPYJS/
If not, I'll just order the official LG charger to fit in the dock. It's not much more expensive.
Also, check out the Car Dock Thread. There is some discussion of wireless docks in there:

I did a diy a while back (couldn't justify spending 50+ on one) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2537590
Still working perfectly to this date.

iBolt qi wireless charging dock build
Here's my build post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=49542102&postcount=224
This is a copy of the post I did for the same topic when I had a Nexus 4 about 9 months back. I also used this setup for my Galaxy S4 and now I'm using it for my Note 3.
I just finished installing my Smart Fit2 (model TCD-C800P). There are plenty of pictures of it and a link to order on the thread for LG WCP-300, but I mounted it on a different base. It was designed to hold the WCP-300 Qi charger, but works fine just as a mount with no charger, and is inexpensive. I paid $19.95 including shipping and I think it's a few bucks less right now.
The base I used is a 17mm ball adapter on a PanaVise vehicle specific mount that fastens to the dash frame behind the radio trim. That part took about 10 minutes to install and used the existing radio screws/holes. The metal bracket fits without any noticeable gap in the trim. I picked this method to keep the phone in easy reach, out of the windshield, and as a bonus it's where I can aim an air vent at it if the charger starts to warm the phone up too much.
If you want to do this in your car you can save from 5 to 10 dollars by looking up your dash bracket on the PanaVise web site, then order it through Amazon.
The WCP-300 charger is $40 from a Verizon store or from their web site, shipping is free.
Not only did the pictures disappear, but when I COPIED the original post the XDA app evidently deleted the entire original post, and the app won't let me insert a new picture, I think they want me to buy the premium app.
Just use your imagination.

Granted it has been 6 weeks or so since I looked, but back in October or November the supply of the SmartFit2 dried up. They went from >$20 to <$100. Great concept, but the dock has been unavailable.
UPDATE: Just Googled this, and I guess a supply must have been located in Korea. Available on ebay: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_nkw=LG+WCP-300+Smart+Fit2&_sop=15
There is a great youtube video on how to use the inexpensive koolpuck in place of the more expensive one from LG: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTNAPp2UkkI
In the end it makes a nice clean wireless charging car dock.

Ebay was where I found the Smart Fit dock, and mine finally arrived from Korea a couple of days ago (it took just under 3 weeks to reach me here in the US). The Power Bot charger I bought ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F6SPYJS ) fits perfectly, and it was clearly designed to do so. The dock seems pretty sturdy and holds the phone securely. The Note's size makes it a little awkward to reach the release button, but I've almost gotten the hang of releasing the phone with one hand without dropping it.
Incidentally, that charger appears to be a generic model sold under a number of names, including Power Bot, MuchBuy, DigiYes, and Koolpuck. The unit and packaging look to be identical, whichever name it is sold under. I haven't had any problems with it and now that mine is installed in my car, I'll be buying another one for my desk.

The Air Dock: What works with it for you?

Hey everyone,
Just received my Air Dock in the mail and I've had mixed results using my Galaxy Note 3 with it. So rather than buying more cases and QI adapters, throwing stuff at the wall hoping something sticks, I thought we could all band together to find the best setup. This should be a thread for people to post their experiences and post links to the cases and wireless charging adapters they are using with the Air Dock and their GN3.
For those of you unfamiliar with the Air Dock, it's a new Indiegogo backed vehicle mount that employs nano-suction and QI wireless charging. It essentially uses a bunch of tiny suction cups (and some magnets apparently) to bond to your phone with out needing any kinds of harnesses or clips. The only issue seems to be that this tech requires some specific stuff to function well. The back of the phone needs to be high gloss plastic for it to stick well and it can't be too thick (i think .8mm is the max for it to still charge). For phones with matte backs (like the Nexus 5) magnets are an option.
Here is the link to the website and plenty of videos and pictures for those who don't know about it: TheAirDock.com
Ok, so I'll start with my setup and experience and hopefully others will follow along to find the best combination of accessories to get the most out of this dock.
Phone: Black Galaxy Note 3 (Verizon)
-I tried it on the dock with no case and while it holds, I'm not very confident in it. I think it may be the texture of the soft touch back. Also there seems to be magnets in it, which I'm not sure there were supposed to be but they are responding to something in the phone
Case: Black Cruzerlite Hybrid Case for Samsung Galaxy Note 3
-Same deal, it sticks to it but it's not inspiring confidence. It's not a high gloss back, so that's probably the issue (bought it well before the Air Dock). The dock also comes with a magnet sticker to place between the case and phone, and that helps but I haven't been able to get it to register a charge at all with the case on.
QI adapter: Wireless Qi Power Receiver Car Charger NFC For Samsung Note 3 N9000 N9005 BC279
-I think this is the part that has created the biggest issue. It's only ever recognized the charger a handful of times, with and without the back cover on. And even when it recognizes it, it just flashes the "now wireless charging" dealy and then goes back to discharging immediately. I know that the adapter works because it charges fine on my desktop QI charging pad.

