How To: Verizon S4 running T-Mobile service with LTE, 4.2.2 with many 4.4 apps - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

How To: Verizon S4 running T-Mobile service with LTE, 4.2.2 with many 4.4 apps and features
This took a lot of time for me to figure out. There were a lot of questions I had to read and a lot of testing of trial and error on my part. Many of the actual ROMs, apps, etc came from other people, which I will name and give credit to. Everything is working for me. LTE, call signal, wifi, hotspot, NFC, IR, EVERYTHING!
I've done some reading on building custom ROMs, but if any of you have more knowledge on an easier way for me to package all of this together I'd be happy to post something for all of you to flash to save everyone's time.
I'll post all of the details, everything I did, and what was needed, but only if anyone would truly benefit from it.
Anyone interested?

This is a VERY frequently asked question. Having someone who actually did it successfully post what's needed would be very helpful.

This is what I have and have tested. I will mention if I believe other options will work, but it does not mean I have tested the other options. I do not take any responsibility for your phone or data. You read this for educational purposes only and anything you choose to do is at your own will.
With that being said, I never bricked my phone or even ran into any serious problems while figuring this out. The worst I had was testing out different deodexed roms that I had modified, which some would give a black screen on boot. When this occurred, I simply powered off or pulled the battery. I then powered back into recovery, wiped data/cache/dalvik, then reinstalled a ROM that worked. You shouldn't run into any of these problems at all, since I've figured it out for you. Always back up what you currently have before testing anything.

Black 16gb Verizon S4 SCH-I545 with the original MDK modem. I will not go into detail on how to root or install custom recovery, as that was way too long ago for me. I will give you the links to the forums and tutorials that I used to do this. Please verify that your equipment is either the same as mine or that it will work with these tutorials before using them. If you use them successfully, please THANK the author and contributors. They all have worked hard to get us here. Otherwise, find a tutorial that works for you.

What is needed (I’ll get into the HOW TO later, but make sure this list is covered first):
1) A rooted Verizon S4 SCH-I545 model (other S4 models might work, but I have not tested)
2) A custom recovery (I use ClockworkMod 6.0.3.2, there might be an updated version and others might work. I have not tested any other option)
3) ROM: [ROM] [G.E.] [4.2.2] [AROMA] [VZW] GoogleEdition.v6.0 09/11/13 by Dubbsy and hlxanthus
Find it here and make sure to THANK them… http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2343355

Find it here and make sure to THANK him… I will not post the direct file links without permission, so please find what you need on his thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2508334
Feel free to test and use whatever is posted there, but the below is what I was able to use and what worked for me.
PreBuiltGmsCore (Google Play Services 4.0)
Velvet (Google Search)
GoogleHome (Google Launcher) Although I’m choosing to use the latest version of Nova Launcher Prime, this worked well.
Gmail
Keep
QuickOffice
Keyboard
Hangouts 2
Wallpaper
5) These other apps for the 4.4 “feel” or due just to my personal preference.
8sms (Stock Messaging, KitKat) on Google Play
ExDialer & Contacts on Google Play
Android 4.4 KitKat Dialer (theme used with exDialer) thanks to Terrance Veigas which posted at this link. http://www.techniciastudios.com/android-kitkat-dialer-exdialerapk/
KitKat Clock on Google Play
6) The modem of your choice. Remember, I am stock MDK and can return to it at any time. I have chosen the MJ7 modem ONLY. DO NOT USE the modems with NON-HLOS unless you know what you are doing. Using these can potentially affect your root.
Find it here and make sure to THANK Surge1223

