One Max Experience ? - HTC One Max

Hey guys im interested in the Htc One Max. Ive watched all the reviews online it see it gets alot of negative reviews due to the not upgraded specs from the original one. My question is it really worth buying and how is it overall as far as display, performance, and multi tasking? I dont really trust the youtube reviewers opinions. Thx in advance for any insight

Well I wanted a phablet... I had the GS III.. I got sick of the lag in touchwiz. Now i understand why Samsung uses the latest specs and most RAM. Touchwiz is really a resource hog.
So i gave up on the note 3. I bought the LG G2 while I waited for one max on verizon.
So yesterday afterwork i went to verizon and got the max on the device payment plan(NOT EDGE).
The phone is luxurious. No lag at all. I love sense.
Android 4.3 and sense 5.5 work amazing together.
The display is amazing. SLCD performs better than AMOLED.
Snapdragon 600 or Snapdragon 800 are just ploys. I had the lg g2 for a month. Believe me i don't notice any difference between the 2 in performance or lag.

I love it, i switched from Samsung with higher specs. Htc has provided text reflow from the beginning and right now HTC is the only one that is still providing it. With screen as big it is essential when you are browsing on your phone. Others provide solutions where you have to click on increase Text size. White on this device you just pinch zoom and it auto wraps. There is one feature I miss from Samsung and that is Hardware Home button, its handy when you want to wake up phone from sleep. Apart from that I love everything else about this phone.

Thanks alot for both of your replies, im curently using the note 3 and im sick as touchwiz as well. Sure you can use a third party launcher , but honestly samsung is just recycling the same things over and over. I had all the notes 1-3 and end up selling them within months i like the one max build quality and i really like sense 5.5 im just hoping T mobile will carry it soon

I just picked mine up two days ago. Came from an HTC DNA.
So far I have liked it but I still miss my DNA, but I think that's because I had Viper running on it. In due time it will come to the One Max as well... just have to wait.
Otherwise I think it's the better of the two between it and Samsung.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. I enjoy HTC phones, but as of late their speakers are worthless. Coming from HTC there are things I miss, but I love my note.

It will be over priced, have the crappiest display ever and probably the same 800mah battery they have been using in all their phones since the touch pro.
6 months later they will release 3 more versions, 1 won't have a front facing camera, one will lack LTE and the other will have a smaller screen but the supply will be so low only a handful will buy it.
3 months later those 3 phones will get updated with faster processors and less ram and they will all have the same screen size and then they will stick 4 cameras on their note refresh and announce a line of accessories in partnership with jay-z's rocawear clothing line shortly before being bought out by LG.

Sense 4.0 might actually shine on a note like phone, but like all HTC's lately the speakers and the battery would be major problems.
The specs look crazy. 1080p screen is not a crappy screen by any means.

more like a huge textbook instead of note.
when i think htc, i think HEAVY THICK CRAPS!
They just better bring their A-game. I'd imagine them using the S4 PRO, HD screen of some sorts and the usual other jazz. It really comes down to battery life and their software. Software is what's been killing the OneX in all comparison tests.
I'd imagine a name like the HTC One-Scribe or simply Scribe...since it will come with the scribe pen.
Regardless, competition will only make the Note 2 that much better. I personally wont switch to the HTC variant no matter what the specs.

From the looks of that the included pen won't fit inside it, which is a killer negative point in my eyes for a phone.

Fine... Maybe HTC is copying the Dell streak lol
Samsung is ahead in the android game. But HTC is a close second and they're trying to get back into the top spot. So why not compete in the phablet category? (tablet phones = small and new market). The more (options) the better I guess. If Apple jumped on the tablet phone category, they would have a huge market.
-Once you go NOTE, you'd say 4 inches a Joke
Since I've gotten my Note, I'll probably always be looking for a 5"+ screen for every future phone ... so I love any future where multiple manufacturers compete in the 5"+ phone form factor.

+1. If Samsung decides to discontinue the Note after the first one, my options will be probably limited. We need more 5 inch screen devices.
I've had software/hardware issues with my last two Samsung phones which is why I haven't purchased a note. Whether it's HTC or another manufacturer building a note like phone it gives me another choice which is good. Competition drives development = WIN.

