[Q] Stuck in bootloop (unlocked/rooted/s-off) - HTC EVO 3D

Hello all, and thank you for taking your time to attempt to help me with my problem.
I could not find a solution even after hours of researching and trial and error, so please forgive me if this happens to be one of those problems that are seemingly impossible to solve, when the actual solution is really quite simple! I'm hoping it is at the very least...
A few days ago I received an HTC Evo 3d from a family member.
I'm certain that the phone was completely stock, never rooted, no custom ROMs ---- just an ordinary HTC 3vo.
So I decide that I'm going to go ahead and find the steps necessary in order to flash a custom ROM, and I believe I did with this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1889438
I followed the guide, and eventually got to "***Step3: Perform JuopunutBear (wire trick) to get S-OFF status" where I had a little difficulty with the timing of the taps on the SD card. At one point I removed the battery from my phone because I thought it was stuck on the screen with the green arrow pointing downward, and after trying to reboot I found that the same JuopunutBear screen with the green arrow was still there.
I removed the battery once more, but this time when booting I held the volume down button to initiate bootloader. That went successfully, and so after trying the methods I found at http://unlimited.io/jbtroubleshooting.htm to remove this screen, I figured that I might try and flash a ROM from recovery and maybe that would fix it?xD My logic proved only half correct because even after formatting data/cache/dalvik, and then flashing a few different ROMs (not in the order of course) to see if any of them would allow the phone to boot up completely into OS, the phone is now stuck in a bootloop :'(
If I didn't provide enough information in the above description then I'd be glad to give any more details.
My bootloader reads like this:
- Juopunutbear -
SHOOTER XC SHIP S-OFF RL
HBOOT-1.57.5757
eMMC-boot

^ Never noticed that the date is inaccurate before typing all of this out! Not sure that has anything to do with my problem here, but still interesting..
Thank you again for taking your time to help me.

This phone has given me trouble since it was first given to me lol.
The first issue before rooting or anything was with the inability to use wifi!
I ended up having to buy service for the phone to even register my Gmail account..

You're in good shape
With s off you can recover easily.
The question is what do you want to run?
If you're going to stay ics sense, then you'll just need to format all partitions except sd and flash a Rom
If you want to run a jb Rom, you need to downgrade your hboot to the jbear 1.50

I think the date is the release of the bootloader or something...shouldn't be today's date

Thank you for the reply
I'll try flashing different sense ROMs specifically,
and see if it will boot all the way through to the home screen.

Have you installed a recovery?
I suggest 4ext
Sent from my PG86100 using xda app-developers app

I have installed a recovery, and it just happens to be 4ext!
I've been installing my ROMs by toggling usb storage in recovery, placing the ROM on the root of my microSD, and after disconnecting from usb storage I proceed to flash the chosen ROM, provided I've already wiped everything.
My trouble usually comes afterward when the ROM has completed it's installation and I go to reboot. Every time I've tried so far I've encountered a bootloop :/ But we'll see this time!

Gotcha
You'll get it sorted
What Rom are you trying now?
Sometimes you need to flash the boot.IMG after the Rom, but that usually only happens if youre s on.
If it still bootloops I would try this next:
Boot to recovery
Wipe all partitions
Reboot recovery
Wipe all partitions again
Flash Rom
Reboot phone
If all else fails you can run the ruu (will return u to stock Rom and recovery) and you will keep s off but will need to install recovery again.

I chose Team d3rp - Lights Out just to see if it would work, and to my surprise it did!!!
I wiped everything but my sd manually once,
and after flashing the ROM, the aroma installer gave the option to wipe again so I did.
After a suspenseful minute or two during the reboot, I finally got everything set up!
I can't thank you enough..!!
I'm not sure if I should make another thread or not, but the only problem I see now is with the wifi.
I have it connected to my network, and it's showing full signal,
but I can't access the internet and 3g doesn't even pick up when wifi is on.
If needed I'll make another thread, but I figured I would ask just in case!
I appreciate all the help so far.

Try a reboot or different kernel...don't know why it doesn't work

Hello, a couple of days ago I received an HTC Evo 3D, but I don't like the stock HTC rom, so I decided to use NonSense (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1507616). I updated firmware, and installed CWM 6.0, wiped partitions and installed that ROM. But now i got a bootloop :/ .
Bootloader is unlocked..

S-off, I think it has to be s-on, hboot 1.53.0007, i'm currently trying to use RUU get back to stock, RUU says :
from image version 3.28.401.1 to 3.28.631.1
But it fails because of model id.
Bootloader is currently relocked.