Not exactly. If i put it on there with no case and like 15 degrees of back lean it holds decently. The backplate isn't as glossy as it needs to be to hold securely though. It's capable of it, they've shown it holding the various Nexus tablets.
That's kind of what this thread is about, trying to find out the best combination of accessories to make this thing work correctly.

i'm still waiting on my airdock, but regarding the QI receiver insert charging/discharging deal, have you tried to rotate the airdock 90 degrees? I've ran across QI chargers where orientation matters.

Hmm. I think that's worth a shot. The dock is weird in that the ball joint faces a specific direction, which is different than the prototypes I saw. And if what you say is true, mounting it on the windshield would make the dock upside down. I'll give that a go when I go to my car in the AM.

an easier way is to not move the dock, and just rotate your phone 90 degrees (vertical vs. horizontal), and see if that helps with the wireless charging.

The receiver you have is not a very good one, its rather weak, i had to add another ferrite or flexi magnet to it so that most of my other transmitter can detect it, but if nfc is a must, you have no choice.

Good to know. NFC isn't a must so could you recommend a better QI adapter for the thread?

Would also like to report back on the docks performance today. I had my phone on it (in the case) all day with just a small amount of back lean. It held strong on the drive to and from bwork. I also went for some drinks after work and it held strong to and from along a fairly bumpy road. I still want to find a glossy back case but my confidence is growing in the nano suction as is.
I also wanted to report that I put my old Galaxy S1 in it (only phone I have with a glossy back) and it held just like it does in the videos.

Hi Guys,
Just to know if I'm the only one experiencing difficulties with my airdock :
I received my items 2 days ago (I have 2 as a friend also ordered one) and test them with 2 Nexus 4 :
Concerning the suction, it's definitily very very good with the N4 and no case, clearly, no risk to have the phone fall while driving !
So, that was the good news ...
The bad one is that the charging is very unreliable on both airdock pads, but with differents effects :
On the first one, it's very difficult for it to be seen charging by the phone, but when it does, it work for several minutes ... and stop working without apparent reasons ...
On the second one, I experiment the same kind of symptoms as described in the first post : the wireless charging is only seen by the phone for something like 1/2s, and then it's off ...
That's quite a disppointment as otherwise, it holds the phone just fine in the car and I found it very convenient. I hope I was just unlucky with mines, or maybe they suffer from transport (the package shows no evidence of it yet ...).
I contacted Greg, the guy from theAirdock.com to have his advices on the matter, but no answer so far ... I was wondering if I'm the only experimenting those issues ?

