[Q] Root Samsung Galaxy S2 Questions - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm noob at rooting my devices so i have a few questions to ask.
I've read quite a few topics and watched some videos about rooting Samsung Galaxy s2, however they didn't make it less confusing but now i'm just scarred.
Somehow i ended up reading this topic: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1693704
Downloaded the App and it said that i have
eMMC chip
type: VYL00M
CID: *long number*
Revision: 0x19
Verdict
DANGER! This eMMC chip is *KNOWN* to have the brick bug!
Does this mean i shouldn't try to root my device... ever?
Looking forward to any response, thank you.

You really need to learn the basics. Read the guides/stickies in the General section before you do anything to your phone or there's a fair chance you'll break it.
If you'd done even a modest amount of research, you'd know the brickbug only affects phones running rooted Android 4.0.4 stock. So, regardless of what a chip check tells you, if you're running anything else, forget the brickbug.
Re: rooting the phone, if it scares you, leave your phone stock & enjoy it.

Thank you so much for the answer. Yes my galaxy s2 is running 4.1.2.
I'm not that scarred now and i might as well buy a new phone if i mess up.
But i'm wondering still, even if i root my phone without problems, can i install cyanogenmod 11 for the 4.4 kitkat without getting an
y issues?
So i can forget the brickbug as i'm 4.1.2 official update? Once again thank you for answering.

Would be enough to flash a kernel as the recovery from Philz Oficial. Or use the good old Odin

What I did with my sis phone.
Download Odin
Download a Odin flashable kernel that supports 4.1.2
Flash
Download superuser package
Install it in recovery
Sent from my Xperia Arc S using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

Yes.

Thanks everyone for the replies. Happy with any suggestions given.
I guess i will probably try to root my phone with SiyahKernel S2-v6.0beta5 kernel via Odin3 and see how it goes from there.

Hey guys. This SGSII cost me all my savings i've been making, and such I can't risk it to go to Samsung Service Center cause bad explanatons given.
So i ask you, how to 100% apply Root and CWM?
Here's my Model:
baseband: I9100BULP8
compilation nº: IMM76D.BULPG
It's a Portuguese stock SGSII with ICS 4.0.4.
Thanks, and please understand why i'm so worried about bricking it :/

since you are on 4.0.4 your phone probably have the brick bug. The easiest and safest way to root is to flash siyah kernel 5.01 or earlier version via ODIN. I believe you know how to use Odin.

Nope, I don't. I come from Galaxy Ace. Never used Odin on it..and rooting was simple as aplying a .zip from recovery

Well, if you want to be entirely save, just stay on the stock rom.
However, if you're willing to take the risk, because it's never 100% safe, check if you're having an insane chip and eventually root your device with Odin. Several guides and explanations here on xda (and Google also).

Install 'eMMC Brickbug Check' from the Play Store, and look for threads about the Brickbug. It's important you do this before rooting, because you're on 4.0.4.

Check the link below for the 'eMMC brick bug check' app from stores, install the same and see if u have got a Sane or Insane chip on ur phone
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.vinagre.android.emmc_check&hl=en
even if its a Insane chip, there is no need to worry as long as u wont do anything silly (like Wiping Data on the stock kernel recovery of android v4.0.4).
Just flash Siyah kernel v4.1.5 or v5.0.1 (tar file for ODIN) on ur phone, as custom kernel's like Siyah and Dorimanx are BrickBug free kernels and will not effect ur phone when u perform 'Wipe Data/Factory Reset' from there Recovery
U can google for some Youtube Guides on 'How to flash Custom Kernel on galaxy S2 using Odin'
Good Luck!

How that program works? Is it 100% secure?
I runed that app and nothing happens. Just says:
eMMC Chip:
Type: V3U00M
Data 10/2012
CID: many numbers
FW: 0x0e
Brick Bug?
NO: Sane chip.

