Google has just officially released the Google Now Launcher on the Play Store and made it compatible with all devices with Android v4.1 or Later, including Google Nexus devices and the Play Edition devices (Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4, Nexus 7 (2012), Nexus 7 (2013), Nexus 10, Galaxy S4 GPe, HTC One GPe, Moto G GPe, Xperia Z Ultra GPe and the LG G Pad 8.3 GPe). You can Now Install directly from the Play Store which is easier to get future updates.
GNL Key Features :
Google Now on your home screen - it's easier than ever to get just the right information at just the right time.
Just say "Ok Google" - when you're on your home screen, just say "Ok Google" to trigger voice input. Then say your search query. Or tell your phone what to do, like send a text message, get directions, or play a song.
Faster search - tap the search box and you can enter your query immediately.
Easy access to your favorite Google products and services, like Gmail, YouTube, and Maps.
Larger viewing area - the status and navigation bars are now translucent, so your wallpaper pops from every pixel, and is even visible when you expand your apps drawer (when supported by device).
Intuitive wallpaper picker - select any image that's stored on your device, or in the cloud. Position and preview your wallpaper before you set it.

If your device is not supported, you can try the APK link below.

Thanks! No graphical glitches! Seems this is N10 ready :victory:!

Sorry for that, I just added a Google Drive mirror

I honestly have no idea what they could have changed because the GoogleHome APK does next to nothing. All the code for the GEL is actually in the Google Search APK. All this GoogleHome.apk file does is provide a bridge to Google Search and give you the option of running the GEL. The reason the file is 12 MB is basically all the wallpapers that it includes. That's really it. I mean, obviously they changed *something*, but I'd be shocked if there were any performance improvements or bug fixes. Very strange indeed. Thanks for posting, nonetheless. It's always good to stay on top of the latest versions of stuff like this.

I don't know but mine seems snappy, at least compared to what it was, and really seems to be working well on my Nexus 10

Well that's good, then. Who knows, maybe there is some kind of code in that APK other than being a bridge. We'll probably never know for sure. haha

From Reddit :
http://www.reddit.com/r/Android/com...he_new_google_experience_launcher_gel/cdxfeho
This is completely misleading and even plain false.
This app is just a stub that has no code other than a few lines to call the real GEL which is inside the search app (which was not updated with KitKat). There are no code changes between this and v0.9, so the changelog seems to be pulled straight out of the rear.
You will gain literally nothing by installing it.

That is interesting. I wonder why it is working better for me. I will play for a day and see if it starts lagging like it did before. If not then the answer had to lie with a change in 4.4.1. Maybe a small code fix that improve performance. I will probably go back to another launcher anyway, but not until I test this well. Perhaps a framework tweak?

There's no code change. And even if there was, it'd only be to the invoker of the launcher code within search, which wouldn't do anything to speed up its actual operation.

Seems about the same to me.…

It is definitely getting better but it just is not smooth enough yet. Need to wait until it is officially pushed out I think.

KitKat 4.4.2
Will this work ok with KitKat version 4.4.2?

Feels faster for me too, but this also applies to chrome on 4.4.2 now. Especially when surfing porn-sites.

When I scroll pages it still seems slow. I am on a Note 10.1 2014 rooted but stock. When is scroll home pages they are bright for about a second then they dim to a normal brightness. It doesn't do this on my rooted S4 running 4.4.
Any tips on getting this to run more smoothly?
Sent from my SM-P600 using Tapatalk 4

No lag in home screen or inside app drawer on 4.2.1. But app drawer open and close lag little bit.

Has anyone noticed that this update has borked the icon layout on manta?
Before I had 8 columns for icons all neatly laid out & spaced well, same for the dock.
But now I've only got 6 columns and it looks terrible!
Sent from my Nexus 10 using Tapatalk 4

Yep, same on N7. Danger of running an unsupported launcher, I guess.