You're not the only one, I had similar issues with my Note 3 (actually why I started this thread). I ended up contacting Greg as well and he recommended I purchase a Qi adapter from their site, which did make it function much more reliably. It's acceptable in my opinion at this point but I'm still not 100% sure it's going to charge or stay charging anytime I set it on the AirDock.
Bad news is, my solution isn't really an option with the N4 since (i believe) the wireless charging is built in. I do believe that the Qi charger in the AirDock is generally weak though since I tried about 3 different Qi adapters before finally buying the one from the AirDock site that worked. Otherwise it would do exactly what yours is doing (got both of the things you described with different adapters). I would say try to exchange your docks.
Something that works for me sometimes if it doesn't start charging right away is to unplug the USB cable from the lighter socket side and plug it back in. Also be sure that you are plugged into the 2.1A socket that it comes with, as i found it won't work with the standard 1A plugs most people have laying around.
I really love the concept of the AirDock and I'm glad I backed it but the build quality is certainly suspect. Mine is starting to fall apart after only a few months (the suction pad part is starting to separate from the housing, i can only assume because of how the phone has to be pulled to remove). I think this is par for the course with beta hardware though. Fortunately, customer service was very accommodating in my experience. Hope you're as fortunate.
Yep, actually, I found the thread on the N5 forum after I put my post here. And there indeed seems to be a few complaints with it
I had ne feedback from Greg sincemy email yesterday, but I figure they may be quite busy those days as many people seems to be receiving them.
Well, I hope he will provide a solution, because, for one of the two, with the same symptoms as yours, I can believe it's a problem with positionning, but for the other, the phone start charging for a few minutes and, without it moving, stops ... To me it sounds more like a loose contact somewhere inside the airdock ...
Well, wait'n see, they say ...
I will keep you posted of Greg's answer ..
Any word on how this works with the Note 3's stock "leather" textured back? Is a case required for it to stay?
Also, has anybody tried it with the Samsung brand wireless charger cover? The Air Dock website suggests that the Samsung brand cover is the best wireless charger receiver available; even better than the ones that Air Dock sells.
do you use the Magnetic Sticker?
For the original poster, how did things work out for you in the end? I have a Nexus 5 and it works extremely well with the AirDock because of the smooth back and also because of the magnets. I'm thinking of going to the Note 4. On the AirDock site it does say the textured back of the Note may not stick too well so they recommend using the magnetic sticker. I have one that come with my AirDock and can't imagine putting that on the back of the phone case. I expect it would be pretty damn ugly.

I thought for sure I had already posted this response. I ended up getting an AirDock and the OEM Samsung Wireless charging cover for my Note 3. It's been a good setup. I'm not using the ugly sticker. The magnets in the AirDock seem to hold on to some metal in the wireless cover. It isn't as good as a smooth backed device, but it works for the most part. I'm glad I bought it.
That's good to know. Thanks for replying. One way to get a smoother back and increase the adhesion on the AirDock while avoiding the thickness of a case is to get a vinyl wrap although I'm not sure how they would go with the Samsung wireless back since it looks like the shape especially around the camera is slightly different. I have a D-Brand skin on my Nexus 5 and I really love it and it makes the back even smoother. I just got a Note 4 yesterday and have ordered a third-party Qi receiver coil so I'll see how that goes first. Looks like SlickWraps has some nice vinyl skins for the Note 3 and 4.
Also want to report that yesterday I tried my Note 4 with the AirDock using the standard back. At first it did not adhere at all. However I noticed that surface of my AirDock charging pad was pretty dusty. For my Nexus 5 I had been relying mostly on the magnets to hold the phone there. So I cleaned the AirDock with a bit of water as they recommend and the Note 4 holds very securely now. I think if I add a vinyl skin or a very thin case I think it would be even more secure.

Add Qi Wireless Charging + NFC ~$14

So like many others I'm sure I thought the Verizon LG G3 included wireless charging. So I bought my Qi charger and put my phone on it only to find out it wouldn't work. I dug a bit deeper into the subject and found someone who had debunked the idea of Verizon leaving the wireless charging feature in the phone.
If you didn't know it, the Verizon LG G3 does not include Qi (or any) wireless charging. I found a replacement for the sticker in the back cover. I've seen others who bought the back cover and sticker for just a bit more aftermarket. But if you want to keep your shinny nice LG back cover this is for you. I bought two and are working great. (have not tested NFC functionality but the pin outs are there and have no reason to think that it doesn't work.
Here is the link. Shipping was decent and quite fast (faster than there projected time frame) I was happy with the purchase and can now Qi the LG G3!

