How many people really have note 3's? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 3

I have noticed something lately, it seems like not that many people are on the note 3 forums for sprint. Is it because it's sprint, the price of the phone or because people just don't want to mess with the phone? What do you guys think?
The themes/apps section the most views are on my thread (spen sound pack) and it has been downloaded over 2000 times from kevinrocksman.com and goo.im put together

Personally I know quite a few people who are just still locked down for one more year in contract..also I see a ton of people with the S4 who love the N3 but didn't want to wait.

Well, I use mostly stock, rooted rom because, well, unlike some previous devices, it's quite "good enough" that other than removing a bit of crap, I'm happy with the rest of it.
I didn't use your sound pack, as cool as it seems because I turn off spen sounds.
And honestly, I've not had many issues to speak of, so since I don't have much to say, I don't post much.
It really is the best device I've ever had in stock form.

I spend most of my time on the general Note 3 forums:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-3
I just pop my head in here occasionally to look for Sprint specific updates.

I've thought the same thing before. The phone is a niche style phone on the third largest carrier. I'm glad the community we do have is like family and constantly helping each other out.
Maybe after the holidays and tax season everyone will be making the switch. The phone is awesome and all.

I've got a Note 2 and I pop in here and just watch the arguing about if the Note 3 has tri band or not lol. Then I check if AOSP has been released. Still thinking if I should get the Note 3 or not. I wonder if Sprint will release a tri-band version like they did with the S4.

I waited til price drop. Bestbuy has them $149 if you add a line so yeaterday i went down grabbed a note 3 and swapped it to my current line. Called sprint canceled the new line and will sell my lg g2 to pay the etf

The Kernel I use is from those forums:
[kernel][tw] leanKernel: minimalistic kernel
and these mods can be found over in the generic Note 3 forums as well:
[APP] [v2] PEN Window Manager - Easily Enable Apps for PEN Window
[APP] MultiWindow PLUS - Enable HIDDEN Multiwindow Features - MUST HAVE excellent mod
[APP] MULTIWINDOW Apps Manager - Easily Add More Apps to the Multiwindow Tray
Quite a lot seems to be cross-compatible, but even many of the things that aren't, the devs over there have made an effort to support as many of us as possible. So definitely show some support to those guys as well as the great devs that we have in this forum.

I think in another 40 days or so when i have an upgrade ill get it a sams club or somewhere its a bit cheaper the lack of hotspot hack on this g2 has me itching

I don't like the samsung ui overlay and LOVE stock 4.4 KitKat. I've been using a Moto X for a couple of days and I'm loving it!! If only the note 3 was a 1 device for all carriers like the nexus 5 so the same ROM would work for all carriers. I'm seriously thinking if selling my note 3 to buy a nexus 5 but the camera, screen and lack of sdcard slot really turn me down..
Please pardon my ignorance but Why isnt there a cm/aosp ROM for the note 3? Is it because Samsung has not provided the kernel source?

I only come here when I had a phone that needed to be modded. I dont dabble much so I appreciate all that people do here..
I have a note 3 and just plane love it.. unroooted and all... no issues.. just plane cool!!! still getting used to it... but eventually I will root it..
people say they want to remove the bloatware... I went in and clicked disable on the stuff I didnt want and I know it is still there.. but with the amount of ram I have in it.. I dont care..
so we have what.. 32gb of space.. and i added a 64gb micro sd class 10.. added it right in the store.. got someone to change their mind from an iphone cuz they didnt want to pay more $$$ for 64gb unit... hah...
anyway.. I got so much space free I havent seen a need to remove any apps...
also this is my first "Note" and I will ALWAYS own a note now...
i went from
Sprint Titan with custom rom> Galaxy S2 > Note 3 - so I dont have much experience on the android platform but I love this thing!!!!

I have flashed every android phone I had in the past, mainly because they needed it in order to function and perform properly. The note 3 is a beast out of box, therefore unless there's a super stable and awesome rom that catches my attention, I won't flash. I think more people went with the S4 imo as well.

