[Q] HDX 7in battery life gaming? - Kindle Fire HDX 7" & 8.9" Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Hi all, I just got my device and I can only get around 2h30min playing Anomaly Warzone 2 (some of the best graphics out there).
Compared to 11 hours of usage time amazon advertizes it pretty much supprises me,
Is it normal? Or I got a flawed device?

Gaming will always have am affect on the battery on the device. Have you tried letting the battery reset itself by letting it drain to 0% and then charging it back up to 100% before use?

Draining it to 0 is for nimh/nicad, not lithium...

I still haven't been to sleep so pardon my mistake.
But aside from my post about resetting the battery, if you are running a game that is very intensive then your battery life will drain very fast. But using a web browser you should at least get good battery life.
Also are you running high brightness on your device?

11 hours is for basic use. Gaming soaks up CPU and GPU power like a sponge. I play quite a bit of Real Racing 3 and I easily eat up 10-20% of battery in about 10 races or so.

Yes I set the brightness to auto adjusting. I sat by my window in broad daylight so I guess the screen brightness is maxed out. But still it is kinda sad because my old Ipad Mini managed to get 4 hours of infinity blade 2 in same scenario.
I get about 5-6 hours browsing webs, facebook in, chatting... Etc... By the way.

The iPad is also basically an app drawer. iOS doesn't drain the battery as much as Android does.

[Q] Poor battery life

I'm having very poor battery life compared to my samung galaxy tab 10.1 and my motorola xoom
Im getting about 5 to 6 hours of screen on time. Most of the time I browse the web and play some gamesWith the galaxy tab 10.1 I used to get around 10 hours abd wih the xoom about 9.
Is just me or are you having te same problem?
I also can't see the battery usage stats.

For battery usage missing go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424679
For battery drain, are you in balanced power mode? The display would be the next thing I would check. Make sure your do not have the brightness up too high or that new IPS+ brightness feature turned up for outdoor viewing.
im using most of th time nrmal mode and using my tablet indors with low brightness. Can i calibrate my battery or what should I do?

even with low brightness, having it in Normal mode drains the fastest. normal mode is when Prime is running at Max power. combine that with web surfing slot and that's the cause. web surfing puts a strain on battery as its constant using more n more ram n rendering pages, etc.. even so it seems you should be getting better battery life even with that configuration. do you have alot of Widgets set up to update very frequently? do u have your email set up to update frequently? do u have something else rubbing in the background that you're not aware of? all of those things will cause battery to drain faster.
if you want the best battery life and power use balanced mode instead. even in balanced mode, its far more powerful than the galaxy tab or xoom you mentioned. make sure to check for those other things mentioned also. you should get better battery life than that though even in normal mode. you could also decrease the display timeout.
since the normal battery usage setting that shows apps battery usage is bugged in HC in prime, go to the market place. download a free app called Android Assistant. its 18 tools in one. on there it has an app battery usage sections and you can check there to see what's been draining battery the most aside from display. .

plus technically its still too early for battery to be fully broken in and calibrated yet. it has to go through several full charge and discharge cycles before it gets to optimal battery performance.
I'm at around a day on normal with auto brightness. Use it mostly to browse the web and xda. Play a few games as well.
Yeah battery isnt as good as everyone makes it out to be. Since i got it on dec 23rd I have had to charge it up every night.
In the morning its at 100% (10am) then I take it with me to work, usally dont even have time to use it but sometimes i do. On a day that I dont end up using it at work at all, by the time I get home its at 93% (decent for being idle 10 hours, my hp touchpad is around 95% after my 10 hour work day and ipad 2 sits at 99-98%). then i start actually using the device, 10pm - 2am and im down to 50%. This is with very light use, checking email and usally watching a movie on the sdcard. By the time i goto bed its about 20% (3am).
So overall the battery is "OK". Gets about or close to what other tablets are getting in terms of battery life. My ipad 2 gets about 10 hours no matter what i do (gaming, browsing, videos). Asus Prime gets about 7-8 light use (email, sdcard movies, sd music) and about 6 hours heavy use (gaming and browsing).
Settings on my PRIME:
Balanced mode
10% brightness
super IPS + off
GPS off, Bluetooth off.

So then i guess every tablet can run for 12 hours or more in that case...
The prime is advertised as having 12 hours battery life when your using the device, not in idle... you are obviously trolling anyone that has something bad to say about the prime, Its shameful.
This is with heavy to light use. Wifi it always on. Screen set to auto. On normal mode. I have only charged it when the battery dies completely and don't unplug it until it is at 100% for awhile. There was 1 or 2 times where I charged before it died completely.