You can only flash sense based ROMs with that h-boot. Since you're s-off just downgrade your h-boot to 1.49.0007 or 1.49.1107 and you can flash anything you want

Oh crap, made a mistake, I have s-on.

Then you can only flash sense based ROMs. Try Cool ICS, it's great. Or do s-off ?

You need 4ext recovery and smartflash enabled because Cool uses custom kernel

Please Help, Evo 3D won't boot pass the htc logo

So I tried flashing MeanRom the ics version onto the Evo 3d, and it flashed it. But every time it booted into the lock screen it rebooted itself. So I tried going back to the back up I made. But did not work, tried flashing a different rom but did not work also. It will go into recovery which was twrp but switched it to Ext4. So whatever I try it will just go into the HTC logo and get stuck there. I am at a loss, Please Help.
I will keep trying, but I'm running out of ideas
it does have s-on

I had this exact same issue after trying to flash Myn's ICS ROM with Touch Recovery on 1.5 s-on..How I was finally able to fix it was to delete the 4 ext folder off my SD card. Then I booted into fastboot and pushed TWRP recovery back onto my phone and flashed a gingerbread rom. If you need help pushing the recovery via fastboot, this thread is the answer. Be sure to give JTNiggle some thanks.

Good luck.

Doesn't EXT4 Touch Recovery take care of that for you? That was my impression. Off topic, I know..
evo rebooting
yes 4ext recovery takes care of that and you guys should be using it and make sure you have smart flash enable
I did try flashing a gingerbread rom with twrp but didn't work, which is why I flashed ext4
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
Well I used the dumlock method, which should have helped me flash the rom without manually going into my computer to flash via cmd right?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
Happens to me too!
To flash a new ROM, go to your computer, Command Prompt , type in the direction of your recovery. ex= cd\evo3dTWRP, then type in "fastboot boot recovery.img (or whatever the name of your recovery img is), press enter and your phone should boot into Recovery. Wipe all data, then flash ROM.
BTW: Do you have Smartflash Enabled in 4EXT,?
Well bootloader is working and the recovery is too, I used twrp but noticed it wasn't working so I flashed 4ext. But for some reason it won't boot up roms (of any kind) or even restore my backup. The recoveries will restore or flash the rom. But once I reboot the phone it will just get stuck on the HTC logo. Yeah smartflash is and was enabled.

If you're trying to install an ICS ROM, they tend to bootloop for most who are s-on. I recommend you get s-off.

[Q] [A] Help stuck on boot loop.... cannot find help in searched threads

GSM, S-on, H boot 1.49.0018, I used HTC dev to root it. Revolutionary CWM v4.0.1.4
I unlocked my GSM Evo3D bootloader using the HTCDev.com method.
I had the Cool Rom, Cool ICS v8 running fine. I would flash the boot image via fast boot “fastboot flash boot boot.img”
All was fine, the battery wasn’t lasting long enough and I decided to change ROM to see what else was on offer.
I did full wipe and deleted dalvik cache.
I flashed the mwakious3Drom ROM, from version 7? As stated to do, this booted up fine and I restarted this and used the phone for a few minutes.
I then tried to upgrade this to version 10 using the correct method and that’s when the problem started the phone was stuck on the splash screen when turned on
I tried again to flash the kernel, because searches for threads all say flash the kernel via fast boot and this has just had me stuck on the htc boot logo the phone restarts every time and this continues.
I tried another rom to see if this would fix it and I tried the King Cobra rom. everything seems to flash fine and then I get stuck on the Splash screen of the ROM.
In a last attempt I tried a shipped ROM (getting the rom from the exe when extracted etc) and I have had no luck, it will not flash (maybe for an obvious reason, I even tried the boot image, no luck)
I have had a desire, desire HD and incredible s before this windows mobile phones, I generally do not have problems but was stupid enough to not do a backup so there is nothing to restore! I hardly have had a problem so tried to save on the space (idiot).
I have a Desire HD and I can flash roms fine, I have clearly made a silly mistake somewhere but I cannot get anything at the minute to work as a fix.
If someone could advise that would be great and I would change the title to have an answer to help others in the future.
Thank you I appreciate your help.
*(Another thing I noticed if it's important. When booting into Rev CWM it says at the bottom,
E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/command
E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/log
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/log
etc. Probably because I don't have them?)
You just have to mount USB from CWM and then you can control your phones memory from your computer after the drivers have installed themselves after you plugged your phone into the computer
Just go into mounts and storage in cwm and you will see the option to mount USB.
It can't mount the drives because you deleted them but it should be okay if you just mount USB and drag drop the ROM onto your device.
I also suggest to call claims and let them know you want them to send you a sky rocket instead if they sent you the desire in place of the old captivate. The screen on the desire had issues. Do this asap if you don't want to be stranded without a working phone. It happened to me and I had to pull the battery a few times. I was pretty upset to be quite honest.

