[Q] S-Off Clarification and ROM advice - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Hi, I rooted last night.
I'm boot unlocked.
S-ON
TWRP 2.6.3 (updated by Goo Manager)
SU User 1.8.6
Unlock took me down to 4.1.1
I tried to flash the most recent CM ROM in Goo Manager after a dalvik cache wipe and got stuck on boot. Is this likely because I'm S-ON or because I didn't use the right type of wipe?
Also, I know the MikMik ROM was the gold standard for a clean, lean and stable ROM without many bells and whistles on OG EVO. What is the equivalent for LTE/jewel? And so I need S-OFF for it?
Thanks in advance!

You have to flash the kernel separately from the ROM when S-on. Having said that, you don't have to be S-off to flash a ROM, but, as easy as the process is, it's worth it to be S-off. Take a look at the top link in my sig for more info. As for ROM advice, just start flashing until you find what you like. If you ask ten different people what their favorite is, you'll likely get ten different answers

Something equivalent I'd say "MeanBean " read the OP for this rom

Thank you!
Thank you. I was finally starting to understand that I would probably need to S-Off so I could flash the kernel for a ROM other than one that uses a stock kernel. I was just hoping to avoid it, because I usually know just enough to be dangerous to my electronic devices...
I'll be sure to check out Mean Bean.

Mean Bean actually has a kernel installer to make flashing while S-on easier. Just make sure you read the Mean Bean OP so you follow the correct steps to get it installed properly.

HI i'm kinda a noob on this stuff (but learning) ...anyways
I can't seem to be able to get ics on my evo 3d .. it's a sprint cdma version it's got s - off all I want is a kool rom/kernal with the following
i think the problem is that im using gsm roms/kernals (why can't developers put that in their descriptions)
I'm looking for the following features
(CDMA)
I.C.S.
3d camera
over-clocking
battery saver
full beats audio
and some kool eye candy
i tried many roms and kernels but nothing works.. either the phone freezes at the first htc screen .. or it goes to the first htc screen vibrates and then reboots in a loop (i found a few were gsm such as king cobra)
i tried the fastboot method .. clockwork mod...and 4ext.. nothing works ... am i loading the wrong kernal/roms... mabe someone can point me to what im looking for ?
can anyone help me ?
thank you so much
What hboot are you using?

Yes, it would be better if you gave us more details. Such as, what ROM you are using.
ALso, can you create a step by step run down of your flashing process?
Maybe we can see what you did wrong.
The first post has enough information. Sprint is CDMA, King Cobra is GSM. You need a ROM from the CDMA development forum.

yea some were gsm i guess

Go to the EVO 3d cdma development. The gsm and cdma sub forums are split. I'd recommend using the kernel that comes with the Rom. And no, you can't use any kernel with any Rom.
Just find a Rom that you like and flash it. Don't worry about kernels as much.

If you really want to tweak your system and stuff, you can get the Anthrax kernels (search google). Though you have to sign up to their forum. Also, make sure you read which version the kernel is for. No every kernel cannot work for every version.
can i do this?

I wanted to put this on but if i have a delema .. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1466362
ok its a sprint evo 3d flashed to boost
on that link it says -- 1.2.17.651.5 ROMs need the latest firmware. See freeza's all in one firmware update if you haven't done that already. If you unlocked via the HTC method, you know the drill: you'll have to take the OTA and then re-unlock.--
the thing is most of the features i want are handled by the kernel such as o.c / battery saver / beats / ect... thats the only reason i want to change my kernel
heres the question,,, being i originally did the htc unlockr which made it s-on then did the wire trick and made it s-off will i still need to unlock the phone then relock it ..see here is the problem we found that when we did the wire trick i had to reflash to boost it reset the sprint info (at least that what we think happend) ... and this is not an option right now (the guy that did it for me is at school)
is there a way i can install the freezas firmware..anthrax kernel(which it requires) and the mean rom with out having to reflash boost?
If you are already s-off, then no do not relock. I would really suggest you just start all over. Because if you keep on flashing you could mess it up.
Just take thr ruu for your phone version and start over. You may loose root. But i believe you will still be s-off.
Root again then install recovery, make backups, wipe everything in recovery, then install the rom.
By the way you will have to use joeykrim's flashimageGUI app to flash the kernel before the rom IF you are on1.5 hboot. If you are 1.4 hboot disregard.

thats the part i think if load the stock ruu it resets it back to sprint ...also i am on 1.5 but i thought that was the point of going s-off so i i dont have to use programs like flash image gui... (although i have tried it)
i a little confused

Like I said, I think ou should start over. Take the 2.17 ruu.exe. I also suggest you downgrade via the "bricking" method and then root using revolutionary.
If you don't want to do that then, root with htc method. And do not install the boost firmware! Install recovery, make backup, use flashimageGUI or 4ext. And install rom.
You have to do this on 1.5
If you downgraded to 1.4 then you can disregard flashimageGUI
I think your problem is that you flashed the boost firmware. You could have kept the original meanrom and nothing would have happened.
Just start over.

