[Q] Any messenger wants your phone number and steal your contacts? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

No idea if I'm in the right section.
I am using an Note 2 for a few month and now I was interested in installing a messenger. I knew before that I would never use whatsapp because it is copying your contacts list and that is something I don't like.
So I was looking around and it seems, virtually every messenger wants to have my phone number or access to my contacts list.
It is really annoying when someone ask me "do you have whatsapp / do you have line messenger" and I all I can reply is "no, I would be forced to give out my phone number and/or send all my contact to some faceless major corporation"
Now you would ask "why did you get an android phone in the first place?", well... because my 3 year old phone felt very slow (1 touch on an icon, wait 1-2 seconds until something happened) and very restricted with audio and video support.
The hardware on this new phone is just perfect, no complaints at all. I also never registered to google play and have no plans in ever doing so.
So why is every messenger so interested in my personal information? I don't want to share this. Is there an alternative that is not so interested in your personal information?
I am on the internet since 2000 and haven't given my phone number to any company since, why should I start now?
I won't.

I think u should have another number for it,for bussines or soc med purpose only
Sent from my Lenovo A390_ROW using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

You mean get a pre paid phone and use that number?
Still it has my phone number which is tied to my personal address.

Not new phone but new sim card i mean

Answer
If you don't want to give your phone number to any applications,
then you better say that you don't have a online chat/message service installed
There are apps available online to make a lock in whatsapp so that no one can view it except you.

Whatsapp?

Hey,
I want to use whatsapp on my Galaxy player, but i'm unable to do so. I've downloaded it from the whatsapp site and from 4shared, but when I install the app and try to accept the terms and conditions, the following occurs:
"Unable to identify your device, turn out the batteries and reboot."
"Tablets are currently not supported"
But I don't get it, because my friend has a tablet and he is able to use whatsapp, even though he doesn't have a phone number or a prepaid card in it.
So my question is: Has anyone been able to use Whatsapp on their Galaxy player? And if so, could you please be kind to explain how to do that?
Thanks in advance.
I think you have to have a phone#, unless it will work with a Google Voice#. I can't see paying $2/yr for something you can just use GV for (although it does look like it does a lot more). From their site:
Why do you ask for my phone number?
We ask for your phone number because that is how WhatsApp routes chat messages between you and your contacts, similar to how the regular SMS system would. We value your privacy and we have not, do not and will not ever sell your personal information to anyone. If you would like to learn more about our Privacy Policy, please take a look at our Privacy Notice.
I did find this page that might help you: http://planetlotus.org/profiles/mitch-cohen_96419

I have been investigating this matter and this app has the same problem as the XDA App(free version) and Tap Tap Revenge 4. I have created a hack that makes these apps work and I have released a beta of my next rom "Foreigner R5" that has the patch applied. However, this app will not function on the beta for other reasons. When foreigner R5 moves passed beta, this app will work.

So? What do you think i should do?
first, i wanna say THANK YOU to Meticulus for a fabulous rom. I am using it to my complete satisfaction. Thanks again.
second, i can prove that Viber works on beta R5 so i think half your whatsapp issue is solved, Rapydax. Until R5 comes out, u can use beta R5 with viber - message your buddies and all that + free calls worldwide.
third, google voice isnt available outside US yet.
and omg, fourth, keep an eye on R5 and trust Meticulus.
I will try the R5 as soon as it is finished.
Google is going to start charging to use their calling service next year. :'( So 2 bucks a year for whatsapp!!! I am going to get that. Also Groove IP is nice and Google Voice just got an update, and now you can call people from the Google Voice app. as well. ^^^Meticulus's Foreigner ROM^^^ is also BEAST!!! So if you are thinking about it, don't worry about it not working. Hope all goes well.

What do you mean by "Google is going to charge for Whatsapp"?
Also, Google Voice is for US only and I live in Europe. Hope they make it able for Europeans to make use of it.

I was not very clear. Google is going to start charging next year for their calling service, as of now it is free. Whatsapp is only 2 dollars a year, so I am now going to get Whatsapp. I am sure Google will expand to Europe. Just give it time.
not giving "them" time is all this forum is about.
Does Whatsapp let you make/receive calls? I thought it was only texting.
GV has been saying it's going to start charging "next year" for a few years now... if they do I'm sure it will be very cheap, and hopefully they won't start until all the bugs are worked out, and other countries can participate.

