Widgets do not work ((( - Kindle Fire HDX 7" & 8.9" Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

People, tell me please, why can not I put a widget on your desktop? Put Wallpaper Fix, Nova Launcher - put wallpaper and no widgets. Decided to put KindleFree - activated widgets there, but the result is still zero (((
Sorry for my bad English.

If you had read any of half a dozen threads you would know kindle free doesn't work on this tablet.

I have the 7" and kindlefree worked for most things. It got the custom launcher and widgets working for me. Google Play and live wallpapers however do not work currently.

I got widgets working on Apex Launcher by installing it as a system app.
Edit: download the apk and place it in /system/app (don't install). Uninstall any other versions of the app and reboot. Nova should work the same as apex, you will just need to find the apk.

so this is verified not to brick.....we can add system files without causing problems..

We do? I just downloaded Nova off Play store (did NOT install as system) and widgets work fine here. I have UCCW, cLock, and other widgets here.

Noob and launcher confusion

This may be a dumb question But I am new to the Nook Tablet and the Android world (I still have a flip-phone) and could use some help.
I am rooted (Thanks Indirect and albertwertz! There is a special place in the afterlife for those who help others!) and I chose Honeycomb launcher.
I would like to try other launchers but do not know if I have to re-root in order to do so or can I install another and just change to that?
Any advice on the best launcher would be appreciated also. I know this is subjective but I appreciate your opinion.
And one more question. If I re-root and have purchase apps from the Android Market and Amazon can I re-download them without paying or can i back them up (I have Titanium Backup) and restore them.
Thanks for any replies, All help is appreciated!
Once you are rooted, you will stay rooted unless you unroot yourself or are unrooted by an OTA update. So yes, you can try other launchers. And anything you purchase through Google or Amazon can be redownloaded at no charge as long as you are signed in with the same account.

To install another launcher just install the apk or go to the Market and install one through there.
To get rid of Honeycomb Launcher, just go to the Android Market > My Apps and click on HCL Launcher and then Uninstall.
I recommend ADW Ex launcher, it's by far my favorite of all and really has amazing customization potential. A great out-of-the-box launcher is Go Launcher EX, which may be good for you until you get a hang of things.
Just to show what I've accomplished with ADW Ex, check this out.
Hi, I can't seem to uninstall Go Launcher Ex as I'd like to stick with ADW. Does anyone know how to do that? I get an error when I try to do it.

What does the error say?
Did you try the uninstall through the'manage apps' interface?
Sent from my BNTV250 using Tapatalk
Do you mean through the Android Market? If so, yes, and it says it is uninstalled, but then it can be selected through the home button interface again and is still there.

Did you move it to /system/app rather than /data/app?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using Tapatalk
goex.apk is in system/app -- i dont have an /app folder in data
That's why it's not uninstalling from the market. System apps don't work that way. You can delete it from /system/app.

OK, good to know, thank you. However, I can't seem to delete it. Any suggestions for doing so? Maybe I'm not using the right file browser?

I'd just use ES File Explorer, but you have to make sure you mount the system as read-write first.

Thanks, lavero.burgos -- that worked for me.
Sounds like your not doing half bad for yourself as an android newbie! I have to ask, are considering an upgrade from your old flip phone yet? =p

[Q] Launcher ?

Is there a way to take stock launcher out of system apps and replace with a different launcher of your choice so I don't have 2 launchers on my phone hogging it? I am rooted on 2.2 acclaim.
use root explorer and delete your stock launcher in /system/app/ or use titanium backup..
Sent from my LT18i
That won't conflict anything?
Sent from my SCH-R880 using Tapatalk
I think you can use titanium backup and delete the stock launcher.
Deleting your stock launcher is never a good idea.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
Do a CWM backup before anything, also make sure to have the launcher you actually want to have as the main one, already installed and put into system/app folder just incase something happened where you can't do anything an have to hard reset, losing the launcher not in system/app in the process.
MoPhoACTV Initiative
What do you mean hogging it? Just check default launcher to what ever launcher you like and done. I wouldn't recommend deleting default launcher.
Well I was told I can intergrate my launcher into my rom,but know how I do that.
how about you just freeze it using titanium, and use your fav launcher, wont conflict, dont worry..
Sent from my LT18i
I thought about doing that.
Deleting the stock launcher is not a good idea and neither is freezing it. What do you gain by freezing it? You don't free up any additional resources and as long as you change the defaults it will not run. You should always have a fall back launcher just in case.

