[Q] tf700 broke... replacement??? - Kindle Fire HDX 7" & 8.9" Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

hey guys... im a frequent reader (not poster) of the forums and have a simple question. my mom broke my tf700 so i sent it in to squaretrade and the are reimbursing me $499.99 bc they can not fix it (first time using squaretrade and im very happy i insured it through them).
What should i replace it with? i loved the tf700 but i cant see myself spending $400ish on a devices thats a year and a half old.
i was thinking of the kindle fire hdx 8.9 bc that seems like the best bang for your buck at the moment. It has the newest and best hardware out and is getting great reviews. the only problem with the hdx is that the bootloader isnt unlocked and who knows if it will eventually be (i have faith but i dont wanna drop $400 soley on faith). if i get the hdx it is a must that it would have to be on a custom rom as i cant stand the mojito rom amazon uses.
i was also thinking nexus 10 but the same problem as the tf700 comes into play... $400ish for a year old device. it would be a big disapointment to buy it and have the nexus 10.2 come out next month at CES. i understand that tech is always gettin better and ill always be waiting for the next upgrade and yada yada yada but a year old tablet at $400 is a little pushing it. The upside is that the device wouldnt need to be unlocked as it has the best rom on it (stock kitkat).
so pretty much my question is what would you buy if you were on the market for a tablet today???
PS- what is you guys opinions on 7" tablets?? i think 10" is where the swet spot is but if you guys can persuade me otherwise.

AMAZON has the ASUS TF701T-B1-GR 10.1-Inch Tablet

Is NT an impulsive buy or wait?

Hi,
I know the new device is still very new. Although, I'm disappointed with lack of rooting now, I'm still in favor of this over Kindle Fire for a tablet in this price range. Another disappointment is no doubt the internal storage lock, forcing users to sideload only 1GB without additional SD card. Here's a few questions for those of you that have the device and been playing with it.
1) has anyone sideload VTC's stream app? I like to be able to stream video and music to tablet
2) where is this rumor PagePerfect [improved stock] pdf reader? I was at the store briefly on Thur and I can't find this app installed??? is this a vaporware BN hasn't push out? I prefer reading pdf over epub, i can't stand reflowable text that kills design.
3) anyone think we can hope NT can run latest Android v4, if rooted [a big if right now]?
Wait for NookTab to get root then buy. Nook Color took a while before magic happen. NookTab just came out today. Give it a couple weeks top. There are plenty of smart people here.

I second this. As is it's a great tablet, but wait a few weeks for root. I think it'll happen before that though. No evidence to back this up. Just opinion.

I returned mine and picked up a tab 7.0 plus. I have another nook tablet in the house so I will check in to see how development is going, but if you can swing it, the Samsung is worth the extra cost IMO

I was planing to return my NT too. I just ordered the tab 7 plus but my daughter thinks she will keep the Nook. I suggested that she look at the old tab 7 as it is a full hardware featured and rooted tab for under 300.
Captn
I am literally sitting at my computer, trying to decide whether to take back my NT and maybe get a Tab 7, or even hold on to my DS7 until a good AND affordable 7" tablet comes out. But the NT is sitting on the table, looking at me, tempting me to open it.
Here's what I'm thinking...
1. The Tab 7 is still too expensive at this point. I've seen some online for around $300 but most are still in the $400 range. Yes, I could get it cheaper by getting it from one of the phone carriers but I don't like being locked into a 2 yr. plan, especially the way tech is changing so fast. Since I don't use stuff like cameras and GPS on my current DS7, I'm not sure the $150 difference is worth it.
2. I'm thinking about just staying with my current DS7 but there is no comparison between screens and battery life with the NT, which I found out are major considerations when it comes to tablets. The NT is (somewhat) lacking in apps compared to my full-blown DS7 tablet, but it's all about the important hardware, in my case, screen and battery life.
3. I've been playing with my wife's NT this weekend and once I found I was able to sideload apks from various Android sites, I've got hers pretty much set up the way she likes. One of the biggest problems with the NT is the lack of B&N apps. With Go Launcher and downloading apps from Onlyandroid.com, which has pretty much everything I've previously downloaded from Android Market, it's as useful as the DS7. All this and it's only been out a few days so you can only imagine what the techies are going to be able to do with the NT in a few months.
I took the bait and bought a NT earlier. I started to sideload some apps and to my surprise, I'm liking it. The only annoyance is the default interface, and once this is rooted [keeping fingers crossed], the sky is the limit I think.
IMHO, the hardware upgrade from NC makes NT much more usable.