Caller ID Faker

I used this site for a while now but just realized they have an app which works just as good as the site. Unlimited free calls but the calls only last two minutes without a paid account. Two minutes is more than enough time to disguise your number on a call or to prank someone. It also lets you change your voice just like on the site. It will also record your calls so you can post your pranks to Facebook.
Someone has too much free tiime on their hands. lol
I used this app before its funny.. love to prank my wife at work.. lol
Nice find bro, just in really like this app.
I wish in this section of the forum they will put 50% apps threats and 50% themes. I am aware that xda is 98% for rooted guys, but I love to read threads about apps (non rooted) I assume that there is a bunch of people like me outthere.
Maybe I'm a nombre and there is a forum exclusively for news about apps but I searched in the market and those app reviews apps are ****

I mentioned "Evil Operator" by the PrankDail bunch in the previous thread and it does more than just fake caller id's........

You set it up to call two phone numbers out of your book and both phones ring with the caller id of your choosing and when they pick up they're talking to one another. It can get really funny if you set up with 2 people who dont like each other to begin with! LOL! Heres the web based version.......

and listen to some of these recorded pranks users pulled on folks using it, some of them are hilarious.......

Not google. Voicemail of your provider!
I already look for that.
I dont think you can.
Voice mail is the best choice you have.
some japanese android phones(like my sh-12c) have build in answering machine , not sure but maybe someone already made some good port !?
u can set the answering machine time when to pickup and to 3 different modes (normal, drive and manner)
there is an example video http://app-coming.jp/ja/articles/detail/64
i really love this function and miss this on my galaxy note T_T
dbaf14
Yes that would be great i used to have this on my Simbian phones voice mails are recorded straight to your device
someone attempted this on windows mobile but not Android yet (perhaps to many restrictions )
I was also looking for this type of application recently. Used to love this on my symbian but was shocked when i realised this had not been done fro droid as yet.
Is there a reason why it seems "impossible" on Android? Many of us have to PAY for voicemail and PAY with our minutes for retrieving voicemail!
And to those who would replay that this is a legal/privacy issue (like I've read elsewhere), I say, why should I trust my voicemail to my phone company or, God forbid, to Google?
Ridiculous omission
I want the same thing for my Note2, and for my S2 before that. It is a complete joke that Android does not have it built in. It is one area where Symbian is superior to Android. At the moment my only options are to have my provider turn off voicemail and refuse all messages, or to have them pile up which is incredibly inconvenient - if I have a meeting with somebody and they leave me a message there is no way I can go through a dozen messages to get to the latest one (especially without pen and paper to hand). Not to mention my provider does not even give me the phone number of the person that left the voicemail.
I've been waiting years for a simple voicemail app. It's pathetic one hasn't appeared. Even my Sony Z5 had it over a decade ago.

so my already saying in the "sh-12c root thread" lets make an own answering machine apk based on the japanese sharp one which worked fine for me in germany.
if everyone have same network talk flatrate and just my answering machine app take the call instead of me and record the saying... its free for everyone. ..
ill post the dumped files here again later.

and again I'm not alone in this search...yeah I'm a precious symbian user too
and here I was thinking that I'm prolly not using the right keywords to search
BTW we even had a software to set up an IVR on our phone in symbian
Count me in, I tried a couple of apps... They don't work quite as you expect though
+1 for answering machine app.
Sadly, I don't think it's an option on regular Androids due to either hardware or programming constraints. Doubt it's due to lack of user interest.
Hmmmm, maybe it's conspiracy by telco provides so they can rake in more $$$$.? (reaches for tin foil hat)
Again, for the benefit of the head scratchers out there ... Voicemail is NOT a free god given right to all phone users in the world. It costs money with some service providers. Hence the desire for "in phone" answering machine application.
hullo mail is a voice mail app that I use. It works in Ireland, the UK and America I think.

Software newb need help with Chinese phone.

