[Q] How can I get Chrome to sync properly on an Unrooted HDX 8.9 - Kindle Fire HDX 7" & 8.9" Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

I installed Chrome but wasn't able to log in to have it sync all of my bookmarks.
Back before we had root, I found and followed instructions by AndroidCowboy (found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2485004) to install portions of the Google framework which allowed Chrome to sign in and work properly. But I've been plagued by pop-ups where the Google Play Services and Google Service Framework stop working. It's just a matter of tapping the OK button to dismiss them, but they're getting annoying.
Now that the device has been out a little longer, does anyone know of a way to install just enough to make Chrome sync its bookmarks but not constantly have background processes die? I don't use GMail from my Kindle and am okay with not having the Play Store since I can just pull APKs off of my rooted phone. I'd prefer to not root my Kindle since right now I can get all of the additional functionality I want by running Nova.
Thank you for your time!

After following Android Cowboy's guide I was also getting multiple force closures. I have found that if I uninstall Google framework I don't get force closures anymore and all is well.

I uninstalled just the Framework piece and now Chrome isn't syncing right. If I delete a bookmark from my Kindle, it gets deleted from my PC, too. If I add a bookmark from my Kindle, it does add it on my PC's desktop view, but it adds it to the top of the folder instead of the bottom.
But, if I add a bookmark from my PC, my Kindle can't see it.
Not sure why it's only syncing one direction.

[Q] Multiple 3rd party issues.

I just bought my Nook Tablet form BBuy. It's firmware 1.4.0 I installed some 3rd party apps (Aldiko, kindle, amazon store which work fine. However, I have issues with ADW and Launcher Pro, and I can only get some apps to run. I know that is a a common issue, but I would like to delete the apps that do not work and launchers, but I cannot find out how. I have no need for two launchers, so I'd like to delete Launcher pro -because it wont even launch- but I cannot figure out how to do it. Also gmail -which I read all over this site works- does not work, and I would like to delete it as well. It still pops sup in my searches so I know it's installed somewhere. My other issue is launching ADW. The only way I can get it to launch is when I power off the device and it auto launches into it on power up. If I search for any combination of ADW it does not come up in my lists. So if I exit ADW I have no way to get back into it. Any help would be great. I'm just about to throw this thing out a window and just get a Fire instead.
Okay so i'm a noob at the nook tablet myself but i'll try to give you some ideas..
The apps that don't run.. you don't say.. but i can tell you that honeycomb apps probably won't work so you'd need to make sure they are not for that version of android
This thread gives you great apps that work on the nook tablet
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1353040
you should definitely consider loading app Manager to have side loaded apps appear on the nook home screen.. and Button Saviour so you can get to the alternate home screen (launcher pro, go launcher whatever you use..)
There is great info in this forum. and honestly it took me a day of reading but now my nook rocks...
I've been using my nook for almost a week and i can tell you it's a great little tablet for the price.. i bought it after selling my ipad2 and wanted something to use whilst waiting for the ipad3.. i can tell you now.. i'll be keep this nook tablet as it is a great size for reading and covers all my surfing and movie watching needs.. the kindle fire is good but having also owned that for a couple of days before returning.. i can tell you the limited storage space and inferior screen put me off...
Lol. I had read thatbthread at least 4 times and never saw how to delete apps until now. Installed google framework and now my youtube app doesnt work, and gmail still doesnt work.
You need to install NTHiddensettings.apk in order to delete apps from the Nook.
As I mentiined, I figured out how to delete, but does anyone know where the apk.s download to so i can remove, after installing them?
Seriously? No one knows where the apks download to? Also, how in gods name do you get gmail to work side-loaded. All my other questions have been answered per linked thread.
/data/app
And did you root and install gapps? Without that, I don't think you're going to be able to use gmail.

No not rooted. People are claiming successful installation of gmail, google+, and other google services specific apps, but I get the "Unable to establish stable connection" every time I try to side load them.

Are you saying others have side loaded these apps without rooting? I don't think they work without the Google services framework, which you have to root to install.

Has anyone been able to update to google play? I keep getting error 101 and 491.

