UMS on Android 4.3 gives "Please insert disk into removable disk" - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
When I updated my S3 to 4.3 from 4.1.2, it was terrible. It was very laggy, my screen didn't show when pressing the Power Button or the Home Button, and I thought that resetting to factory might fix it. Well, I was so desperate to make my phone work better that I didn't realize that all my files were on the internal storage, I don't have an SD Card. So, I've lost everything.
Now, I'm trying to recover some photos, but I can't connect my phone as USB mass storage to use a recovery soft on Windows 8. I rooted my phone, installed USB Mass Storage Enabler app, but it shows two drives (H: and I, but I can't access those. It gives me "Please insert a disk into Removable Drive (LETTER"
Please help, I did everything I found on forums, but still nothing. Those files might be lost, but now I have another battle.. Making my phone available in Mass Storage.
And by the way, it still works terrible with 4.3. Hate it so much!

Have you installed USB drivers ???
Have you read the stickied storage/ recovery thread ??

Unfortunately I think USB Mass Storage in the way it is implemented in 4.x for the moment can only share the external SD, the internal one is never visible.
IMHO the only approach to recover "something" is to get an external microSD larger than the internal partition and create a block copy (with dd under adb in CWM/Philz recovery for instance) of the entire "internal SD" partition - that one will be an EXT4 (Linux) partition) and there is a very, very small chance that you might recover some stuff from it (I doubt but who knows).

Yes, i have the Samsung USB Driver for mobile phone (1.5.29.0)
No, didn't read the storage/recovery thread.

Oh well...
Such error happens if transfer breaks unexpectedly. Think what file did you send lastly and delete it, it should fix your issue.
If you can't remember or it did not, formatting your external sd card will fix it for sure.

Ah, you're talking about internal one.
Well, then your magic program doesn't work properly. Perhaps you could try boeffla kernel and it's UMS.

[Q] Internal storage formatting itself after reboot?

Every now and again when I reboot the phone, my Internal Storage seems to be formatted. It's really starting to become a nuisance. I am on rooted on U4_2.1.1 - anyone else experiencing this issue?
Self bump...I found that if I reboot the phone in adb (using the reboot command) it formats my internal storage almost every time. I'm trying to isolate other causes while I am at it...
Bump, I also have this issue and it is extremely frustrating!!!
This happened to me when I rooted mine yesterday too, and this is my first post yay.

Hi,
Do a full format in Windows. Connect the phone in use storage mode to a pc, right click on the drive and select format, default settings, turn off quick format.
This happens when running Gingerbreak to root your phone.
Cheers!
So I backed up everything and am now formatting it but did I do something wrong wail using gingerbreak because I saw no where this could happen, just want to know what I did wrong.
Adam
hi,
This is what I am guessing happens: In order to get root, Gingerbreak hacks into the volume daemon (the android bit that knows about inserting and removing sdcards). So you get root but it's like you pulled the plug on your computer while your hard drive was accessing data, you need to do a full format to avoid glitches. At boot android checks volumes to make sure they are not corrupt, that they are 'checked' that they are fully synced and closed out before the power was turned off. If there are any problems, either a repair is attempted or a format is done, depending on the phone/firmware. So, after using Gingerbreak to root, there are some issues with the format of the internal memory, once you start filling it up, you get errors when it runs across a bad patch of the format. So, even though it may look like the drive has been formatted and empty, you still need to do a full format from a pc to clean up the mess. I would recommend both the internal memory and any external sd-cards be formatted properly afterward.
You'd need to talk to the author(s) of Gingerbreak to get more of a breakdown on what happens.
Cheers!
Atrix internal storage format after boot
I've the same problem using Atrix when reboot...
The internal storage will format after every reboot...
And my Atrix is new phone, that not root before...
I've try to format storage within phone format tool.
It success to stop the format after reboot.
But, I when put the sdcard into the phone, the reboot will format the phone, again...
Anyone can help////
wow thanks for the break down man really appreciate it.

I have this problem, but cannot get the computer to see the phone as drives to format. Is there any other way of doing this?

Do you have it set to Mass Storage under USB Settings when you have it connected?
Do you have the proper drivers installed?
I had this problem too. But even trying full format using pc, it still wouldn't help. I even did a full wipe on my whole phone.

[Q] USB Storage Problem

Just turned on my phone after the exam today and normally it justs checks the usb storage as usual but now it's stuck on checking the usb storage, been like this for hours and I've tried restating the phone but same thing.
As a result of this I can't access anything. It's just stuck on (preparing usb storage -checking for errors)
What to do? Cheers
try - remove your external SD card and switch on the phone,
Just tried that an hour ago. It's something to do with internal sd card pretty sure.
Any other suggestions?
cwm format emmc or sdcard [depends on version of cwm] remove external sd card to be safe.
Might have to do that unfortunately

Yeah, but now it just says that, whatever I mentioned in the OP.
Keeps doing that and can't access gallery, music, or can't be detected on PC.
Don't know how it happened :/

ps. does exist an application that cancel all unused application files in the sdcard? thanks again.
1 and 3 sound like a bad sd card or card reader in the phone. The rest sound like an OS bug, which a factory reset should hopefully clear up.