Hi all. I've been following XDA for a long time. But since i am more into the hardware i need some help with the software.
I ordered a Bedove I5 from Uredeal.com . And i am not sure if the chinese have put some code in it which make all the things that goes over the internet is send trought there servers.
Whenever i open a chat (whatsapp, fb messenger etc.) and send something. It has a time stamp of 6 hours later. And messages i receive have a normal time stamp. This also happens with multiplayer games like wordfeud. an active game says for 6 hours long that its 0 seconds ago i made a move. and after 6 hours its going to count. I even got an email from google that someone in china tried to login to my account but they blocked it. I want to use my mobile also for mobile banking but with this in my mind its just not save and i dont want to take the risk.
If i manage to make a back-up from my rom, can someone take a look at it and if possible fix it for me (clean up my rom)?
I thank the person(s) that are willing to help me in advanced.
If someone knows a link to a clean rom for my device. Feel free to post.
Edit: I couldnt find one by myself.
Sent from my I5 using xda app-developers app
IMO, its more likely a poorly written ROM than spying going on. Either way I'd steer away from Chinese imports. It's not worth it. Spend a bit more for a real phone.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
How can you comfirm that? It can be both ways. But since i use this phone people out of china try to get on my gmail acc. So by this i think your argument false.
And the quality of chinese phones are getting higher and higher. I have totally no negative points about the phone. Its a good product. It doesnt even freeze which i see at most smartphone models. Everything workes good as it should be. No wifi or connectivity problems.
Ill try to root it and make a backup so people can look at it. And confirm if its a bad rom or spying. My feeling says spying.
There are some apps on it with the title in chinese. Cant delete them without root and dont know if they contain system information or the information they send everyting to...
Sent from my I5 using xda app-developers app
Have you tried to do a factory reset?
-kinetix118
I managed to make a back-up with mtkdroidtools. The funny thing is. When i finished the back-up. I saw a function in mtkdroidtools named "remove china". I tried that button with the temp root. and it removed all the chinese apps that where in the root of the phone and that the time and everything else is ok now.
I cant place the link to the back-up since i got less then 10 posts. I can private message it to someone who can post the link to here.

[req} Call Screener / Answering Machine

Hi All,
So this idea is from a Sanyo flip phone I had way back in the day on Sprint. Granted, it's not the most useful thing in the world, but it would be nice for times when you want to know why someone is calling before you answer the phone.
There was an option where after 4 rings the phone would answer play a locally stored greeting, then record a message locally. Now, the helpful part to me was the fact that (unless I hit a button to mute it) it would play the outgoing and incoming messages where I could hear them. Being this was several years ago, it couldn't play it over Bluetooth, which with better technology on both the device and headset ends, that would be possible. (My Motorola Elite Flip, for example)
But I'd like to see it go a step further, and make this a full featured answering / auto response system.
Say you're driving, and someone calls you, you hear the message they're leaving via your hands-free (either in car or headset) and decide you need to take the call. Instead of pressing a button, just say "Answer it". Or say "Ignore it" and the answering system would mute, the phone audio would return to whatever you had on previously, be it music or sat nav.
Similarly, if someone sends you a text, you could have it read to you on TTS, then the app would ask "Would you like to reply?" You could say "No" and the app would send a canned message ("I'm driving. I'll get back to you soon." or something similar), or say "Yes" then dictate your message by speech recognition.
With this, an auto filter would also be handy. Numbers not in your phone book, or numbers you set as black list, are automatically sent to the screener, while other contacts are not.
I think greetings should also get some options as well, like the option to have different greetings for different callers, or different caller groups, and the option to either record your greeting, or write one to be played to callers by TTS.
I've seen apps that do bits and pieces of this idea, but nothing that consolidates them, and the apps I've tried don't work very well, and they don't have the right feel. This app should be something that would feel like it was included stock on Android. Clean, simple, and intuitive.
Anyone interested in a project?
Apologies for any typos. I can't find my reading glasses.

Some of the places I go for service calls are out of range of a data network, and if there is one, it's only EDGE, which isn't really going to work for GV. I used GV for a short while and wasn't very impressed with it.

Nokia's are good devices, but Samsung is better. Wish I could get my hands on one app that can do what I'm looking for.
I'm looking for an app which will let me:
Say someone phones me. It rings a couple times then they have to say their name. I will then hear their message of their name and can choose to ignore it or answer it accordingly.
Is this what this app is?
Sent from my SM-G900F using XDA Free mobile app
Part of it, yes, although they would be able to leave more than just a name. That part would function like an onboard answering machine.

Good idea!
I was recently looking for an app that did this but i cant find a decent one. I had this feature on my first color flip phone back in the day and i wondered why it wasnt available today. Its really useful. Im not a developer or id be heping you out with this project please let me know if you ever make it happen. Good luck.
I think with android limitations ...u cant play the greeting to the Caller. So i guess the app would be for rooted Phones only.
..Even with a rooted phones.. An app wont do the purpose. becoz u need to to do some framework changes.
I think u are going to need a MOD which can be flashed from recovery.
I am ready to donate for this app or Mod. or do it my self if someone guides me with some Links ..+1