S Pen and custom ROM

Sorry for the lame post, ie can you guys answer my personal question, but i am seriously considering getting the Note 2 when it comes out here in Canada. Thought i would ask you original Note users about custom ROM usability as it is a concern to me.
I am a galaxy nexus user and was hoping to get the next nexus, but since it is being made by LG i have my reservations. I also find myself considering a tablet, but then have to ask myself what i would do on a tablet that i don't already do on my phone, except of course on a larger scale. Which brings me into Phablet territory.
Coming from the nexus, and being the type of Android user who likes the vanilla OS, my concerns revolve around customization. Given that the S Pen functionality is so deeply implemented into the OS does this result in a lesser experience if a custom ROM is flashed? Say you choose to flash one of the new CM10 nightlies. Is it CM10 just like it is on all other phones/tablets, or does it retain the "stuff" that makes the Note what it is....unique?
Any feedback is appreciated, flaming not so much

I just got my note 2 weeks ago. I came from the incredible 2. I had cm 7, 9, and 10 on it. One of the first roms i flashed on my gnote was cm. To me i didn't notice alot of difference. I didn't keep it on long because i wanted the use of the pen. I did find a nice Rom with good features in a stock Rom (black star). Samsung is supposed to release jb for the gnote.so once that happens there will be more options. After that gnote 3 will be out and key lime pie
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
I was really wondering the same thing, I'm considering the note 2 but will hold off if the s pen functions can't be applied to custom roms. From reading around the forums it looks like the functions probably won't be able to be transferred to aosp roms. I think they're making progress on the note 1, but not all aosp roms have functionality and they still don't have full functionality. It looks like touchwiz roms are fine though, but then again I'm not a note user.
I suppose it would be a lot of extra work for the developer(s) who work on the ROM to integrate such functionality into a ROM for just one device. I'll have to wait and see it when it comes out. Since the Note 2 well be running JB out of the box, a simple root and removal of bloatwear might be all that is needed. I've def become a fan of Samsungs products since the nexus s though. I also have to admit that the look and overall specs of the LG Nexus 4 are pretty underwhelming. I might have to do something crazy, like wait for something else to come along :-S HTCs new 5" phone with 1080p screen might be the sweet spot for me as long as it has good development support. Can't beat HTCs build quality. My hopes for the Note 2 remain high though as i haven't read a negative review yet.

Yeah same here, for me its between the note 2 and the htc 1080p phone. There are some aosp roms with s pen support on the note 1 and it looks like the note 2 will become very popular so there's a good chance cm10 and other roms may have s pen support. The only thing that's keeping me from the note 2 is that samsung isn't releasing as much driver and chip info so developers may not want to or be able to do as much. In the video here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTRKL5E9Iak and in a few other threads, its said that cyanogenmod won't officially support the note 2 because of that.
I think the problem is that Samsung has not released the source to the pen but i am not 100% sure.

Makes me sad. Although, what really makes me sad is that i have to carefully weigh the decision of which phone to purchase based on how well it will be supported by private developer community. Weird isn't it? I buy a phone, and change it as soon as i take it out of the box. LG Nexus is sounding better now.

Hi, I just flash with Omega V9.1 custom rom + RedHill V1.0 kernel + Philz CWM 3.81 recovery on my Note 2 N7100.
Run smoothly with S Pen (auto pop up), multi-windows, swap ext2SD function.. SUPER SMOOTH...:good:
I'm using my spen without any problems on CM10. Gnote and memo beta work better than the Samsung spen app. The only thing missing are the spen genstures and shortcut for screen capture which I never used and there are dozens of screenshot apps.
Why do people act like the spen does not work outside stock?

The SPen works fine on custom roms, it's the button features that are missing from (moat) 207 custom roms. Personally I prefer the original functionality that the SPen exhibits in touch wiz, so I'm running a stock(ish) rom.

My upgrade date isn't until January 25th. I'm really hoping some headway is made on this before then. I'm sure a lot of people, myself included would be very inclined to make a nice donation to anybody willing to work on this! The AT&T group seems to have made a TON of progress on this, so maybe some collaboration could be done with them to port a "final" build over once they iron out the kinks?
I ported miui to the sprint galaxy note 2 CDMA and if you guys want to use that as a base to port over I don't mind ..so far everything is working on the build ..you can look at the sprint thread and its miui on stock base with working multi Window n s pen features

That's awesome. Since I've moved over to Samsung I've been enjoying jb touch wiz and haven't really missed miui. It had that appeal to me because it looked and somewhat performed like ios but now I think tw is far more superior in performance and cosmetics than ios/miui. I'm really liking the one handed operation that tw offers. I'm not sure that miui offers that.