Lol,The app has done its wrk already ma8
u have a sane chip on ur phone, that means ur phone is not affected by the 'eMMC BrickBug'.
Still to be on the safer side u can install a custom Kernel of ur Choice Like Siyah v4.1.5 or v5.0.1 for example.
As the Cwm recovery that comes with it will aid in installing Custom Rom/Kernel of ur choice

Take my Advice and Stay on Stock Rom for now and dont toss all ur Savings investd on ur phone into thin air
try things listed below to see the diff on batt life
1)If not in use Turn off ur Data/wifi.
2)Turn Off all autosync on ur phone (E-mail, gmail, Location etc)
3) Use more of WIFI (when its availble) over DATA as much as possible.
4)if ur using Facebook/Skype/Googlechrome etc then SEEK alternative apps like Freindcaster/Stock Browser as they r more friendly on ur batt compared to the former one's.
5) turn off ur Data when ur on a low netwrk signal area.
this way u can get more Juice out of ur battery for sure

No offense, but I think you should try your phone for a few weeks first. Then you can start thinking about rooting, but first learn more about how to use it.
If you want to root it, read a lot first, because now you're asking things that are discussed a million times already.

If you are not sure you better wait for the official JB update from samsung which will be released next month hopefully..Normally stock ICS roms have good battery life. When i was using stock ICS i was able to get through a day without much problem. With siyah kernel you can underclock and undervolt cpu to save battery.
If you dont know how to use Odin search google and youtube. There are so many videos regarding the matter. Just follow the instructions.

If you learn how to use odin correctly brickbug is not a problem. Anyway stay on stock until you learn things. Screen normally uses most of the battery. It is normal enjoy your phone. Official JB will be released next month. At least thats what samsung says. Please be patient and hit the thanks button

Hited my friend, and thanks for the patient. All of you thanks too!
Can you provide me a link for that of samsung? I tried to find but I only see "in Ocotber-November" they will release:s
Root it without using odin. Then you can play with titanium to freeze and stcpu to governate.
You already got a bunch of carrier bloatware in your device. Same happened to me.
I started reading this forum, double checkin' all the time on "what is the safest method for me?", and came across a cmw & busybox zip files, rooted. Then I discovered Mobile Odin and, as I had enough with ICS, went up to JB leak with it.
It was so cool to flash my device in half-a-smoke time, no carrier boot animation, no carrier bloat whatsoever, I'm looking at 1-2 days battery, smoothness with butter project, and a really good loking device compared with my friends GB & ICS (they go like "what tha....".
But the guys are right too, you really gotta start enjoying your device, It truly is...an amazong phone.

[Q] Samsung S2 Rooting Help

Hi guys,
I have always wanted to root my S2 but I have no idea which information about my phone to look up for. The attached is my phone information.
Which info should I look for to find the software? Baseband or Kernel or Build number? And how do I know am I using ICS or GINGERBREAD? What should I look out for or any important things that I have to take note?
Apologize for the noob question.
Thanks in advance for the help.

Hum..let's say that while you are in 4.0.4 you are in danger (If you wanna modify your device, software related).
If you wanna play it safe, you got 2 options:
1) downgrade from 4.0.4 to 4.0.3
2) flash a safe kernel (like siyah).
Just start digging about all these, read some threads, some guides, watch some youtube videos of flashing and rooting.
After that, if you still want to root/flash your device, you'll find many guides & tutorials in the general forum. Just like this.
Modifying your device is not hard, you just have to know what you are doing and learn the what-not-to-do tips.

Gingerbread is just the previous version on ICS. Some consider it better, other consider it old. You just have to remain far from brick bug. Download gotbrickbug app from play store if you want a good old scare
Don't worry about the builds, just make sure that you flash an I9100 ROM.
Still, you're up for some reading first.

[Q] The most easiest way to root S2 4.1.2

By flashing a kernel like siyah v6 b5+ via odin.
Thanks for the answers!
Now first of all, ExynosAbuse would be perfect but does that support 4.1.2?
Also what comes to sidyah, does that support phones that are sim-locked? If so, how can i get rid of the operator sim-lock and is this risky?
And for the last: if i root my phone, can i get official updates in the future from samsung? Cause i don't wanna mess with the style that i got in my jelly bean quite like it, just want to get superuser-access.
So the app that i'm searching for is one click root that supports updates in future for 4.1.2. Is it impossible?
Thanks!
I'm with theunderling here.
I've always flashed via Odin woithout any problems and it very quick too. If you do everything right, it shouldn't take more than a minute, dead serious. 1 minute. Okay maybe more, but maximum 2 according to me
Just download tar or md5 file. Open Odin. Put the file in PDA. Then start. (and make sure Re-Partition is NOT checked)
(Im not going to give you step by step instructions cause that is for you to find out But i've actually helped you out alot
Good luck, and post for further question. Just dont forget to search before.
*EDIT* Yea, siyah is one of the best kernels, and dont worry everythin should be the same. You can get siyah kernel from gokhanmoral.com