Yeah the new search apk screwed up my N10 and N7 as well, I rolled back to the previous one hopefully it was a messup on their part and itll be fixed

Lousy Facebook

On my Galaxy Nexus, both the Facebook app and m.facebook.com present the full "Timeline" view with cover photo and links to About, Photos, Friends, Likes.
On my Springboard (running ICS and "high resolution" mode), I get a pared-down view with only cover photo, buttons for friending and messaging, write post and share photo. I am not able to browse any other aspects of one's profile unless I load the desktop page.
Any idea why Facebook has LESS features on a tablet than on a phone? Has anyone managed to force the full mobile Timeline view to work?
Don't know what would make the difference. They both come up the same on my phone and springboard. Have you tried Friendcaster though? Way better then thee actual Facebook app.
Okay screenshots. Here is the public profile of a local politician who I haven't friended, but her permissions allow lots to be shown on her profile so she makes a good example.

Note how the GNex version has About, Photos, Friends, Likes. The MediaPad version is missing the entire Timeline layout, and has only her About page - no links to see her wall, photos or likes. When I do the same for people who *are* my friends, I get the wall with no links to About, Photos or Friends.

Both screenshots are from the Facebook app, same version, latest from Google Play. Neither is a browser shot.
Notice in both shots there is a three-dot menu button on the taskbar. That would not be there if I were viewing it from the browser.
but touch.facebook.com looks the same like your screens....so fb app only display touch fb site
Nonetheless, the problem is that on one device it's displaying all the correct links/buttons and on the other it isn't.

There we go, that's more like it.
The thing is, our devices are the same dimensions as the Nexus 7. Chances are any app broken on ours will be broken on Nexus 7, no? Hopefully that gets the devs' asses in gear. Although if the fixes only work on JB, we're still out of luck.
Due to an unrelated matter I had to change my Facebook password. Upon signing back into Facebook, all the Timeline elements started showing up again. Strange, but happy that I finally have the full feature set again!
I have a problem with logging in to facebook with any app. It works from the browser, but friendcaster, the official facebook app, and any other application that gets news from facebook crashes when i want to login. I use cm10 rom, does anybody else have this problem?
Stock is fine. Maybe someone broke an important API in CM10?

[APP] LMT Launcher (Pie control)

This is cool !! Similar to Pie control on PA roms.
Watch the video to see what it does - if you like it, get the latest version and follow the install instructions.
Once installed, go to menu - Set Gesture Input and check number 2 (Nexus 4, etc.)
Reboot may be required, after that it is smooth.
Please note the OP says you must go completely to the edge of the screen to activate and can be a little tricky at first if your phone is in a case. Enjoy !!

This is seriously a great find. I haven't been using it too much, but have it all set up and like having the option to use it. And I was expecting some interference while swiping, but that's nearly nonexistent.

The more I use this the more I like it. I've put it on my Nexus 7 as well and then removed my nav bar giving me more screen there too.
One question: I'd like to put my app drawer as a long press of my home button, but I don't see any associated process when I look in "Activity." Does anyone know what the actual name of the app drawer is, or where to go to enable that function?

I know on Apex (and I'm assuming Nova) you can set a gesture in the home screen to open the app drawer.
I always set mine to swipe up, like the old school android app drawer.
If you can still use your hardware buttons, you can also set the home button to toggle the app drawer/homescreen in most launchers.
Been using this on and off for a almost a year now. Sometimes I'm in love, other times it gets in the way.
I'm using LMT along with Swapps (free on play store), which is a perfect combination. Now, I have no reason to open the app drawer and my homescreen only contains a weather widget.
thanks
interesting app , thanks

New Features - Android JDQ39 (4.2.2_r1) AOSP changelog

For those really longing to read through the endless change log of the latest update. It has been published here: http://www.funkyandroid.com/aosp-JOP40C-JDQ39.html
Thanks to Funky Android for the find!
Post any new features you find!
*I have found that the animations are a bit more pronounced & they seem to be smoother & generally more uniform.
*I have also found that in the Gallery app, there is a filmstrip mode that is found by pinching out of a picture. When in filmstrip mode, you can now use a swipe to delete the image & then immediately undo the deletion just like when you swipe to archive or delete email in Gmail.
*The play store now displays how much time is left until an app install is complete.