If you flash the MIUI Home zip will you then have the option of choosing between it and your stock home? Or does something else have to be flashed for that to happen?

Alternate Kernel Choice AOSP/SAMMY w/ stweaks style sound app

I don't know if anyone is using this kernel yet but I have been using it for two days now and loving it. It was made for the n7105 but has been running perfectly on my vzw gnote2. It also has an app you download from the market "like" stweaks that lets you adjust cpu/gpu settings as well as sound including turning up in call mic volume. Just scroll down to the downloads section and download the n7105 versions for either tw(sammy) or aosp, I have tested both.
Only, issue so far is that the eq in the app (uneak) isn't working but I use noozxoide for that. Apparently the eq isn't working on the n7105 either so don't fill up his thread with compliants. Believe me, you will be impressed with the sound improvements using the kernel (neak) the app (uneak) and noozxoide from google play.
Find the original thread here. Be sure to read the entire op, there is a lot of useful information there.
I in no way take any credit for this, just wanted to share.
Just to be clear, you're flashing a non-Verizon kernel onto your Verizon Galaxy Note 2 and you aren't running into any issues? Is that correct?
I exclude that equalizer issue as you said it isn't working on the other phones either.

Correct, been running it for two days with no problems, no lock ups no sods no nothing. Running fast and smooth. Better sound than stweaks and perseus imo.
Well, that's awesome. Kind of curious whats up with that. In the past kernels for the international variants required "porting" to the Verizon/AT&T etc phones. Wonder why not with this one?
If it were possible to flash kernels from all the other variants on our Verizon Note 2's that would open a lot of doors for options.

WOW. Just came across this kernel randomly by searching google for "verizon note 2 aosp kernel" and HOLY ****E! This is the best kernel I have ever run on my phone by far!! This thread needs to come back to life and people need to get on this. I'm running this with carbon currently and am getting the best battery life I ever have using the muti-core mod app made by the dev along with the uneak engine control app. Don't be skurred...even though they don't SAY Verizon, these kernels run fine with Verizon, as long as you follow the links in the OP under N7105/T889/I317 LTE RELEASES:. These kernels were just updated on June 7, so they are FRESHHHH.
Seriously, give this a try. And make sure to use the apps linked to in the uNeak dev's OP.

There have been quite a few reports of people flashing N7105, T-Mobile, and AT&T kernels on the i605 with no issues. You cannot flash Sprint kernels because sprint writes /data on /dev/block/mmcblk0p17 instead of on /dev/block/mmcblk0p16.
So using a Sprint kernel would most likely bootloop you, it may not but from what I've read it most likely will, and I'm unsure if the N7100 is fair game or not, I have been looking through kernels lately and have found one on the N7100 that I am going to try later and see if it works of if it causes issues like I think it will.
That leaves us 3 other Note 2's kernels to play with though aside from our own!

I'm the same way. Once I have an app installed and I play with it for a few minutes and will actually keep it, I have no issues with donating a few bucks to the Dev. After all, they did this on their own time and it keeps development going. I actually prefer apps that have a trial version rather than apps that force you to buy and then you only have 15 minutes to get a refund (Damn you Google Play Store Refund Policy). My poor bank statement is littered with App Store purchases of different Dev Apps. Spouse just looks at the statement and usually asks....what the hell is this and what is it for? I just lift my phone up and that's the end of the conversation.

Yet Scott just released a zip that will allow us to flash t mobile, and att roms. Give me a moment, and I will find the thread, and post it here. If you want to see a dead phone, go look at the rezound. The phone is barely a year and a half old, and it is marching into obscurity. The droid incredible has more action. These threads aren't going to produce more roms, just bad attitudes. Try playing with all of the mods we have, and theme it to whatever you want it to be. Morphology, Xposed, and a slew of others. Troll the other carriers threads, and pull mods that you want. That is all we can ask for, unless you are paying the devs a paycheck.