Hi guys! I'm a noob, and I have some questions

Hi guys!
First of all, I'm sorry if my english sounds wierd, not my main language.
I'm not here to ask witch rom or kernel are the best, just some help.
Recently I got an S2 - GT-I9100 with stock 4.1.2 room. I'm loving this phone, and I kinda like the samsung's rom even tough it consumes a lot of battery. I'm kinda curious about CyanogenMod and using moded kernels, but, I'm kinda afraid of messing up everything and brick my phone. Checked if I had the eemc firmware insane chip and I got it, so it makes me even more insecure of trying out new stuff.
Now for the questions:
I have this phone locked to a carrier, can I still flash it?
Can I flash it even if I have the eemc bug without any problems?
Can you guys recomend a really good newbie guide with each and every step to flash and install a new kernel? (I've looked around this website and the internet, but, those that I find kinda' dont explain everything in an easy way)
I've instaled clockworkmod on my phone, but it says it dosent suport it. why not?
Can I have a custom kernel with sammy's stock room?
thanks in advance.
1) Yes, you can flash custom firmware if your phone is carrier locked
2) Yes, you can flash your phone despite having a chip susceptible to the EMMC bug, which only affects phones running rooted stock 4.0.4 firmware
3) Do not attempt to flash anything to your phone until those guides make sense. Right now they look like they 'don't explain things in an easy way' because you obviously don't know a lot about Android, and in particular this phone. If you take the time to read/learn, the guides very quickly will become easy to understand & you'll know what you're doing. Flashing without knowing what you're doing leads to busted phones & dented wallets.
4) Without knowing exactly what you flashed, I have no idea. If you want to root your phone, there is a thread stickied near the top of Q&A that has all the info you need. It honestly doesn't get any simpler than that thread. If you don't find it easy to understand, as I said above, don't do anything to your phone until you do.
5) Yes, you can run a custom kernel with a stock rom

If you flash Philz kernal for your software build its a safe kernal from the brick bug. If you download the zip file it will not only put the safe kernal on but also root it. Link below

If you're running rooted 4.0.4 stock & you do a factory reset, there's a fair chance you'll brick your phone. For the technical version, Google/XDA search is your friend.

Hi once more!
Can I ask you for some more help? I read the post about philz kernel, understood what I have to do and I want to thank you about trying to help me. I'm sorry to bother you once more, since I prefer to be certain.
Got the GT-I9100
I got stock 4.1.2
Baseband is I9100BULS1
Kernel version is 3.0.31-88955 [email protected] #3 SMP PREEMPT KST 2013
Compilation Number is JZO54K.I9100XWLSD
So I guess the one that I need to download and install is:
<< 17.04.2013 - PhilZ-cwm6 v4.93.6 with CWM 6.0.3.1 based recovery >>
XWLSD (bootloop fixed)
http://www.mediafire.com/file/4cb3mf...3.6-signed.zip
http://www.mediafire.com/file/q642zb...4.93.6.tar.md5
Also I got SuperSU already installed, this means I have to unistall it and do this or can I install this kernel anyway?

No worries, Im happy to help.
If you already have superuser just download the "tar" file and flash it with odin as thats just the kernal.
Your build is LSD, download that one. which is philz 5.06.1
Your LSD build is quite old, have a look on samfilmware for your region as im sure you should get atleast LSW. Theres also LSZ and MS1 builds out.
Sorry here is the one you need

Sorry for being such a pain in the ass.
Well tbh, this phone is second hand, and the guy that sold it to me, had a custom rom on it but I asked him to flash it back to stock at the time. it came with stock 2.4 or something, but I updated it trough kies to 4.1.2. I looked around samfilmware and I only saw the build I have right now. I dont think I can update it
So I only need to get odin3, put the cellphone in dm, flash the new tar and thats it?