You can flash any of the custom ICS roms with the base 3.28.401.1
You can NOT flash any of the custom ICS roms with the base 3.28.707.1
without the new radio and firmware the 707 base will not install and will go into a constant bootloop.
of course you know to use lastest 4ext recovery or "fastboot flash boot boot.img" command on the 401 roms.

Worked great when I tried a ROM with a 401 base. I didn't realise this caused issues.
I wasn't doing a great deal wrong then was I. The only thing is the king cobra ROM should have worked.

4ext does a great job of flashing any GB Rom including kernel with S-on, but s-on people flashing ICS with it still seem to have problems for some reason. That's why I always suggest s-off.

I normally use the anthrax hybrid kernel to flash ics and it works fine I was s-on til last night. I'm also on cdma so it may not apply but you should research before you flash any rom to make sure something extra isn't required

Touchscreen unresponsive after flashing new ROM

Hboot 2.09
I've unlocked the bootloader and rooted my phone. I'm using the TWRP recovery, and am S-ON. I successfully flashed ViperMOD, but when I got to the start up screen, the touch screen and the haptic buttons would not respond. Thinking it was the ROM, I flashed CM10 only to find that I had the exact same problem there. I'm flashing the ROM first in TWRP and then the boot.img through fastboot. I know it is something software related because the touch functionality works in TWRP but not in any ROM.
Thanks in advance

Did you flash the full 3.16 OTA with the tp.img? tp.img works with TWRP 2.4.1.0 and any 3.16 based ROM but not any 3.15 ROM or AOSP rom. If you did, you have two choices. Either you can only use 3.16 roms, or you can try flashing this: http://themikmik.com/showthread.php?13192-FIRMWARE-S-OFF-1-12-HBOOT-ONLY-Jewel-Firmware-Collection-Latest-Radio-1-12-11-1210&p=286650&viewfull=1#post286650 That is the tp.img from 3.15 firmware and some have reported that it fixes this problem. You must flash this by renaming it to PJ75IMG.zip, putting it in the root of your external SD card, and going to bootloader. Upon request, accept the flash. Make sure you don't have another PJ75IMG.zip file in your external SD card. I'm not sure personally if this works but it's worth trying.

If you have no way of flashing the 3.15 tp firmware, your only option is to flash a 3.16 rom.

I am having exactly the same issue. I have successfully flashed several different roms (Charmeleon, UR Evo, Viper) and once loaded, I have no touchscreen response at all. At this point, I want to relock it, but when I attempt the RUU, the program doesn't see the phone (all drivers are installed). I can't get the phone to work so I had to buy a cheap tracfone to use in the mean time. Any suggestions? (I wish I'd saved a copy of the stock rom after unlocking but I thought it would work so I didn't)
Also, I have tried flashing MeanBean (which fails outright) and CyanogenMod, Avatar, and Evervolv (all of which hang out on the loading screen and never progress). I just want my phone back.

What baseband (radio) are you on? If you're on the baseband ending in 1210, you can only run ROM's based on software version 3.16 and you must use TWRP 2.4 or newer.
Here is some info that might be useful:

Also keep in mind that being S-on you essentially have to flash MeanBean twice-once to install the ROM, then again to install the kernel.

My radio : 1. 12. 11. 1119
TWRP v2.5.0.0
HBOOT: 2.09
Open DSP- v31.1.0.45.0815
Sorry guys I should explain my case further. I bought this phone from ebay. It was stuck on a soft brick which Bigdady619 helped me get out of. (Thanks again Bro!). So this is my current problem. Phone is unlocked S-ON. It was already on current HBOOT 2.09 and v 3.15.651.6. Now I need S-OFF but tried to do dirtyracun (on UBUNTU live CD) several times and ended with a "failed connection test error " at step14. went to IRC channel and they said is USB related issue. I have USB 2 and Good USB cable. Dont have HTC original but I dont understand why it has to be that one. I'm an audio and electronics engineer and know how USB works. Anyways thats whats keeping me from the holy grail! On the other side I cant flash touchpanel firmware cause Im not S-OFF. I've spent ****less hours on this forums and havent found an answer to the touch screen problem, other than flashing the firmware, which some people with the same problem have done and still no fix. At the moment I have a what seems to be a perfectly working Viper 4G 3.1.5 installed. Its the only ROM that would install correctly anyways. Touch panel works only on TWRP. I will try dirtyracun one more time and lets see what happens. thanks for paying attention to this aggravating problem.
***Update*** I just finished doing dirtyracun process. Problem: Step 14. Enable USB Debugging on your device. Once I flash the RUU ( step 11) The phone reboots to ROM (Viper 4G) with USB Debugging disabled. Due to touch panel issue I cant enable it and finish up the process! Apparently after burning Google down theres no way to enable USB Debug through adb or fastboot. Im stuck!