Now for the HOW TO:There are two different ways to approach this. Depending on your knowledge, one may be easier than the other. I’ll go into more detail later when I have more time and as questions come in.
1st option: Install the ROM but avoid selecting the apps listed above if possible. This will help so that you can install the 4.4 apps later on without having to delete the preinstalled ones from the ROM. After the ROM is installed, install the apps from section 4 and 5 listed above. You might run into some issues with installing apps in Section 4 which is unlikely, but that’s why I prefer my 2nd option.
2nd option (my preferred choice): Open the deodexed ROM and replace the specific apps inside with those you have downloaded in section 4 listed above. Rezip the ROM and flash it. Download and install the apps listed in section 5 after you have installed the ROM. (I suspect there might be questions on details from some of you, but I will edit and add these in later when I have more time.)
During the installation, make sure you select and install the apps not listed in the sections above (4 and 5) that you might need. I believe Samsung WatchON is needed for IR. There might be other better options out there that I’m not aware of.
I selected the KT-SGS4 kernel by ktoonsez during the installation of the ROM. This one works great, but you are free to try any of the others.
After you have finished with one of the options above. You will need to flash the modem of your choice. Remember not to use the modem with NON-HLOS.
After this, go to the Phone Info app which was included in the ROM. Select Phone Information, then change the setting to LTE/GSM auto (PRL). Close the app. You may need to turn airplane mode on and off, only once. I did not have to though.
You should now have your phone running 4.2.2 with many 4.4 KitKat apps and features. Please feel free to ask any questions, offer suggestions, and THANK those above who provided everything we needed. Please do not criticize anyone involved. This is only meant to help those who were looking for a solution, plus it’s my first tutorial.
I’ll add more details as I have more time. I’m working on modifying the ROM listed above with all of the files needed to make this an easier process for all of you to install, but I will have to ask permission from the original ROM builders before posting. I do not know when this will be completed. Give me some time.
Thanks.

oh yeah VZW is CDMA, but now all of their smartphones have GSM radios as well. They do this so that their phones can be used internationally, because there's only a handful of CDMA carriers in the world.

[Q] MOTO XT882 - Need Root & ROM info

As an American living in China ... I'm hoping that SOMEONE here has experience / advice on how to:
root
and flash the ROM
for my Motorola XT882
Yes, I know it's only sold here in China ... and it seems cool - except it won't be anywhere near cool if I can get the d'mn thing flashed.
There's no market, no ability to add a Google user account, and a ton of crap software that motorola only intended Chinese literate people to use .... the applications were developed in Chinese ONLY regardless of the OS setting.
Really hoping someone can tell me ... can I use the ATRIX root process?
Can I use an ATRIX ROM?
Thanks
I picked up an xt882 last month when I was in China. I am now in Sri Lanka, but hope to use it back home in America next month.
I was able to get the Google system framework and applications on there by reading Chinese forums, translated to English with Chrome. I don't know any Chinese, but was able to figure it out. Here is one of the guides I used (just search for GMS or google pack and you should find similar guides and download links):
first Google hit for: DiyPDA独家分享XT882官方GMS补丁
...sorry, since I have no posting history, I am not allowed to paste any links...
Anyway, it was totally annoying not to be able to associate a Google account with the phone, as well as not have maps/talk/gmail/etc. I had tried installing APKs of some of these programs backed up from my older Android, but some (like gmail/talk) require the Google services framework. Others, like maps, will work sideloaded like that (but without latitude, places etc).
My xt882 is also rooted. I followed the directions here:
first Google hit for: moto XT882手机GMS包,G网补丁,ROOT软件« 听月3G
Lastly, I have 6 finger (supposedly you can get it up to 10) multitouch, up from the default 2... which really isn't all that useful. I followed the directions here:
first Google hit for: 修改配置文件让XT882直接支持10点触控(已上图)
I am still trying to figure out how to get a clean ROM on there. I want to get rid of motoblur, obviously, as well as all the Chinese crap they put on it. I don't think I have clockworkmod recovery properly installed on it, though I do have ROM Manager... and root is working.
From what I've read, I would not try to use any Atrix stuff on it.
Anyway, it is just a pain to try to read through these forums translated from Chinese, but I am certain there is a lot more that can be hacked.
Best of luck! Please let me know if you figure out how to get a better ROM on there.
BTW-- I was getting 300K/s sustained throughput on China Telecom using that phone tethered to my laptop. I was always very happy with China Telecom's service.
So nice to hear from you
Hopefully we'll merit our own SECTION like everyone else
I'm rooted now too (a few hours) http://bit.ly/getrootnow is how I did it.
The guy also has the tools to download to do it ...
I also have the Rom Manager - but could not FIND the clockworkmod anywhere - can you send me via email the APK?
Parker AT FusionLimited DOT com
Coool.
I've got to crash ... but I figure tomorrow I'm going to be able to back up my current ROM, and then figure which one I want to put on it instead.
Skype: ParkerFairfield
i did some research last night and came upon this page...
first google hit for: 【机锋rom组】9月3日全球首发XT882 Clockwork Mod Recovery
i got the apk off there and installed it, giving me an app called system recovery. it requests root and allows me to install clockworkmod recovery, but ... though i can click the "install recovery" button and it seems to do something, then says "install success!", it doesn't actually install it i'll email you the APK. please let me know if you can get it working.
im running rom manager premium v4.3.3.0, but i am afraid to flash clockwordmod recovery from that, as it doesn't list the xt882 on the confirm phone model dialog. the closest is atrix 4g, or maybe the droid3 global. i'm not going to mess with that until i see some confirmation that it would actually work.
let me know if any of this helps... i'll keep you posted.
it would be nice if we had a section for the xt882, but i think more people need to get it first! i wonder if motorola will end up selling it outside of china.
---------- Post added at 11:58 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:48 AM ----------
BTW, any idea what they are talking about on these forums when they say "brush" ..? or, at least, when chrome translates whatever it is they are writing into "brush"?
---------- Post added at 12:39 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:58 AM ----------
i got recovery working. you have to pay attention to the third step (plugging it in). i didn't think it would matter, but it does!
doing a backup right now. where can we find roms now?? hmmm...
So, I've emailed a guy named Quens ... who seems to be a MOTO XT882 pro!

