[Q] stuck while switching to from twrp cwm recover - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

i wanted to try the new cm 11 but needed to install cwm and i had twrp. all i read ssaid i could just flash it over top twrp, i did so and have been stuck at samsung loop. im not sure what to do, tried using odin to restore and now im lost. i dont know if i lost root or what but i have no custom recovery after trying to use odin to flash atwrp. i managed to get cwm to install originally but couldnt flash any roms or boot. i was running jelly beans latest build. any help would be great, ive rooted all my pphones but this note 2 gives me nothing but trouble.

You flashed the ROM on twrp or you flashed CWM on twrp? Can you get into download mode? Also, this sounds dumb, but are you holding volume up, home, and power to try and boot into recovery? And download mode is volume down , home, and power.

i flashed cwm using twrp. ya i know about the buttons. i can only get into download mode. i had something like this happen before but ill be damned if i know how to fix it. the info for the note 2 is a mess. every site references the same pages and those pages are confusing to me. i have dyslexia and it gets hard for me to grasp at times.

OK. I went through this on my s3 (same process on the note 2). It sounds like you will need to "Odin" back to stock since something got messed up. And it may have been something not of your doing. I will try and find you the thread on how to do this. What I do is read the thread a few times then write down what the steps are so I can look at that instead of swapping pages on the computer. I will try and post the link in a minute.

This should help you out. If you have any specific questions feel free to ask. Just a note (no pun intended) this will make you start over completely. It will be like your pulling your phone out of the box for the first time. So I would hope that any backups you had are on the external SD card and I highly suggest you backup the SD card before starting anything. Here's the link.

[Q] S3 stuck at ClockworkMod Recovery Screen

Hi,
I have just rooted the S3 using odin. All installed ok. Installed ClockworkMod recovery and selected the backup ROM option. Phone rebooted in to recovery and the backup failed.
Used the volume keys and selected reboot now and hit the power button and the menu dissapeared leaving the Clockworkmod logo in the middle of the screen, nothing happened. Click the power button again and the menu comes back. Click the front button and nothing happened.
Tried turning off the phone and it goes back in to the recovery menu. Pull out the battery and put back in and goes back to recovery.
I can't select any option in recovery menu and can't reboot the phone normally. Any ideas?
To confirm v 5.8.4.1 is installed.
Sorted!
Noticed my error. I was using the Recovery mod app from the play store and not the CWM app installed by odin.
Repeated the odin procedure and booted back up fine.

Repeat the flashing procedure. You are using the new flashing procedure right?? Not the old one.....new one is waaaaay quicker and relinquishes the need for CMD

Follow the exact procedure from when you first rooted the S3 that fixes it then don't use the recovery rom app from the play store. You should see an app called 'CWM' only use that.

[Q] doing a back-up ? root first?

i have a bone stock ATT note with CLF6?
Im wanting to try a different ROM?
I realize that i need to do a back-up first.
Do i need to root before i do this back-up.?
thanks alot. .
ps... I cannot get this into recovery mode.
I hold down the power and volume up buttons, but all it does is vibrate off and on.
thanks again.
Can you get into download mode?
Sent from my Nexus using xda premium
First thing is to install cwm touch reconvey by using Odin. Put phone into download mode to do this. Then boot into cwm recovery by holding volume up and down and power all at the same time. Once it vibrates, let go of the power button while still holding the volume keys. Then create a backup to sd card ( external of you have one). Then go ahead and root by either flashing super user or any rooted ROM.
Oh yeah, to put phone into dowlas mode, hold volume down and power then hit volume up key when prompted.

You can root it, then run a titanium backup in order to backup all of the important data.
Also, under settings, there should be a backup option, which you could restore from the stock ROM.
After rooting, and then getting CWM or TWRP installed, you can do a NANDROID backup....which will allow you to back up essentially every bit on your device.
Note that I've never seen a ROM that required CWM, but there are ROMs that require, or reccomend TWRP. That might be the recovery of choice.

now I guess that my next step is Rooting stock CLF6.
ICS 4.0.4
Have to find the link for that now.
Another question is, when , after rooting,
will that end any OTA updates?
meaning JB when it come out in the USA for AT&T.
thanks again
Yes that will end ota updates once you flash a custom ROM. But you can always return to stock later if needed and be angle to do any update that comes out.

To clarify, just rooting alone will not stop ota updates. It is flashing a custom ROM that does.