why did you say that?did you try and finally brick your phone?if that so why dont you state the "not a good idea" thing here,so our friend here will not do that as you suggest
p.s:im using xperia arc s stock rom with modded touchwiz launcher, work brilliant, plus i delete the stock launcher, and finally using v6supercharge to make bulletproof launcher

It depends on the launcher. I don't think substituting the default launcher with a third party launcher (like Go Launcher, etc.) is a good idea. Do you disagree?

[SOLVED] How to remove widgets from menu?

I know how to remove widgets from the home screen, and this is not a post about that . . .
With the new Google Play, and some other "necessary" apps I have, my widget menu is now flooded with widgets of apps I know I will never use -- is there a way to remove them so that my list is more succinct?
You can use root explorer or a similar app to delete the widget from the phone. The apps are generally located in system/app.
Alternatively, you can use titanium backup to first backup the widget (in case you decide you want it later) and then delete it.

That would delete the whole app though, wouldn't it? A better alternative would be to use an app like AutoStarts. This will allow you to disable "Widget Updating" associated with the widgets you never use. This app isn't free, but I'm sure there are many similar free ones out there.
I tried both of these -- I'm on an AOSP ROM so my widgets aren't in system/apps like they are in sense . . .
I tried that autostarts program, it will only kill the widgets from updating, but won't remove them from the menu . . .
Hopefully this Google Play will be less invasive as time goes, but I'm sure things will only get worse . . .
Thanks for both suggestions

Google now launcher

Hey Guys!! I am really happy to inform you that google now launcher is fully compatible with our galaxy grand quattro/win.. pls follow the below steps carefully and enjoy the google experience!
1. go to the link http://d-h.st/f6b and download launcher 4.4 .zip.
2. Now download 'libgoogle_recognizer_jni_l.zip' attached to this thread and extract it.
Copy the 'libgoogle_recognizer_jni_l.so' to system/lib in your mobile (since i use Jasp Next Level Rom, i made use of Root Browser in "ROM TOOLBOX LITE".)
overwrite the file if need be...
You can skip this step as i heard this is not necessary but i did follow it
3.Extract the launcher 4.4.zip...Now First install velvet.apk and then PrebuiltGmsCore.apk and lastly GoogleHome.apk.. dont worry if the google search force closes.. carry on..
4.Now after u install the GoogleHome, go to playstore and update ur google search and google playservices....
And thats it everything works perfectly!!

Even without that it was working properly man I am on Google experience launcher for 3 months now there haven't been any problem
recognizer zip is not required at all.
Start with Google Search 3.2+, and Google Now Launcher initializes itself.
I've been using it since it first came out on nexus 5.
Exactly man same here
Duh! I feel like a complete idiot now... :crying: Anyways i hope this wil help those who aren't aware of it...

Its good but cant sort the apps in app drawer. ..... they are alphabetically arranged and its difficult to locate an app..
And one thing more is, there any screen lock app that resembles the google experience launcher style or nexus sty. ..?

No, icon arrangement in app drawer is probably still under progress, in Xposed GEL Settings.
You can use AOSP Lockscreen from Xposed.

Disable Trebuchet and Google Now Launcher

Under CM11, is there a way to either remove or disable the Trebuchet and Google Now Launchers? I don't use this (use Apex instead) so I really don't want them running and taking up space and resources.
It looks like I can't disable them in the normal manner (in Settings...Apps) so wondering if there is another way.

You can freeze those using TiBu or any other app.
Or delete the .apk from system with a root explorer.

After I sent this I thought I could delete it, so I found and got rid of Trebuchet.... But I couldn't find the Google Now Launcher. Do you know what and where that launcher's .apk is at?