Have you tried applications management, force stop market, clear data, do same with Google framework. Reboot, run market. If not search for Google Play. Apk. Download, intall and repeat above

DAE have most apps report they are incompatible with their gtab? Its liike the ics beta doesn't have the so called market fix?!?!
No problems here. Google Play updated just fine, and most apps I am looking for show up with the default settings.
With the ICS Beta 1.0, you can go into ROM Control and change the footprint to be seen as different tablets, such as the Xoom and Transformer.
Make sure to Force Stop the Market (Play Store) app and clear data (also check to see if Market Updater needs to be force closed). You may also have to force stop Google Framework and clear its data as well.
If you change footprints, you have to clear market data so it will load the new footprint.
Try upgrading to the latest gapps package TeamDRH released. It has google play built in.
This worked thanks!

Select the widgets tab from your app drawer then drag and drop.
Loving this ROM, it installed with no issues. Multitouch gestures are not working at all for me (which would be fine if I didn't have apps that seem to require it).
Has anyone found a successful way to get rid of the status bar at the bottom?
I have looked at other threads, it seems some ROMs have this built in. The auto-hide option in settings didn't work, and I tried the Gesture Control app with no luck either (maybe because multitouch isn't working for me).

[Q] Google Play Store and other apps

Has anyone gotten google play store working? I tried following the steps from android cowboy but I get back to back errors for google services no matter what.
On a different note, is there a way to remove the ads/special offers for free?
Thanks,

Google play is a system apps so it's gonna need a rooted or modified rom with bootloader cracked. Same is needed to disable kindle offers.
So is there any good way of getting apps beyond side loading?

Try this link.
Although it says Kindle Fire HD, ignore that. Ignore step 3. Also ignore anything that says about copying to /system/app.
Just install the apps in the order he has listed then install the "Vending.apk" (That is the Google Play Store). Please also note that you will most likely not be able to install apps from it. :/

Seems to me like there should be some kind of app you can run on your rooted android device to pull the apk. Then install the full version on the Kindle via sideloading.

Better results
You'll get better results in the interim from installing:
a) 1MobileMarket
or
b) Aptoide
or
c) BlackMart Alpha (shh..)
Tinkering with Google Play Store components before we have root may be an exercise in futility.
The content of the link is quiet useful to me. Thank you for sharing. I decide to buy a licence. :good:

The SnapPea app that I just tested is a way to control your android device from a browser on your computer, similar to AirDroid. It does not allow access to Google Play for the Kindle. What it does do is help you to install an .apk file through the browser, but then we can do that already by allowing sideload anyway. So maybe you were thinking about something else?

Same here.. Just bought a Kindle Fire HD 2013 and tried every possible attempt described on many how-to to get it rooted for Google Play. Nothing worked. Device current version is 11.3.0.5.
Tried the side load as well described for HDX. Gmail app works but that's about it.
Anyone succeeded on this version?
Thanks

I basically got pretty much every app to work except for Hangouts and Play Store. This includes everything from Voice to Gmail to Map to Google Earth to Google Plus to whatever. The key for me was to start with base configs that Android Cowboy posted, but then add bunch of dependencies from android 4.2.2 and update with latest version of backed up apps. For example, I have had to install Google Play Services 3.2.66 first and then was able to update to 4.0.31 after reboot. That version was required for Youtube to work properly (i.e. allow account sign-in). Things still crash sometimes, but it's not a huge deal.
Main thing is Youtube, Music, Gmail and Calendar are all working more or less ok. Chrome signed into my google account, but its not pulling down settings (bookmarks, open tabs from other computers, etc...). Google Plus crashes sometimes but works. Hangouts is clearly missing a dependency of some sort. I installed most things I could thing of from default Android 4.2.2 CM10.1 apps package and from backing up my phone (galaxy s4), but it's still no go. It would be nice to get that going as well. Oh well, Skype can cover most things there.

Wanted to confirm that I also have Google Voice working on the HDX 7 (since I rarely see people mentioning it as a Google App). Interestingly, I also got Talkatone working on the HDX with my Google Voice number, even though the app's FAQ plainly says that Google Voice will NOT work with it. As a result, as long as I have wifi, I can now easily use my Google Voice number to make and receive calls.

I'm using the paid version of floating toucher to access recent apps.
To get apps to show up on the stock multi tasking bar you have to open them from the stock home launcher.

Correct. The multitasking feature on the HDX is basically just the Carousel, with exactly the same shortcuts in exactly the same order. The only difference is it's hidden on the edge of the screen until you pull it up. So, just as apps launched from alternative launchers won't show up on the Carousel, they also won't show up on the HDX multitasking bar.

[Q] Few questions from someone new to the Kindle..

