[Q] Any progress on unlocking the bootloader/recovery for the I545VRAUME7? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Hi All,
I'm a little new here but I've done a lot of searching and haven't been able to find anything recent on this topic. From what I can see there has been no progress unlocking the bootloader to flash custom Roms on the i545vruame7 s4 in a few months. I just got my S4 yesterday and when I received it, it already had i545vruame7 installed. I am able to gain root access but not unlock the bootloader to flash any custom roms. Have I missed something? Is there any way to flash back to the old version?
Thanks,
Peter

Welcome to the S4! So long as you are not on mj7 firmware you can still install Safestrap which allows you to run touchwiz based ROMs. Just search for it in development. If I'm not mistaken, it works with the Google Play Edition ROM too, so you can have a little bit of AOSP goodness.

Just to be curious, where did you get your phone from?

Thanks for the info! I've been thinking about getting involved in the development side, I develop android apps but have never touched anything as far as Roms and bootloaders. I just want it working so I can install CM on my phone so I figured it might be worth a shot.
I installed Safestrap and then stupidly tried to flash a rom slot with CM 10.1 which didn't work. Is there a list available anywhere of touchwiz based ROMs?

I ordered mine from best buy, im really hoping it doesnt have the update

Please let me know, I have 15 days to return this, I could always return and swap for a bestbuy version if it came to it.

What you have, I believe is the best your going to get until somebody figures out how to crack the bootloader. Im hoping the phone I ordered is running the same software that you have on yours.

Makes sense, I used titanium to freeze the SDM app so I'm hoping that will stop it from auto updating, along with a whole bunch of other crapware.

[Q] S4 woes

OK. I am going to provide as much detail as I can for now. Please let me know what additional information will help you help me. Thanks
I have a S4 for Verizon. I have been trying to root it so I can load the Google edition image on it. However, none of the tutorials I have seen seem to work on my device. I bought it brand new direct from Samsung off contract (didn't want to loose my unlimited data) so I don't think I can get a warranty replacement through Verizon (haven't rooted it yet). The furthest I seem to get is that SuperSU gets installed but will not download the binaries. So I cannot continue with the rest if the steps with rooting and re-imaging. Also, most steps have you install a specific kernal version as the first step but not sure if that is happening because my screen don't look the same as the ones in the tutorials.
Phone: SCH-1545
OS ver: 4.3
Kernal: 3.4.0
Build: JSS15J.1545VRUEMJ7
HW ver: 1545.06
Thanks.

Just so you know, the only thing available for MJ7 build is root. Installing a custom recovery or custom ROMs is not possible at this time.

No. Once the phone is updated, there is no way to go back.
As I stated above, all we can do is root. With root we can debloat and use Xposed framework to make some changes.

It's Verizon, they lock down every phone they sell. You have to do research before you buy your phone if you want custom software on Verizon, or switch carriers.

I know Verzon sucks in that regard but the service is awesome. I get full 4G coverage just about everywhere and I've got unlimited data still. Plus, I didn't buy it from them, I payed full price from an online vendor so that I wouldn't have to change my contract.
Oh well, guess I'll just have to keep an eye out for when someone finally cracks it.
I hate waiting....

Advice on upgrading?

Hey guys,
I apologize in advance if i am not up to speed on all the posts and news of S4 development.
My Verizon S4, is still running ME7 and i guess i keep waiting to get unlocked bootloader but it seems that probably will never happen since there are so many builds beyond that already.
Just to verify, ME7 and any of the later builds still have locked bootloader is that right?
Would you guy recommend that i do the update and switch to something newer? Hyperdrive is great, but running it through Safestrap is not ideal. At the same time i don't want just running a stock TouchWiz, which is the worst every.
Anyway, i am sorry if these are newb questions.

Glad I found your post, as I have been laying low for a while now and had the EXACT same question! I've been on HyperDrive RLS9.1 for a few months and, while I'm totally happy with it, I'm getting the itch to flash. I know the "ROMs that work with SS/ME7" thread is no longer updated and since 4.4.2 leaked, I'm wondering the same thing as you: would it be wise to update the OS past ME7? I'm pissed that as soon as I got my phone I let it OTA to ME7, but I had read everyone talking about NOT updating as they would likely lock out SS and such.
So, if I update (or flash) to a newer version, are there any significant benefits, or should I stick on ME7?

