[Xposed][MOD][Android 4.4+] SMS, USSD, tethering and native SIP for Nexus devices - Nexus 7 (2013) LTE Android Development

Xposed module to enable SMS, USSD and native SIP dialing on Nexus 4, 5, 6, 7 2012 and 2013, 9, and 10
I've created an Xposed module to give you a very simple and secure way to enable SMS, USSD and the native SIP dialing function on your Nexus 4, 5, 6, 7 2012 and 2013, 9, and 10. With this module you are now OTA-ready, as you don't have to revert to stock before applying an OTA, because you will not get the popular checksum error, because you don't have to flash anything (except Xposed) and thus don't modify any important file(s).
After this long time I should maybe give an update about the current status.
I red every single reply to this thread now and see there are some Nexus users having problems mainly with MMS. Well first of all I never talked about enabling MMS, but I enabled it anyway, because there isn't a difference to SMS in terms of how Google+OEMs+Providers blocked them.
That means the only reason why some of you are still not able to send and receive MMS messages is, because the provider blocks them at network level. So even though your tablet is able to send them, the providers tower doesn't even think about accepting such a message from your device, because you have a special contract.
The second problem I noticed is something I encountered myself. You will always get two pop-ups when you receive an SMS when you receive an SMS if your ROM already has an SMS receiver module like the SimpleMessageReceiver.apk that is installed by default in Googles Stock Android.
To solve that you have two options: Freeze the app in the app storage list or remove it completely. I recommend to freeze it, because a nonexistent file (after you removed it) would break incremental OTA updates.
I dropped the support for the flashable ZIP files, because they are just so uncomfortable, not cross ROM compatible, break updates, can lead to very ugly boot-loops on SOME devices without any reason. In fact, even if you copy an original framework apk from one stock Nexus 7 to another, you might even get problems there. Even though those files should be exactly the same, because the built number and md5 is the same. Very very strange and I don't have the time to investigate this.
In case you really - for whatever reason possible - don't want to install Xposed and this module, and still use the flashable ZIPs, @GuyAdams still continues to support them here. But it seems like this is for the SMS function only. You decide.
The Xposed module SHOULD work on ANY Android version, with ANY installed ROM on ANY device that is missing one of the above mentioned features. If it does not re-activate those functions on a device, you can still post it here, but Nexus devices will have priority.
If there is an important question for me you can mention me "@makuser". I currently don't have that much time, but I see @teddy0209 is already helping out a lot. Thank you very much for that! I would look out for a direct mention of my name in case anything else is unclear.
If you have any other questions, feel free to ask them
How to get it
If you don't know the Xposed Framework click here to read about it in the Xposed Module XDA-thread.
You will find the Xposed module in the Google Play Store and in the Xposed repo.
Watch it in action

Waiting for upload finished. Thanks

Are you using TWRP or CWM to flash it? Any other modifications?

bootloop
Bootloop for me, although it did briefly make it to the lock screen the first boot.
I'm on rooted stock 4.4.1 using TWRP 2.6.3.1.
**EDIT: Got it to work by fixing permissions in TWRP immediately after installing.

stacked bootroop too.

Me too 4.4.1 KOT49E TWRP 2.6.3.1
Edit.
Revert bionic patch and now work.

I've a Nexus 2013 LTE with CM 11 based on KOT49E and flash zip with CMW but on reboot system hangs on the cyanogen logo .. I had to reinstall the rom ... Help!!!

After installing SMS Mod the Nexus remained in Bootloop, I installed 2013_KOT49E_Revert and nexus started normally. Reinstalling the SMS Mod brought renewed Bootloop.
Then I installed 2013_KOT49E_Revert and directly behind the SMS Mod Now the MOD works

What i have done:
Scenario:
KOT49E rooted
ElementalX kernel 2.3
4.4 qc-optimized_bionic patch http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2546120
4.4 qc-optimized_dalvik patch http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2546120
Working without problems.
Flash KOT49E SMS (OP). Reboot and bootloop.
Solution (almost for me)
Flash KOT49E Revert to Stock in the OP. Reboot and verify.
Flash KOT49E_stock_revert.zip http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2546120
Reboot an verify.
Flash KOT49E SMS (OP) again, reboot and working.
As i want test qc optimized i re-flash both patchs in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2546120.
Working !!!
Good luck

Hung on me too... Stock KOT49E+ElementalX 2.3. Installed and cashe+dalvic wipe.
*But I was able to get it working by:
1) Boot TWRP (power+vol up) and ran the uninstall zip.
2) Restart -- everything looks normal.
3) Restart into TWRP and ran the install zip again.
...now it's working!