[Q] Have A One X, But Want To Try A Note. Thoughts?

I'm pretty much on the fence of trying a Note. I was against the Phablet look in the beginning but I have pretty much tried every device that has made a mark on this forum and am thinking of giving it a go. Just looking for some opinions/thoughts on this.
Are there any advantages/disadvantages?
Do you think it's a even trade?
Thanks.

The note is a great phone. Really in a league of it's own. If you can find a trade it would be worth it. I wanted to try a one X but could not give up the few perks the note has over the hox.

Its not nearly as bad as you would think. You get use to the size in about a week. Then any other Phone feels like a little toy. One thing for sure, one you watch some videos on YouTube on the note, you'll never want to watch then on anything else.

Size. Great screen too. Overall a great work horse for a semi power user.
I use the spen for quick notes when I am in a call or a quick thought. Watch YouTube like a fiend on the huge screen. Also use it like any great new phone and stream music to 3 different BT devices. The battery life can be hit or miss at times but i have an extra battery and an 8100 maH battery pack to charge with.
I've thought about a nexus many times but can't let go of the note. Next phone will have to have at minimum the same size screen and probably be 1080p

I flop around. I had the iPhone than the Meizu, Galaxy Nexus and now the One X. I do use my phone all day for everything so I think the Note is ideal for that.
Do you guys think I'll be taking a major hit as far as the one x screen vs the note screen? Or is it user preference?

Do you want to go for a note 1? It's a 1000 times better to go for note 2. I had been using htc 1x but did not like the idea of unlocking the bootloader stuff from htcdev. So sold it within 1week of purchase as I bought 2nd hand.
Note 2 is really nice if you can come to terms with the massive screen. Display of note 2 is better than 1. Htc one x screen is nicer but smaller.
Major difference is the battery which runs out for 1x within a day of moderate usage. Whereas note2 lives to almost 2.5 to 3 days.
1x overheating is a major pblm. Note 2 never clocks more than 32 deg but 1x shoots to almost 45 deg normally.

I think giving the note a try is a good idea. Battery life will be an adjustment. It seems I charge mine 2-3 times a day.
The screen and features more than make up for the battery deficiencies. I don't even over clock mine and it never lags. I'm using Padawan v6.2.
I am waiting for an update to JB. The point of having the Note is being able to use the SPen. As soon as we get some project butter goodness, well, what more could we need?

Been trying all kinds of battery solutions myself. Have been carrying an anker 8100 mAh portable charger for a long time and now trying to just carry a spare battery. Seems like it is about break even 14-16 hours use. All day BT on and a lot of audio streaming. Few calls and possibly 20-30 texts

It's so cheap on att and only $50 on wireless amazon currently. It comes with all the top specs you can find today, excluding the upcoming 1080p devices. However, I'm getting mixed reviews from websites such as amazon and phonearena.

Pros: screen, best processor, micro SD slot, everything else I don't list as a con
Con: ..... I don't really consider these things bad at all but they are not the best. Battery is good for me. Camera takes good pictures for a smartphone. Its overheated like three times not really a big deal and I've had it since the beginning of December when I bought it for 200$
The combination of the amazing processor, plentiful ram, display( quality and size) , and the inclusion of a micro sd are its main points.
Yes this phone is highly underated and cheaper and still the phone i would go out and purchase today

Well in my opinion it's the most underrated phone on the market. Fast, well designed very mild LG skin(I use Nova so that takes care of that for me) and a nice sleek design even though I have it cased up due to work.
This is the third LG phone I've owned and the best device by them by far. Although I liked the other two I owned. Coming from the HTC One X and I don't miss that phone at all, nice device but dev unfriendly and HTC just isn't my thimg with their horrible Sense junk.
Buy it for the price you won't regret it imo. The dev community is a nice solid group as well.