It's $150 more and at a point where quad core, higher res 7-8" tabs are just around the corner. If I'm going to spend $400, I'd rather wait 2 months for a killer one at the start of a new generation.
If the Nook Tablet gets root and a stable ICS ROM, then it's a warranted, no question impluse buy. With this HW, it'd run ICS perfectly and the lack of physical buttons would work perfectly.

True quad cores are right around the corner, but I bet you it will be at least 6-8 months before a 7" quad-core is even ANNOUNCED, yet alone released. Most people buying the NT want a smaller device anyways, so if they really want a fully functional 7" the galaxy tab is probably the best out there, and will be for a while (at least until the 7.7)
FYI, best buy is allowing returns until January 24th because of the holidays, so you can try a tab 7 plus for two months, and if you like it keep it, or sell it if something better comes out (out the NT gets rooted)

That's what I plan to do. Wonder why there is no Galaxy Tab 7+ forums yet here.

And another thing worth noting, because of the extended return policy, consider it a price guarantee too. If the Tab 7+ drops in price in the next 2 months, just go complain and I'm sure BB will give you the difference, or you could just return it and rebuy it.
I decided to keep iti

I 100% agree. I tried the NC and didn't like it because it was too slow and the speaker was horrible. Like you, the more I'm using it, the more I'm liking it.

Unfortunately quad cores only has marketing valie at the moment. most apps are still single threaded and taking advantage of multiple cores is not an easy programming task

You didn't say what bothered you about the Kindle Fire, or that's what I'd suggest. If you spend more then you're getting into devices that were intended to be tablets in the first place, and the whole set of arguments changes.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a Tegra 3 7" tablet leaked or announced between now and CES.
BTW, tablets are ineligible for that holiday return policy.

This is untrue.
For holiday 2010, BestBuy's Holiday Return Policy didn't cover computers and tablets.
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/2008-Gi...ns/pcmcat166500050003.c?id=pcmcat166500050003
For holiday 2011, no exception is mentioned.

The main stipulation is that it has to be a "gift purchase," so probably would be wise to not mention you've been using it for 2 months and got tired of it.

To wait, or to wait longer... (TF201 vs. TF700T)

I'm still waiting for an order of the TF201 to actually go through for me and now I'm beginning to wonder if that’s a sign. I'm sure I'm not the only one who is now stuck in the uncomfortable situation of decided whether to continue trying to get the TF201 or to suck it up and wait a few months for the new Prime to come out.
Asus is trying to market the TF700T as some sort of Transformer Prime HD, but, due to the TF201's issues, this looks like a "quick fix" model leaving the early adopters of the Prime behind. I've noticed some arguments going for both sides and I was wondering if anyone had a clear argument for waiting.
Not a lot of information is out there right now, but to me the argument is as follows:
Is paying $100 more and waiting ~5 months worth better GPS/WIFI/BT, Resolution, & front-facing camera?
I would appreciate any input from current TF201 users.

I am in the camp where I do think this TF700T is a bug fix release. I do not care for the higher resolution screen which may introduce other unknown issues. The current Prime is an excellent tablet. The only issue for me is knowing there is a design defect with the back plate. I may never use GPS but I do not know what I will be do in the future and that is what pisses me off. You will need to decide if that is a big deal for you or not.
So, I got my prime today from amazon. Then i noticed the tf700t post. I should be pissed but I'm enjoying my prime too much. And I don't know the specs of the tf700t yet. If its a tegra3 with 1920x1200 then its worth it.

Well i currently own the prime and its awsome I would rather have my prime then wait over 6 months for the next one just to get basically a better screen resolution. The screen on the prime is already very crisp and clear and you probably wont notice that much of a diffrence between this screen and the new ones screen. As for gps, its really over rated because you really arent going to be using it al all. Wifi and BT preformance is pretty good on the prime. So basically your paying 100$ more and waiting at least 5-6 months for GPS and a higher res display
Well judging by the many faults I'm finding with the TF201, I think I had my fill of going on hype buys from ASUS.
Show me ICS and I'm done.
Unless you really want that higher res display and you actually are going to use the GPS, I would just get the current Prime. By the time the TF700T launches, there will probably be faster quad cores
Five months in the tech world is not "waiting", it's a generational change.
Should I buy (insert any product here) now or wait 5 months for (next generation product) has been the same question since the first Macintosh came out, it seems.