Yes. Old tp works with new roms, but new tp doesn't work with old roms/recovery.

[Q] Semi Bricked HTC Evo 4G LTE, Please help

Hello All,
I rooted my phone a long time ago and went from the stock rooted rom to MeanRom ICS. I then wanted to try other roms. I use TWRP 2.6 and tried everything to install a new rom. A friend suggested that I S-off my phone to see if that would work. I then tried Moonshine to S-off my phone. Now the phone wont boot at all. I can still get in the recovery and bootloader, but that's all I can do.
Here is my info for Bootloader:
Jewel PVT Ship S-on RL
HBOOT 1.19.0000
Radio 1.12.11.0809
OpenDSP v.29.1.0.45.0622
eMMC boot
Thanks in advanced for the help
First things first, welcome to XDA, and congrats on your first post/thread. Too bad that this is the reason for it.
On to more pressing matters...are you sure that you completed ALL of the steps in order? Also, did you happen to read this thread?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2321072
I'm assuming that you did, but if you didn't, it will be a good help.

Do you have a backup you can restore from recovery? If so, install your backup to get you up and running again. Otherwise, you can mount USB storage in recovery and copy a ROM from your computer to your phone, then flash the ROM. Remember since you're S-on you'll need to install the kernel separately from the ROM. Most Sense ROM's like MeanBean and Viper have a kernel installer built in; just follow the OP for whatever ROM you wish to install.
Also, you must either use Facepalm or Dirty Racun to gain S-off on your phone. Moonshine only works for those on Hboot 2.09/software version 3.16.
You can find links to Dirty Racun & Facepalm in the link in my sig.

Tried the backup I made a few days ago. No joy. I think that my bootlaoders fragged. When I boot into the bootloader, green text for the bootloader saying theres no PJ75Diag.img, PJ75Diag.nbh, and or PJ75.Diag.zip.
Sorry gang for bugging you guys like this. I'm a noob when it comes to this stuff. Thanks again for the help.

All that green text means is that the bootloader is looking for a PJ75IMG file on your external SD card. There isn't one normally there unless you're updating firmware. It's normal.
What ROM's have you tried to flash?

I load the backup, but the screen goes black after the initial HTC boot screen. I don't know what's going on.
I've tried CM 10.1 Nightly, Ubuntu touch WIP, and a few others. Everything seems to do just fine while installing, and then I reboot to a boot loop or staring at the HTC boot screen for a while.
When I rooted my phone, I went from CM 9 to MeanRom. After I went to MeanRom it acted kind of funky. I've not been successful at loading any new roms after that. I think I forced something that the phone didn't like onto it and now its stuck with it.
Try flashing MeanBean. Make sure you wipe properly before you flash it.

Should I go for the newest one? (3.09 or and older version)
The latest version should be just fine. The rom version doesn't change much aside from the fact that 3.09 has the latest changes and bug fixes.

In addition, make sure you follow Mikey's instructions on flashing the ROM since you're S-on for the time being. His ROM has a kernel installer that requires an extra step to install the kernel separately from the ROM on phones that are S-on.

Use Facepalm. It's Windows friendly. I think Bigdaddy619 or another user even has everything packaged up nice & neat so it's ready to run. I've personally never used it but I hear it's quick & painless. Make sure you Nandroid your current setup before you get started.

Ubuntu is packaged in a live distro, you don't have to install anything.

SuperCID for HTC Evo 4G LTE:
Code:
adb shell
su
echo -ne "22222222" | dd of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p5 bs=1 seek=20
After you do this start the other commands
Just take your time do one at a time and read what it says in the cmd window
Sorry to bother you guys again, but it says device not found when I enter adb reboot bootloader. Am I doing something wrong? I do beleive I have all the drivers. Sorry for being a pain, still learning about this stuff.

[Q] Attempting to flash custom rom..