Hello,
I just ordered the Fire HD 6 and am super stoked to get it. I had a few questions if someone familiar with it could help, I'd greatly appreciate it.
1. Can I install a different launcher on the new OS or did they lock it down so you can't do that anymore? I'd love to put Nova on it just to make it feel more comfortable for me.
2. Can I install google music and allow it to stream from the cloud on the device? I've read some tutorials online, but they all seem to be older so I don't know if the new updated OS has blocked some of these.
3. Is it tough to side load apps as far as apps causing issues when doing so? I'd mainly be looking to side load Google Play Music, Chrome, and possibly a few other small apps.
Any help would greatly be appreciated. I've searched all over the web for a site that has a forum for this particular tablet, and this seems to be the only valid one I could find.
Thank you
I can answer a few. When installing a launcher, it allows you to but when choosing set as default it never really gets set as default. It just keeps showing the choose launcher pop-up each time you press home.
Google Music works but you cannot log into your google account with it and streaming does not seem to work.
Sideloading apps is just as easy as any Android but many apps that use Google services will crash. Surprisingly Chrome does work on the hd6! At least Chrome beta. Did not try regular Chrome.

Thank you for your help, exactly what I was wanting to know.
I sideloaded Tasker and was able to set Themer to open up on unlock. It helps with not being able to set it as default.
Themer also lets you set wallpapers and custom icons. It's kinda buggy, but it gets the job done. Have Power Toggles in the Notifications to make up with not having the menu.

Has anyone been able to get any other Android Lollipop apk files working? I cannot get gmail, google music, calendar, fitness, etc. to work on a rooted G3.
gmail, music, and others get the error message "application not installed because an app with the same name with a conflicting signature is already installed"
calendar just won't install at all, giving the error "not installed"
fitness installs but upon opening requires an update through the play store, but the play store is unable to find the app
I am running the latest version of google play services (6.1.83), on jasmine ROM with xposed installed and the "show all apps in play store" 240 dpi mod enabled as well as the G3 tweaksbox.
I could try going into the system/app folder and removing the gmail and music apks so I can update them, but I haven't tried it yet. mostly I'm concerned about the fitness app.
EDIT: I also tried the keyboard, and that installed okay, but any time I wanted to type any text the cursor would show up but no keyboard would show.
Thanks!

You could try removing the stock ones with TiBu then wiping cache and dalvic then try to install again.
If you back them up first using TiBu you'll be fine in case that doesn't pan out.

I tried this. Google music and lollipop keyboard are working. Fitness.apk gives the same error as before, Gmail quits on boot (repeatedly) and if renamed to Gmail2.apk, downloads an "update" from the play store that reverts it back to the 4.4 version (previously the farthest I could get was "welcome to the new gmail" and you can watch a video about the changes, but once you say "Ok, got it", it force closes. Clearing the gmail data prevents the force closing at boot, but will not allow the app to get past the "ok, got it" screen.

Do u happen to have the newest version of play store installed? Just checking.
Sent from my VS985 4G using Tapatalk
I think so - I am using play store 5.0.32, play services 6.1.83. both install just fine on 4.4.2. I also tried everything with the previous 4.9.X versions of both, but that wasn't very productive.
I tried removing the gmail apk and all instances of com.google.android.gm, which I could find in /system/app, /data/app, and /data/data, then installing the gmail 5.0 apk or placing it in /system/app and setting permissions to rw-r--r--. Both of these result in a "disabled" gmail, which can be "enabled" in the play store. Enabling results in multiple force closes and the app cannot be opened. I wiped the app data and tried again to no avail. I then resorted to deleting gmail 5.0 through TiBu, and then tried installing directly from the play store. This results in a "version not supported" error during download, and the installation can not be accomplished. At this point I tried reverting to gmail 4.9, but it can't be installed, giving the "application not installed" error after going through the installation process.
Fitness.apk still opens and requires an update through the play store which cannot be found.
I wiped everything and reinstalled JasmineROM this morning to get a working gmail. I will update gms and play store to 5.0 versions soon.
The keyboard Force closes in landscape.

Yea the messenger seems to not be working for those on Stock ROMs, maybe someone has figured out how to use on stock if it's possible but I'm not sure myself, as I've said before I'm not on stock so it's working fine for me.
Hopefully once bump comes out and AOSP ROMs are available for the masses, messenger can then be enjoyed by more people.
