Looking for an app. Perhaps never developed - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi There
Im looking for an Android app that is able to start an application on a Windows box
What im looking for is that im having a surveillance system at home based on Windows 8 and ContaCam with outdoor
IP cams. I want to set up some indoor cams based on some of our old Android phones. (No problem)
The thing is that I dont want them to record when we are at home. So im looking for at way to automate this!
My idea:
A Android app that uses wifi to locate if an android phone is on home network or away.
When home this app sends a heatbeat perhaps every 2 min to a server software on windows.
If this server software recieves a heartbeat from me or my wifes phone or both, it should shut down the ContaCam or any other software selected. (Could be other software) If already shut down it should do nothing.
If no heartbeat is recieved within perhaps 10min it should start Contacam or any other selected software.
If already started it should do nothing.
An advanced version could be that you recieved an feedback that the Process had been started.
This software could be developed very basic to that with the server software you choose what exe or Bat file to launch.
And what process to shutdown.
I haven't been able to locate any software out there. Maybe it already exist. If not i hope somebody
would use my idea and develop this software
It would be nice if there could be a linux server software too.
Best Regards

You can use this one:
http://owtroid.com/remotelauncher/mediawiki/index.php?title=Remote_Launcher
with combination of Tasker or Lllama.
Just write two batch files or shell scripts to start and stop surveillance.

Xperia S with Mac OS X Discussion

Anyone owns a Mac and the Xperia S?
My experience with the phone (firmware .73) and my Mac (OS X 10.7.3 Lion) is particularly bad:
Unable to perform drag and drop media transfer like previous Android devices.
The Official Mac Bridge is very buggy (Even on latest update ver2.1), will stuck when transferring lots of file, and does not work with lossless music
Unable to perform USB tethering
Don't get me wrong, the phone itself is great, but I just don't understand why it works bad on a Mac.
Please share your experience and possible fix, if any.

I suspect a very high proportion of Mac users would choose an iPhone so the number of S users on OSX would be very small.
I have Mac but only sync one playlist at the time if I click on too many playlist then the phone just hang. No option for back up
Use wifi file explorer pro or swiftp to transfer files over wifi.

In fact I switched from iPhone 4 to XS...
I used to have a Huawei phone and a HP TouchPad.
Both works fine on a Mac, just this...

I aslo switched from iPhone4 to Xperia S... and have exactly the same problems with copying music using Mac bridge... I even posted on the Sony forum for this and got a reply that asked for more information.. and after i gave it never heard from them again...
I now use double twist and air sync to copy music to my phone.
Mac bridge seems to work ok on other media files just not mp3's.
Really lame on Sony's part.
I'm using bootcamp, just so I can use the XS to it's fullest.
Here here!
I'm on a Mac too.
And yes. Mac Bridge is just too slow...
it's very funny, it's like they gave 0 support to mac users for this... very disappointing.
OK. So apparently Sony DID try to fix some bugs in the Mac Bridge.
Ver. 2.1 (current) added more options on the Mac Bridge, and it seems the playlist problem works better. Although OS X's Image Capture will not read the device, there's now a direct import photo to folder in the latest version of Mac Bridge.
I am still unable put my entire playlist into the phone though, as the Mac Bridge hangs again when it has transferred about 80% of my songs. I also don't seem to find a workable wired solution for drag-drop file transfer.
Finally, was anyone able to perform backup through the Mac Bridge?
I tried two times and every step return "Failed".
Come on Sony... :-(

I thought for awhile that Sony Bridge hangs when transferring songs, but it works for me. Give it a little patience
The problem i have though is that when a new song is added to the playlist and Sony Bridge detects it and sync it to the phone, the phone itself doesnt update the playlist but will have the new songs added.
I was able to perform backup through MacBridge but it seems like it uses a lot of the Macs resources when doing this.
Mac users are always eternally complaining about one thing or another.
I work for a hardware and software rental company and we only ever get Mac users calling in with issues.
I don't understand you guys, you buy an inferior platform that struggles to deal with a computing ecosystem that was built around windows.
I hope making the switch from IOS to Android will reveal something to you Apple fan. The simple truth they make very basic devices which only work well if you stay within the jurisdiction of Apple.
Next time get a flipping PC like 98% of the flipping world.
Stop using a minority device and wonder why developers don't spend enough optimizing their kit for this deluded minority.

Right, just because I complain about *SONY*'s software makes me another mac complain retard, huh?
To be honest, I've been on a Mac for more than a year, with no problem on both hardware and software at all, while I clearly remember my Windows 7 desktop hangs occasionally just for many basic stuff. My last Android device works great with my Mac too, so it's not a Mac problem in any sense.
I don't really want to argue with you about OS (it's pointless) here, but please let me remind you that this is a Mac discussion/support thread, if you have nothing useful to say, just leave, no one force you to reply.