我是一个做IT的美国人,驻在中国好久,有顾问公司-www.fusionlimited.com . 也是,我刚刚买了一个xt882.
I've already ROOT the phone - but I need to make a backup ROM and I can't get CWM Recovery to run correctly ....
我一定有ROOT,可是我需要做一个backup ROM。我的cwm 不认识我的手机。
I saw your page at www.bit.ly/motoxt882 and want to ask - does your APK allow me to
1。 make a ROM backup of my current phone?
2。to install other ROM?
我看到你的网页 - www.bit.ly/motoxt882 想问你,你的apk让我:

What I'm not understanding now is - what's the point of the MOTO XT882 BOOTSTRAP.apk file .... is that the 'base ROM' for the phone? Or is that the file that works with the CWM Recovery application?
you can get recovery on there using MOTO XT882 BOOTSTRAP.apk ...
install it, then run the program "system recovery" and follow the directions. it is pretty straightfoward. be sure your phone is plugged in, as per step 3.
i performed a backup of my phone earlier, but i have no idea how to get a new ROM on there.
keep me posted. thx!
Moto xt882 dual SIM ?
sorry probably this is not the right thread, but.. just a simple question for who alreary has a xt882:
I'd like to be sure about the following 2 things before buying it:
1- Is it dual SIM ?
2- Are the 2 SIM active at the same time? ( than you can receive calls on both sim without switching manually, even if via software, between the two SIM) ?
thanks a lot and sorry again for the question out of the thread scope ...
treqq
yeah, it's dual SIM... there are two slots for SIMs, one CDMA and one GSM.
both are active at the same time. not only can you receive calls to either SIM without manually switching, but you can also place calls from either SIM. that is, when you place a call, it prompts you which SIM you want to use.
i tested this in china just for fun. it felt good to have my phone on two networks