Isn't this basically trying to do what the other "SMS enable" mod does, except you know, not actually working???
The one that actually works and wasn't started by the guy with the post count of 4 is here:

Is it possible to upgrade it for KOT45H?

while surfing huawei china forums I found this custom Rom (http://cn.club.vmall.com/thread-2182114-1-1.html)
Did any one tried it .. and if yes what is your feedback about it ?
I haven't tried his newest ROM B008, but I have tried several of his older modded ROM for the X1. Issue I have is that I can't get google play store or google services to work. I've tried varies version of goole play store and google service framework, but never could get it to work. Split view is nice...but it isn't automatic, you have to manually select the windows; not as good as Samsung implementation, but better than nothing.

it is sweet, i m using it, only 2 points to note before flashing it:
1) u need to be already on the official B008 rom (otherwise u will get the write to cust error)
2) the bootloader of your X1 must be already unlocked (if not u cannot flash via ADB)
for those using non china 4G sim, u may also get android.phone.com FC-ing during initial boot, no amt of wiping DATA or Cache (of phone itself or apps e.g. contacts, phone etc the usual sugg when u google the problem) will work, in this instance, simply switch to airplane mode, proceed to connect the X1 to your wifi and go abt dong all the updates via Huawei app store, i m not sure which update cured the problem, but when I switch off airplane mode after that, the FC disappears .. YMMV

there is actually a very simple workaround for google services (other than google+, which there is another solution), and it doesnt involve 'hacking' or meddling with system files, rooting is not even needed (although KangVIP rom comes pre-rooted)
because even on china roms, Huawei has actually implemented the google framework within, all we need are the correct apps, simply launch the default Huawei Store (App Centre) and search for Google Play, GoogleCalendarSyncAdapter and GoogleContactsSynAdapter. After installation of Play, just launch it and install other Gapps u need from there.
Hi all,
Small point to note, somehow Google always translates the Chinese word "shua" literally as the verb "brush" but it actually means the verb "flash" in this context.
Note that translations of "shua ROM" will end up being "brush ROM" instead of "flash ROM".

Sorry, I really have no idea what I had done to result in the FCs disappearing. In fact, I wasnt expecting it to be.
My original intention was to play around with it and conduct some experimental tweaks since I was already on it before reflashing to get rid of the FCs.
One other thing that may have caused the FCs to go away is Xposed framework, you can try installing it.
The attached file below is an old version, install it then update to version 2.5.1 via the Xposed app; I also installed the App Settings module (version 1.8) for per app DPI setting. In fact, this is the tweak I wanted to try on EMUI 3.0 B008, it worked on EMUI 2.3 B010 and I was hoping for the same favorable result on EMUI 3.0. It did.
It was after the above that I re-enabled mobile/data and discovered to my surprise the FCs were gone.
YMMV.
Unfortunately I couldn't make it so I'm back to use EMUI 2.3 B010.
Thank you for suggest me some methods.
ps / I got sme results. with Australian Boost sim is worked but Japan Softbank and Singapore StarHub SIM is won't work.

Clean up my HDX 8.9 LTE from "Kindle-Soft"

Hi,
I´m on 14.1.3.0 firmware with my HDX 8.9 LTE. I rooted the device. Installed Nova Launcher, Xposed Framework, HDX Module, Safestrap, a.s.o.
Now I´m on it to clean up the device from all "kindle" and "amazon" soft. Has anyone an idea which system apps have to be on the device that i can use my services from google (gmail, calender, sync, a.s.o.). Maybe there is a list of it?
The best for me is an Gapps Rom for 14.1.3.0, but i don´t think this is available here?
Cheers

