[Q] CM 11 EXPERIMENTAL NiGHTLY - Error status 7 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

------------- SOLVED! --------------
Hello all,
First of all I want to say I'm pretty new to flashing ROMs etc.
Currently I'm at stock 4.3 Jellybean and I want to flash my SGS3 to the new CM 11 ROM.
I rooted my phone following this tutorial: vvvvvv.telefoonrooten.nl/samsung/samsung-galaxy-s3-root/ (sorry if its in Dutch, but it uses the CF-Root-SGS3-v6.3 and Odin).
After I rooted I copied both the CM11 ROM and GAPPS to my external SD, I went to recovery and tried to install the new custom ROM but I got an error (status 7) and it was aborted.
Also if I try to reboot it won't boot normally as it should be but it goes back to recovery mode automatically...
I fixed to get back to Jellybean by flashing the stock rom (unrooting?) it via Odin.
Anyone else got the exact same problem as I do and knows a solution to be able to flash CM 11?
Thanks in advance,
Steelbear

please read the thirst post in a rom/kernel/whatever thread. and maybe if you havent done it already you should also read the stickies in general section.
FAQ (Read before post !!)
- If you obtain Error 7 when you tried to install ROM in CWM or TWRP
Install the latest version of CMW or TWRP

BTW latest philz touch recovery works too

Since you went back to stock and you already know how to root, I suggest you go to Play Store and download ROM Manager to help you install latest CWM recovery on your device.
Or you can simply go to CWM website, pick the version of the recovery for your phone and flash it via Odin.
Hope it helps.

Indeed it worked! I found it out myself yesterday. Went to the CWM site and downloaded the latest version (6.0.4.4.) and flashed it through Odin. But thanks for your input anyways (to all who replied) !

An alternative solution that I often use is to open the Updater Script in META-INF folder in the ROM's zip and delete first lines, where it gets device model as property.
Obviously it's an UNSAFE operation (because that lines avoid to install ROMs of other phone on mine) but when I'm sure that ROM I've downloaded is for my phone I do it and it works

[Q] S2G Flashing Custom ROM Not Possible!

Hey guys
I'm trying to flash my S II I9100G with cMIUI, which doesn't work. The phone gets stuck during booting right after the installation. I've been messing around with this problem for a couple of hours by now, been googling a lot and yet I have not found a solution.
What I did in order to flash the ROM:
1) I installed the latest German stock ROM (ICS) using Odin.
2) I followed this tutorial (root using SU-BB-Installer.zip and flash CWM recovery kernel 6.0.1.2 via kTool): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2065581 So far everything works fine. I have root access now.
3) Downloaded the cMIUI 2.10.19 zip from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1804619
4) When I tried to flash cMIUI from Recovery and toogle signature verification "on", it told me "signature verification failed". I ignored that message and installed it anyway.
5) Installation ran smoothly. After finishing it, the phone wanted to reboot. It now got stuck in the booting screen. I can not get the ROM booted.
I don't think it's cMIUI-caused, because I tried to flash a clean CM10 and still had the same problem (even though it didn't fail signature verification). Here are some more things I tried:
- installed clean stock ROM via Odin, again. Then followed all above steps exactly as described above, except for using Odin for flashing CWM Recovery instead of kTool
- again, clean stock ROM. After rooting, I then tried to install cMIUI via ROM Manager v5.5.2.3. Unfortunately, ROM Manager doesn't identify CWM recovery and keeps asking me to install the Recovery-System with ROM Manager. When I try that, there apparently "is no official CWM Recovery available" for my model. So, ROM Manager is no option
As described in the following thread, I can not use the ClockworkMod Recovery 6.0.1.2 kernel on aosp based ROMs like cMIUI and CM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1631934 So that probably is the cause of my problem. Can you tell me what kernel I can use, instead? Or is there another way to flash that ROM? Via Odin, for example...
Thanks for your help in advance. Very much appreciated!!
Regards,
Daniel
What Codeworkx is saying in that thread is, that you cannot use that kernel when you are already on a aosp based rom. So you can use that recovery.
Something you didn't mention, did you do a full wipe from within the recovery? If you didn't do that, then thats probably the source of your problems.
1. Flash a stock rom true Odin.
2. Flash the recovery (you don't need to root your rom after)
3. Wipe system/factory reset
4. Wipe cache.
5. Download the rom again to make sure you the download went well.
6. Toggle signature verification off.
7. Flash Miui
8. Reboot and wait.