Right now you can still use SafeStrap with the updated bootloaders. And there are more ROM options for you too. Yes you will update your bootloader to a Knox one but people are still actively trying to find an exploit on those. If you want my opinion yea go ahead and update... But think about it in the end its your call

[Q] S4 abandoned.

Am I the only one that feels like the S4 has been partially abandoned by most devs [MK2]? Like AOSP is a dream we can say good bye to?
AOSP FOR MK2 IS THE MAIN POINT OF THIS DISCUSSION. STOP MENTIONING MDK
If you have an MDK S4 there are aosp ROMs available. If you aren't on MDK you're stuck with TW. I've actually seen a jump in the amount of developers in the past couple months.

And also more Devs are making ROMs generic now... Like liquid smooth. Its one file for all s4's and it detects which carrier/boot loader your phone is and installed the propper files.
This opens up many more options for the future of mdk s4 at least.. Philz recovery also has this now too so more and more are starting to use this method

Yeah I remember you saying that before, but this is exactly the situation that can happen. I would've never bought a Samsung device if I didn't love Touchwiz. Sure I run AOSP a lot, I'm on Google Edition right now, but if something happened to this phone I would be perfectly content with stock Touchwiz.
If you're going to stick on Verizon, it seems Motorola is the only company coming out with AOSP phones on this network.

They're selling for less than I purchased it on contract. Which is also a bummer. Honestly If there was some for of aosp like GPe port or a kexec method I'd really love this phone. I'm currently running foxes w/ a holo(yolo) theme which is the only reason I haven't chucked it out of a third story window.

Yeah like I said foxhounds is as close as you're going to get for the time being. And they're going for 300-500 depending on accessories etc. Which would still cover a Moto X, maybe a Maxx if you're lucky.

Indeed indeed. I'm hoping that you guys will be successful.
If only bypassing the whole locked os was possible and just booting from an SD card (like the HD2), or kinda like what they did on the touchpad.
Just re-write the whole system. Seems like that would be just as easy.

Unfortunately I cant find the right resistor to short to start the boot from SD process, though im still looking. The boot from SD is being tested on the note 3 today by some others so we'll see how that goes and go from there I guess.
I wish Samsung was as helpful as HP was with the touchpad, well that and a device was found with android already on it to help jumpstart that process.

Well, you can get "sorta close" by rooting the phone and freezing as much of the bloat and crapware as possible, then installing Google Experience Launcher. It kind of feels more like a Google phone...

Yea unfortunately SafeStrap users are always going to be bound to whatever build their stock Touchwiz is as far as Roms go. Well unless bootstrapping ( kexec ) comes their way. So no GPE for them. But I saw the op in another thread and I'm pretty sure he's got mdk so he can do whatever.

[Q] Saferoot or Clockworkmod Recovery?

I'm on a new Galaxy S4. Model SCH-1545, baseband version VRUEMK2, on Verizon wireless. I have root access and I wanted to install this ROM, do I need to go through saferoot to do so or is my version able to use a custom recovery?
Also is there any downside to using saferoot? Will the OS run slower?
I know similar topics have been covered quite a bit here and I have read through many threads, so I apologize for rehashing a familiar topic - I just wanted specific advice if possible because I hard bricked my last phone when I thought I had it all figured out and I'd rather look like a dummy on here than brick another phone.
I greatly appreciate any help that anyone can offer.

To answer the outstanding question: rooting your phone won't make it run slower.

Ah, that was a typo. I meant to ask if ROMs would run slower when using safestrap. Thank you for your response though.
And I think I'm good with stock 4.3 for now. I just wanted a bare bones, GPE style, KitKat ROM but that does not appear to be possible on my device currently so I'll probably just wait until something like that pops up.

Safestrap gives you many options. ..hyperdrive is by far the most customizable rom out of the gate I have seen and one of the fastest..

Thanks for the tip. I'm still trying to read up on all of the available ROMs to see if any jump out at me and Hyperdrive seems to be pretty cool, seems like a lot of people enjoy it and it has a good dev team too.