I take you don't have a Prime and you have been overly influenced by the issue discussion that ignores the 95% of happy users. Love my PRIME!
Grab that Lenovo!
I have and love my Prime and I am getting the keyboard dock in the mail tomorrow. Am I upset about todays announcement? Not at all. Everyone that is *****ing needs to get over themselves. ASUS runs a business and if you think the tech you purchase today isn't outdated two weeks later, you are surely misinformed. Relax!!
I am going to enjoy my prime and dock for the next 4 to 5 months and then sell the TF201 and upgrade when it comes out in Q2. The dock is said to work on both models.

I don't think there's any "good supplier" because the defects are because of ASUS, not the stores. So I guess it just depends on whether you're lucky or not. I got a 32GB Grey from Best Buy that had absolutely no problem and now my 64GB Grey from NewEgg is also absolutely perfect. Besides 1 dead pixel that fixed itself after a couple of hours.

I say you wait for it so when it finally comes out you can asked yourself the same question about the TF700T cause the super duper optimus prime x3 gets announced. it's a endless cycle bud
If the 700 comes out 5 months from now, it will be absolutely clobbered. It packs specs to compete with January-March/April devices. 5+ months from now, even higher resolution, more RAM, A15 processors, and similar spec bumps will start coming out. The 700 has 3 months to come out before it's too little too late.
I ordered I Transformer Prime on 12/23, didn't receive nothing and now they're announcing the "new" prime??? I'd love to resist the urge the get "this" Prime and wait some more MONTHS, but i've waited nearly 2 month. Can't resist any longer.

Cheap tablet

I'm going to buy one... Thinking about the n5zero (5inch) or the nova 7 paladin (7inch), I'm buying just for playing some games, read some book, and flash a lot of roms.... I'll have any problem to flash roms or root? These things came with the boatloader locked or not? I'll have any problem with this? Or it's going to be normal and easy as a normal device? (I'm not a noob, I know how to root, flash roms... I have same experience... But just to be sure...)
Ah, if you have another idea for a nice tablet in the same price (60- 120 dollars) it will be welcome...
Thanks a lot and sorry for the bad english...

Wait until later on in the year, around April - May. nVidia and ASUS are releasing a tablet for $249 with Tegra 3 (Quad-Core, of course), 1GB of RAM, and it's got a nice resolution of 1280x800.
The idea of cheap tablet may sound tempting, but there wont be developing community backing it up. So in the end you have a device with same android version forever.
Go for big manufacturers like asus, samsung, motorola.
Refurb Nook Color can be had for $129 and makes for a nice little tablet, I'm running CM9 nightlies on one as we speak, it's got a really good dev support / following.
I'll second the nook color. If you can get a refurbished one for under $150, it will beat the pants off of anything else in that price range. The display is one of the best at any price, and the build quality is exponentially better than any of the Chinese tablets.
You mention flashing custom roms - the cheap Chinese tablets don't usually have any. If you are really lucky, the manufacturer might put out an update or two. The nook color, on the other hand, has dozens of custom roms and tweaks already and plenty of people still working on more. Check the nook color development section yourself and see what I mean.
I have a arnova 10 G2 , I brought from carphone werehouse for 135 pounds.
I have added all the google staff to it ( archos hate google ) its fab .
Is it a cheep tablet , yes.
Do i look at Emails etc only on it , yes
Does it have the same power as my Desire...a wee bit less!!
Wil I put ICS on it.. one day !!
You should consider the Kindle fire. I'd also suggest looking at the htc flyer. Its a little above your price range but I think it's a great tablet. At $120 your goIng to get what you pay for, a really lousy tablet that will be a waste of money because it sucks so much. Better to spend a few extra bucks and get a useable tablet.
You should save your money, at that price point you will get an unusable POS that no custom ROM can fix.
If you can find an BNIB HP Touchpad for $100-$200, then I would grab that sucker. It runs 1.2 ghz by default, and can be overclocked to 1.7 (1.9 works too, but its unstable), and it's dual core! It's super fast with android on it, and currently has a couple unofficial builds of cm9 running smoothly on it. If you don't want to wait, the hp touchpad is a great choice. Gotta get it brand new though, as they've been discontinued and "repaired" units often involve cracks next to the speaker.
Some no name tablets will see little to no developer support so watch out for that. For your budget I would consider a Nook Color refurb. It has pretty decent dev support.
I have a no-name tablet with nice specifications for the price (Cortex A9), but it doesn't have community support. It's a pity because you can get bored easily.
kindle fire can be rooted and use android
Yeah.. I'm getting the kindle fire... The touchpad is to big for me..