In all honesty, considering how much the device lags at times according to reports, I can't imagine running it in any other mode than Normal. I'd understand if the other modes would be lag-free for light activities like browsing, but they are not. At the moment, Normal is the 'best you get' in a bad situation.

I always drain my tablets once or twice a week till they shutoff and charge them up to 100% and unplug (if you leave them charging over night or drain them to 0% every night it will degrade).

this is funny as I run mines in balanced mode most of the time. its always lag free. what reports of lag you speak of? lol even when I put it in battery savings mode its smooth as hell. these so called reports along with others really have people who don't even own device misinformed. most so called reports here on general show device moves fast n smoothly. there has only been 1 video of so called lag in browser and that was trivial. as people thought video didn't really represent what was going on. other than that, there has been no proof of so called lag. especially coming from major reviews before release and after. I've basically used my tab nonstop and have a whole lot of stuff installed on mines with Widgets and live wallpapers and no lag at all what so ever. it'll be different of proof was out there bit there isn't. as far as memory goes funny how some new tabs announced with 2gb of RAM and now suddenly 1gb is not enough or its a little..lol. of course o would rather wish this had 2gb ram tl start off with but it doesn't. from what I can tell it doesn't hamper performance at all and seems to be enough.
ill just end this here. I could go on n on debunking these so called reports but not worth the time. it'll be different if it was a valid argument like GPS. which we know isn't working properly. as far as wifi, lag n everything else goes, its all trivial at best. as my device performs perfectly aside from GPS, which I've never fully tested yet. I'm a good candidate for using the tablet more than most considering use it for work also. so I'm day in and day out on this tablet. even developers who have posted reviews of prime are more than satisfied with performance. tell them the so called reports n see what they tell you in return..lmao
yup horrrible battery life #sarcasm
My battery life is about 6-7 hours so just like in TF101. And it was supposed to be so better....

Not if you are formatting battery for first few times - it is said to do like this in manual.
Ive heard of people going 32 hours with the dock, so you must be really whipping those 4 cores.

Do not believe this. It depends on how the person count it. I count ONLY the time of "Screen on". Some people makes Prime to sleep for 10 hours + work of 4 hours and they say their primes work for 14 hours
So after using the tablet if in options (battery monitor app) I see 6 hours of display on and I have 3% to go then I can tell my Prime works 6 hours on a single recharge.
That is the way it should be counted. Because you can;t work on tablet when screen is off right? (maybe if you listen to music)

And? What's wrong with this? It's normal for webbrowsing.
Well we have different ways of thinking when saying battery life.
I'm always on Normal w/ IPS @ about 20%. I've never had to use Super IPS mode even on a sunny day. IPS to 80-90% in the bright sun and is very lucid (and I live in AZ where we've been having 85 degree weather lately!)
That being said, I get so much out of the Prime and I've only drained it twice. Last night I drained it after 2 days of decent usage and no charging. I've been marathoning 'Homeland' on my laptop and using my Prime for everything else. I'd say I've had about 16 hours of entire usage over the past couple days. I did power the Prime off before sleeping to compare it's percentage loss to when it is asleep to when powered off so perhaps it's not a fair assessment, but I did use it quite heavily including streaming youtube, regular browsing, downloading apps, trying to get a lock on GPS and playing a flash game.
I think we should measure battery life only with screen on time, the problem right now is that the prime doesn't show the battery stats. Anyother way or app to have battey stats?

I have a note 10.1 3g and get 12ish hours screen on and 28 hours unplugged per charge. The note 2 has half the screen size of the note 10.1and just under half the battery size but jellybean is more efficient. Given that the other hardware is so similiar, 6 hours seems spot-on giving the scaling- 7+ is possible with the right settings. Can't wait for the Note 2 on ATT- this exynos 4412/Mali 400mp seems to be a kickass combo of performance and power efficiency.
There was also an article on a Russian site from a gnote 2 tester that reported the screen uses around 35% - 40% less power when displaying whites- that HUGE for Super AMOLED since whites have always been its weakness in terms of power consumption. That's getting close to the same power efficiency as Super LCD2.
Come on ATT....hope they sell the phone shortly after the 24th.

Note 1 life
I'll post a screenshot of the battery usage sometime, but I've been getting incredible life with my Note 1.. The other day I had 30% with 16 hours of use when I plugged it in at night. That's with streaming music for a couple hours, checking email, texts, making calls, and browsing (Normal use). Granted I'm using auto-brightness, dark backgrounds and non-stock cpu settings.. HOWEVER, when the screen is on for long periods (i.e. playing games) i'll drop 10% by the time i'm done.
Soo a Note 2 with a bigger battery and a better cpu should be amazing.