Hi guys!
I'm interested in getting this phone, but I'm not living in China... Can you recommend some way to get one? Maybe some online Chinese store that ships to Europe?
Thanks
Marco
This is a great phone-I followed the advice here and now it's properly rooted and has access to Google accounts for market etc.
BTW I was able to purchase it retail (it's also available online) at a China Telecom store.
My only disappointment is that it does not seem to support GSM 3G, only 3G via China Telecom, which I guess is no surprise given they are the main carrier selling the phone.
Is anyone aware of a dual SIM android phone that supports China Unicom's 3G? I don't care about 3G on Telecom so much (even though I hear they have the fastest speeds)
gametheorist, when i used this phone in china on china telecom, i had a CDMA sim. when i went to sri lanka, i had it on dialog's 3g network with a GSM sim. now i am in bangkok and have it on 3g with AIS, again using a GSM sim.
it should support any 3g GSM network. as far as i know, it is not locked down to any one carrier. were that the case, i would have never bought the phone!
Hi Larfo,
That's very good news, I guess that means that China Unicom's 3G is just somehow not compatible? When I look through the mobile data settings for GSM, I didn't see any real options that indicated that I would be connected via the net (let alone 3G)
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
in sri lanka, i had to add a GSM access point as well as configure some proxy settings. not all applications worked, nor did tethering. i think those issues stem from their network, not the phone, however. the service was unbearably slow, on top of that.
in thailand, i also had to add a GSM access point, but it doesn't require any further settings (eg proxy, etc). everything works except for tethering (both the built-in wireless hotspot functionality, as well as the third-party wireless tether app which requires root).
the real test will be when i return to the states in a few weeks. it will be interesting to see how well i can interface it with tmobile and ATT. also, i am curious if vzw or sprint will give me a SIM so that i can use it on their networks.

Xdark ICS - R800x Calls working - No Data

So I flashed the xdark ics rom and then flashed the CM9 CDMA fix and Carrier fix files to see if it would work. And I was able to use the ROM to make several successful calls and even activate via the *228 but was not able to use any 3G data. Wifi, calls and pretty much everything worked great. My questio is if anyone here would be interested in taking a stab at getting 3G data working? I do not know if its just a matter of editing the build.prop or the phone apk. But just wanted to let all R800x users know that at least calls are working so technically you could use this as an every day for calls only and wifi.
Here is the link to the ROM. I am not the creator of this rom and take no credit for it whatsoever. That goes to xdarkmario.
Here is the link to the link.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1729250&page=15
Here is what I wrote in my post regarding my outcome of flashing the said files.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is from post #150 (page 15)
So I have a CDMA R800x. I flashed this ROM and the CDMA Fix from Atarii and the Carrier fix from other ROMs and I was able to activate my phone via *228 from Verizon. I do not have 3G data, but I can make calls and wifi works when i flash the Doomkernel ICS wifi modules.
Would you be willing to look into the 3G data aspect of this ROM and see if its possible to get that working on this ROM?
Alsok this ROM is pretty cool so far. Very Clean.....
The carrier fix / CDMA fix were made to make any GSM CM9 ROM work on the R800x
Please niote, first time I use the dialer I get a com.android.phone error, but then it dials and works fine.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I would like to get peoples thoughts on this as to how we can get 3G data working.
If I'm not mistaken the guy hacked up like three different roms and slapped them together. And I think it was partially the sony beta which will essentially screw us and put us at the point we are still on in finding a way to turn non aosp/aokp based roms for cdma. Maybe some new minds can figure something out for us abused X plays
I don't know what the basis of this ROM is but I did flash the CM9 CDMA fix and was able to make calls. Just no data. So that at least kills one of two problems right there.
Sent from my R800x using xda premium
So I guess no one is interested in attempting to get 3G data working on this ROM? Calls work just fine........ just need data working. Would it be something as simple as some build.prop edits or at most a phone.apk messed with.... anyone?