You are playing with fire removing amazon apps from stock os. Before nexus and other roms came along I ran with a configuration similar to yours (no safestrap) and identified various amazon components that were annoying and/or aggressively ran in the background consuming resources. Many could be frozen but there were often unforeseen consequences. I had a couple scares with bootlooping and failure to boot that I was fortunate to recover from. Many 'kindle' components are baked into Fire OS and can't be easily removed/disabled.
My suggestion is to install a different rom. Nexus is very stable and gives a clean android experience. CM11/12 are great as well. Given you are on 1.3.0 I would suggest ditching Safestrap in favor of native twrp opening many more doors and, perhaps most importantly, a solid path to recovery should things go wrong. Although this is probably obvious, all remnants of Fire OS are removed with a different rom (aside from low level stuff you don't care about).
As a bonus you don't have to mess around with intalling Gapps with any of the roms currently available; it's already built in
Thanks for your really forthcoming infos. On Nexus i haven't got support for my mobile Internet (3g/LTE), right?
When i install CM11/12 i need to upgrade from 3.1.0 to 3.2.3 but i habe absolutely no idea how? I do habe a stock 3.2.3 but this is a .bin file - how do i flash this? Or can i flash the New Rom.ZIP in twrp anyway?

To the best of my knowledge there is no explicit mobile support with nexus. If you need reliable 3g/lte then your best bet is to stick with stock until confirmed working 100% in CM11/12.
The 3.2.3 bootloader update posted here is flashable from within twrp or using a utility like flashify. However, I believe it assumes twrp (or cwm) is your primary recovery. I have no idea if it would work using flashify with stock recovery and safestrap. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable can comment on this. You might want to send a PM to ggow.
Set the 3.2.3 .bin file aside for now; you don't need it.
Last I knew (from this post) you had safestrap installed. Is that still the case? You really want to get safestrap out of the picture unless there is a good reason for retaining it. Make sure you know the correct procedure for uninstalling safestrap and restoring your preferred rom.
If you already have twrp installed *and* known good backup of your current system then you could move forward with the 3.2.3 bootloader update and then install CM11 which I believe works with a locked bootloader (recognizing it may not fully support 3g/lte). I believe the current CM12 builds do required an unlocked bootloader. You can unlock but it is not always a straight forward process.
removed safestrap, backed up my device and flashed Nexus. Works perfect...only LTE is Missing
I think I try CM11 next. Thanks for your support!

There's an "unofficial" release of Nexus in the original thread with LTE compiled and it works quite well, alternatively CM11 LTE works great (on my Apollo) i'm sending and receiving SMS, haven't really tried calls yet but have used Facebook messenger to make and receive VOIP calls
EDIT: My bad, it's actually on Magic Beanz http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=59043532&postcount=73 which I would recommend over Nexus anyway (as long as you can get TWRP going).

May Factory Image Android Security Update Is Live

The Nexus 6P goes to version (MTC19T)
According to Google, "The most severe of these issues is a Critical security vulnerability that could enable remote code execution on an affected device through multiple methods such as email, web browsing, and MMS when processing media files."
In total, 25 security vulnerabilities have been addressed, ranging from critical to low in terms of their assessed severity. 24 of these fixes affect Nexus or Android One branded devices. Google also stresses that there have been zero reports of any devices actively exploited by these fixes, and that their platform-level security protections and service protections like SafetyNet make the risk of actually being affected low. A quick summary:
Exploitation for many issues on Android is made more difficult by enhancements in newer versions of the Android platform. We encourage all users to update to the latest version of Android where possible.
The Android Security team actively monitors for abuse with Verify Apps and SafetyNet, which are designed to warn users about Potentially Harmful Applications. Verify Apps is enabled by default on devices with Google Mobile Services, and is especially important for users who install applications from outside of Google Play. Device rooting tools are prohibited within Google Play, but Verify Apps warns users when they attempt to install a detected rooting application—no matter where it comes from. Additionally, Verify Apps attempts to identify and block installation of known malicious applications that exploit a privilege escalation vulnerability. If such an application has already been installed, Verify Apps will notify the user and attempt to remove the detected application.
As appropriate, Google Hangouts and Messenger applications do not automatically pass media to processes such as mediaserver.

Was checking for factory images all day, then flashed Dirty Unicorns as a secondary in MultiBoot...while waiting for ProjectFi to activate - BAM - images available to download.
Just manually flash vendor, cache, boot, system
Booted to recovery
Installed Super SU 2.68, franco r16 (i do not want to encrypt so this will do for now), and then xposed, now Android is upgrading

I flashed the factory image off Google's web site. Well everything but the Bootloader, Radio, user data, recovery and all is well.