Which have you tried? Both Jedi and Jelly Beans are both great. I am using the mod in my sig right now as I like that it keeps the samsung allshare features working.
With a combination of Jelly Beans, Widget Locker, and a theme you could pretty much get anything done you want. Pick up the odd app or mod here and there to fill in the gaps.
By the way, if you want to give 4.1.2 a go Jedi is running that. It is great if you don't need the Samsung services.
Here is a thread with all the info for running other carriers. This should keep you busy for awhile. Though, I hear sprint roms are a disaster.

I think this has been my main take away from discussions, and browsing the other forums. Quantity in this case definitely does not equal quality. I don't see the point in having 10 options if only 2 or 3 are viable. However, that is just my opinion.
Most source built ROMs (AOSP) are going to have issues, whether major or minor, and are much easier to customize as you're dealing with XML and java. However, the lack of TW features keep people away from them.
With TouchWiz ROMs, you don't lose any functionality, but there is only so much that smali hacking can do. Most of this is just the time consuming nature of trying to hack a ROM via smali only. You could get everything in your favorite source built ROM if you wanted to take the time to do so. But, given that this is a for-fun thing and not a money making venture, developers aren't likely to take that amount of time if they wouldn't use it themselves.

I would definitely prefer a few quality roms with great support than 27 versions of cyanogenmod that are 98% the same. Beans, MeanBean, Tweaked, Jedi, Elemental...that should be plenty to keep the crack flashers happy.

Here is a thread with all the info for running other carriers. This should keep you busy for awhile. Though, I hear sprint roms are a disaster.

Is there a way to run Sprint, and T-Mobile roms on Verizon?

What is a rom really? To me It's just a better version of what the manufacturer builds. The stuff is basically the same for the most part with the addition of tweaks for better battery performance etc... That are added by the dev. The thing that makes a rom different are the things like themes and different looking batteries etc..., so why have 100 roms that essentially are the same? I would prefer to have 1 rom that performs well with a bunch of themes and mods hence i only use meanbean and love the real icon theme, or morphology. Mean bean is a great rom and with pbj kernel even better.

To each their own ya know. My reason personally for rooting and unlocking is personalization, which is why I tend to end up at aosp more often than not. There's plenty of options and stuff to mix around. The only reason why I made a topic about it was because of the extensive development on other carriers. Not because I'm not pleased with what's here, I just have a hard time staying on one ROM for long

This answer makes me glad I didn't flame you last night when I was drunk haha. Meanbean plus morphology is plenty of customization for me haha

stock android firmware has evolved into something so much better than it use to be...im still on beans build 2 because it flatout works and has all the things I need. Its hard to develop when stock touchwiz is so good out of the box. the only real thing that touchwiz needs is themeing. beans takes the cake on that. aosp was nice on my gs1 because it trimmed the fat and made the ol single core with limited ram run smooth. these quad core beasts are designed to handle bloat and a festure rich skins(touchwiz), so aosp does not have the appeal and performance advantage it use to. however for the folks that
keep this device well past tthe point verizon quits supporting it, then aosp will shine...simply for the fact it will bring the latest android offerings and keep the note 2 alive.
I think it had A LOT to do with TW and Spen/Note 2 specific features. Nobody really wants to lose them, and there's only so many ways to mess with TW. There's plenty of AOSP/KP stuff but look at the involvement compared to TW roms... It's there, but not as much... My take on it anyway.
Edit: Yeah, what Droidstyle said, lol.
Sent from my VZW Galaxy Note ll. I like my Beans Mean....v1.08 =D
Don't forget that Samsung has promised an update to 4.2 for the Note II sometime this year. No real timetable, but when it comes it will be a shot in the arm for development.
Myself, I bounce between Beans ROM and CyanogenMod. The S-Pen features are what generally keep me hopping, but both are good.

wow totally shocked

So my g2 came in tonight from amazon att on contract for 29 bucks. I assumed I was going to have to root and rom it based on some reviews. My last phone was a nexus 4 with kit kat on it. I always run stock or close to stock android. But I have to tell you, once I put nova launcher and played with my settings..... I don't really see the benifit for me to change it. I didn't expect the phone to be nearly as nice as it is. I thought it would be a sideways move from my n4. But everything about the phone suprisingly great for me so far.
I do wish I could select other apps for the multi tasking window, but whatever.
I'll probably root eventually to get the at and t bloat off. But for now I feel like I got a lot more phone then I bargened for.