What do you mean "cancel?"
thanks for the answer,
i guess is the sd card, il try a factory reset. the new sd card that caused problem is a samsung 16 gb cas 6, i thoght it was good.

Well, normally when you connect the USB cable and choose to connect the USB storage then the SD card becomes unavailable to the phone but the computer can then access it. Both the computer and the phone cannot access the SD card at the same time... I will spare you the technical reasons but you should know that this is normal. After you are done copying files with the computer then you must turn off this USB storage mode so the phone can access the SD card again and then it will see all your music and pictures again (all these are stored on your card by default).
This should all be fixed OK by a reboot of the phone though in any case. Are you sure you rebooted the phone completely? maybe you should try to remove the battery once?
If you've done all that then you can try to repair the SD card by taking it out of the phone and using micro sd to SDHC adapter and inserting it directly into a computer then using windows to run a chkdsk on it.
hi,
i've done all you said properly, you know the problem came out because there was a differente behavior than in the past.
i remove securely the phone from pc and then is not accessible,
i didn't tried to chdsk the sdcard i'll try, but it sounded strange to me because its brand new.
i also tried to contact htc , they said " try to reboot, or try to remove the battery and the sd and start the phone again, the problem wasnt gone.
thanks for the advice.

Well if it's just gotten corrupted then you can just reformat the sd card. You'll want to backup all your data first so if you can't do that from the USB connection to the PC then you'll need to insert it directly into a pc. Once you've formatted it you can put your backed up data back on the card and put it back in the phone and after a while it will find your mp3s again. If it's truly a bad sd card then the reformat won't help.
Do you have another sdcard? The one that came with the phone or any other? Try putting some mp3s and photos on it and then put that in your phone. If your phone recognizes the photos and mp3s then maybe your current sdcard is the problem. And can you tell the the format of your sdcard? Is it NTFS or exFAT or FAT32? If it is UHS-1 card there is a good chance that it is in exFAT. To make it work on Evo 3d, convert it to FAT32 .

Samsung Galaxy GT-I9100 Showing Internal and External memory Write protected

Hi Friends,
Since last 2 weeks I am facing below mentioned issues.
1. Gallery not opening (Showing as internal memory full though 2GB memory is free.)
2. Internal and External Memory has become write protected (Can't Delete anything from internal as well as external storage)
3. On Restart I can access gallery for some 10min but after after that again it becomes inaccessible.
4. Even after Restart during that 10min period I can't even delete data from phone.
5. When I try to connect the phone to PC to delete some stuff it displays notice as memory is write protected.
6. All things related to Gallery like media doesnt download also If I click pic from camera I can't see the image clicked.
I tried Factory Restore, clear cache, *#9900#, all possible things but it is not helping it.
Phone is Not Rooted and running on Jelly bean 4.1.2
Please help me out i am really frustated with this issue.
Thanks in advance.
When I faced that issue I had to mount it as USB mass storage to my PC and do a full format of internal/external storage. Before that backup your data.

Mount your device as USB mass storage to PC and do a full format of internal/external storage. Before that backup your data.
USB mass storage can be activated by enabling USB debugging at developer options.
once you connect as USB mass storage, your phone will give you a notification to connect it to PC for allowing file transfers. When you do that, in the USB mass storage window, the android icon turns orange from green. In your PC, your internal and external sdcards will appear as 2 separate drives. Right click on one of them, and click format. Do a full format (not a quick format). keep the filesystem as FAT32. Do it for both internal and external. It takes a while for full format, so do not disconnect in between.
Now copy the data back to your internal/external sdcards from your backup. You will have access to write in both the memories now.
Thats it.

[Q] Factory Reset S3 Needing Internal Memory File Recovery

Please can anyone offer some simple answers and advice for me and my situation
Due to poor advice I optioned to get over a "Damaged Memory" screen by choosing the 'Reset' button, the advice said all files could then be recovered by various 'recovery software tools' available. Now I find that my version of Android has no option to float the 'internal' memory to a PC as 'removable storage' only the irritating MTP transfer thing!
So my question is...
Is there any simple way to enable UMS for the INTERNAL drive on the phone?
BTW I should say I have tried a UMS re-enabling apk but this only makes good UMS for EXTERNAL drives, NOT INTERNAL.
The only thing I can I think of is to take the firmware back to before the 'wizards' at Samsung removed the UMS option, though to be honest I don't know if the internal drive was ever mountable in Windows as a 'removable drive'.
FYI My device is not rooted.....yet!
Thanks
Steve
PS: I did try the DR.Fone for Android recovery software, which seems perfect but it couldn't connect via UMS so found nothing.
Internal is an emulated memory, cannot be mounted as UMS regardless of root.

Sorry I need to be completely clear here......
Are you saying there is ABSOLUTELY no way of recovering ANY data from the factory reset INTERNAL memory?
It is possible to dump the entire partition to your pc, go search and read those who have tried.
Trying to find the files afterward is like trying to unscramble eggs, but software on your pc would be able to access the partition at least.