[Q] Neophyte needs pointers on ROM

Using Samsung Galaxy Note from Tmobile, the SGH-T879, a.k.a SGH-i717, Android version 4.0.4, Rooted
About me: I am not a developer or programmer; but, I am savvy enough to manipulate/configure Windows computers, remove malicious software and generally troubleshoot many common problems on a PC.
What I need to do: I need to record cell phone conversations at the line level (not speakerphone) and am beginning to believe that isn't possible on Android 4.0.4. Someone told me I might need a custom ROM that allows line recording. I don't understand ROM and its relation to the phone as well as I do Windows OS and its relation to the Computer; but, I want to learn so I can solve this call recording problem.
Can someone point me in the right direction for learning about this?
Sir, there are apps free from the GPlay Market for this...take a look, although you have to be rooted for some apps but you stated you are rooted.
A custom ROM is not needed.
Again, do a search via mighty Google and see any thing points you to the Market GPlay.
google voice has this built in. just press 4 while in call.

Thanks for the reply.
I have been working on this problem for two weeks+, have tried many call recording programs and had exchanges with their tech support. NONE will record from line on this phone. Their final answer is to just use speakerphone. I have had exchanges with others and found that not one has reported a successful LINE level recording with stock Android versions above 2.3.5. I have also read in forums where some were able to record but it broke when their Android versions were upgraded or they got a newer phone with a later Android version.
The recording programs offered on Google are, in my opinion, misnamed voice recorders as they record only when the phone is on speaker.
Please, is there a good place on the 'net where I can learn about ROMs?.

Thanks, but I don't use Google. I want something that runs entirely within the phone.

First read the thread linked below at least twice for help on understanding how to flash custom ROM builds etc.. Reading it twice will help make sure you grasp everything well prior to flashing your Note.
[Road & Ref Map]: Galaxy Note Super Everything Thread (I717) 9/11/2012: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1740367
Moreover, once you understand the steps needed in order to load different ROM builds etc.., below is a link to an excellent Gingerbread 2.3.6 XLA2 ROM by DAGr8 that has the line recording built in. That said, I still use it as my "go to" ROM when not trying out ICS & JB builds, due to the built in line recording, as well as the ability to enable Ad-Hoc WiFi support by switching out the wpa_supplicant file.
[ROM]XLA2[04/02] SAUROM Projekt 'One Rom to Rule Them All: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1522942
Also, if you do load SAUROM RC7 + RC7.1, search this thread link below for support in order to fix the alarm force close issue, and to add "Equalizer" from the play store to increase volume.

On a final note, deploy the xda search feature to find more tips & info...
Hope this helps a little...
Best to all,
R
Thanks so very much for the reply. This will get me started.

Hey Alex, don't thank me, d'oh! I somehow skipped right past your first OP post. If you have a Samsung Galaxy Note from T-Mobile, "the SGH-T879 model", and not the SGH-I717 model from At&t, SAUROM may not work as intended, and you should post in T-Mobile Galaxy Note section, not here. That said, I'm not sure what would be best for the T-Mobile Note as far as line recording, but you should post and search in that specific sub-forum for help.
Best to all,
R
Yes, it is the T879 and thanks for the heads-up.
I don't see a T879 or T-mobile Galaxy Note section here. Where is it?
Thanks.
It isn't here - its an altogether different forum. Just go to the main list of supported phones and find it there.

[Q] Rooted - how far do I need to go now?