Well I personally haven't had the overheating issue and like I said I rock a case because of work. Then again even though I have overclocked ever other phone I've owned, I just don't see a need to with this phone. I've also noticed very few people with the issue. If it was an epidemic I'm sure I would have noticed more since I seem to practically live on XDA, lol. Between here and the Note 10.1, One X and Atrix HD forums.
What's annoying about the phone is that sometimes you cannot put the brightness all the way up. Also camera is not so hot. Great phone overall and happy i have it (first android phone). With decent use my phone lasts about 10-12 hours.
If you have a decent phone right now I would just be patient and see if you like any of the 5 inch 1080p phones coming out (and possibly Galaxy S4). The screen "should" be superior, we won't know until we see it in hand comparing but another thing would be that the new phones will have a bigger battery (optimus pro g if in the USA will have a 3300 battery). If you are fine rooting etc than this phone will be fine but if not maybe the newer phones would be best as it would come with Jelly Bean and more than likely come out with 1-2 more updates (just pure speculation on my part)...whereas this phone will prob get Jelly Bean and that is it- however JB or not this phone runs very smooth and quick on ICS.
If you decide on this phone you will definitely be happy with it, especially at 50 bucks! Hell the Optimus G for Sprint is buy one get one free!
I think one of the reasons this phone is so far under the radar is due to the Nexus 4 stealing it's thunder. The OG and N4 have all the same "guts" but the N4 gets all the press due to having "pure android" and being first in line for all OS updates. That is all well and good, but I couldn't stomach being restricted to 16GB (11 usable) of storage. Not when I can buy a 64GB microSD card for only $40 and store all my media that I like to have on hand. Don't trust the cloud...
The OG also has LTE. That's not important to me since I'm on a Straight Talk plan, but it is a nice bonus feature for most people.
So as long as you're comfortable waiting for the devs here to keep you on the latest and greatest software, this phone IMHO is better than the Nexus 4, which most reviewers are in love with.
Thanks for the great feedback everyone. I was indeed comparing this to the Nexus 4, but this has LTE and N4 does not. However, i was also debating whether or not i wanted to wait for the 5 inch 1080ps instead because well, I like a big screen.

My personal opinion is that the phones are getting too big. I played around with the Note and Note 2 to get a feel for the size, and I just didn't care for it. I need a phone. Not a phablet and that's what I see it turning into at that size.
I agree. Phones are getting way too large, the Note and Note 2 are way too large for my taste and hands for that matter. I have a Note 10.1 tablet and love it so why do I need a bigger phone? Just my opinion as I know phablet users who love it.

Only real complaints I have are the speaker volume (fixed with the Sony enhancement) and the camera isn't that great (which doesn't bother me too much).
Also, the lack of updates. It doesn't effect me since I'm a flashoholic and will flash ROMs anyway, but still... It's more the principle of the matter. LG sucks so much with the updating and this phone should have had JB upon release.
What ever, I want AOKP and CM anyway!

Yeah I do like larger phones. My brother has a Note 2, and upon playing with it I already know its the perfect size. However, I have yet to get the Note 2 because of its price and me being a fairly smaller guy, I'm afraid the Note 2 will be indeed too large for my skinny pockets. So I may take your (xda) word on this phone and purchase the Optimus G within the next week or so.

Its definitely underrated. There isnt any major marketing of this phone, and to be honest people dont really trust LG because of the lack of support and updates. But they did a terrific job with the optimus g, every review that i read/watch praises this phone, how crazy fast it is. Now lg needs to support it and build some momentum to carry it over the optimus g pro.

Samsung GS3 LCD/Digitizer shattered. Thinking about a DNA.

So I had my GS3 for about 3 months before it experienced a 2 foot drop shattering not just the digitizer but the LCD as well. The phone was a good phone, I originally had an Incredible, moved up to the Rezound (which I loved) and then the GS3. What I have learned about Samsung is that the build quality isn't as solid as HTC's (from my experiences). I was thinking about going back to HTC with the DNA.
I just wanted some input from people who own the phone and what their thoughts are about it. Practicality, Functionality, BATTERY LIFE (very important to me) and etc.
Any comments, concerns or suggestion would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you in advance

For all intensive purposes the battery life is the same, if not slightly better than the s3.
And functionality and practicality is determined by you, we can't answer it for you.