I noticed that the phone gets little warm where you sit it on the Qi Charger but probably normal???
I ordered the back from the same site, the Verizon Black Back cover.
Got it today and nothing, but the back contacts look nothing like the site shows I have attached a photo. Looks like the contacts are not lining up correctly or are not raised enough to meet the back of the phone.
Have emailed the company, hopefully they will make it right.

Thanks for this.. I have been looking, reading reviews on Amazon and Ebay. There's two things that bother me about this. This is a flagship, premium phone, one of the best in my opinion. Yesterday, I went to Verizon to see if I could buy one there. 27.99 for the battery door, then 27.99 for the Qi Charger. thats over 50 bucks for something I ordered here for 27.99.. First off, why wasn't this on the phone originally? Secondly, why is Verizon trying to break the bank on something that should have already been standard on the phone? Sadly, I know the answer to the 2nd question. End rant here
Really though, I'm on XDA atleast 5 times a day and really never look at Accessories. Thanks for the great advice!

I bought 2 of these. Installed the sticker without issue. The charging pad lights up, the phone says it is being wirelessly charged, but it is not. The percentage is actually going down while it says it is charging. Going to try a different charger tonight, but it does the same thing plugged into a computer.
As another poster said the NFC works fine the qi however does not work stock.
Also, I have had a really bad experience with those stickers. I probably bought about 5 and none of them worked. Returned them and received replacements and they still didn't work so, I went ahead and bought a battery door with the nfc and qi functionality built in and that has worked for me. Although the NFC is seemingly not as responsive as it was with the stock back.
If you want to drop some money the slimguard case is pretty cool and includes both, 320 is the US version. Mine took a month to get here. I was lucky with sticker on original back plate but it was a bulky sticker and seemed like back plate barely went back on. Adding a case didn't give the best qi charge rate so I just got slimguard
Zerolemon and NFC/QI stickers
Has anyone had any luck with modding/retro-fitting the zerolemon rugged case/extended battery (http://www.amazon.com/Warranty-Zero..._1_6?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1426945301&sr=1-6) with one of the Qi stickers? I'm not looking for the wireless charging as much as I am the NFC functionality as the case doesn't have pin-outs for it.
Yes, I have NFC and qi charging working fine with the Zerolemon case & 9000mah battery. I just carefully lined up the connections & affixed the connections part of the sticker to the phone with tape. Then put a small piece of foam on top of the connections to put pressure on the connections when the back cover parts are installed. I put in the battery & laid the coil part of the sticker over the battery. I then snapped the plastic back with the battery cutout carefully over both the battery & the sticker being aware not to break the wires between the connections & the coil when pinching them between the plastic & the top of the battery. A bit of a hack, but as long as you don't remove your battery that often it should hold up just fine.

Excellent, thank you! I've ordered the stickers and will attempt it soon!
How long does it take for a full charge wirelessly?
Well, I actually don't know exactly because I rarely drain the 9000mah battery all the way down, lol. Under normal use for me, I get down to 50-60% remaining be EOD and 6-7 hours on my Powerbot qi charger has it at full charge when I wake up. What I'd say is that I feel this charges nearly, if not just, as fast as it does plugged into a wall outlet. But, it does depend on the output of the charger/power adapter you are using so YMMV. Good luck putting it all together. This is my first qi charging setup and I am definitely loving not having to plug in as the Zerolemon case with it's added bulk and cover over the charging port made plugging in a tedious task.

What is a great qi charging pad?

Hey guys since the N6 is qi compatible and i also have the moto 360, want to know from anyone with experience of owning or playing with one, what is a great qi charging pad.
I use the Nokia DT-900 for my G2 and N7. It works really well.

I've been using the TYLT VU for a year with my N5, it is the single greatest smartphone accessory I've ever purchased. It's more expensive than most other QI charging pads, but it's worth every penny.

