So I was plasti-dipping my Note's rear cover... - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 3

...and then I started drinking. Here the results:

Why would you plasti-dip your back cover......just curious....however the paint scheme looks like Arnold Schwarzenegger's make-up in Conan The Barbarian movie!!!

I've tried using that stuff before and it will eventually start peeling off.

I hate putting cases on my phones, especially something this massive. I felt like the back of the Note3 was so slippery, so rubber coating it was my best option. For the record I love it. The grip is awesome and it makes the whole phone feel more substantial when it's in my hand. The coating also makes vibrate less obnoxious when the phone is resting on a hard surface.
As far as peeling I'm hoping it won't be a problem for a while. I literally went through almost an entire can just on this back cover so it's on there fairly thick. 10+ thick coats lol.

Looks gorgeous. Always wanted to try some sort of coating for better grip on my note 2. Doubt it'll look that good though that looks fantastic

That's a pretty cool pattern. How did you do that...with some kind of template or something? I never heard of plasti-dipping.

Nice thing about plasti-dip is if you get tired of it, you can peel it off and try another color or pattern.

I actually did it with a paper plate. I would hold it over a certain area and was doing short bursts of paint with the spray can across certain areas, alternating white and black til I ended up with an overall look that I liked.
Plasti-dip is cool because it covers really well and you don't have to prime or prep the surface. And as someone else mentioned you can just peel it right off when you don't want it any more.

I had hoped, with a previous phone, that the adhesiveness would have been better with this spray, but in less than a week, it started peeling off on its own.

None so far. I'll let you know if I have any issues but to be honest I don't think this coating will be peeling off any time soon considering how many coats I put on it.

Looks awesome. Might have to try it out.

I love it. It looks like the Vega2/shuttle. Is it just a skin or have you completely replaced the cover? It looks like a very tidy job. I woud like to do this to mine, where did you get the carbon and was it hard to make it fit as well as yours?
Cheers

Lol, it was quite a job. Because the vinyl is so thick, its quite hard to get it into place. This is how i did it:
I ordered a sheet of a4 self adhensive carbon style vinyl of ebey for about 3€.
Once it arived i removed half of it from its paper and positoned it above the vega. Then i put just a small bit of it on the vega, and made shure there were no bubbles by going over it with my fingers. Then i slowly put some more on and kept rubbing it on with my fingers. As soon as you get any bubbles, peel it back again, or youl f it up...
When you come to the middle of the sheet, remove al of the paper an rub it on.
When its tight and nice, get an knife, go along the bezel of the back, so there is a visable line.
Now remove the vinyl again, and paste it back on the paper it came on. Now cut along the line with a pair of scissors.
Now past the vinyl back on the vega like above with the rubbing style.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
Oh yeah, when it finally on, you can stick all the overhanging bits between the bezel with the knife used to make the line, it has the be quite thin tho.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
cheers rozza I will have a go at it myself.
Once again it looks great. The back of mine is a bit marked as I don't really like to use it in its case. With this mod I can use it out of the case without marking the back.
hi rozza,
Are you cutting holes for the screws? In the picture it dosen't look like you have cut any. How are you holding the back on?
Cheers,
Richard
Wirh the origional screws, i ditnt have to unscrew the back of the vega once...

spray painting the battery door?

Has anyone painted their battery door? I've got an extra and I want to paint it white, but I haven't a clue how to do it. I assume sanding since its plastic.
No sanding just use plastidip for temporary yet good looking paint or if you're 100% committed use the plastic bonding paint available at any walmart. No sanding needed and turns out great. Thin even coats with time to dry in between. Post pictures

I did this w/ my Droid Charge using RC Model Spray Paint.
Learn from my mistake on painting phones....... Let it dry!
KORM via the beast known as the Rezound.
amazon has a bunch of color cases for this phone already. Id get a case. however if your up to a real challenge get some carbon fiber from fiberglast.com and go to town. i did an otterbox once, took three tries to get it looking ok. patience is key. best of luck
Yeah, but no color battery doors. I've been waiting for HTC to come out with their red and white battery doors.
Did you ever end up painting it... I just got a spare and and want to paint it buy want to know what you used

Use the plastic bonding paint. It'll work but be patient and let it dry between light coats. No sanding required

How durable are these paints? Will they chip over time?
I used krylon fusion and I think it looks pretty good. Hard to get even coat with no drops on the extended battery where it plateaus though. But all in all not too bad
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk
I spray painted mine. Looks great but the slits for the speakers got covered and muffled the sound. I took a toothpick to clean it sorta worked
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk
Anyone got pics of these? I'm considering doing white on mine, also will this interfere with the antenna since it is located in the battery door
No my antenna works fine
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk
The Krylon Fusion holds up very well just gotta be careful not to do coats too fast or it'll goop up and be soft.
I recently tried this, there was some chipping on the side, but i think that was because i wasnt able to do evan coats on the side. overall it looks great, especially when paired with a red soft gel case that i picked up from best buy the white accents with the red cover looks bad ass to say the least
Jack seems to like it
I'm to scared to try this. Don't u need those gold looking things on the back door to get reception.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using XDA App
My reception has been fine all day. the paint doesnt interfere with the gold ant, considering those are on the inside of the back

DIY NT Case/Disguise!