Thank you so much! Wiping helped. :good: Why didn't I try that before :silly:
Awesome, now I can finally enjoy cMIUI. It's really great! (except for crashing galery/camera app when starting cam from lock screen. but who cares )
Thanks dude! :highfive:

FAQ:
Q: Why do I get error code 7 when trying to flash ?
A: Because you are using old recovery. Update to the latest TWRP.

latest CWM or philz are working as well.
try to flash one of them (the latest) and reflash the rom.
sorry if this sounds a bit angry, but it's already the second time today that I answer such a question. In future please search first before asking a question
i already got the lastest cwm 6.0.3.2
can you leave me a official firmware 4.3 international please?
i can't find a twrp to flash .need help
any help ? still don't know what to do
For S3 International latest CWM is 6.0.4.3. You can easily install it through Play Store using Rom Manager(but it requires root)
Or you can go to CWM webpage , download the recovery for your model and flash it via Odin.
managed by me ,i installed cm for 4.3 and it runs perfectly ,now i have to download twrm and trying to install omni rom but later

[Q] Help: After Upgrade from Cyanogen 10.2 to 11 constantly booting into TWRP

Hi i kind of bricked my Mediapad 7 when tring to update Cyangen 10.2 to Cyangen 11. Need some help how to proceed.
First i booted into TWRP and tried to install the file
S7-301u V100R002C232B005 ICS Android 4.0.3 General Version.zip
to go back from Cyano 10.2 to stock rom 4.0.3. But this failed.
So i directly installed
cm-11-20140118-UNOFFICIAL-hws7300u.zip
Installation went OK. No, i didn't do a backup of the installed 10.2.
After reboot, the device is not booting but always going back to TWRP. What can i do?
What i tried in TWRP so far:
Reinstalling cm-11-20140118-UNOFFICIAL-hws7300u.zip
Reinstalling cm-10.1-20130526-UNOFFICIAL-hws7300u.zip
Wipe Cache
Factory Reset
Nothing helps. Always booting into TWRP v2.3.2.3 :crying:
Thanx for any help how to resolve this!
Forgot: During install of firmware there is a log-line:
E. Unknown File System: 'datamedia'
no slash between data and media
Solved
Solved it.
- Went back to stock recovery with "Auto_recovery_installer_for_huawei_mediapad"
- installed 4.0.3
- then installes cyanogen 11 with twrp

I had the problem of not being able to reinstall a stock rom as well.
How EXACTLY did you do it for the stock one?
I've also found out from a CM developer that stock roms can't be installed with the custom recoveries like TWRP or CWM.
Which is a nice thing to know since there doesn't seem to be any info on the forums about that.

[Q] Need help I777 starting from 4.0.3 moving to 4.4.4 (SOLVED STEPS IN POST)

I had little issue moving up to 4.0.4 so I don't have to worry about the EMMC erase bug, but I'm realizing I have no way to get up further.
Everything seems to require CWM or a version of TWRP that has no compatible kernels with 4.0.4 best I can do is Siydah and like 6.0.1.2 and looks like CWM but its rather sparse on the details.
Final edit, I found a much better solution.
It does not seem as though you can flash a upgraded kernel from the CWM interface itself and reboot reliably failed on multiple kernels.
Solution
Download mobile Odin
Download the 4.4 ROM of your choice (compatable)
Gapps too stick them all somewhere you can find them (i just leave em in downloads)
Download and flash CWM 6.0.4.4 for Kitkat i777.. no clue where I found it wasn't on XDA though.
Turn the phone off (if you reboot and don't reboot too recovery you get a loop)
Boot to recovery (if you get in a loop here pull the battery THEN boot to recovery)
Now you'll notice your not on your old version of CWM anymore.
Install your ROM and Gapps.
Boot to rom
Boot back to recovery Now your once again on a different version of CWM.
I strongly advise cleaning everything up and installing it again I had some issue until I did.
GL to anyone who finds this thread. If there seems to be a need I could rewrite it with a better title.

Always remember that when you flash a ROM, that you typically get the Recovery that is tied to the Kernel contained in that ROM. So, you flashed the Kernel, got Recovery A, then you flashed the ROM and got Recovery B. A KK Kernel can be flashed independent of a KK ROM, and will add different/additional/improved functionality, depending on the dev, but it also contains it's own Recovery in most cases.

Nah, you just can't install the latest ROM with an older recovery.
So if you want to go up you have to do the little dance I described above. (Yes I know certain walkthroughs indicate you can do the first step in recovery, I simply found that to not be true and gained me only bootloops and the joys of reflashing stock then reinstalling a updated-er version so I could try again.)
wil this work in my situation
Quick question.. am on:
android 4.1.2
Shostock v 3.0.2
my cwm v6.0.2.7.
I want to move for a slimmer kitkat rom..

I'm on Android 4.1.2 rooted and with Philz CWM Touch recovery.. Now?

Hello everybody, as the title says, I currently have this configuration. My father's phone always reports memory is full and I decided to upgrade the phone to a different ROM, possibly one which is light. Anyway I found different threads about IsoRec recovery but I didn't understood what are we talking about. Also, I was not able to understand what to do and which files to flash, even if, just for an example, I wish to flash latest CM13. I think that an old recovery which supports Android 4.1.2 doesn't support Android 6.0 to be flashed via zip, so I would probably mess up something. So, what should I do? Flash something with ODIN via PC? Or there's something I can do directly from the phone to update recovery and then flash the ROM's zip? Thank you!
Hi,
You can follow the instructions here to install CM12.1 first:
Download cm-12.1-XXXXXXXX-UNOFFICIAL-i9100.zip to your sdcard
Make sure you're using a Kitkat Compatible Recovery
Boot into Recovery
Wipe all your data
Flash cm-12-.1XXXXXXXX-UNOFFICIAL-i9100.zip from sdcard
(Optional)Flash Google Apps.zip from sdcard
Reboot

Click to collapse
Once installed, follow this guide to upgrade to CM13:
