Exploit nandroid backup... B) - Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini, Mini Pro, Xperia Pro, A

I dont know whether u guys are doing these.. Anyway just sharing, for those who don't...
I usually get bored when i use same ROM for 2-3 weeks.. So I'll flash new one..As u all know customizing new rom is not an easy thing.. (even though we have titanium backup etc) It is a tough task..right..?
So what I do is, I take nandroid backups of fully customized custom roms b4 flashing new ones.. and store in my PC
Like that I've many nandroid backups of almost all custom roms that i used..
So now a days when i get bored of my rom, simply restore any of that favourite old nandroid.. :good:
5minutes max... fon in full swing..
Told u already that u may feel it stupid if u r doing these already..
Also I dont know whether restoring nandroid many times will harm our device.. Well, nothing happened for me till date..
Thanks 4 reading..

Update ROM, keep all settings?

Hello,
im am using the latest official ROM by HTC (2.73.405.5).
Can i upgrade to another ROM (Modaco or smth else..) without losing all my settings, apps, messages and files?
Thank you,
m0jo.
..or can i create a nandroid backup, install a new rom, and if i dont like it, just roll back to my old rom with all my settings using nandroid restore?
*bump* sorry guys
if you have the recovery image, yes a nandroid backup will keep all your settings.
including app settings and everything, like EVERYTHING ahahah
If you read modaco's post with his rom, I think he says you dont have to "wipe" (from the recovery image) if you come from your version. (double check though).
so i think youd keep all if not then most of your settings if you dont wipe and just install the rom.
ps i thought i read somewhere that his rom might not be up to speed if you dont wipe first, but by all means, if you have a nandroid backup, then try it out!
(ps i found this out the hard way but updating back to ruu from htc website erases reovery image) not that this is even that relevent
just make a nandroid backup, then update without wiping. if it doesn't work restore the backup and find another way or fix the problem, if it works be happy...
thank you.
but next time pls tell me that all my settings ARE gone AND my phone loses a lot of features so i have to reinstall the official ROM... :/
i cant see how you lost your settings if you didnt do a wipe... but then thats why we said do a nandroid backup! so restore to that from your recovery image
all my settings are gone, i had to configure my phone like i started it the first time.. The only thing that was not lost, were my apps. But some of them are gone though.

then you did something wrong. if you don't wipe then your settings won't be deleted. modaco's custom rom 3.0 does NOT delete your settings during installation, i have done it like 30 times. also you were told several times to make a nandroid backup. if you did you can restore it and EVERYTHING is back like before. if you didn't do it is entirely your fault, don't blame us.
and what features exactly are you missing? mcr3.0 is full of features, you are eather dumb, blind or drunk

Proper way to backup everything before flashing roms?

First time user, long time lurker...
I am new to the Android world and have had my Eris since about a month after it came out. I followed the guides and got the rooted 2.1 rom onto my phone. I figured I was fine with that and began installing all my apps again, setting my screens up, etc etc... I then read some more on these forums and decided I wanted to get the recovery partition and the 2.1 v0.3 custom rom. I lost everything (obviously).
Soo.. my question is, is there a proper way to backup all my apps before flashing custom roms in the future? Is it the NAND backup within the recovery image? Also, once the custom rom is flashed, what is the proper way to restore? Looking for a bit of guidance here. Thanks everyone!
That's a good question, I just got rooted and am about to do the rest, but don't want to lose anything
ok when u make a nandroid or BART backup it only backs up that build ur on at the time of the back up. no u cant restore the the backup after u flash a new rom and get the new rom plus ur apps. if u flash a new rom ur pretty much at a start over thing. but the market actually remembers what apps u have downloaded and will actually show them all in downloads or give u a notification that u have updates waiting.
now if u do a nandroid or BART restore it will flash ur entire backup over the new rom u installed. they way i and most others go about flashing and backing up is like this:
first: do a nandroid or BART backup of builds uve setup already and have all ur stuff setup on. sometimes ur gonna flash a builsd and run it for a few days or something and maybe decide u liked the older build better. so u got that nandroid/bart backup to always fall back on.
second: before u flash any new rom u gotta understand some builds are signed with different keys and thus will at times cause issues with apps and such. so before every new rom flash. do a wipe to both data and dalvik-cashe
third: flash the update.zip from the sdcard and enjoy. if u have issues with a build always before saying screw it and doing the nandroid. do a second wipe and see if that fixes some of the issues u may have had with that rom. if u still have issues or wanna go back to that rom u made a nandroid/bart backup of. just go into recovery and do a nandroid/Bart restore choose the one u want and restore away
Thanks for the detailed answer glad my first post was a good question lol

If I delete some files from /system/, can I get them back by reflashing XWKE7 ?