I'd want to see a non-rooted, stock, out of the box comparison between the two all circumstances being equal. Any other conditions aren't really comparing the battery life against the two devices.
Around 13-16 hours was what I was getting with my note out of the box. But running the ROM I'm on, I can get up to 30 hours like I did two days ago or 26 hours yesterday.

Honestly how long the battery lasts is not important to me...screen on time is. I use my device pretty heavily day to day, so it will always be charged overnight.
I see an avg of 4hrs screen on with my setup now. The note 2 sees well over 6+...I've seen them even double my screen on time. That's amazing.

Yeah not sure why we are always talk about stand by time, which will always last a full day if you only use the screen for a hour or so.
I have serious doubts about 5-6 hours when I am getting less than 2 hours screen time if I do pure LTE browsing, 3-4 hours if I do pure WIFI or low CPU tasks like reading books. In real life usage it is always going to be around 3 hours. Keep in mind the tests that websites like Anandtech are 100% optimal tests. In reality you will browse a wide variety of sites with different work loads and have wide variety of signal conditions.
Battery is only 24% larger, but screen is larger and CPU Is quad core (even if it is .32nm), I would be pleasantly surprised if stock vs stock it gets more than 4 hours of battery time in average usage.

With a different SoC, battery and AMOLED screen, I can believe the Note2 has 6 hours of screen on.
But with the Note1, it clearly can't get much over 4 hours of screen on time even in ideal conditions. Standby is great but the screen eats the battery.

I was so happy holding my Nexus10 in my hands.
But now, I'm pretty disappointed.
My fully charged N10 went down to 8% with Playing 2,5h Need for Speed Most Wanted + 2,5h other Display-on Time (mostly surfing, News App and Facebook Chatting)
I mean, FIVE hours? Come on Google, thats not even half the time I can reach with an Ipad

You iPad does 10 hours of gaming?
The ipad does have a 11560 mah battery and a screen that needs less back lighting. Also the cpu probably uses a good chunk of the battery on the nexus 10. could you go into the battery info and tell us what percent the display is using?

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ipad-3-benchmark-retina-display,3157-4.html <-- ipad 3 battery life isn't much better.
Sucks
Sorry, but I can run my S3 out in half that time playing a high end game.
Pushing those kind of pixels on a screen that size for 2.5 hours, plus another 2.5 hours of screen on is not bad going.
Further more, you can't possibly have had your N10 long enough yet to have properly charge cycled your battery 4 or 5 times, which builds its stamina.
I received mine at 11am yesterday, on factory charge (it was approx 60%), and playing with it most of the day yesterday, and for several hours last night (although admittedly no gaming) it only reached low battery (3%) when I woke up this morning.
The Display used 61%, need for speed used 21%
2.5h playing, full cpu, moving that amount of pixels, and 2.5h more, it's kinda good, man...
2,5 hours of gaming and 2,5 hours of web browsing? Thats useless for me..
I would say the A15 CPU ist more effiecient compared to previous tabs. Btw remember the high amount of pixel...so it is good
Sorry, misstyped.
It were only 1,5h of need for speed and 2,5h of surfing. So 4h in total!
The concern is that the N10 discharges while gaming even on the charger, why I didn't rush to buy one on first day. Best to always read true user reviews first before hitting the store.

It's don't really see that as an issue, I own plenty of devices that work like this, if anything its better for your battery, because first, it's slow charging, which is better for the battery, second, it's getting charged cycled even if it's always plugged in, which is good for its lifetime.

If they had used something other than a micro USB to charge it this would be fine. I saw a pogo charter in a thread but I'm sure it will cost $55++ which is stupid because it should have been standard with the device
4 hours of game/screen time is awful...I can easily get 8-9 out of my Asus infinity gaming/streaming/netflix while only taking 2-3 hours to fully charge. The slow I/o just kills that tablet for me though...

I had an iPad 3, and now have the Nexus 10. The battery life is a little better on the iPad, but not hugely so. That's with both devices at full brightness.
I can get 6-7 hours out of the Nexus and I was getting maybe 8 out of the iPad. Hardly a massive deal, especially considering this is a considerably lighter device with a bigger screen. Who has 6 hours a day to sit on their tablet anyway? I know if I did, I wouldn't have had to money to buy it in the first place!
As for charging: Yes, it's slow. It was also just as slow on my ipad. Am I missing something here? If you guys are seeing that as a deal-breaker, my advice is to stay well away from the iPad!