Nice to know, I currently have a N4 and I have been considering this phone. Based on the reviews I wondered if I should wait and see what other phones come out over the next 6 months but your post gives me optimism.
Phone is pretty sweet.
I like the toggles on the device. Battery life is soo good compared to the nexus 5/xperia z1 that i previously owned.
Ive been stuck trying to figure out how to get twrp installed. Even though i read the instructions haha they dont work for me sadly, i suck.
this phone is a beast.
I love this phone and everything that comes with it. I unlocked my bootloader, rooted it, put in a custom recovery and flashed a custom ROM . Then I realized it was better stock. All the custom ROM did was remove the cool stuff and made it look like all my other devices. They weren't nearly so cool when stock so they can stay custom but this baby I put back to stock. Mind you, I left it rooted and with a custom recovery so I can still tweak things but I don't lose all the goodness that this phone is.

I'm glad you like it. and it sounds like you want the same stuff I wanted out of this phone. Look around the forums and find things. For example I am running cleanrom just to get the crap off of it and its still like LG Stock except the crap and i am using Nova to look "Vanilla". Also I used Xposed Framework to change a few things around the way I like it. There is also a thread on here to use split view. its a port from the LG G Flex and works excellent. This is the link to set up Split view. Check out my screen shot to see some of the Xposed mods you can get to make it yours.
This dev forum got a lot more attention than I expected and its paying off bit time also just makes this phone that much more awesome.
I uploaded some pics of the Split-view along with some Qslide apps open too.
One last thing, This thread makes the Camera WAYYY Better.
Definitely impressed by the g2 even 2 months later. ...

For people with custom roms, did you loose the stock features of the camera? For instance, did you loose the different camera modes like burst shot? I really like that feature to take pics of my dogs.

I've been thinking about going back to stock as well because of all the features I miss. Mostly the text messages popping out

Since there are all these mods and debloating possibilities available there really is no need to use a custom ROM - not only on the G2, but on many other devices as well. It's just a bit more work; but hey, isn't that part of the modding / flashing fun?

I agree and it keeps the devices unique. I find that the phones become more generic. All the stuff is the same. You just might be able to change the color on one before the other catches up. Even from one device to the next, all the custom ROMs end up looking the same.
To be fair though, in a some cases
it is a definite benefit. I would never be running kitkat on my Note without a custom ROM. The battery improvements can be huge as well.
So I guess it's the device, benefits and good ole personal preferences. Regardless, isn't it wonderful to have the choice? And the hard work these people do to create these ROMs, for free, is amazing. Either way we're lucky.

Mines still stock rom. I did root, flash a few mods, and Xposed. Has all the features I want from a custom rom but several LG specific perks like Popup Calls, SplitView, Floating apps, etc.

Kit Kat vs jelly bean is a totally different animal. When I swapped over its immediately noticeable how much snappier the whole thing is
You'll get bored eventually and will try aosp/cm rom. But with G2 there's always option to use both end whenever you want to

mine is in the mail.... thanks for the different views on stock and modding....
So day 2 or 3 now. Took it to work today and battery lasted easily twice as long with very heavy use then my n4. I even ingressed and didn't need to charge it.
I'll hvae to look into the split screen mod, that would be pretty useful.
The ONLY irritating thing that I've not been able to simply fix is the volume for google now is the same volume adjustment for the keyboard. I like a nice quiet but audible keyboard and a loud voice with google now, I'm sure I'll figure out a way, but its not readily obviouious how.
I thought I'd end up rooting it the first day because I had the latest and gratest kit kat on the n4, but I've got no desire to do it. I'm sure I'll get board and do something different eventually. Just cant leave well enough alone.
I just picked up my n4 to copy the ringtones over to the g2, and what did I do? tried to turn it on looking for a button on the back. Already trained!
Seriously I think this is the sleeper phone of the year. I snickerd at my friends n5 today. I told him it was cute and it was a poser's development phone. I was only half way joking.