Battery life, for me, is leaps and bounds above my s3. I NEVER got 5 hours of screen time on the s3.
Please don't touch my "Thanks" button, it doesn't like you...
Hmm. I am surprised to hear that about the battery life. I haven't read too much about the development of the DNA, is there the whole S-On or S-Off thing that the Rez had? haha
Do you guys notice a difference with the Quad core setup? GS3's dual was very quick and responsive.
Our phone is s on for the time being unless you want to send it to someone and have it opened up. But it really doesn't matter. Only things it changes is that we can't change the splash screen and radios and we have to use an app to flash kernels, besides that it is fine.
And it isn't any smoother per say, but i have seen the s3 get laggy every once in a while, that doesn't happen on the DNA. And apps definitely open faster on the DNA. And very intensive games run better.

I have the S3 and DNA and the battery life is virtually identical for me. Get about 4 hours screen time on both and about 15 hours with a full charge. I have the quad core S3 (international version) and the difference in performance is noticeable. On my S3 (which has 1gb of Ram) I would get lots of redraws on the home screen. Sure custom Rom's/kernels helped but did not totally resolve them. On the DNA I see no redraws or lag. Overall I enjoy the experience of the DNA more than I do my S3 so unless I am going on a long trip, my S3 stays in my desk drawer.
thank you guys for the replies. My main concern is S-Off, I know on the rezzy it made a huge difference (way easier to flash kernels/roms and etc.) Hopefully it isn't as complicated here with S-On. And I'm glad to hear about the battery life. I will most probably be purchasing one soon.
Definitely going to invest in good case.
***EDIT
only thing I am concerned about is not having an SD card slot. -__-
With s on you flash roms like any other phone, and kernels you use an app called flash image gui to flash the boot.img then you just flash the modules in recovery.

Lol if battery life is a concern you are definitely looking at the wrong phone. If anyone tells you different they are in denial. Htc, along with every reviewer on the net about the Dna have all acknowledged the poor performance of the battery.
If you are looking for the best phone out, the note 2 absolutely destroys the DNA. The only thing the dna has over the note 2 is screen resolution.... on paper lol. The note 2 screen is amazing. Honestly just grab one and take a look. Add in the amazing software ( split screen, pop up browser, pop up note and pop up movie player that can all be on the screen at the same time), spen, redonkulous battery life, sd card slot, ability to replace battery and amazing support and you have greatest phone on the market. Hope this helps!

The battery life on this phone is great. I had a Galaxy Nexus originally and then switched from the Note 2 to this.
If you want to carry that thing around in your pocket all day be my guest but I am much happier with the DNA compared to the Note.

And that is your opinion. Most people consider sense the nicest looking manufacture skin our there.
And show me something like viper tweaks on a touchwiz Rom, oh wait, you can't.

This is why I will never buy another HTC phone, the people who buy HTC phones on here do so for the crap sense rom, and will argue with everyone that its the greatest piece of software out there. I buy my phone because of the hardware, and want AOSP as my rom, not this sense crap.

Lol its funny that your phone seems to be the anomaly. Everyone, including HTC THEMSELVES, have acknowledged the poor battery performance. Just look at the size of your battery vs. The amount of pixels the dna is pushing. Do the math man there is reason everyone ( except for a few in denial dna owners) has pointed to the battery peeformance. Living in denial my friend. If you like your dna, kudos to you. Enjoy carrying that phone charger around all day.
If the only bad thing you can say about the note 2 is the size thats a personal thing. Im 5 11 and this phone fits in my hand and pocket beautifully. My girlfriend is 5 5 and she has no problem what so ever with the note. That speaks dividends to how great the note is if the only bad thing you can say about it is the size. Note 2 ftw

Than go buy a nexus.
You should never buy a phone that you don't like stock, because for all you know it may never have aosp. If you don't like sense than don't buy HTC phones, same goes for touchwiz, or any other phone with a skin. Its simple as that.

Umm....no. are you serious? Look at the polls around net of touchwiz vs. Sense vs. stock. Most people prefer stock, then touchwiz and lastly sense. One of the biggest drawbacks of sense is the recent app drawer. Its beyond puzzling. Why would take up entire screen to see recent apps, including cutting away the app drawer, pull down menu and home screen? Very inefficient.