I'd rather have a platform that hangs occasionally than one that throws up issues and doesn't work at all with a lot of stuff. If you haven't had any issues with your Mac, that's probably because you've so far stuck to basic computing.
Like I said, Macs regularly throw up issues connecting to third party hardware and I know because I spend many hours each week dealing with these problems.
There is absolutely nothing you can say to change this opinion.

I had been using Double Twist with my other Android devices but found that the Sony didn't always show up in the menu, so I started to use Isyncr. It works well enough but some songs for some unknown reason won't make it through. I had to remove some songs from my playlist that were causing this and then it was ok. But Double Twist does not see these playlists now so I have to use the built-in app, Rocket player, or PowerAmp. I just use the stock music app now.
As for file access, I happen to be running Parallels, and therefore I can mount the phone on my mac, and as my Windows Desktop can "see" my Mac disk, it's very easy to access the phone. But I agree, it's stupid to have to do this.
The Sony Bridge was goofy for me - I would see for example a duplicate Music folder and music folder (note the case difference) and one folder was spawning duplicates. Deleted one and the other disappeared too! Who knows was weirdness was happening. So I didn't use it. As for photos, I just copy manually; forget syncing to iPhoto, but that's how I always did it for all my other devices.

I imagine the particular posters have found answers to their problems seeing as this thread
dates from 2014 but I thought it might be worthwhile answering all the same as I ran in to the same niggles when I began using this app so if anyone searching these issues subsequently may find some worth from my reply.
First of all as a far as experience and knowledge is concerned. Firstly with cars;fixing, modifying, engine management tuning, obd2, diagnostics. Basically my auto knowledge is extremely wide and extensive from approx 35 years of obsession and getting stuck in an the deep end whereas my knowledge and experience of computers and smart phone tech is on much, much shakier ground
In fact, for those of my vintage. i.e late 30s,early 40s remember when we were kids. and programmable VCRs were the height of cutting edga technology. Well I'm like the way our parents and grand parents were then. i.e pretty much baffled by it and even following the instructions it was hit and miss whether you actually managed to record that film rhat was on at 4am lol.
So for the second issue brought up by the OP it doesn't matter whether you email yourself the log file or not (I found the few times i tried it that the file wouldn't attach and when it did the problem was the same anyway) you need Microsoft Office or any other type of office suite to view the files. On the pc i have Microsoft office but had to download an app to my phone to view. csv files. Again an office suite that not only displays. csv files but puts them into a spreadsheet format is required.
As for the first issue it's preferable in every way to view the site. on a pc because on the phone display the actual box to sign into is off screen and takes a little bit of zooming out and seaching to find, the same goes after you have signed in when another box appears with a list of the logs files recorded and the tab to choose it. This is where my lack of fundamental computer/web knowledge comes in. I can't tell you why it doesn't sit nicely inti an easily accessible mobile format but it doesn't. Once you've found the first sign in box/pop up it becomes simple, annoying but simple.
As for there being nothing after signing into the webview site successfully all I can assume is either you've no log files to view which you should have if it's all been set up correctly, including choosing which PIDs to send to logfile or the pop up/window where you click on your logfiles is right off screen and has to be looked for. Of course you don't get that problem if accessed using your desktop.

[Q] Android background data

Hello everyone !
I have a problem that may have been addressed many times before. I do apologize, but the search didn't bring me needed answers. I also apologize for any bad english.
Here is the deal :
I am concerned with the "background data" the android os transfers via my mobile internet.
I rooted the phone, cleared all the useless .apk's from /system/app folder (even removed google play and as much of google stuff as i could), installed DroidWall and set very strict firewall rules ...
And still when i open data usage in settings menu, i see "android os" transfered 6.6mb in past 20 days. WHAT is that stuff ?!
I only use internet for stock e-mail, naked browser, internet radio, and wolfram alpha. Only those 4 applications should ever use the internet. I wish that not a single byte of data is ever EVER transfered besides the needs of these 4 applications. I do not want "Android Os" or any other background process connecting to any server on the internet "behind my back".
I am not very experienced in android os. But if it is required, i will learn how to flash another rom, to cook rom, learn and do anything i can to take COMPLETE control of the bandwith, if it is possible. Is it ? If it is, the main question and the reason i posted this thread is : HOW ? Just please do not assure me that that data is nothing to worry about, or ask me why do i care. If you can say nothing about solution, you can not help me.
The device is 2011 Xperia Pro (mk16i) and android version is 4.0.4
Thanks in advance !
There are some data between your phone and google server. Recall some phones have feature to disable background data. Not sure whether your phone have it.
You could try some tool to monitor what application creates link.