I think it's always a good idea to run the unit ONCE until it shuts off as soon as possible after getting it, just so you really know where zero is. It's not conditioning, just a way to help with calibration.
It's been my experience that new Android devices can run for many minutes after the battery meter was showing 0-1%. In one case it was over an hour (Tab 8.9).
Ok....I feel absolutely stupid and must be missing something but...how can I check the screen on time? It is just not listed under Battery as it is on the Xoom or the Galaxy Nexus for example
Click on the Display Entry in your Battery statstic!
Battery life usually improves after a few complete discharge/full recharge cycles.
What's the output on the bundled charger, 1A, 2A?
Anyhow, it's a trade-off. With the Nexus 10 you get the best screen and the most powerful tablet so I can live with the battery life. Plus, I'll be alternating between it and a Galaxy Note 10.1 as one charges.

I feel like that is pretty average battery cunsumption for people. There are some who simply cant optimize in any way and they get **** battery life, something like 5-6 hours total screen on time before the tablet dies. Then there are some of us (like me) who get anywhere between 11-15 hours of screen on time in a single charge with our usage style.

There are some who simply cant optimize in any way and they get **** battery life, something like 5-6 hours total screen on time before the tablet dies. Then there are some of us (like me) who get anywhere between 11-15 hours of screen on time in a single charge with our usage style.

11-15 HOURS? I haven't heard of that before anywhere on these forums. Can you post a screenshot?
I've been happy with my 6 hours of screen on time at mid-brightness on the stock ROM. I'd be willing to do quite a bit to get THAT level of battery.

Brightness level has the most to do with it, then it also depends if you leave wifi on all the time, and how intensive your apps are. You will never get 11 hours + with brightness at mid
And this one is from another user who posted it a few days ago:

Not even into "low battery" state yet too. He could ahve easily gotten 13+ hours of screen on time in that charge had he kept going.

Heavy use endurance

Playing Candy Crush for 22 hours straight can take its toll on your battery (and your marriage). Rate this thread to express how the LG G6's battery performs under heavy use. A higher rating indicates that it lasts a long time even when playing games, streaming video and audio, and doing other CPU-intensive activities.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Played a lot of games and apps at same time without closing them, and even dual windows some stuff. Phone seems unphased at all, other than a little heat which is to be expected due to so much running, but it ran like a PC. No lag, no hiccups, no problems. I also had the screen brightness set to 79% so that may also be a factor.
Day 1, 1st Full Charge, heavy usage especially from the morning till midday.
thanks for the pic
After 1st charge to 100%, day started at 7AM and was at 5% by 8PM. The day consisted of about 4 hours of video streaming, 2 hours of Pandora, and about 20-30 minutes checking facebook/instagram.
2nd day, 100% started at 6AM and it's currently at 60% at 1:35PM. About 45 minutes checking facebook/instagram, 1 hour streaming video and 1 hour reading manga.
Both days have location services and Wi-Fi on, Screen always on setting turned off, and auto brightness.
Colour me impressed!

Brightness is set to Auto which seems plenty good enough for all situations IMO.
Battery is at 5% time for a recharge. Final usage attached, 19hrs uptime with almost 6 hours SOT with no power saving of any kind.

Thats not bad at all. Do you leave it on wifi all day? Did you make any adjustments out of the box?

No adjustments at all Jeremiah. I did push the auto brightness up an extra 5%. Coming from a S6 this screen needed the extra brightness when I'm sunlight.
Wi-Fi is on all day and Bluetooth for most of the day as I have a Gear S2 Classic connected to the phone.
My S6 could get me 19hrs uptime but the SOT wpuld be like 2hrs maybe 2.5hrs
Light usage should easily get me 2 days on the G6.

Cool. I have Bluetooth on all day and I rarely use wifi, that tends to drain my battery a little more than it should.. I get about 18 hours up time but i haven't been able to get anymore than 4.50 SOT.

I soend a lot of time watching YT amd chattimg my whatsapp groups. Maybe its your mix of media that lends to you getting a little less SOT.
4.5hrs is still very good SOT compared against my old Sammy.

And the battery just seems to be getting better as the days pass [emoji41]

With heavy clash of clans use and other hard running apps I'm overall happy with the battery life. Though I did come from the LG G4.. So I could be just wowed by normal battery use.

How much more battery on G6 vs G4? I have G4 now and am on the fence between G6 and Galaxy S8. Battery life is a priority.

I noticed a improvement but honestly if your looking for battery life Samsung always wins! LG Still won't last a full day really

What do you do? I get 5 hours SOT time and 13 to 16 hours of battery..i guess that's not technically a full day.

One of Y'all just use the Mobile Site of Facebook and tell me the SOT results. Uninstall the App of course and try to use the Opera Browser if possible as it works the best

I do play clash of clan, and that eats a large amount of battery. Without the game I would agree with your numbers definitely!