Unable to flash in recovery showing error 7 ???
This "update" is junk. It doesn't fix the picture compression problem that people have been complaining about for months. It doesn't fix the battery drain. It doesn't add VOLTE. It doesn't add the OnePlus gallery app or music app that was added to the OP3 and the OPX. It is basically the August security patch and that's it. LAME. Someone also mentioned that it adds 2 icon packs. Neat.

How did you judge about battery drain problem so fast! The update is by no means small. I looked at all the files in the patch and they have almost touched all aspects of the ROM. Like many have posted, if the device did not come with VoLTE, there is a very slim chance we will get it. More than a technical problem, it is a lengthy process.

Same problem here! (TWRP 3) First got a build.prop error message, reverted build.prop back to stock, error went away but error 7 was still there.
I'm on Boeffla Kernel + Super SU + Xposed, could any of those have anything to do with it?

How did you judge about battery drain problem so fast! The update is by no means small. I looked at all the files in the patch and they have almost touched all aspects of the ROM. Like many have posted, if the device did not come with VoLTE, there is a very slim chance we will get it. More than a technical problem, it is a lengthy process.

I personally could care less about the VoLTE. Just pointing it out. But how hard would it have been to fix the picture compression problem? That's just lazy. Especially since it's been reported for MONTHS on the OP forums. And how about adding the music and gallery apps? And at only 29MB, they sure didn't touch much...

The update is by no means small.

Some fixes and not fixes that I 've noticed so far on 3.1.0, comparing it to 3.0.2 ...
Fixed
* Do not Disturb can now be scheduled via a 3rd app (eg Tasker)
* NET location is now available on Tasker doesn't work, it was probably cached
* GPS icon now appears on the status bar when using Sygic, it did not on 3.0.2 yet gps was available.
Not Fixed
* Recents does not always show the last running app, sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't
To be seen ...
* GPS drops after 20 minutes or so when using Sygic, it is consistent, I 'll find out about that tomorrow.
Clean flashed 3.0.2, flashed 3.1.0 update and factory reseted immediately.
No SuperSu/Xposed/Mods for now until I get a better picture of stock behavior.

Not only sygic I face the same problem on any GPS app (maps as example).
And not really after 20 minutesn but sometime 10 minutes and some other time 50 minutes. I have to disable and enable back GPS to fix it for few more minutes.

This is exactly the problem that I have, I got to close GPS and reopen it (or Sygic), in order to get it working again.
I haven't use GPS for over 50 mins, not at least since the release OOS 3.0.2. And yes, a couple of times GPS dropped in about 10 mins.
I 've seen it also occuring on Google Maps but I thought I shouldn't mention it because I rarely use it and don't have a solid opinion.
What I can say is it doesn't occur on OOS 2.2.1, no matter what.
Let's hope that the GPS icon that now appears on the statusbar is more than a UI fix and has some substance. More on that tomorrow when I' ll use GPS to and from work.
I 've also oppened an issue with Sygic about 3 weeks ago but I have no reply yet ...

Same problem here! (TWRP 3) First got a build.prop error message, reverted build.prop back to stock, error went away but error 7 was still there.
I'm on Boeffla Kernel + Super SU + Xposed, could any of those have anything to do with it?

Same problem here, any ideas yet?

Custom ROM anyone? Or even Kernel? Please share any mods/mod trials...

I've been waiting for a custom ROM, haven't quite learned to make one myself. I've tried finding a compatible Xposed with no luck. The only things I have been able to do are debloat and add Viper/Dolby sound mods that added volume boosts. Please feel free to add any trials and errors you guys have had trying to mod this phone here.

There are plenty of tutorials for making your own rom and kerenel. There are plenty in xda university and an excellent one by my colleague jackeagle, if you want something device specific then it maybe better to add the phone title in your op rather than just adding a tag

LG Aristo
No ROMs, no real mods and the only progress we have towards a kernel is KyleBryant's work delivering us the kernel source itself.

Dang Any tips for editing the power button on the back of the phone

What do you mean by editing the power button? Like how it functions or it's response upon being held down?
Substratum
Hey, just so you guys know, Substratum works once you're rooted. Just go to the Play Store and download the Substratum app along with a theme of your liking. I'll post some screenshots of my Aristo all theme translucent.