Nook Tablet, imo.
I have one. $250, double the specs of Kindle Fire.
It's fully cracked now, I'm running a fully-working CM7 on it.
Also, I think ASUS' $250 Tegra 3 tablet is a myth. They just teased it to stop people from spending money on Nook and KF.
And if it ever gets released, that price won't be awesome at that point anymore. By that time those specs won't be anything special.

[Q] Need Help Protecting My Prime

I need help protecting my Prime. So my daughter is always asking to "Play" with my Prime..I just can't let that happen..not yet. Yesterday she turned 9 and she received a whopping $400 in cash from friends and family, now she wants to buy a tablet like mine. I would like to keep it Android of course and around $300 -$350. Her mom has a Kindle Fire ,but the UI seems a little to difficult for her to navigate (Carousel). She does have experience playing with her mothers Samsung Fascinate phone and I see that Best Buy has the 7" Samsung Galaxy Tab on Sale this week. Is that a good option in your opinion? Or should I go after an Original Asus Transformer or maybe something else?
Your opinions are appreciated, and I Thank You....so does my ATP

We gave our 3 year old our Dell Streak 7, and bought our daughter the Vizio tablet for Christmas, that way they no longer ask for our two new primes.
Make sure you buy one with Gorilla glass. Also, the nook Tablet is $199 and is far superior to the Kindle Fire. Great choice for a 9 year old.

Nook Tablet all the way. bought one for my girlfriend for christmas. she kept asking to see my prime... and at 23 yrs old, she just doesnt have the maturity to handle it yet (god i hope she doesnt secretly troll XDA) lol
i rooted her Nook Tablet, and stripped the Barnes and Noble UI in favor of straight gingerbread, then got her golauncher set up how she likes. kindle fire seems to have more support, but the Nook has better hardware all around.
Get your kid a library card, they don't need expensive toys.

hahaha these days they'll just get tormented and made fun of if they don't have cool gadgets!
My 12 year old cousin has the 64gb 3g iPad, the iPhone 4s, the nintendo Wii, and Im pretty sure she got a 3DS as well.
I want to strangle her.
as for the OP, there really arent any super protective child proof cases for the prime yet, as far as i know
Nook tab has crap processor.
Sent from my tablet thing with XDA Premium.

[Q] What tablet to get right now?

In light of the imminent iPad 3 launch I was seriously considering getting one.
When I told a friend he asked me: "Why an iPad?". My only answer was "I guess I'm brainwashed.".
Thus, I decided to browse around for Android tablets. I quickly found that there are very many of those.
I have an HTC Desire HD and am quite happy that there are still ROMs being made for it. I would like a tablet with at least a 10" screen. The price should be less than $300. What can you suggest that has good chances of being supported (on XDA) for a long time?
I've tried both kindle fire and nook tablet within the last two weeks and I'm keeping the nook. For $250 I had it home, rooted and running cm7 in less time than it took to drive home. I believe its a good value right now.
Isn't that like 7" only? I'd much prefer something bigger because I want to read PDF files without stupidly scrolling around!
Well, i have reveived my order from SpeMall for Ainol Novo 7 Elf two weeks ago, all 5 pieces of ELF are works fine and looks great in black... it's my second time to deal with them, i bought a tablet from spemall by the end of last Oct. i must confess i had doubts placing an order from a chinese website, but i had a good experience with them. Very nice.
It's a nice little machine, all works well for Internet surfing, music, youtube, skype....I think it will burn to the ground the kindle fire and the nook tablet
The iPad 3 will be well over $300. What are you comparing Apples with?
The only 10" Android tablet worth getting now is the Transformer Prime. Period.

+10000 The Transformer Prime is hands down the most incredible Android tablet out right now.
To the OP, what are you primarily looking for? Is it more important to have a tablet that is 10"? Or a tablet under $300? Or are you willing to come up from that price for a tablet with better specs?
Hate to break it to you, but you won't find any new 10" tablets that run for under $300. Most start at $400 and just go up from there. Unless, I guess, you search for refurbished, used, older models, etc. Otherwise, if you want to stay under $300, you are looking at a 7" tablet.