Hi once more, and thanks for everything! Well, I managed to lose my fear of trying it and managed to flash it using the instructions from philz tread. Everything went all right!
I live in portugal, and my carrier is vodafone, I think that the build I have is the most updated one.
Really, thanks for helping me with this!

Your next step is flashing a custom rom Have a look at the link below. Battery life is amazing on this rom.

If you're running rooted 4.0.4 stock & you do a factory reset, there's a fair chance you'll brick your phone. For the technical version, Google/XDA search is your friend.

But the EMMC bug doesn't affect any S II phones with JB roms does it?
Correct (4.0.4 being ICS). Even if you have a susceptible chip, the firmware has to have the bug which causes the chip to be scrambled/corrupted, which means anything before 4.0.4 or anything after (or anything custom for that matter) poses no problems.

I'm at work right now, so I can only do it after work. So I just need to, follow the instructions on the NEAT ROM post to flash it? They dont say how to backup your things tough but I searched in this forum and found how to do it-. So I only need to use the cwm to back it up. Does it back up EFS folder too?
You have been so far a really helpful dude, thanks mate! Was kinda afraid of posting something here, but turns out there is really nice people around here!
Btw if the mods want I can just PM you for some help instead of posting here.

[Q] .:New Method to root Andoid:.

Hello,
I am currently using the Samsung Galaxy SIII GT-I9300. Bought this device last April. At that time I was completely new to rooting device. I didn't know what to do. I searched online about rooting device, read many post by users in various blogs and threads here in XDA. Then I was very curious to root my device. But even then, though i knew what rooting was and its merits and demerits, i had no idea how to root my device. So I started searching again for an easy and fast way to root my device. Then I came me across the framaroot thread here and thanks to the developer of Framaroot, I was able to root my android safely without any problems. It was a very useful app for beginners who had no idea about rooting.
After few months, I received a firmware update. I had no idea what changes it would bring about in my device. In a hope to find out the new features, I updated the firmware. But sadly, there wasn't any noticeable change. So once again I seeked the help of framaroot to root my device. I was left with an error message and didn't know what to do. Again by searching on Google, I came to know about the OTA update about which I had no idea prior to the firmware update. I realized that the OTA update was a curse to Android rooting and I was left with my boring stock rom without anything. Today again I searched all over the Internet for a very safe and easy method to root my device but couldn't find anything like the framaroot. So here I am kindly requesting, the deveopers to kindly update the already existing methodsor make a new easy method to root android devices so that people new to android can experiment and enjoy root features. Sorry for the long story, thought it might be useful by explaining everything in detail. Hope I have not violated any of the XDA rules. If I did, I apologise for that too but please don't remove this thread. It would be very nice if anyone can find a solution as there are many people in the same situation as I am right now.
Thanking XDA and all the developers for there services.

Thanks for the post. Nevers seen this before. I will surely try it out. I have heard about odin before but was not confident to use it as I thought it may brick my device. Is there any root apps like Framaroot that can help make the process a lot faster and easier without the use of a computer.

1- Its the fastest and most reliable method I femilliar with- just follow the vid orders step by step (according to your device model), and no harm
should be made (unless you plug out your device in the middle of the process, or using a different model type- but even those can be resolved).
2- No apps that I know. Although i would not recommend it even if I found one- just seems too riksy than using the computer...
Basically all the OP questions are answered in the faqs and guides .
Root is constantly updated as and when possible but its not a simple question of just making a new one . Read the relevant root threads .

If it was only that easy on S3 would save a lot of trouble ..yep follow instructions in thread and use PhilZ .tar.md5 not the zip file and if you are flashing CM 11 you do not need to root the rom is already rooted.

Okieee bro
But... again....what is the difference between flashing in odin and recovery? So for any future process I can avoid all these doubts.
Searched online. Couldn't find anything that tells the difference.

Without giving you a long explanation you flash custom roms in recovery (.zip files) and stock roms (.tar) in odin and same for recoveries.

Ow ok ok...thats explains a bit
Thanks.
Something is tempting me to try it out. Lol. If it works, i will report it here and it will help other s3 users too. At the same time, something prevents me from doing it. I get a feeling of bricking my device. Then I will have to fix that too
Before I do something like that, can u predict if it may work since the same method worked for the N7000 or can u tell me if have you tried it before? (Please tell me if I am annoying u, it doesn't matter )