What do I know. Been using PA with Sony's album app myself.
Looks like you can long press bluetooth/wifi statusbar buttons to toggle them now, without having to actually jump into settings.
Is the wallpaper chooser different? More compact and quicker access... I actually haven't spent too much time on 4.2.1 - and it was mostly PA.
But, did we always have a libgoggles_clientvision.so? I think not.. Looks like they're setting up for it.

EDIT: I just realized how dumb I sounded.. scratch the above comments - goggles, not project glass - and the wallpaper chooser seems no different.
My N10 seems... snappier, but this could be placebo. Memory usage is around 500MB currently, which is extremely lower than I'm used to (but then again, this is on a clean factory install).
I'll go install all my apps and then see what happens

So it appears that I have less RAM available (around 1.2GB usable, whereas before on 4.2.1 I had 1.6GB, on custom ROM anyway). Memory usage is still around 400-500MB idle for me though.
There seem to be quite a few security fixes too (including one where you cannot activate USB Debugging unless you're the primary user... nice... )
Best one I think is a fix due for a vulnerability (exploit !!!) of the Exynos discovered in those very XDA forums by alephzain on the S3.

It was mentioned on a changelog somewhere that Google reserved an extra 380 some MB for the GPU, something along the lines of it being able to fragment userspace RAM before when the GPU needed extra memory.

Swift key has good auto correction. I don't think it has the clipboard function though.
Swype has clipboard function. It's my favorite keyboard. I found that Swiftkey would sometimes lag when swyping which would lead to errors. They have some themes you can use and adjust the height of the keyboard to suit your fingers and size of phone, which is good with the Note 3 since too high can be hard to manage and a big screen.

When I said clipboard I also ment clipboard history also. The stock Samsung clipboard has literally everything you have ever copied into the clipboard and you pick which one you need. I'm curious what the practical benefits of maintaining a long history of your clipboard would be? I'm always on the lookout for the smallest positive adjustments to my daily usage of my mobile device.
Work environment. The ability to maintain a long list does not require maintaining a long list. In addition, this application syncs with multiple devices.

I found an app app called Clipper that maintains a clipboard regardless of the keyboard you are using. They say that you can have "more than 20" clipboard items, but I'm not sure if that would be enough for your purposes. Maybe give it a try?

Twenty items limit
Hello.
I just wanted to say that I truly hate the limit of the clipboard.
It is as ridiculous as the Burst shot limit that has been painful to many Samsung users. (only twenty items?????)
I have lost four valuable items in the clipboard, because it forces me to save a screenshot in the clipboard. This is another thing that I dislike about TouchWiz. My thread: http://forums.xda-developers.com/general/help/disable-screenshot-to-clipboard-t3318563

i just found the right app for this situation. its called native clipboard, you can search it on google play. just double tap to activate the clipboard, it helps me alot.

Yeah, since Preview 3 it has been very stable

I haven't tried yet but I'm willing to have a go Tomorrow. Preview 3 is indeed stable, but some apps don't function and sometimes lags with other apps (yes chrome, you). It's a preview so it's expected, hopefully other apps will be fully compatible by the time preview 5 / first release.

Apparently Google's version of force touch was removed in this beta release.
Just got the update notification. Excited to install it. DP3 had quirks but mostly stable. Works for me as a daily driver.

May not want to flash this if you use Android Pay. Multiple reports of problems, even though Google says it works. https://developer.android.com/preview/support.html#dp4
Anyone using android wear?
Was running preview 3, maps and messenger didn't work. Can anyone confirm if it's fixed....
Thanks

Using preview 4 for a good few hours now. Running pretty nicely. I like it.

I am still getting "Gmail has stopped" when trying to add a new account. Anyone else seeing it? I have uninstalled update, cleared cache and app data, and not had any luck.

DP3 was decent, had a BT issue so went back to stock. DP4 seems good so far, hopefully this is a functionally solid build. I love the notifications and status bar quick setting changes in N.
Wow.
Always yummy to have another N Preview!
Recent Apps keeps showing old searches I did on Google. I have to keep clearing them all the time. Does anyone have the same problem?
I experience quite some lag when tapping the home button. Around 5 seconds before my home screen shows. This was not the case on preview 3.
Edit: Problem seems to be caused by Apex Launcher.