There is a built in tool "Data Usage" in the settings. It shows the 4 applications that i use with internet + Direct Push that checks email from microsoft server + Android OS in the list as well. I guess all the stuff going on "behind my back" is packed into Android OS. What tool do you suggest ?
There is "restrict background data" option. But when i select it - i get the warning that some apps will not work unless connected to wifi. The last part of this warning indicates to me that Aroid Os will still send the data. But only when connected to wifi. And i dont want it ever to send any data. Why would any data be sent to google server ? I disabled all synchronisation with google ...
You could also use the tool network monitor https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jmm.networkmonitor which wrote by my friend. It could find which application using your network. And could display the peer address.
I think some google application such as gtalk service are connecting google server background. No choice.

Can't change location or screen orientation

Hi all,
Hope I'm posting this in the right place. If not, please move.
I have Remix_OS_for_PC_Android_M_64bit_B2016072603 installed as a virtual guest in Virtualbox 5.0.24_Ubuntu r1083 with Xubuntu-core 16.04 as the host machine. Using a Toshiba Satellite Pro L510. Took me four days to nut out how to get to this point, but installed and booting and stable now.
My issues:
1/ Location: When I try to run an app from Play Store it thinks I'm outside of Australia/New Zealand (the app I'm trying to run is specific to those regions). I'm in Australia, the app works fine on my phone (am logging in exactly the same way).
(* Update: I installed GPS Status and it tells me GPS is not switched on. Was hoping to then change the location with Fake GPS, which I also installed. It won't do anything with same message: GPS not enabled or similar.)
2/ Resolution: The screen defaults to portrait, as expected I suppose, but I have a 1366x768 monitor and it doesn't fit in the screen. Consequently, I have a scroll bar because as Virtualbox Guest Additions is not compatible with Remix OS at this point there is no mouse integration (I need to hit Right Control to use mouse in host and same to use in guest again). I need to press a bunch of keys to just scroll the screen up and get back to where I was going. :|
Other than that, all working great, Remix OS is great, thanks to the team that created it. The main reason I was wanting to use it is to use this one app on my computer (AFL Live) and plug my computer into the TV. I don't use my phone for anything other than that one app, SMS and the occasional call so I am by no means an Android junky. In fact, before this, I knew very little about it (but a lot about Linux/Ubuntu).
This install has been a quest, a learning curve, and these are my last two hurdles so I'm calling for help if it's out there. Trawled the net, tried some things, but have hit a brick wall with these two problems.
My first post so not sure of the protocol. If these two issues should be the subject of two separate threads, mods please advise and I will edit accordingly and create a new thread.
Tnx in advance.
(* Further update: Just having a read of this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/remix/remix-os/remix-os-installation-rooting-t3293769
Wondering if rooting the device would allow me to change any of these, in particularly, the location to Australia where it should be, or switch on GPS so my app can see where I actually am. I'm presuming it thinks I am in the Cocos Islands or somewhere else!)
(* And further update: The screen resolution was as easy as typing Alt+F1 to launch a terminal then 'wm size 1366x768'. That looked terrible, though, so changed it to 1048x768 (from memory) and it is good enough, though not perfect. I may be able to get closer with further tweaking. Now the last, and most important, hurdle to leap: How do I get Remix OS, and more specifically my AFL app, to know I'm in Australia. Frustration. It's taken about ten days, on and off, to get here and still not quite where I want to be, but hopefully my travails can help someone else along the way ...)
Gave up on it. If anyone comes up with a way of running Remix OS in Virtualbox and setting the location, please post. Guestadditions would probably fix it and maybe one day ROS will be compatible with it.
On the other hand, I did learn a lot more about Android than I cared to know, but am now thinking about buying my first ever Android tablet to do the job with a USB/HDMI adapter.

Android kiosk mode for a rdp remoteapp

I thought I should give it a go here after some googling which didn't turn up the right results.
I am looking for an app that can put an android device in some sort of kiosk mode and start a connection to a remoteapp which is on a windows 2012 server. I know about rdp client from windows, but that doesn't cut it because I need to go through the app interface with all his settings that can be changed when connecting. This is also the case with several other rdp clients I have tried.
Kiosk mode isn't really a problem, there are several apps out there that can restrict to launching a single app in android.
BTW I would be happy to pay for it, just need the possibility to test it in our environment. I am hoping there is something standard out there that lets you accomplish this.
(android version will be 6.0 and above on which it should work)
Thanks for any advice.
Hi,
I'm looking for exactly the same thing, did you managed to get any app that answer your request?
Your help would be much appreciated. Thank you.
No sorry. I am still looking for such an app.
Have you tried the Scalefusion Android kiosk app?