Link given is for rooting gingerbread. OP states that he has ICS. Bad info. If you want to root your phone then go here. It is the easiest method for gingerbread or ICS.
http://rootgalaxynote.com/galaxy-no...y-note-sgh-i717-icsgingerbreadeasiest-method/
If you want to backup your phone you need to be rooted and/or custom recovery first anyways. To get into recovery you hold BOTH volume up and down with the power button. Release power button after text appears. Here you can do a complete NAND backup of your phone. This will backup your entire ROM except for your modem. If you install Titanium Backup or like app you can then backup individual apps or settings.

and Ray.....
nice to run into you again..
you helped my long time ago to get my HTC HD-2 from T-Mobile up and running on ATT. Walked me thu it over the phone. Thanks again for all that.
Now whenever STILL... I go to car shows and look at GTO's.... I remember agoatamer!!!!
Thanks for remembering Jim. Goodluck with your Note. Phones have come a long way since the HD2.
By the way, agoatamer... I I see your sig says " Samsung I717R Note
UXLF4 Rogers Deodexed Stock ICS ROM"
You like that ROM.... I What's so special about that one? I do you recommend it?
Thanks..
Well, other than my phone is a Roger's Note..... I prefer the stock build. Tethering is enabled by default. I can switch between 3G, 4G, and LTE. Much easier to unbrand compared to the ATT version. Stock apps are inverted by default. nothing really fancy. Just nice and stable. I put it together myself but couldn't get the help into getting it together in an all in one installable zip. Sam.jh has a like version from Telus here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1801689
Hopefully when JB is released he will deodex and zip that one up too.

[Q] I'm rooted but can not get to recovery mode.

The other day I used the method tomsgt123 show in YouTube video with vroot. Root successful. However when I then downloaded goomanager and I installed to openscript, then I Rebooted to recovery the phone would not reboot properly(I got the green DROID dude and a message that phone can not boot to normal mode.) I then tried several time manually enter recovery mode to no avail. Same screen every time. I can get the phone operating normally by tapping volume down. I'm thinking that I need to fix this so my root will be worthwhile. Can someone help this noob out?
Thanks in advance.

Do you do a battery pull? When you turn the phone on, hold power and volume down (?) to boot into download mode. Then just cancel. It will get you out of that loop.
I found this suggestion too, Im not sure if that is from pulled battery state or not
hold the power button and the down volume key and it should ask you if you want to install a custom os or not and then you just hit cancel and it will boot regularly

Ok, I might have missed something but, the point of rooting is not to just be able to say you are rooted and restart your phone? As I understand it you should reboot to a recovery mode that then allows you to flash rom's and themes and other cool custom stuff. And most importantly allow me to delete bloatware. I don't seem to be able to do this with where I am right now.

There is so much amazing information on this forum that it is hard to know where to start reading and if you did a teary in the right place. I took a leap of faith after reading and watching videos. So I guess my next step is to read more about safestrap and a few other areas I've been pointed towards.

[Q] Can't restore backups and other issues

What's up guys, I'm running into an unusual issue here and could really use some guidance. I tried searching around, and the only solution I KNOW will work is to start from scratch, using odin to go back to stock, re-rooting, and then slowly trying to work my way back to where I was before the FUBAR.
So, I was recently using LiquidSmooth 2.9 and went to make the leap to 3.0. Flashed everything, got confirmation that it went through ok, and then I just got stuck at the Samsung Galaxy s4 screen, nothing happens after that. So, I went to restore from the backup that I took earlier and I got a failure to restore.
Not to worry, I figured, I'll just reinstall from the zips for 2.9 that I still had on my SD card. Well, I do that and everything seems to work fine with the flash, but now I'm STILL stuck at the Samsung Galaxy S4 boot screen and STILL, nothing happens after that.
Any suggestions on what to do here? Flash a new kernel? Am I stuck going the long route and having to Odin everything back to stock and then re-root, etc?.

Id download the latest liquid file again just in case that file was corrupt somehow.
That's usually been the problem lately from what I've been seeing. You really shouldn't have to Odin.
Also the kernel shouldn't matter but I always flash kts latest kernel with liquid but others don't and have no issues.
Grab that file again
Do a couple wipes in recovery

Downloading... Do not turn off target !!

Please Help! I have a 4.3 MJ7 Rooted Galaxy S4 running Hyperdrive. I bought the phone this way. Yesterday, I tried loading an OTA Hyperdrive update. It gave me two options - 1. Boot into Recovery, 2. Reboot and install. I picked reboot and install. When the phone came back on it is stuck in, Downloading... do not turn off target !!. It says at the top in small red letters - Could not do normal boot. ODIN MODE.
I have taken battery out, turned back on holding power, volume up, and home at same time to get into recovery and it just comes back to Downloading... do not turn off target !! screen every time. I just want to get this to power back on and I am unfamiliar with Odin and how to proceed. Please Help! Thank You.

I could be wrong here since I'm no longer a hyperdrive user...
I think when it tried sending you to recovery to install the update, that wasn't for SafeStrap. So when it did the reboot into recovery deal it was trying to send you to some form of custom recovery. Hence the error you ran into.
Like I said I could be wrong. Maybe ask the people in the hyperdrive thread. They'll know