I'd recommend against using it with certain themes.
I ended up breaking my status bar so now when I hit the settings button from the pull down, it activated gps instead.
MODS
Changed BootAnimation .zip to Cyanogenmod version
Added Viper4Divine FX + DivineEQ + Dolby Atmos
Apps Added into system:
AdAway
Camera FV-5
ES File Explorer
EvolveSMS
FlySo
GhostKik
Instagram
Kik
NovaLauncher
PowerManager
Pulsar+
Removed from system:
All LG Home Apps (FIRST replace with Launcher of your choice E.G. Nova or ADW)
Lookout
All Google but Play Store, Play Services, Play Games, Gmail, YouTube, Maps, and Drive.
All LG apps but SmartWorld (yes including Messaging)
And removed more but they were minor and cant remember...
DivineEQ is blank when loaded so far.
ES File Explorer clears its "history" every time i exit the app. But major settings stick.
I know its nothing major. If I knew Android Developing, I would create a custom rom.

Good look, but the is for the lv3. I've already tried and it won't work due to twrp doing a check on model version and build version sadly.

As I said on the OP of that thread, check the specifications at the end.
Of course, it is for the MetroPCS version, I make it clear where it says:
Carrier: MetroPCS
And I also mention the twrp limitations and the fix.
Besides that, I am going to start building an slim version (very slim) and at the same time if anyone can provide me a T-mobile/Other Carrier Nandroid I can build slim versions of that for you guys.

That's when you boot into recovery and flash the Substratum.rescue zip and all good, plus, you should have a good nandroid to restore also. So nobody should be afraid to use Substratum, it's perfectly safe if you know your back up plans. Anyone has questions, just reply in this thread and I'll do my best to help anyone.

Yeah, I already had that panned out. My comment was a simple heads up about one of the possibilities.
snafu
starting over from scratch currently. everything was correct and working when i first rooted and progressively i messed up. i have no idea how it got so bad or why Ive put up with it for weeks now. i have several nandroid back-ups if anyone wants a headache. but i think my problem is deeper than just the ROM.
Laptop recognizes my LGMS210 as a LGMS550 when in recovery. Code 10 -broken drivers.... *re-flashed the recovery from fastboot [ADB version 1.0.32 Revision eac51f2bb6a8-android] and laptop gave me access to internal and SD but only seeing 9.95g available (6g for sys? is that right)
Google play is broke af. Nothing will install (error -504) even after cleaning data/data. data/apps .. even after dalvik/cache wipe.... even after praying. Not even apps Ive never installed before. LG smart world ie themes, fonts, whatever gives install error.
cant even install apks i have on SD (error-package seems corrupt)
Magisk wont update from ver 2.*.* to ver 16. begins to work but alas error -1 ?
I still have root tho lol
no super su present
and i have xposed framework API 26 installed but i think when using magisk and xposed modules this whole cluster nut began.
android Easter egg wont even work. its stuck with a fish selected, cant change the food offering. and NO cat has ever came.
Boot-loops 3-4 times if not shutdown properly... ie rebooter app or terminal reboot. i changed the default MPCS boot animation so i can see if its looping or chooching. gets thermo-nuclear hot and eventually boots after 4-5 minutes.
i'm gonna go ahead and re-flash stock FW.
*on a side note i keep confusing my PC software like fastboot and adb for my gf's galaxy tab A. Caught a security error brick when i accidentally used its fastboot for something like to unlock bootloader.... i have way too many devices being worked on at once. eh, never a dull moment.

You're using the wrong recovery if it's still showing the ms550.
Drivers are universal inside of company devices. (LG for LG, Samsung for Samsung) so they don't conflict.
Adb and fastboot are both universal drivers and shouldn't matter for your device. (I'm using the same fastboot I installed for my Galaxy note 4 that I am for my aristo, my V10, my htc desire 610, and my uncle's v20)
Just do what you said and start fresh.
Unlock the bootloader.
Install the proper twrp and remove encryption.
Flash the stock boot partition and wipe data (this is sneakily pertinent if you're gonna use magisk)
Do not install system mods before using magisk.
After that, use twrp's file explorer to remove and stock apps that you won't need.