I am quite noob to flashing so I understand that it is my fault if something goes wrong..
My husband volunteered his Evo 4g lte for me to make my attempts. I unlocked the boot loader, though it was S-ON, and flashed TWRP recovery (latest version). It seems my phone was wiped entirely (will not boot into Android) and the backup I made did not "stick".. I made attempts to flash a ROM but figured it would not work since the phone is S-ON. I'm stuck in boot loop at the moment - shows HTC screen then reboots - and my PC will not recognize the phone in any way even if I attempt to mount storage while in TWRP. Am I screwed?
I would settle with being able to get it back to stock, but I don't think that is possible even.. Any advice, tips? If I need to share further information, let me know. Feeling stuck at the moment and I've got to get some sleep so it may be a few hours before I respond.
P.S. I'm on HBOOT 2.10 and was running the HTC RUU update that came out (Sense 5.. etc) if that helps. If my problems have been addressed elsewhere, please do point me in that direction if it would help..

Being that you are hboot 2.10, you must use the TWRP recovery found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2639180
Also, because you are S-on, for AOSP ROMs, you must either fastboot flash the boot img or use flashify or flash img GUI. Both are available in play store. First, install the correct TWRP recovery and get up and running. Then read up on S-on kernel installing. I also strongly recommend getting S-off using the rumrunner method.

Just to add on, I never had luck with rumrunner on the new partition layout, that being said firewater worked just fine.
Sent from my EVO using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Both have worked for me on the new partition. The most common problems with getting s-off seem to be that people don't turn off their antivirus, or they forget to uninstall htc sync before running the utility. Or both.
I don't know why one would want to remain s-on. Just seems like it makes it a lot harder, with no real benefit in return.
Personally I would just rerun the ruu to get back to stock, then get s-off and the right twrp, then make a nandroid before going with anything custom.

Thank you for the response! I have come to realize that doing this with S-ON is probably the worst thing I could have done.. *bangs head on desk*. I don't know if you saw in my OP, but my computer is not recognizing my phone at all, I can put files on a micro-sd (using an adapter).. I know I can use the external for other ROMS, but would the method that you linked to still work for the PJ75IMG file or could I use the version of TWRP that I have to move the PJ75IMG to the internal storage maybe? I'm using TWRP 2.7.1.0b..
EDIT/UPDATE: Okay, I thought I would try running adb fastboot and fastboot through the command terminal despite the computer not displaying the device as a storage device & it not working earlier this morning.. It appears my computer recognized it so I flashed the boot.img for the last ROM that I attempted to flash (SlimKat) and rebooted the phone.. It booted into SlimKat O.O It is up and running now.. So I *think* I'm good to go with that rom?!
If I want to change ROMS (this isn't the ROM I necessarily wanted), what should I look for? Will any ROM work that is for the new partition layout is what I mean? I was really interested in Dirty Unicorn.. Though the husband may appreciate SK!

Yes, any ROM that supports the new partition layout will work. Also, in response to your other question, I believe you have to be S-off to use the PJ75IMG bootloader method. I'm glad to hear that you're up and running.

I'm experiencing some problems with SlimKat and the hubby is really wanting me to flash Dirty Unicorn. Should I make attempts to resolve the problems with SK or can I move forward with flashing the DU rom?
Also, I want to make sure I have the process down that I should do BEFORE flashing a new rom... When using TWRP 2.7.1.0b, would the use of the default wipe feature (that says it wipes cache, etc, but not internal storage) work before flashing that rom or should I go into the advanced options? I assume I use the default wipe feature..

You can move forward if that is your choice. I personally use advanced and wipe data, system, cache and dalvik. However the default (factory reset) in TWRP seems to work as well

I'm curious, if I have Dirty Unicorn up and running, can I use the RUU that was released by HTC a few months back to revert back to the all stock rom? Or do I have to flash something? Just curious.

Though both devices are now running custom roms, would I be able to do S-Off? Would it be worth it in the long run? From what I have seen, it seems that USB 2.0 ports are required or at least recommended. All of my ports are 3.0, are there any programs out that would work for me to achieve S-Off?

I definitely recommend getting S-off. I recently returned my EVO LTE to stock, ran the 4.13 RUU, rooted and gained S-off (again) using the Firewater exploit in roughly a minute's time. I was using 3.0 USB ports when I did it.

Well, I made my best attempts to use Firewater to no success. I followed the instructions exactly and things were looking good.. until it told me that "someone pissed in the firewater" and to reboot the device. I tried a couple of times and had no luck. Does the Android version matter or anything like that?
I'm running on the latest build of the Dirty Unicorn rom if that makes any difference.. Just thought I'd throw it out there again.