The tylt is nice but I wonder how fast it will charge the nexus or should I wait to see if someone or motorola brings out a wireless charger aimed at rapid charging, if not then the tylt is top on the list.
The Tylt has been known to have some overheating issues in the past. They may have been fixed, and not everyone experiences it, but I'd be careful there. I have the DT-910, which is the upright version of the DT-900, and it's fantastic. I'm not sure it will work with the much taller N6 though. There's always the Nexus Charger, of course, or the Samsung charger.
I also have a Tylt VU charger that I use with my Nexus 4 (first batch model) which considering how the Qi coil was with the first batch models its quite an achievement that the VU works so well with my phone!
Also considering that the VU holds the device at an angle and not on a flat surface, it might be able to handle the Nexus 6 better with its curved back compared to most other chargers which might prove troublesome.
I bought an LG WCP-300 (Amazon Link) back when I got my Nexus 4 and have been using it with my N5 as well. It works fairly well with the N5, so I hope that it works OK with the Nexus 6. The only thing I've noticed with the N5 is that the phone covers the charging LED on the charger, so if I move the phone in the middle of the night it's hard to see when the LED starts blinking again. This is only going to get worse with the N6 due to the size.

+1 for the WCP. I bought it awhile back and it works fine with the N4. You should be able to grab it a lil cheaper than the link though
The Anker Ultra-Slim Qi-Enabled Wireless Charging Pad looks promising.
Great price and low-profile.

Do the charging pads work even if the phone has skin or case on? I've never used one before so wondering

It's fine as long as it's not ridiculously thick. But metal cases, might not work so great...
I have a LG 300,a Anker square pad and a Power Bot. The Power Bot was only $12 and I think its the best of the one's I have

I've had the TYLT VU since it came out and not once have I had an overheating issue, but I do know that some people did. It was caused by misalignment of the coils based on the way people were placing their Nexus 5's on the charger. I think if you slid the phone down on it you were at risk, but if you placed the bottom of the phone on it first and tilted it back into place, you were safe. I know TYLT was aware of it because they put out an updated guide. I'm also fairly certain they altered the design a bit to mitigate the issue.

It works with TPU cases and even some thicker ones like the Magpul Field case.

An extra thick case will cause some issues. My G3 with a Supcase Premium Hybrid on it works, but I have to be more careful about positioning than I do without it, or with a thinner one like a TPU. Anything with metal should be avoided; they will both interfere with the charge plate, and possibly cause heat issues - the small metal plate I had in my Nexus 5 for my magnetic car mount would get very warm when on the charger - to be safe I pulled the phone out of the TPU case when I charged it at night.
As far as the Tylt Vu, I love mine. I have had no issues with the charger itself overheating, but it has had some issues with various configurations. My first Qi device was a Nokia 930, and it got VERY warm while charging - to the point where it would sometimes overheat and reboot in the middle of the night. I replaced it with a Nexus 5, and other than what I stated above, it worked perfectly with no heat problems. My current LG G3 works without issues as well, although positioning can get a little trickier because the receive coil is so low down on the back of the phone; I have to make sure I push the bottom against the charger base when I set it on it at night, or it will occasionally send a "low charge" message and wake up the screen - especially with the case on the device.
I will note the the Tylt Vu has a clone called the Itien A6 that is much cheaper, and from all accounts works as well as its more expensive cousin. If the Tylt version is too expensive for you, you may want to look in that direction.

My concern with the Tylt (and in fact all the QI chargers) is that the back of the Nexus 6 is curved. Will it rest naturally so that the coil is against the pad? Or will it need a specially shaped charging pad to ensure that it works.

The charge coils work within a CM or so of each other, so the curve should not be an issue. It may exasperate the thick case issue mentioned above, but it should be OK for the most part. The curve will be more of an issue for things like magnetic car mounts.

I have my LG G2 in an Otterbox Defender Series case and have no problems at all.

The further the coils are from the phone, (whether because of curved back or case), the more resistance, the more heat, the more battery wear. It is the physics of energy. No way around it. Even Qi with a straight back and no case will offer more resistance/heat/battery wear than corded charging.
This is on sale at the moment.

Wow, that thing is seriously overpriced for a single coil charger (at regular price, it's about right at $20).