Unsatisfied with the various overpriced and under-featured armors available for the NT, I decided to make my own.
I wanted it to be capable of freestanding in either screen orientation, provide screen protection during transportation, give access to all physical buttons/ports without removing from case, be affordable to produce, and NOT LOOK LIKE A FANCY, EXPENSIVE, AND EASILY STOLEN TABLET( i live in miami, fl )!!!
Here's what I came up with:

Certainly. Wish I had something more glamorous than a hole cut through with an x-acto, but thats exactly what it is. Added pics of all ports and buttons as well.
Note: The black stuff that you can see in the pic of the usb port is a piece of that foamy, non-slip shelf liner. It does a fair job of keeping the nook from slipping out of the case, while still allowing it to be easily removable.
Another note: I've made another one of these, with black corrugated plastic instead of cardboard, and black duct tape instead of silver. Looks much more... civilized. Unfortunately, pics will have to wait, as the new one was kidnapped by my father for his nook tablet.

You sound like me ... When my kids were younger, they thought I could make anything they needed. Those tablet covers are ridiculously priced and necessity is the mother of invention. Besides, everyone knows duct tape works for everything except ducts . Duct tape comes in so many colors and combined with electrical tape...I bet enthusiasts can come up with some nice looking covers (and still have their tabs protected)
Psst...way to rub in your CM7. Bet you are enjoying it, I opted to wait and see what issues it would have, but I can't say I'm not salivating over the possibilities

Funny, and true. I prefer not to throw money at a problem. I'd much rather throw brains and sweat ( that didn't come out right... :what: ).
I think you made a good decision to wait. I installed cm7 before any of the bugs were discovered. If I'd known, I probably would have held off. I'm experienced with PCs, but quite new to android. I'm salivating as much as everyone else for the upcoming revision.

This is indeed very cool.
I was considering doing something like this but using olive green gaffe tape, 550 card and some black spray paint with a stenciled "n" on it. Kinda like a para-military nook case. Maybe when I get another job (damn you economy, damn you to hell) I'll go get the tape, tape and stencil material. I already have 200 yards of 550 cord and plenty of cardboard.

Alternative white ATT battery cover?

Is there any battery covers with the same matte style like the black note, but for the white note? I don't care for how smooth and susceptible to marks it is. I'm considering swapping out for the black one if there is no alternative.
I don't like the feel of the white back either very slippery.

I had something like this for my last phone (iphone 3gs). Make sure that you take it off once in a while to clean off the dirt that stuck in all that holes; dirt could scratch the surface of the back cover from friction. The look is awesome, btw.
Thanks. Good advice. Its also the lightest case I have.

I find that applying a full body shield that is a wet application type that yields a rubbery like finish is best route. I felt the same way about it being slippery so ordered one and have it sitting on my desk now waiting to be applied. I discovered this by accident when I applied one to my Vibrant and fixed the problem I hadn't intended to remedy. I know alot of people don't like wet type because of the rubbery like finish, but this may be a plus for you at this point, I know it is for me.

First of all, let me be the first one to thank you for doing this. I came from Atrix HD and only thing I miss is the carbon fiber back.
Now, can you please explain how you managed to cut it so clean? Made a template first? I'd love to do this to mine!
Also, do you think that will hold the back glass together better? How thick and durable is it? I know people have had issues with glass cracking but I'd love to have carbon fiber look with some added protection.

Well from start to finish, about 10 minutes.
I ordered the 2 sheets of 4"x8" sample of Carbon Fiber from http://www.carbonfiberfilm.com/ It's the high end 3M stuff used in Custom Car applications and other things. Very good quality stuff. The 4"x8" sheets come with free shipping, where as the next size up is 12"x12" costs $15 bucks but has like $15 dollars in shipping.
It cut very easily with a simple cheap X-acto knife. I used a ruler (well really, it was a piece of Model train EZ Track since I couldn't find my a ruler and upstairs was so far upstairs and I was being lazy. I did two cuts (one long and one short side) to get straight edges using the pattern of the carbon fiber as the guide. I then laid it on the back of the phone to get that size of the glass insert, and cut the other two sides. I still had the original back plastic sticker on the device so I pulled that off and used it as a template for the speaker and camera. I centered it on the carbon fiber, taped it down and then started cutting away at it with my X-acto knife. The first time, I stuck it on the back of the fiber not thinking thus the wrong speaker/camera locations. I actually took 2 seconds and thought about it on the second one.
It's probably the thickness of a Zagg Invisi-shield. I would assume it would give some extra strength to the back glass, I'm no materials expert. I just wanted something with some texture.
Two months later and this had held up like a champ. Better than the zag on the front even. No issues around the edges no Marks on it. Looks great.