[Q] Galaxy Sx to HTC One

Anyone here with a HTC one who previously owned a Samsung Galaxy phone?
I've been thinking about the HTC One and would like to know your thoughts.
Moved to proper section, please read and respect the rules before posting.
Thanks,
It's much faster but the buttons are in the stupidest places possible.

I moved from the HTC Aria to the Samsung Captivate, S2, and S3. I love the HTC One. There are little things like zoom that I don't like, but overall I'm pleased.
To be honest, I probably would have went to the S4, but the physical home button on the S3 turned me away.
They are both great phones and you should be happy either way you go.

I had a galaxy s2 and and galaxy note 1. I loved them both and they did their job nicely.... But.... I just never like the build quality, plastic just doesn't do it for me. I found myself going back to my old HTC inspire all the time just because I like the feel of the aluminium. I caught back and forth between the s4 and the one. I choose the one for a few reasons: the body is awesome, the screen is insane, feels amazing in your hand. I hate buttons, I lactually like the HTC setup of home and back only. The s4 cool features I realized I would never use, only to show off with haha. And most of all for me, the camera on the one in low light is freaking amazing!! I live were there's no sun, so this is a big deal for me. Hope this helps, and go ahead and ask any questions or concerns, I am well experienced in both phones.

Lol I believe everyone had to go through the tough decision between the HTC One and the S4. I sure did...I stayed at BestBuy for about an Hour before I walked out with the One. The phone is incredibly smooth out of the box, very snappy and the screen is beautiful (accurate). The battery is good but it is no Note 2. I guess HTC kept a 2300mAh battery to keep the phone thin. You won't feel any creeks when you hold or squeeze the device unlike the S4. No doubts at all. I also came from the Old Galaxy Note and now, I'm missing the large display. I don't like how the Note 3 looks so I'm waiting for the HTC One Max!

The One is the best aesthetically IMHO. Tired of the plastic galaxy phones. Just wasnt sure about battery and GUI.

I just ordered a black HTC One. :fingers-crossed:
Was debating between S4 and HTC One. Wanted something different for a changed, currently using an AT&T Galaxy SII I-777.
HTC One for $120 instead of S4's $150 upgrade price.

It looks better, it feels better, it's more responsive, the screen looks better to me, the audio is better, camera is good(not quite as good as s4). Sense is better to me than tw.
Play with them both. I'd be surprised if you like the s4 better. They're both good phones though. I just think the one is better.

How about flashing roms? The s4 has some issues with mf3 firmware. only root now, no custom recovery.

Our recoveries are all fine. The only issue is if you update your hboot you might have trouble with s-off. But right now there are ways around it. All is good over here and we can use all the international roms as well.

I had the One a couple months ago for a while, have an S4 now. If the two phones could procreate and make one phone with the best features from both, it would be the best. Loved the audio and metal frame of the One, but no removable battery and no MicroSD. I think the S4 runs a lot more smoothly, and has more flexibility with the SD, but rear speaker makes sound quallity ridiculous. Also my biggest complaint right now with Samsung is the MF3 update that locked down the bootloader (aka no custom ROMs). HTC gives you instructions on their website to unlock the bootloader (unless something has changed since I had my One). Albeit I'm still preferring the S4.

I'm not sure how you figure the s4 is smoother. It's definitely got lag and it's choppy. The one does not lag and it's not choppy. I've had both and the one is far better in transitions and feel.
You are right about not having removable battery or sd card. I do miss those from my galaxy devices. That and the button placement are my only complaints with the one.

The One feels much smoother than the S4. Not saying the S4 is slow...but it doesn't feel as snappy as the One. Maybe because all those touchwiz features are memory hoggers.

I found the OS sluggish on the One. I do have to specify I never had the stock rom though. When I got the phone it had been rooted and flashed, although I had installed a rom that was supposedly "stock" with just upgraded kernel. Maybe I didn't get the same experience as you because of that.
Also I forgot to mention the lack of a home button. Ridiculous. I tried the logo2home mod but that's still IMO a major design flaw of the One.