Gingerbread to ICS (CDMA)

Long story short… I have been very busy for the last 6 months and not been keeping up with all the changes for the CDMA EVO 3D. I am not really sure the best way to get from here to there. I am not a noob and don’t really need my hand held or a dummy’s guide (I have been messing with Android since the HTC Hero and rooted lots of phones and pads). There has been just to many new ways to root and leaked roms…etc. It would be nice to skip all the BS and get caught up with what most people are currently doing.
My current config…
H-Boot: 1.40 s-off via Revolutionary Method
Recovery: TWRP v2.1.1
Rom: ViperRom Redline v2.5 RC2
Would it be better to just RUU back to stock Gingerbread then upgrade to ICS and re-root or is better way to get to ICS with root???? I am not trying save anything on my phone. I am a big fan of wiping and super wiping multiple times before loading a new rom. Also is there any benefit to H-Boot 1.5 or higher?
If this has already be asked can you point me to the correct thread.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If I'm reading right, just search the development forums for an ics rom, flash it and you're good to go. NEVER TAKE OTA
Sent from my EVO 3DMA with a little "Common Sense"
Tl;dr.
Just kidding. I'm running the latest ics rooted Roms on hboot 1.4 revolutionary s-off. I ran freeza's firmware update without the new hboot. This lets me run everything except the new kernel (which most new Roms don't use). If you insist on the new kernel, you can upgrade the hboot too, but you lose the ability to flash aosp and GB Roms.
So, in short, you just need to pick a rooted ics Rom and go. I like zr3dx, Meanrom, homebrew, or common ground.
I also recommend you change to 4ext recovery. It's really nice.

Thanks that was exactly what I needed and I was getting tired of reading all the posts about the VM fiasco, and sticking a wire in the SD card…etc.
You are right it was “Tl;dr” but I also hate threads that go on forever because you don’t have enough info to answer the question.

Been away for a while could use some help

Well... After an issue with the digitizer in my phone I had to finally have it recently replaced. I had recently loaded the ICS OTA and actually for the most part liked it alot. I have rooted and done some roms with my 3d when it was Hboot 1.4 with Rev S off and root method. But my phone is currently Hboot 1.5 after replacing it. I havent loaded it to the OTA for ICS. But im trying to decide what I want to do. Id like to root and S off if I can and find a Rom/OTA that works great with the best performance and options with reduced bloat. ICS is pretty cool that I used, but seemed like some bugs with it to. Any suggestions of help on getting me there and in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Ive done some searches here and there on the forum. But really after taking time out for a medical issue I havent been in the loop til now. Thanks ahead of time for any help and suggestions you can push my way.

Here's what I would do in your situation:
1. Do HTC unlock and flash 4EXT recovery
2. Backup current ROM so you have a nandroid of GB stock
3. Root GB stock ROM and do JuopunutBear (wire trick) with GB version to gain S-OFF
4. Flash 2.89 RUU.exe to get solid Sprint ICS base (firmware and software)
5. Flash Jbear Sprint ICS (1.58.5858) or engineering (ENG) bootloader
6. Flash 4EXT recovery (via fastboot flash recovery.img)
7. Backup current ROM so you have a nandroid of ICS stock
8. Flash whatever ROM's you want to try and check them out
If all the ROM's you are interested in are ICS Sense, then the JB Sprint ICS bootloader is fine, but if you want to flash and run GB and AOSP ROM's the ENG bootloader is a better choice, but it won't run the 2.89 stock kernel.
That's one opinion.

Thanks Ramjet. What are you using or have you used? Is ICS the latest? Any other good stuff out there?
If anyone else has suggestions or preferences Id love to hear them.

The Sprint ICS 2.89.651.2 release with Sense 3.6 is the latest official build, but there have been several CM10 based ROM's released using the AOSP 4.1.1 (Jelly Bean) base, and some Sense 4.0 and 4.1 ROM's that run on the E3D.
My favorites are still MeanROM ICS 2.6 and SOS M 2.6.1 which use the same base. Here's a post I wrote back in May that enumerates the fixes mikeyxda had done to the VM leak base at that time and most of those fixes and enhancements were transferred to the Sprint ICS 2.89 based version, with some new ones added. SOS M is de-Sensed and offers a lot of customization built-in and via the Aroma installer with a minimal amount of effort. Both ROM's are fully functional and have good reliability, performance and battery life.
I've tested a lot of interesting ROM's with some unique features including Paranoid Devil with a tablet configuration option and Charmander with Sense 4, but they both have some stuff not working, including 3D and WiMax/4G. If you don't need those features you might also want to try some of the AOSP ROM's (CM9, CM10 and MIUI) since they are very light and clean, and a lot of the current development activity seems to be with those ROM's. If you want a full ICS Sense 3.6 based ROM with a lot of mods integrated, Cool ICS is worth a look too.
ramjet73
Thanks Ramjet. Im gonna check out the MeanRom ICS, SOS and Cool ICS. In past ive liked a sense based rom but Im open to other stuff. My main thing is wanting as few as issues or non working things as possible. Even the OTA of ICS has to muc issues. But the in general feel and look was good.
Thanks for the input and direction. I may hit you up on some advice if thats cool? Thanks again.
Just use the search function to find all the info on the stuff above Ramjet? or is there a good central location that might have links for everything?