Hi all,
This isn't a "stir the pot" kind of question and I don't intend to start a "why root?" discussion... I've read as many other threads as possible and I'm just not clear on a few things. In a current "why do you want to root?" thread, many responded that they rooted so they could remove bloat ware, use wifi tethering, etc. Those are all the things I want, but I'm not sure how far I need to go to get those. Will I need to flash a custom ROM or can I do what I want now?
So, here's what I've got and what I hope to get:
I bought I DNA from a guy who wanted to "upgrade" to an iPhone 5. It did not have the 2.0 software update, so I was able to unlock it, S-OFF, and root it. I can use the SDK and adb, but primarily to follow instructions. Beyond that, I don't really know what I can do now. I had Cyanogen on my trusty old Nexus 1 and on my Xoom tablet, so I'm not afraid of custom ROMs. But, I have to say that I'm pretty pleased with the stock DNA ROM. Except for a few things...
1) What I would like is to get rid of the silly games which I won't use. I don't know enough to know if I can, with the stock ROM but root access, remove those. There's no uninstall option, but perhaps there's a way to remove those with root access? Or would I need to flash a custom ROM?
2) Remove the "entitlement check" on the wifi hotspot app. Since I'm running on T-Mo the app won't, of course, allow activation of the hotspot. Silly... I've read several threads on using SQLite to do this, but they're from last year and either the process has changed or it no longer works. I have read that I can use another app, which is an option. But if there's a way to run the stock app, I'd go for that.
So, you can see I don't really want to change much. If I can do these now, with what access I've got, please let me know (and how, please!). If I need a custom ROM, I see three options it seems. CM (which I've always liked, but seems not yet ready for DNA??), Viper and Hatka seem to be the options which are popular. I'm open to guidance here. Not a "this is the best ROM argument", but which would you recommend for my minimalist needs?
EDIT - I mentioned "three options" above, but that was just based on my reading in the past two weeks. I see there's a new M7 rom and that thread already has over 100 pages in about a week, so it looks like a popular option as well. Apologies if I missed somebody's work and I'm open to any pointers and experiences.
Thanks in advance,
Ross - in the beautiful mountains in Northern Arizona.
I guess if you know the name of the apk of the games, you can use root explorer to remove them from /system/apps but keep in mind we do not know what else it may break and then you may have to ruu back.
if you want to try a rom, try the sense 5 port by newtoroot
To remove some of the user / system apps like twitter or picas, i search 'root uninstaller' in the apps store, and the one with a green trash can has been quite reliable for me ^^
I personally like the minimalistic touch to the M7 / Sense 5 Rom. Easy to get my news, use gps, play music WITH beats on bluetooth/speaker, etc. But stock is really good to, no complaints there.
Thanks and an update - I ended up flashing the M7 and, like you said, it's nice. And an unexpected bonus is that the included wifi hotspot app works just fine with my T-Mo service, without any modifications at all.
I've got everything I wanted and it was easy, once I made the choice.

Root Tether

I realize there are multiple threads on this. But unless I'm blind - which I may be - I can't find a final solution.
I can not tether on my rooted DNA. WiFi Tether does not work. I have tried multiple versions. I don't know if it makes a difference, but the MSSClamping option is not available. Even still, it won't start.
I've tried 1-Click - that says it requires a subscription.
I've tried FoxFi. That sets up some VPN tunnel then doesn't start.
Any leads for a successful solution?
I have several rooted Roms posted with native tethering enabled, since most 3rd party apps no longer work on kit Kat.
So, the best solution, which works, is to run a Rom with native tethering enabled for all users or modify the Rom you're running to do the same.

Thank you. Unfortunately I'm in an area cursed with the Verizon Trolling of custom ROMs. Anything other than Stock Root results in SMS sending issues.
I'm not a programmer by any stretch, but have been modifying phones for a while based on all of you wizards' work. Is modifying the current ROM a "simple" task?
A little research has shown there is an "entitlement hack" for other phones. Does that hack exist for the DNA?
Still searching...

Just a stab in the dark fur you but.. I would think that sms/mms problems would be from your setup(apn, system selection etc.) and if big brother is tagging you I suggest a firewall.. That said were all pretty much on or used Verizon /Santods rom my tether works great..
Im going to start a thread about every ones ideas..

Thanks a bunch. You may find a thread of mine buried deep on here somewhere about this problem back in Feb/March. I had just gotten my DNA and ended up with the issue of not being able to send. It became a general consensus that VZW was testing some sort of blacklisting of custom ROMs in certain areas. I've not heard of a solution yet. I've tried multiple ROMs, all with the same outcome.
I look forward to your thread and whatever brainstorming comes from it.
Thanks!

Are you saying that "Tether hacked for all users" on the NuSenseSIX ROM will allow me to use what appears to be native tethering... and I won't be charged an additional fee from my wireless carrier?
Thanks for all of your hard work.

That's correct.
Any love on this? Someone point me in the right direction to get sms working on a ROM other than stock?