I have frozen quite a lot of apps by using Titanium Backup, and I'm thinking that since I don't really miss them I might as well uninstall them completely... But at the same time I don't want to lose them forever and regret it in a few months if I ever need one of those.
So, does flashing a firwmare restore everything like stock ?
Thanx !
yes it will.
i uninstalled all the samsung hubs and things like zino reader ect and flashing back to a stock ROM will bring everything you took off back.
Thank you ! Just wanted to be sure =)

[Q] Slow, Laggy Phone

My phone is quote slow and laggy and it's quite surprising seeing as this phone is meant to be known for it's speed and power.
I have rooted with cf-root , I don't really know if this means if I have a custom kernel.
All I want to know is if there is a custom ROM or kernel to help with this. If yes, which one. Many developers claim there stuff speeds up phones but obviously they're bias. I want neutral opinions from people with experience of different things.
Before people tell me to search I can only access the net through my phone and the drop down search button don't work.
First of all rooting your phone is good cos it now means that you can flash a custom ROM.Something that cant be done on stock. For the moment stay with CF-Root as they are basically stock rooted kernels and at the moment I dont think you need to get into overclocking and undervolting and all that stuff that more advanced kernels can do cos if you do it wrong yourve got problems. As for ROMs your right. All Devs will say that they have the best one and all happy users, yes like myself, will say they use the best one too.The problem is that everyone has different likes and needs. No one who has spent time on this site has ever only had ONE ROM on their phone. Its impossible to not turn into a flashaholic at some stage. The best you can do is read threads and try some. Not the answer you wanted but its the best and only way to find what you want.Try mine.I love it.The link is below the big blue Omega sign. Its the one that says "GB".If you dont like it then try something else.Theres really no other way to find out what you want unless you try for yourself.
I see.. So I simply download the custom ROM and install it through clockwork mod?
Do I have to back up my phone with titanium back up before I install custom roms?

Step 1 - backup with titanium.
Step 2 - reboot into cwm or with the cwm app, create a backup. So, if you flash something that you don't like or if it wont boot, you can restore it. This is a complete system and data backup. A 1:1 copy of your phone setup, excluding modem which defaults to whatever you are running at the time of restore.
Step 3 - try some custom roms. I use Checkrom (older version - v2) and phone flies.
Anyway, something must be wrong with your setup because every rom I've used has been fast, even stock.
ps : sent you a pm.

Once you get sorted then do an EFS backup. The EFS folder contains your IMEI number and if for whatever reason you should loose it or it becomes corrupt then you are in the poo.Download the "release.zip" and follow the easy instructions.

I was using checkrom v4 and then v6 for a little while both with SiyahKernel which worked really well.
Currently using CM9 but I wouldn't go there until your comfortable fixing things and regularly flashing.
But definately select your rom and then try changing kernels if you think it will benefit you.

@cooza when should I back up this eps, everyone time I change ROM or everyone I change kernel? I don't even know what it is lol
@sxi200 you say there must be something wrong with my setup, could you explain in a little more detail what you think I should change please?
Just thought I would *Bump* the thread as i'm slightly desperate for the random rebooting. It happens approximately once or twice a day.
did u use wipe data/factory reset while installing a new rom?
expierienced some funny things like lag etc also while trying different roms,
my fault was not wiping the cache ...

One Factory reset the phone this will wipe all data
Two upgrade firmware via Kies if firmware is available .
Three flash a later stock Samsung rom .
Four any of the answers already posted .
Five wait for Samsungs ICS update .
i see you have rooted but dont know what root is for or even any of the basics .
Read the guides and stickies .

Its possible that you have rooted with a wrong file .
But you give zero information .

How powerfull is a Nandroid backup?

Let's say I make a Nandroid backup of what I have right now: Nils One xxx rom. Next I flash Joelz venasaur rom and decide that I like Nils rom better. Would it be safe to restore from the nandroid backup I just made or would it be better to reflash?
Edit: spelled powerful wrong, apologies.
Perfectly safe to restore the nandroid, That's what they are for. Just make sure to wipe first.
well
providing you have s-off its ok to go to any ics rom you please as long as you nandroid, but form ics to gb you have to have the corresponding hboot, you can also do patched version but i really dont recommend it.
However , if your s-on you can go from sense 4 roms to others , you wont go past the boot up screen , and vice versa.
i could never get nandroid back ups to work on my droid x...it has worked flawlessly everytime on my rezound...not sure why but i suspect it has something to do with the work arounds regarding root and the bootstrap method for getting into a custom recovery...either way they never worked well so much so that i thought it was a load of ****, that is until i started flashing roms on my rezound...same thing with titanium back up...i spend too much time getting my apps back to my liking, so i may give TB another shot since i could never get those back ups to work either...

The nandroid process wipes the partition before restoring so that isn't needed

If you're s-on, you need to manually flash the kernel (boot.img) or use the helper script when going between roms with different kernels, Nandroid can't restore it on an s-on phone...
Thanks guys, question has been answered!