A lot of the information and links that you will need are in mpgrimm2's guides in this forum. Just do an advanced search on threads started by user mpgrimm2 and you should have most of the information and links you need in those threads.

Ok So I got it unlocked. and installed the APK of the 4EXXT recovery. But its giving me some issues saying I need S-off before I can use it? I assume its a program that runs on the Phone not a recovery like ive been used to with the boot loader? If its a flash that flashes the boot loader i seem to be having issues finding it. How do I need to go about rooting? Is root the same as S off? Its been a while since doing all this kinda stuff and just getting back into it. Thanks for any direction you can give me.

This post by mpgrimm2 (part of his overall guide) covers flashing a custom recovery (like 4EXT) and superuser from the PC command prompt via fastboot. Those are the two steps required for rooting, after you have HTC unlocked.
Once you've done that you can move on to gaining S-OFF with either the JuopunutBear (wire trick) or Hboot downgrade method, which is setting the security off for the NAND memory of your phone, and allows you to flash more stuff and not have to use the fastboot command to do it.
It's probably time to move on to the Q&A forum since this has changed from an advice thread into a help thread.

Possible D3rp Question: downgrading from JB to ICS

Hi Guys,
All apologies, I could not find reference to this question anywhere for the HTC Evo 3d forum but my forum foo is not yet strong. So if you'd like to hit me with the D3rp Bat feel free, but provide linky to reference as well if you could.
So I'm going to be upgrading my phone to a Samsung Galaxy Note II and am handing my HTC Evo 3D to my wife. She is entirely new to Android (and smartphones) and I want her experience to be smooth. So given that we're all still playing around with JB and lots of functionality items aren't rock solid or hammered out yet (wifi tether, for ex.) I would like to downgrade her to ICS where I can load a bunch of tried and tested ROMs that I know will be solid for her.
Question: Is there a guide to do this somewhere? I've looked, can't seem to find it.
My understanding is I'll need to reflash the hboot, kernel and rom, am I forgetting anything else? I'm currently running JB kernels and roms and my HBOOT is 1.49.1107 Rev ShooterU. My recovery is TWRP (LOVE twrp!) v2.3.1.0
Also, if I have unlocked the sim will I need to flash the sim unlock file again after downgrading?
Sorry for the nubbin questions.
Thanks folks!
You don't need to change hboot and considering you are s-off you could just flash an ics rom from recovery (after wiping ofc). Then if you want you can change your kernel as well. not sure about the sim unlock though..

You sir, are a scholar and a gentleman for answer me!
I'd need to flash an ICS Kernel too though, yeah? Simlock isn't such a big deal since I can just flash the file again from Hboot if need be. I'm currently running the 3.0.16-poonkang+ kernel but truth be told I'll likely go back to Turge's ICS Rogers build since it was rock solid and I know my wife will be really turned off of the whole smartphone experience if the phone is buggy.
Thanks again man.
The kernel comes with the rom zip file sir. As long as you are s-off there no need to flash the kernel seperately. Just wipe data, flash rom, reboot and you're good to go

Returning Back to Stock From Cyanogenmod 10.2

Hello to anyone who is gracious enough to help me. I am currently trying to revert my HTC Evo 4G LTE back to any stock rom for the purpose of trying to use Straight Talk. After finding out that there's really no way of using Straight Talk with CM, I am now attempting to go back to any working stock rom. I have run into brickwall after brickwall. If there is anyone out there that can lead the way, please help me. Everytime I mess around with my phone, I don't know whether to grab a USB cable or a box of tissues from all the tears that are about to be had. Anyways. I appreciate anyones time on the matter. Thank you and remember to brush your teeth.

If you're S-off, you can simply flash a stock ROM like Captain Throwback's 3.17 base ROM (it's based off the most recent OTA update from Sprint). If you're not S-off you'll need to flash the kernel (boot.img) separately from the ROM itself. For more info on how to do that, hit the top link in my sig and scroll down to the section on S-on kernel flashing.
Here is a link to Captain Throwback's ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2468418
You'll need to install the SuperSU app from the Play Store to have root access after flashing his ROM.
